IN WHAT WAYS DOES
YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT
USE, DEVELOP, OR
CHALLENGE FORMS
AND CONVENTIONS OF
REAL MEDIA
PRODUCTS?
By Hoorie begum
The conventions that I have followed with my
music magazine is that I have put the
masthead, pictures, and cover lines in the place
that it normally is, I have set out my magazine in
the normal way that a magazine is set out.
Before creating my magazine I did research to
see what the audience would like to see on the
front cover, contents page and double page
spread of my music magazine, and using that
information I made my magazine look
professional.
Here Is an example of an
existing music magazine front
cover that I have already
analysed.
Here I have compared my music
magazine to an existing magazine to
see if the conventions follow.
Masthead – The masthead
is in big bold writing which
makes it stand out from the
rest of the magazine, it is in
a teal colour which isn't a
typical convention as they
are normally black or red.
However it is still very bold,
so therefore it catches the
audiences attention straight
away.
Main Cover Line – The
main cover line is the
artists name, and by doing
this we automatically know
who it is that is on the front
page of the magazine. Colour Scheme – There is a
colour scheme going throughput
the magazine, it is teal, black and
dark pink/purple. By doing this I
have made my magazine look very
professional as it isn't just loads of
different colours on the magazine. Background – The background
colour is teal blended in with white,
and I have chosen to have it teal
and white because it is different, it
matches with the masthead colour
that I have chosen. It looks simple,
but still very appealing.
Main Image – The main image is of
the artists, and he is dominating the
majority of the page, he is taking up
two thirds of the page, and that
looks good because it is supposed
to be dominating the page. He is
dressed in a gilet jacket and that
matches the conventions of my
magazine which is hip hop as that
is how they dress. The image is a
medium close up shot which is
typical in a music magazine. The Sell/Cover Lines – The cover
lines are of other artists and what
will be inside of the magazine. By
having the other artists name s on
the front cover it attracts the
audiences attention, into wanting to
buy the magazine
It has the issue number, and the date it has been released, and that it
a convention as that is on every magazine. It also has the price of the
issue and a barcode, and that is normal as well as every magazine
has to have the price on the front.
Use Of Pull Quote – The
pull quote is based on a
quote what the artists has
said and that is what would
lure the audience into buying
the magazine because they
would be intrigued to see
what else the artists is going
to say.
Here Is an example of an
existing contents page that
I have already analysed.
Here I have compared my
contents page of my music
magazine to see if it follows the
conventions.
Masthead – The masthead is
the word contents, and I have
but it in the same colour as the
front page of the masthead on
the front cover, and this was
done because I wanted it to
match, and make it look
professional.
Colour Scheme – The
colour scheme is teal, and
black, and this runs
throughout the whole of the
contents page, and by doing
this it makes the page look a
lot more sophisticated and
professional.
The page may be quite
plain, but the colours is what
makes the page stand out,
the colours are quite bright,
and that makes it eye
catching.
There is the magazine name at the bottom
of the page, and that is a typical
convention as, a lot of magazines have
the name of the magazine at the bottom of
each page.
Editors Letter - I have also
got an editors letter just to
say what I want you to get
from the magazine. This is
a normal convention as
many magazines have an
editors letter to introduce
the magazine.
Style – The style
throughout the magazine
is consistent as the
contents has
subheadings that all look
the same.
Main Image – I don't have one
main image however I have two
images on the page, and you
cant properly see the faces of
the artists, and this creates the
illusion of mystery. The two
images are much smaller than
the image on the front page as
on the contents page they
aren't as dominating,
Contents – The contents has
got subheadings, to say what
things are going to be in each
section. There are page
numbers to say what things
are going to be on each page,
and you can just skip to
something straight away if you
want to see that first.
Here Is an example of an existing
music magazine double page
spread that I have already
analysed.
Here I have compared my double
page spread of my music
magazine to see if it follows the
conventions.
Main Image – The main image is of the artist, and she is
dominating the majority so one half of the page. The things that
we connote from the image is that she is innocent, and by
seeing this we want to see what kind of an artists she will be.
Subheading – The subheading is a little title just introducing
the artists, and is a typical convention, as many different
magazines introduce the artists like this.
Background – The background is a light pink, and I chose to do
this because the artists looks very feminine, and by having it
pink it connotes that she is girly.
Main Headline – The main headline is
the artists name, and that is all that is
needed because by having that you are
straightaway letting yet audience know
who the artist is and what their name is
. It has a girly font, and is light pink
which is what makes it stand out from
the background.
It has the name of the magazine, in the
left hand corner, which is another
convention that I have followed as
many magazines have the name of the
magazine on each page.
Colour Scheme – The colour scheme
with the double page spread is pink, the
background is a light pink, and the title
matches that because it is also pink,
but it is a slightly darker shade of pink
which make sit stand out front he
background. By doing this is catches
the readers attention, and makes it
intriguing which make them want to
carry on reading.,
There are two more images of the
artists however they are much smaller
than the main image, as they aren't
dominating as much.
CHALLENGES OF CONVENTIONS OF REAL
MEDIA PRODUCTS
The things that I did differently, and the conventions that I
didn't follow were that I used teal as the colour of the
masthead , normally the colour of the masthead is either red
or black and no magazines that I have seen have used the
colour teal.
Also the background colour that I have chosen is very
different as well because many magazines have the
background a bold colour such as black or white.
