EVALUATION ONE
BY BETH OLIVER
In what ways does your media
product use, develop or
challenge forms and
conventions of real media
products?
Where have your ideas come from? How were you inspired to do what
what you did?
For inspiration we mainly looked at other music videos from the Indie Alternative genre, as
well as even looking at few videos from the genre, rock alternative.
We also like the entropic idea of Superheroes/Super-villains, we which discovered through
watching TV and films, as well as some other music videos. We thought that this idea
could link into the indie genre well, as some indie videos can be quite entropic.
Our video and theirs
For the locations we
looked at both
performing in a
forest and a town
setting.
We liked the idea of the performance element in a forest as it fitted
the indie genre, and made the video mysterious and entropic. We
used a town setting because it was a redundant feature, which
clashed with the fact that the superheroes were committing crimes
(entropic feature).
Our video and theirs
For our costume,
we were inspired
by the ‘Superluv’
video. The artist
wears a bright pink,
superhero-style
one-sie with boot
covers and a cape.
We decided to
base our costumes
on Shane
Dawson’s take on a
superhero costume
(however we chose
not to use capes to
due health and
safety reasons).
Our video and theirs
We took the idea of the masks
from the original music video for
‘More than know’. We liked the
fact that it give the idea of
enigma and mask also linked in
with the idea of superheroes.
We got the idea of superheroes
from some of the lyrics (e.g. ‘We’re
out of control’ and ‘making plans’ –
which we felt could be linking to the
villains).
My digipak, cd and advert
To make sure that
my print package
linked to my music
video, I used
woodland/forest
shots and an image
of a mask. This
creates continuity
between the video
and the print
products. I also
made sure that I
used plenty of shots
of the artist so that I
was promoting him
well; this also linked
back to the video
(which has many
shots of our artist in).
I was inspired by Florence
and The Machine’s
digipak, for ‘Lungs’. I liked
the forest and mystical
feel it gave off.
How did your audience research direct your creativity? Did you
respond to what audiences said about work in progress?
MY AUDIENCE PROFILE:
By completely proper research
into my target audience I was
able to reflect my creativity by
creating a print package that
fitted the genre and my target
audience.
Audience feedback
^^^ This is the feedback for my first attempt
at a magazine advert.
This is the feedback for my finished advert.
>>>
I got feedback on all of my work, so that
I could make sure that I sticking to my
target audience and so that I could get
an ‘outside-opinion’ on my products.
How is your media product like ‘real’
products?
Although I tried to make my media products as realistic as possible it was
restricted due to a lack of professional equipment and software. This was due
to budgeting and lack of funding.
However, I tried to make my work look as professional as possible, so I added
copyrighting and a record label (Fierce Panda Records) to make my print work
look realistic. I also added other key conventions of a digipak such as at least
11 tracks and a barcode. I also promoted the artist on my digipak and
advert, which is another (and probably one of the most important) key
convention of print products.
In what way have you been original?
Apart from the obvious things like, using
original fonts; I tried to use fonts that have
not been used before, but still link to the
genre on Alternative/Indie Rock.
Also, I used original photos and editing for
my print products that were different to rest
of my group’s photos. Again I tried to use
images that fitted the genre of the
music, but were also unique.
I think my print products are quite
entropic, which links to the music video
which is also entropic because of the use of
the superheroes; which is un-expected.
