Mise En Scene- Actors

The first actors that we are introduced to is Taylor 1 and Lucas. They are apart but we can see the friendly relationship they have through the shots used. In the next scene we seem them together and they seem happy when we are introduced to Taylor 2. Taylor 2 is her dressed up with a brunet wig on and different makeup. She plays both the Taylor characters. This has probably been done for her young audience because she didn’t want them to make the focus on not liking one character. However these are the three main actors we see in the music video but there is an appearance shortly of a guy on the football team who is talking to Taylor 2. This results in an argument between Taylor 2 and Lucas which could be considered a break up. Towards the end of the music video we see Taylor 1 and Lucas together.

Mise En Scene- Location

One- The first location we see is an establishing shot of both main characters homes. The

homes are symbolic of their friendship and being so close

Two- The next location we see is just outside there where they speak on a bench before Lucas’ girlfriend

pick him up and leave Taylor 1 alone

Three- The next location is at a high school football pitch where we see the official break up

Taylor 2 and Lucas

Four- The last location is probably at the high school where the characters are having their prom. This is the

moment where we see Taylor 1 feeling as if she is finally accepted and is where the story has a happy ending

Mise En Scene- Makeup

Taylor 2 wears quite heavy makeup around her eyes compared to Taylor 1. This makes her seem a bit more villainess because it has connotations of being quite dark. During the prom scene she has a lot more makeup on than Taylor 1 which makes it seem as if she is not a natural beauty and it makes her seem slightly fake because of the stereotype with wearing a lot of makeup.

Taylor 1 seems to not be wearing any makeup during the beginning of the video. This is so that she is seen as a natural beauty and so that she keeps to the character of being plain and Lucas’ friend. However we see a transformation in the final scene, she is wearing a lot more makeup and she is without her glasses. With this transformation we feel like we are looking at her like Lucas is for the first time he has noticed her as something more than a friend.

Mise En Scene- Colour There are three main scenes were we can see a clear view of the colour

In this scene when we see Taylor 1 and Lucas close together for the first time, there is a slight orange

tint throughout this scene. This has been done to maybe enhance the

thought of them being happy if they where together.

In both the football game scene and the scene at prom they both have a blue color about them. This could have been done to

differentiate the scenes of Taylor 1 and Lucas together to the scenes at school. For the football scene this cold colour works well because of the break up that happens. In the prom scene the blue works well

to makeup Taylor 1 stand out in her white dress and it makes her different from everyone else. Almost highlighting to Lucas that she is

the one even more so.

Mise En Scene- Props

The main prop used in this music video that is the basis of the narrative is the notes. These notes explain the feeling of

the characters to the viewer and is an effective and an original way of presenting narrative within a music video.

These notes help keep the audience interested because they want to know what happens next. It also ties in with the fact that it feels like a story so you are making the viewer read in

order to understand the emotions of the characters.

The books that we see Taylor 1 holding is a way of showing her shy personality. The connotations of

someone who reads or studies a lot in high school can have a stigma of a nerd/geek stereotype. This has been done to make her look like an outcast, invisible and it

makes her a polar opposite from Taylor 2. Having a character like these opposing two mean that their

audience may be able to relate or put themselves in Taylor 1’s position and feel like they understand her. We also see Taylor 1 messing around by singing into her hairbrush. This also shows some of her character

and her young audience would be able to relate to doing something like this.

Mise En Scene- Lighting

The lighting in this opening

scene is clearly used on each of Lucas and

Taylor 1’s bedrooms in

order to highlight their conversation

Because its night time outside in this scene they where able to reflect the light from inside on the window in order to see Taylor 1’s face. This is an effective use of lighting because we can’t see her very clearly. It looks as if she feels that she has disappeared

and he cant see what was right in front of him.

The lighting in this scene is natural and it reflects the natural chemistry

that is trying to be portrayed when Lucas

and Taylor 1 are together

Here the lighting is quite harsh but it is done so that you can see the

characters reactions on their faces even though it is dark and at night. It also highlights Taylor 1

when she walks in.

Mise En Scene- Costume

In the first scene we can see that both these characters have a similar costumes. This is reinforcing the friendship connection we see between them

During this scene we see Taylor 1 dressing up in multiple outfits that represent different social groups. This has not only been done to entertain the young audience but it has been done to show that she can try to be different people but Lucas doesn’t see her more than a friend no matter what she does. It can also explain to a young audience that feeling of trying to find yourself in the years at high school, meaning they can relate to Taylor 1.

Mise En Scene- Costume

In this scene we can see differences between the two Taylors. Taylor 2 is wearing a skimpy cheer leaders outfit in front of a crowd were as Taylor 1 is covered up in her band costume and is singing from the sidelines. This helps the audience to continue to route for Taylor 1

In this scene we can again see how casual Taylor 1 is dressed. By having her costume so down dressed it means that when she does wear the dress to prom it heightens her change/transformation. Taylor still looks natural with minimal makeup and her hair is down and curly however the main thing that makes her look natural and innocent is the white dress. This colour has connotations of being pure and of a wedding. With the lighting and how people part when she walks in she also seems like an angel in white. These religious connotations continue with Taylor 2 compared to Taylor 1, she is wearing red which could be seen as the ‘devil’. However the connotations of red are lust and to match that she is showing a lot of flesh because the dress is revealing. This creates a big contrast between the two. As the audience you are picking who is the better character and so is Lucas.
