Evaluation of Main Task

By Ayesha Williams

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

My opening sequence takes many ideas from professional work, for example many youth dramas/ urban dramas involve a fight scene (as there are many stereotypes about youth and gangs) and this is exactly what myself and my group planned to do is fit in with the usual conventions.

This was decided after carrying out our secondary research, we looked at many different videos and analysed mise-en-scene and camera work.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My opening sequence represents a ‘youth’ social group through the clothing worn by the actors, for example jeans, tracksuits and trainers etc. My group also found actors and actresses of a similar age of the characters we created, by doing this it was easier to fit the stereotype of the ‘working class’ attitudes that we planned for our character to have. We had a mix between females and males in our opening sequence showing that they are of somewhat equal in society. We went with the usual stereotype of young people and gangs.

My opening sequence can be compared to films like ‘Kidulthood’ as it fits in with the ‘Urban Drama’ genre.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

I think that institutions like Revolver Entertainment will distribute our ‘film’ as they have distributed films like ‘Kidulthood’ and ‘Sket’. These films are under the same genre and it attracts the same target audience as ours.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

From research myself and my group carried out we found our target audience was those of a 14-22yr old age range though it was clear that more females were interested than females

How did you attract/address your audience?

Myself and my group carried out a questionnaire approaching our target audience, from this we found out that the target audience was interested in urban dramas.

We then did a survey, showing our target audience a clip from ‘Green Street 2’ and asked them various questions about what they thought of the clip, this information we then applied it to our opening sequence; ideas such as clothing, violent scenes etc.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I have learnt how to use ‘Final Cut’ effectively, varying in different effects, how to cut and add transitions etc. I was rocky with this during the preliminary task and feel much more comfortable with using this now then I was before.

It is not only ‘Final Cut’ that I feel more comfortable with, I have learnt more about the camera and equipment for example camera shots and how to adjust the camera to fit different scenarios, this again I was rough with at the start and now feel much more comfortable using it.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression it to the full product?

I feel that I've learnt plenty from the preliminary task, I’ve learnt how to plan out the blog page, how to lay out our blog page and how to split up work equally. I feel the blog page ran smoothly in comparison to the preliminary task.
