How does your media product represent

particular social groups?

The target audience for my media product is aimed at ages 16-30. This is because I have based the artists in my magazine on real life music artists. Such as Bombay Bicycle Club, The Kooks, Daughter, Lana Del Rey and more. The people who listen to these bands/artists are usually between the ages of my target audience.

You can see that my media product represents particular social groups because every ‘artist’ on my front cover is wearing similar colours (mainly dark) and has the same style.‘Indie’ people tend to wear clothes with strange/unique patterns on, this is why the shirt that Kayyah is wearing has a unique pattern on. Indie music magazines tend to dress the models of their magazines in these clothes and it represents indie music as it is a strange and unique style of music that can be hard to figure out, just like the patterns.

I also think the colours I have used for my magazine represents certain social groups as I have based the colours of

my magazine on colours from one of NME’s front cover and NME is read by a majority of the social groups I am representing. This impacts my magazine as these social groups will be attracted to my magazine.

Here on my contents page you can again see how my media product represents particular social groups. At the bottom left of my contents page there is two pictures:

These pictures represent a young indie social group because young ‘Indie’ people around the ages of 16-25 are thought of to stay out late and hang out in places such as where I have taken my images. Again this gives the mysterious feel to the magazine which matches the artists style of clothing. These social groups would see the magazine and want to buy it as the people in the magazine are just like them therefore they can relate to them and will want to read more.

Another convention of my media product that represents particular social groups is how I have used instagram facebook and twitter as these are all websites that are highly used by these social groups.

Another way conventions of my media product represent particular social groups is by the pull quote on my double page spread. “I can be quite hard to understand” – this links in with my running theme of uniqueness and mysteriousness because this personality matches their style. People of these social groups are different and people don’t quite get what they are about. This again means that these social groups can relate to my magazine and again I have reached my target audience.
