OUGD303 Evaluation 1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them? Over the course of this module I have focused largely on developing my hand-drawn type skills; something that I have not spent a lot of time on in recent years. As this is one of the main things I would like to specialise in, I have attempted to utilise these skills as much as possible in this module, and as a result have vastly improved my abilities in this area. Alongside this I have continued to develop my branding skills in the cultural sector, something that I’m sure will be useful in the future. I have also spent some time considering how to use image work effectively alongside type. 2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process? Compared to previous modules, I have made a conscious effort to alter the methods by which I develop design work: as I have begun to work more with hand-drawn lettering, it has changed the way I carry out a project. Previously I was far more focused on producing work digitally, and in many cases this would leave me struggling to identify an end-point as such, whereas by spending a lot more time building up work by hand it became clearer as to what stage I was at in the design process. In many ways this change in design production has benefitted the development process and allows me to feel more satisfied with the work I produce. 3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these? In general, working with a number of different disciplines within typography is a strength I possess to a certain extent (or would certainly appreciate having). I also feel as though I have developed a strength in terms of working with colour, which is something I have neglected in previous modules. 4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future? The one obvious weakness that is apparent throughout many of the briefs is the lack of range development – a few times the number of deliverables has remained slightly low. In the future I will ensure to create a range even if the brief does not strictly ask for this.
