  • 1. Rap Revolution Evaluation By Gurdeep Rai

2. Here you can see I have used the idea of the main character to be placed on the right side of the page which leaves space on the right for the text. I have purposely used this image because it represents a young successful rapper and supports the aim of the magazine to promote young talent. He is wearing dark clothes in casual manner to represent his look and style. Here you can see I have used the idea from an existing magazine cover. The pose of him holding his belt in that posture. I used this effect because I feel it helps represent artists and their attitude, stance and style. Also this magazine is about the upcoming fourth generation for the industry, which is whyI have used an image of a young teenager who is growing in confidence with recent success. As you can see I have used the colors red, black and white throughout my magazine cover. I used the idea from another Hip Hop genre magazine called XXL. I have used the idea from this magazine cover. The letter P with CONNECTION has been used. Similarly I used R for both Rap and Revolution. I used this effect as it saves space and looks effective. Altogether on this slide you can see that I have conventions from different magazines and combined them to help me make my magazine look realistic and effective. I have also used the ideas from the magazine Hip Hop Connection. My main strap-lines are in the color red to emphasize the importance of the headlines. 3. For my double-page spread I have used the idea from an existing double page spread from a magazine. I have purposely used the similar effect of small text in three columns. This effect best suited my magazine double page spread as it describes Isaacs life story. As you can see I have also used the effect of big main text on the image. The first word is smaller than the second and it portrays what the double-page spread is based on. I have used the color red for the text as it is consistent with my magazine whereas in the (existing) other magazine double page spread it is written in white and silver. The difference between my double page spread and this one is that I have used up the space in the middle from the top with the text and also included another image on the top right above the text. I purposely did this as it creates a better effect and supports the layout I chose. In this double-page spread I have used professional language to make it look more realistic. Also I have talked about how Isaac got into this profession of Hip Hop. The reason I used this topic is because recently there has been a number of newcomers within this industry who are gaining instant success and fame. For example WC is an example like Isaac in this case as he also came back into the industry after a few years with a successful album. This reflects with the modern day and the type of news being expressed in magazines, about newcomers or comebacks by talented artists. So I also based my double-page spread on Isaac who struggled and faced hurdles, however finally made his mark into the industry with his talent. 4. Here you can see an existing contents page from a magazine called Hip Hop Connection. The front cover to this magazine consists the main colors red and white. I used the idea of the colors red and white as I kept consistency throughout my magazine because I have used these colors in my front cover. I have also used the ideas of keeping headlines bigger above, followed by smaller text. This helps save more space and enter more information. However I have aligned it into three columns whereas it is aligned to the right in the existing magazine contents page. I have also used the idea of an image cutting in from the right however I have kept it smaller whereas in the other contents page on the right (existing contents page) the image has been used to cover the whole page as the main focus. As you can see I have used the idea from the front cover to this magazine. I used the idea of this image. However I changed it slightly with the character looking up into the sun whereas on the front cover the character is looking straight. Another difference I have made to it is I have placed the image on the right where it is cutting in from the right in the front cover. 5. Target audience and objective

  • My magazine is based on young talented rappers who are stepping into the Hip Hop industry. This magazine is aimed at young teenagers, because it helps portray young talent and guides newcomers into this profession.
  • In this contents page the artists I have used reflects the target audience as they are young teenagers who are seen as the forthcoming generation within the industry. By using these young artists it suggests this magazine is aimed towards young men near 20-23 or teenagers from 16-19.
  • I have purposely named the pages differently with names of popular artists such as Lil Wayne and Eminem to attract the audience, and keep them interested with recent gossip. I have used some rhetorical questions in my titles to the pages, to get the reader guessing and interested, such as What has Eminem got to say? is used as a cliff hanger keeping the reader interested.

6. Colours, Font and Images

  • On the front cover as you can see I have used two images of young teenagers who are representing young artists in the industry. I purposely used an image of him standing in such a posture to represent the more famous artists in this profession. His facial expressions demonstrate the rough, tempered, ignorant attitude and style of artists in the industry such as Lil Wayne.

I used these titles on the front cover as they keep the customers interested and attract their attention. For example Lil Waynes latest single; this appeals to the customers and attracts customers. I purposely used names of famous artists such as Chris Brown and Jay Z to create importance for Isaac who is used on my double-page spread, and to inform the customers about the main stories/gossip which will be included in the magazine.I used the colours red, black and white because they are the most common colours used in hip hop music magazines. For example: 7. Your Media Product

  • In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  • I feel my magazine is very professional and challenges existing magazines which evolve around the same genre. My magazine includes all the content and latest information the forthcoming generations would be searching for. This magazine helps advertise the young teenagers who are stepping into such a challenging profession. However this magazine also includes information about existing famous artists and their interviews, meetings, press conferences and rumours. This challenges the existing magazines as it includes similar information, gossip and rumours but at a cheaper price which means it would attract more customers.

8. Your Media Product In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? My magazine includes different types of information, this is shown through the stories shown on the front cover and contents page. This magazine challenges real magazines such as XXL and Vibe which are very common magazines in this profession, due to the interesting stories and professional images I have used throughout my magazine. It has all possible latest stories and news within the industry. This magazine I have created includes not only the new youngsters in this musical field, also the very experienced and famous artists such as DR DRE and JAY Z. The variety of information in my magazine challenges other magazines which include similar stories about only the famous artists. For example: 9. I feel it challenges real media products, as it covers a variety of topics and includes everything a customer would look for when buying a magazine. Another reason why I feel it challenges other existing magazines is because it is at a cheap cost of 3.99, yet it includes all these features. Customers would look for their best buy. My magazine is cheap and convenient with all the content needed. Your Media Product In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? 10. What it represents?

  • How does your media product represent particular social groups?
  • My magazine represents the Hip Hop industry artists and how they have a very gangster type approach, with a rough and tempered look. These elements are represented through the body language and actions of the artists in the images. For example the similarity with these two images is that in both they have serious facial expressions with laid back, controlled postures. These images support the stereotypes of relaxed artists who do it their way and see themselves as the best.

Here you can see examples of magazine front covers and how the artists usually have tempered, Im it type facial expressions. This is the reason why I used images of young artists with similar attitude and posture in order to reflect the genre and Hip Hop industry artists. 11. Challenges I faced

  • What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
  • Before creating this magazine the only time I used Photoshop was whilst doing my preliminary task. From that task to this task I can see a vast change and improvement as I learnt over time how to use the software appropriately. Using Photoshop was very hard at first however I gradually understood the concept and equipment needed within this software.
  • Throughout the construction of my product I faced many difficulties such as I did not understand how I should lay out my content, or I would not know how to smudge in an image onto the cover. However gradually over time I learnt how to use Photoshop, and thought of the ideas. Throughout the construction period I have learnt a lot more about the Apple Macs and its processes, Photoshop, camera angles and magazine context. The research task before creating the magazine was very useful as it helped increase my understanding and knowledge about magazines and specific elements which are very useful in the build up to your magazine such as the use of Mise-en-scene, editing and so fourth.

12. Challenges I faced What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? From: To: From the preliminary task up to the creation of the magazine I have learnt a number of methods about Photoshop which helped me create a better Contents Page. Here you can see a huge difference between the style of work in both contents pages and how I have improved on using Photoshop. I learnt how to overlap the images, blend the images in with the background. Whereas in the preliminary task I did not know how to overlap two images. The work we did on researching about magazines also helped me create mine as I learnt more about how to style out the text, where to place the text and the type of images which are used in Hip Hop magazines. 13. Improvements over time Throughout the construction of my magazine I had to make a number of changes to the work in order to make the final piece. As you can see first I tried to use the dark grey background with black and white text. However after looking at other Hip Hop magazines I learnt the colors black, red and white are mostly used with Hip Hop orientated magazines. This is why I made changes to my front cover and amended the layout of my magazine.
