EVALUATION

Page 2: Evaluation

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of

real media products? In my media product I have used forms and conventions.

Colour Scheme: The hip hop magazines I have researched, the colour is always black, grey, white and red, but red always changes to green, orange etc. Based on the theme of the magazine, they chose the colour to represent the theme of the magazine. E.g. violence and poverty, the colour of the magazine could be red. -For my magazine, I chose red for the colour schemebecause it would represent the theme of my magazine;‘violence and life’

Page 3: Evaluation

Photograph: I used formal and informal photographs, as the rapper is looking at the camera in an aggressive way based on the theme of the magazine. The clothing they wear are all ‘sports wear,’ giving it a more ‘gangster’ aggressive look.

-For my magazine, I decided to use an informal photograph on the front cover but with the right pose based on the theme of my magazine (violence and life) and the ‘sports wear’ clothing to represent the genre of the magazine. For the double spread my character is posing in a way that willmake him look aggressive and violent.

-From the image below, the character poses his hand as if it was a gun, this clearly shows the genre of the magazine been violent and rough. The character is looking straight at the camera and point at the reader as if he has a gun, making it look more violent and symbolising the genre.

Fonts: - For the masthead and the cover lines, the fonts clearly represent the genre of the magazine, making it look ruff and aggressive. The fonts also have the style of a basketball/ sporty theme as the genre of this magazine bases itself on that as well. This gave me the knowledge of being able to chose right font to represent the genre of my magazine.

Writing Style:

For my magazine, the language is based on the genre of the magazine as different genres use different forms of language.

I used the word ‘tunes’ to talk about the songs. This word is used a lot on this type of genre. The other word I used was ‘swagge it’ which means like go and enjoy. I used the word ‘big bash’ meaning an extravaganza party or wedding.

This type of words which people don’t know what they mean are used in this type of genre which only people influenced by the hip hop/street genre understand the meaning of this words and use of language.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The character is working class, this can be seen through the clothes his wearing (polo shirt, hat, jewellery). The audience is working/middle class, they would be able to afford this magazine and things based on the hip hop/street genre due to disposable income. He is 20 years old, which fits to the genre of the magazine which is based at the age 18-44, because my age range in so broad with different age categories. The character is representational of the age range (18-25). How ever this conflict with representing the higher age range (34- 44). However he is features because it will inspire higher age range.

Page 7: Evaluation

The character’s ethnicity is Latin which represents the genre of the magazine as there is a massive majority of Latin, Caribbean and black people which are influenced by the hip hop/street music.

The character on the front cover and double spread is a male because it not just attracts females and those who like the rapper on the cover and the story behind them but also because there is more male rappers and always have something hidden or special which makes them attract the readers attention, even if males as they get influenced by them. The audience of this magazine are most males than females even though there is not that much of a difference. For the contents page, the character is a female to not only represent females but also because it attracts the males attention of the female model.

What kind of media institution might distribute

your media product and why?

The media institution that might distribute my media product is Bauer because the magazines which I have research are American based and this institution will represent the magazine as being a British based print.

I have researched the institution for the hip hop magazines but they isn’t a clear understanding to which institution distributes this magazines as they are all American based print.

Even though Bauer doesn’t distribute this kind of magazines, it will give it a massive opportunity to make one of the hip hop magazines British based as they are a big majority in London and some of England who are influence on the hip hop genre.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience for my music magazine would be:-

Between the age of 18-44 as it doesn’t only influence young people but adults as this genre has been on for a long amount of period even though this genre represents more the younger generation as it keeps growing.

The gender my magazine is mostly based on are more males than females even though there isn’t that much of a different. The reason for this is because a high number of males get influenced by the rapper and try follow their steps to be who they are. However females also get influenced not only by male rappers but females who’s becomes someone from being no one to start with.

My magazine would be aim at not only the younger generation but the older generation who is still influence on the hip hop culture which hasn’t just been on for a long amount of period but also because it has a bit of history as a rapper before becoming a rapper has had a poor, hard, normal life like all of us which shows that nothing is impossible.

How did you attract/address your audience?

They way I attracted my audience was by the use of font for both masthead and cover lines as it gives a clear understanding of the genre of the magazine. The font I used makes the magazine give the hip hop/street theme genre.

The other way which I attracted my audience was they way the I took the photographs, specially the photograph on the front cover which attracts the audience with the characters pose of praying.

lastly the colour scheme I chose, white, black, grey and red as the colour red represents what theme the magazine is (violence, life), also as red is a catchy colour and it stands out with the white and grey.

Page 11: Evaluation

The words I used to address the audience were ‘Tunes’ as if the hip hop culture/genre that word is most used to describe songs. Everything hip hop fan know what it means when they see the word tune.

I also used the word ‘swagge’ which it sometimes said ‘swagger’ meaning when wearing clothes all the same colour or nearly all of the same colour but on this context it tries say that is your change at the concert to come all well dressed, with a ‘swagger’. The fans know and understand the meaning of that word as they are involved in the culture of hip hop/street. This is a word that no one that is not influenced by this genre wouldn’t know what it means and wouldn’t of heard before.

The word ‘Bash’ means when a big party or wedding is going to occur, only hip hop/street or people involved on this genre understand the meaning and feel confortable as they know what it’s been said.

Page 12: Evaluation

The photography I used clearly addresses the audience by the way the model is posing, giving the audience the understanding of hope and faith. Also in this type of genre, religious symbols are always used to represent faith, thanksgiving etc.

The clothes the model wears are all sporty clothes with jewellery ‘bling’ which represent the dress sense of the genre hip hop/street.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of

constructing this product?

PowerPoint Word Publisher Photoshop InDesign Blogger

The software I have used on the process to my final product are :-

The hardware I used during my project are :-

Computer Camera

I have never used a blog before, and using one this time for my coursework was helpful and not hard to use as it helped me organize my work which I was able to know what I have done. Also I was able to get feed back which was really helpful not only from the tutor but from students.

Without this technologies it would have been a bit difficult creating my product as I need different tools on Photoshop to make it look professional.

However, its not always reliable to used a computer because there is always technical faults which prevents us from using them computer.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

What I’ve learned during the progress of my final product from the preliminary task is that you can’t design a magazine without having researched and having knowledge of the genre you are going to design as you need to know what you need to include and how it should be layout, also the type of language which should be used.

As well, I have learned the type of photography required based on the genre as it needs to give a clear understanding of what type of magazine it is without having to read it.
