DESCRIPTION

Setting/Location One of our locations, a public park in the daytime, is a typical location for thriller films, as although it is a normal looking place, in the safety of the daylight with lots of other people walking about, extraordinary events are happening, in the form of the protagonists inner struggle. The other location we shot in is a woodland area, also in daylight. This location Is also typical as it has a sense of isolation about it, whilst also appearing as a relatively normal location, with extraordinary events going on.

The Title of the filmThe title of our film, ‘The Long Game’, is typical of the Thriller genre, as it suggests elements of the plot and links to the background of the films protagonist, but doesn’t give much of the plot away therefore keeping the element of mystery intact. The name links in to the characters backstory and some main themes of the film as, ‘The Long Game’ refers to a card game, and cards and gambling are a big part of the characters problems and troubled past. The font we used for our title is called Blacklisted, it works well in our sequence as it fits the theme of playing cards which are a prop seen frequently in the film. It is also typical of thriller films as it is an mysterious unsettling looking font which fits in with the theme of the entire sequence.

Costumes and PropsThe costumes used for our protagonist, are casual clothing, consisting mainly of dark colours, to suggests the characters troubled personality. The fact that it is casual also suggests that he appears at first, as a normal person, but that there is more to him than that. The important props we used in our sequence were fake blood, for the flashback scenes, which is a typically used prop in thriller films. We also used a pack of cards, as these were a very important prop which link to the story of our whole film, including the title, ‘The Long Game’.

Camerawork and Editing& EditingIn terms of camerawork we used techniques such as low angle shots and POV shots, to immerse the audience in the sequence. Shots like this are typical of thriller films, as they create tension for the audience. In terms of editing and effects we grade our shots by de saturating them and giving them a blue tint. This creates an unsettling mood and is commonly used in thriller films for the desirable effect it has on the whole film.

Story & how the OTS sets it upThe story of our OTS is very typical of thrillers. It is about a mysterious character trying to cope with problems faced in his past and events going on in the present. The audience is not given to much information about what is happening to him until the end of the sequence where a murder victim is shown with our character standing over them. The fact that very little information, only subtle hints, are given in our opening sequence is typical of thriller films and the opening sequences of thriller films.

How characters are introducedThe characters in our sequence are shown straight away when the film starts, but no information is given about them apart from appearance and subtle hints about the main characters backstory. This is typical of thrillers as not giving away too much information about the characters keeps the audience interested and guessing about the narrative, like they should when watching a thriller film.
