What kind of media institution might

distribute your media product?

Evaluation Question 3

Page 2: Evaluation Question 3

What is a Media institution?A media institution is an established, often-profit based organization, that deal in the creation and distribution of advertising, entertainment and information services. The media industry I would mainly be looking at would be the film institution.

A institution would usually distribute a film product in various cinema’s nationally and also globally. This is where they would make their box office money from. Once the time of a film in cinema’s is over ad the film gets pulled off, DVD ad Blu-Ray CD releases would be made and various other merchandise products would be invested in and then sold. They would also usually market the product so that they are able to gather a audience.

Also a institution is able to invest money into the production and post-production process if the producers/director/screenwriter would pitch their idea to them. If they would like it they can accept and also co-produce it.

What would an institution do to a film product?

Page 3: Evaluation Question 3

LoveLife Productions• LoveLife Productions is our own production house which has produced

‘Unrequited Love’.• The LoveLife Productions institution was created to release and produce

films which are not very extreme and are created with a light-hearted feel to it. The films they would release would make their audience want to embrace their Life and enjoy it. We would give them hopes and goals to achieve not only in the aspect of true love but I many other like friendship.

• This production house would be the one where we would pitch our film idea to and get the budget to produce ‘Unrequited Love’

Working Title Films• Working Title (WT), is a British production company which is based in

London however has been bought by Universal (one of the big six film institutions).

• WT has produced successful Romantic Comedy films such as: ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’ (1994); ‘Notting Hill’ (1999); ‘Love Actually’ (2003); and ‘Theory of Everything’ (2014), their latest blockbuster.

• We would want to have WT co-produce our film so that it has a well known institution publicity which would cause more people to go and watch the film. Also we would have a more wider budget to work with.

• As well as co-produce the film we would want WT to distribute the film in the cinema’s nationally.

Universal Studios•Universal Studios which is also known as Universal Pictures is one of the Hollywood’s Big Six film studios.•As Universal is the parent company of Working Title, so we would want Universal to release Unrequited Love Internationally once it is a success nationally. •If it is released internationally, it would allow us to reach to a wider audience and also make more box office money. As we have followed the generic conventions from even Hollywood films, our film is a Trans-Atlantic film.

Page 6: Evaluation Question 3

Universal Music Group• Universal Music Group is the largest music corporation in the world.• As the soundtrack is a very key point in a film and especially in Romantic

films, we would need to get in contact with a good record label. • As the UMG is the largest in the world who have bought many record

labels in various different countries including the UK, we would be able to get in contact with a well known one.

• We would have to invest quite some budget into the soundtrack however if it would be successful on the charts then a wider range of people would get to know about the film.

iTunes

• iTunes is a media player and a media library where albums/soundtracks can be bought from and downloaded.

• iTunes would be the ideal institution from where we could sell our soundtracks and make more profit.

Page 8: Evaluation Question 3

Netflix/LoveFilm• As the world is now improving technology wise, many people have started to

either rent out films online or pay a monthly subscription to website where they can watch movies online on their Laptops; Mobiles; Tablets; etc.

• Once Unrequited Love would be taken off from cinema’s and also the DVD sales would die down, then LoveLife Productions would get in contact with Netflix and LoveFilm and get Unrequited Love up on their sites.

• On these film sites, there usually come up a recommended section when a viewer has seen a film similar to ours, therefore more people can find out about this film.

Page 9: Evaluation Question 3

YouTube• YouTube is a video sharing site, where not only individuals but also companies

upload videos like music videos, TV clips, vlogs, etc.• YouTube will be the distributer for the trailers of Unrequited Love and fans or

people interested in the film would also be able to view clips of the film on there. As YouTube can be considered as another social site, people can actually leave back comments and feedbacks or like/dislikes on the video clips. Through this we as an institution are able to connect with our audience.

• Further on, when the film would be featured on sites like Netflix and LoveFilm, the film would also be released on YouTube, however if one would want to watch it they would need to pay. This is useful to people who are not signed up with Netflix or LoveFilm.

Page 10: Evaluation Question 3

Vevo• Vevo is the number one music platform on the web which has been set up by Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Musical Group and Abu Dhabi Music. It is mainly viewed on YouTube.• As it is linked with Universal, Unrequited Love's soundtrack can be uploaded through their channel which would give the film another advertising revenue.• Further on if the music tracks from the soundtrack would be made into music video's and released through Vevo it would give the film hype globally.

Page 11: Evaluation Question 3

Sky Movies• Sky Movies which is run by Sky, is a television channel to which

people would have to purchase subscriptions for. It operates through UK and Ireland mainly however also in other European countries.

• Sky Movies is not a such well used/subscribed channel however if we're to have to have a TV premier, where the film would be played n television then Sky would be the distributer.
