ROMAINE WEDDERBURN

How helpful was your analysis research on your chosen theme?

For my textural analysis research I analysed ‘The Woman in Black’; in the movie I focused on camera, editing, sound and mise-en-scene. My analysis research helped a lot because it helped me realise the codes and conventions that I had to include in my own story to ensure that it was as realistic as possible. In our media lessons we analysed both ‘making a murderer’ and ‘Prison break’. This was extremely helpful, due to the fact that it showed us how different media tools are used (e.g. cuts and transitions) in two totally different genres of films. This helped to indicate where different cuts and transitions would have to be implemented depending on the genre of our story.

How helpful/successful was the pre-production process?

The pre-production process consisted of: recce, storyline, treatment, call sheet and a storyboard. The recce was really helpful because it was used to establish where every scene will take place, also it identified all risks and hazards that could of potentially disrupted the filming process. The storyline was the most helpful and the most important out of all the pre-production documents because it contained all our planning and what was going to be done, which meant that we could easily refer back to it if we were stuck. The call sheet contained everyone's role and what everyone was meant to be doing. The call sheet also included what props were being used and where they were being used. The storyboard is was also extremely helpful as well as the storyline because it contained all the shot angles and shot types.

How successful was your production (filming) ?

In my opinion the filming process was successful. I think this because our group took very little time to film due to the fact that our story was well planned, which meant that we could begin filming straight after being told. Also we were well organised and knew what shots we were going to take one after the other.

Strengths and weaknesses

Weakness:- There was a disagreement between myself and the group, due to the fact that I didn’t want to be in front of the camera.

Strength:- Me and my group were able to share ideas and come up with great film idea.

Audience feedback

The continuity in the short film was good and very realistic, which allowed the film to run smoothly and to seem very real. Also the audience felt that great choices of music were chosen to represent the film and they were implemented perfectly in each scene, which made it much easier for the audience to recognise what was occurring in each scene. A good use of a close up was shown at the start of the film to indicate what the audience were meant to be focusing on at the time in the film. However there was one particular part in the film that the audience found to be quite long.

What improvements could you have made?

- We could have shortened the part in the movie that audience felt was quite long to make it flow better.

- We could have used close up shots on both Tawny and Ricardo’s face to emphasise their feelings and facial expressions.

- More funny scenes could have been included in the film because initially our genre was comedy but as a group we didn’t feel that it was as funny as we had pictured.

- We could have also used some sound at the start of the film.
