A2 Personal Study: Review and Evaluation The theme of Dramatic Images fascinates me because everyone has their own way that they view an image; the idea that an image is dramatic can change in a second if a single person has a connection with the image. The two questions I decided to explore within this essay are: ‘Why is this to be considered dramatic?’ and ‘What defines this photograph?’. I feel that exploring these questions will be interesting and the answers to these questions will lead to more questions that can help me to develop and further my theme. Some of the photographers I have chosen to study within my Personal Investigation are: Henri Cartier-Bresson, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Edward Weston, Alban Grosdidier and Matt Weber. These photographers all link to my project as I think they all create dramatic images, which contain a variety of subjects and styles. Many of the photographs I looked at seemed to be candid images, or at least taken to look like candid photographs. This led me to the decision that I wanted to make this a theme to be explored throughout my project and to find more photographers who create work of a similar nature. The research has also made me want to explore the use of a couple in a variety of locations and using a large amount of photographic techniques to show their intimacy in subtle and exaggerated photographs and to explore the final presentation of either a single photograph or the creation of narrative through a sequence of photographs. I intend to use the darkroom during this project, as it will give me the freedom to experiment. I like that the darkroom makes each photograph one of a kind and I would also like that to keep that thought each of my photo shoots – creating photographs that capture individual moments. I feel this provides me with the opportunity to develop my skills in the dark room. I also intend to develop my digital editing skills, using Adobe Bridge and Photoshop. I have also had the idea of getting a sketchbook so that I can use it as a journal of my photographs. Having a sketchbook allows me to try a variety of manual edits which will include drawing on my photographs, cutting them together, layering them and scratching into them. I will look for photographers that link to these techniques and will allow me to develop my project, further my knowledge of other photographers and incorporate inspiration into my work. I intend that each photo shoot will develop the content of my project and further my knowledge of camera, editing and dark room skills. At the beginning of the Personal Investigation, I was given a selection of titles to choose from and I decided that ‘Dramatic Images’ gave me the most flexibility. photographsmainlyinvolvedtheuseofshadowsandlowkeylighting.TherewerelotsofphotographsbythephotographerEdwardWeston;hisworkthenunleashedalargeamountofrelatedphotographers,includingHenri-CartierBressonandRobertDoisneau.Bothofthesephotographershadaselectionofphotographswhichsparkedmyinterest;thesewerethephotographsofthepeoplekissinginamomentthatlookscompletelycandid.

Theseimagesinspiredmetotryandemulatethisideainmyfirstphotoshoot.IcompletedaphotoshootinLondonwithsomefriendsofmine[addwhetheryouthinktheseweresuccessful].Aftercompletingtheshoot,IstartedtoquestionwhatIthink‘DramaticImages’meanstomeandtoothersandhowthatmightlinktothephotoshootthatIhadjustcompleted.Idecidedthatthisalllinkstomemoriesandhowmemoriesholdapersonalresponsetoaphotographwhichmaymeanthatotherpeoplemaynotfeelthesameresponse.ThisideareallyinterestedmeandafteraconversationwithmytutorIcametotheconclusionthatthetitleIhaddecidedtoinitiallystartwithwasverybroadandIshouldnarrowitdowntothetitleof‘Movements&Moments’,therebycontextualisingthetitle‘DramaticImages’intomyownpersonalinterpretation.

Atthisstage,Icameacrossthephotographof‘TheDecisiveMoment’byHenri-CartierBresson.AlthoughthisisaphotographerthatIhadalreadystudiedIrememberedthatwhenIwaslookingintohisworkpreviouslyIhadseenaphotographthatcaughtmyeye.Thishelpedmedevelopmyunderstandingthatsomephotographscaptureamomentandneednowordsorexplanation.Thisphotographisrenownedandknownbyallpeoplewhounderstandandhaveastronginterestintophotography.Itisdramatictomanypeopleandnotonlyisitadramaticimage,itisamovementwithinamoment.

ThereasonIdecidedonMovements&Momentswasbecausetome,theybothlinktogetheranditisstillabroadenoughtitlethatfitswithinmyinitialchoiceof‘DramaticImages’.PhotographyisamediumIenjoyandanavenuethatIusetoexpressmyself,soitseemedsensibletolinkthisenjoymentandexpressiontomyA-levelsothatthestudycantrulybecomeapersonalendeavour.Photographyforme,isawayofcapturingmomentsinmyhistoryanddocumentingthewaymylifedevelopsandprogresses.Inordertodevelopmythemeinathoroughmanner,Idecidedtocategorisethemintofourpathways:LiteralMovement,MovementinTime,PersonalMovementandConceptualMovement.ThereasonbehindmychoiceswassoIcanlinkalltheideastogethertocreateanin-depthstudyofavarietyofsubjectareas,suchaslandscapeandstill-lifeandtryoutphotographictechniquessuchastheuseofshutterspeed.LiteralMovementTheideaofLiteralMovementwassomethingIwishedtoexplorefrommyinitialresearch.Icameupwiththemainideafromthe‘MomentsinTime’photoshootwhereIphotographedacouplefrozenwithinaseaofmovement,createdbyusingslowshutterspeed.Itookthisideafurtherbutsolelyfocusingonthemovementofpeopleandtakingphotographsusingarangeofshutterspeeds.Afterpracticingthetechniqueandcompletingpracticalworkwithshutterspeedinordertounderstandandestablishtheimpactandchangeonaphotograph,IplannedaphotoshootinWindsortoputmytechniquesintopracticeandcreateafinalidea.

MovementintimeMovementinTimewasalaterideathatIheldwithinmyproject,IcametomewhileIwasstudyingJohnBlakemoreafterresearchontheinternet.AlthoughatfirstIdidnottakeaninitiallikingtohiswork,afterlookingintotheideaasawholeIdecideditwasasuccessfulwayofshowingaclearmovementintime,Ithenlookedintohisworkinmoredetailandspenttimeanalysinghowhehascapturedthephotographs,myinterestthengrewtowards

hiswork.ThistheninspiredmetocompleteasimilarshootalthoughIcompletedasimpleshootwithoneflower.IdecidedthatIenjoyedtheideaofcombiningthetwotogetherandthisthenresultedinmydecisiontouseacetateandlayerthemtogethertogivedepthtothephotographs.Thisalsoshowstheclearmovementintimeandtheresultinwhathasoccurredduetothemovement.Thephotographsbelowshowthedifferenceinthedeadandthealiveflower,althoughIdecidedtoeditthesephotographswiththealiveflowerinblackandwhiteandthedeadflowerincolour.ThiswasduetohowIwantedtoconveythetheorythatjustbecausesomethingisstillaroundusandsupposedtobebeautifuldoesnotmeanitisso,andtheoppositeforwhatwecouldthinktobegone,orold,itdoesnotmeanitisnolongerbeautiful,infact,inthecaseofthecolourflowerbelow,Iseeittobemorebeautiful,thecolourshavedeepenedandthetexturehasbeensharpenedwhichhascreatedasuccessfulphotograph.

ConceptualMovementIamtotallycaptivatedwiththeideaofdisposablecamerasafterlookingintohowcandidtheyare,nobodycangobackinandeditthephotograph,howtheycapturethatmomentintimewithnooutsideinfluence.Thisthoughttome,isbeautiful.Thisisthe‘Movement’thatIholdstrongfeelingsforasitisastoryclosetomyheartandalsomeaningfultomanypeoplewhosurroundme.ItisamovementthatisverycurrentwithinmylifeandthereisnotadayinwhichIdon’tthinkaboutthestorybehindthephotographs.SharingthesephotographswithasmallpoemtoencourageemotionwassomethingIbelievewillworkwhenportrayingthe‘ConceptualMovement’.IdecidedontheuseofapoemratherthanmyownpersonalwordsasIbelievethatwayitcanmakepeoplewhoviewmyworkthinkaboutwhatthestorycouldbebehindthephotographs,ratherthanjusttellingthestorywithoutgettinganyonetothinkandfeelforthework.PersonalMovementIhaddifficultywhenworkingonthePersonalMovementidea,tofullycapturemyideasinaphotographicformat.Thispathwaywasreallyimportanttomebecauseitisaboutcapturingmemoriesandcreatingimagesthataredramaticbecauseoftheirassociations

ratherthantheircontent.Havinggrownupwithdigitaltechnology,Istruggledusingmydisposablecameraandnotbeingabletoknowtheoutcomeofeachphotographuntilthefilmwasdeveloped.ItfeltreallyimportanttomethatItookallthephotographsononecamerasothattheoutcomewouldbecomeafinalpieceandIcouldrecordhowIfeltwhenIsawtheimagesforthefirsttime.TheproblemarosewhenIreceivedtheprintedphotographswasthecamerahadadefectiveshutterandthisresultedinanumberofmissingimages.ThismeantthatIwasleftwithlessofaselectionofphotographsthanIwasexpecting.IthereforemadethedecisiontoshelvethePersonalMovementpathwayandtoconcentrateondevelopingtheotherthreethemesinordertopresentastrongerpieceofwork.FinalCompositionandConclusionLayoutforthefinalcompletedcompositionoriginatedfrommystudyofDuaneMichals.Hisworkinterestsmeduetothewayinwhichthephotographswithinonesequencelink,andthenthisfurtherlinkswithotherwholesequenceframeshehascompleted.FromthismyideadevelopedintohavingframesthatlinktogetheralthoughunlikehisworkIwouldlookintotheuseofconnectingthemtogetherwithacompletechangeincontent,makingeachframelookindividualwithoutunderstandingthelinksIhavecreatedbehindthem.ForeachframeIdecidedonasimpleblackframewithawidecutmountsothatIwouldbeshowingthephotographsoffasindividualcreations,andalsoshowingthemtogetherasafinalpieceofwork.WhenlookingbackovermythemeandworkIcanseeadevelopmentwhichdeepenstheideasthatIhaveandthereisaclearpatternofprogressandIfeelthatIhavemanagedtoselectindividualpiecesofworkwhichlinkintoboththemoreconcentratedthemeof‘MovementsandMoments’althoughIthinkthatthisworkthenalsofitswithinthebracketof‘DramaticImages’.IthinkIhavemanagedtocoverthegeneralpartswithinthethemeandalsothemuchmorepersonaltaketotheprojectasawhole,whichIthinkhascreatedamuchclearerpictureinmymindwhenIthinkabouthowIwouldnowthinkof‘DramaticImages’andhowitwouldbealmostimpossibletocompleteafullprojectoneverypartofhowphotographsareportrayedtobedramatic,whichiswhyIthinknarrowingthetitlethenmademyendresultmoresuccessful.
