Evaluation Proforma for Ranking of Agricultural University
for the year 2018
Brief Profile of the University
The term “Marathwada” has its origin in the word “Mara-hatti-vada (Mar-hat-vada)”,
meaning a region of Maratha community. Mughal king Muhammad Shah appointed a Turani
noble Asaf Jahi as the Vazir of Mughal Empire in 1722, but in 1724 he left for the Deccan to
start his own kingdom and took the title Nizam-ul-Mulk. Marathwada became a part of Nizam‟s
domain, which later came to be known as the princely state of Hyderabad outside but under the
suzerainty of British India. (“Nizam” became the title of the ruling descendants of Nizam-ul-
Mulk).
On August 15, 1947, British India was partitioned into two independent states, the Union
of India and Pakistan, and the Nizam ruling Hyderabad State at that time chose not to merge
Hyderabad state into either country. Subsequently, through Operation Polo, a “police action” on
September 17, 1948, the Indian army annexed Hyderabad to India. On November 1, 1956,
Marathwada was transferred from Hyderabad state to Bombay state. On May 1, 1960, Bombay
state was divided into Maharashtra and Gujarat states, Marathwada becoming a part of the
former.
The agricultural research in Marathwada region of Maharashtra was laid by the erstwhile
Nizam State with commencement of the Main Experimental Farm at Parbhani in 1918. The first
college of Agriculture was established in this region at Parbhani in 1956 by Hyderabad State
Government just before State reorganization. During Nizam's rule and was affiliated to Osmania
University, Hyderabad. The Marathwada Krishi Vidyapeeth (Presently renamed as Vasantrao
Naik Marathwada Krishi Vidyapeeth) established in 1972 on Land grant pattern at Parbhani to
fulfill the regional aspirations of agrarian growth. Maharashtra is the third largest state in India
and occupies a total geographical area of 307.7 lakh ha spread over in thirty six districts. The
State Government of Maharashtra extended the name of the University on 1 July 2013 as
Vasantrao Naik Marathwada Krishi Vidyapeeth, Parbhani. The University is entrusted with the
responsibilities to provide education in agriculture and allied fields, undertake research and
facilitate technology transfer in Marathwada region of Maharashtra. Vasantrao Naik Marathwada

Extension Education
26. It is observed that monocropping is prominent in all the districts of Marathwada with
soybean and cotton as major crops grown under rainfed situation. Failure of crops due to
drought was the main cause of farmers suicide. Therefore, it is recommend to initiate
Integrated Farming System (IFS) which will diversify the income sources of marginal
and small farmers and to create awareness for increasing the participation of the farmers
by various extension agencies to construct farm ponds, recharge of wells/bores, water
conservation techniques (JalUkatShivar) and judicious use of available water through
drip and sprinkler irrigation.
27. For creating hope amongst the severely distressed farmers in Marathwada region, it is
recommended to provide psychological counseling facilities at village level by
government agency. Similarly daughters‟ marriage anxiety is one of the main social
causes of farmers‟ distress in the region, hence it is necessary to promote group marriages
in rural areas by government/non-government organizations.
28. It is observed from the study that productivity of pigeon pea has not increased
significantly during last thirty years in Parbhani and Nanded districts of Marathwada, so
it is recommended that the efforts may be made to disseminate improved Pigeon pea
production technology through extension agencies to improve the productivity levels
particularly in Parbhani and Nanded districts.
