A bold, dominating masthead has been printed in capitals so that it is easy to read and doesn’t cause any confusion with the rest of the text. I used a basic font which still connotes new, modern ideas and fits in with the genre of magazine. The title being ‘pop’ world allows the readers to know what genre of magazine it is.

As you can see the image on the right is my magazine front cover. I have tried to stick to conventional ideas in order to make it similar to a real magazine as well as to fit into the pop style of magazine. I have used many conventional features which you will be able to notice in the next slide. The only area which I have decided to challenge is the use of a tag line. This is because I feel that with the Top of the Pops magazine, it isn’t really on show meaning it is really necessary and not much attention is paid to it.

As you can see the image above is a Top of the Pops front cover. Some of the most obvious conventions that it has included are a big bold masthead, displaying the title/name of the magazine. Bright colours are used throughout to draw in the reader’s attention and to make the magazine more cheerful and interesting to the eye. The main sell line is to do with the artist presented in a mid shot in the centre of the cover. The sell line is splashed across the artists’ body to heighten ideas that she had said that quote. This is reinforced by her name being printed in bold above the quote. As well as this there is an anchorage ‘world exclusive’ which could also been seen as a feature to entice the reader into buying the magazine. Several sell lines have been included around the cover to make the magazine seem more interesting and to give the readers more of an insight on what features in the magazine. A skyline is also provided to make the cover seem a little more adventurous. As always a bar code has been included at the bottom of the page, as well as WOB writing has been used displaying the issue date and number above it. Text boxes have also been used around the cover to separate the stories making the cover more appealing.

I have used text boxes to separate the different sell lines; this makes each individual story to stand out.

I have used several mid shot images of different artists who feature in the sell lines. All of them are providing direct eye contact helping to make a connection with the readers. If readers see that other artists feature in the magazine, they may be more found of buying it as there’s more gossip to read about.

As you can see the image on the left is a contents page style model from Top of the Pops magazine. This again has many conventional features which make it look like a typical music magazine. There is a text box at the top of the page containing the masthead. At the end of this is an ellipsis which creates ideas that there is a lot more information to be found out if you continue reading the magazine. As well as this there are a lot of separate text boxes containing information about a particular section of the magazine. Beside it, it has the page number that the stories/content is located on. Large mid shot images are placed around the contents to give insights that they are featuring in the magazine. The large page number placed on top of the image tells the reader what page you will find them on. This applied with the accessories that are shown. These accessories may be shown as girls like bags and jewellery so are more interested in seeing maybe where they are being sold. At the bottom of the contents page is a page number informing the reader on what page they are reading from and these are continued throughout the magazine. The technique used on this page number is white on black, which allows it to stand out from the rest of the text while still remaining out the way at the bottom of the page.

As you can see the image on the right is my contents page. When creating this I tried to follow conventional ideas in order for it to look like a real music magazine, however I also challenged some aspects in order for it to be a little bit more original and to put my own ‘stamp’ on it. The aspect I challenged with this is including an editor’s letter at the bottom of the contents page. As you can see my style model didn’t have one, but I feel that teenage girls could read it and in a way relate to it. It could be seen as some sort of figure to the target audience informing them on what to expect. It also gives the magazine more of a personal touch which could make the readers feel more comfortable and relaxed. The next slide shows the features I used to create my contents.

The title of the contents page as the masthead printed into it. This allows the readers to familiarise themselves with the title of the magazine. The colours I have chose are purple which is light and portrays a warm friendly vibe.

The use of the ellipsis at the end of the title welcomes the readers into the magazine, hoping the will feel comfortable with that the magazine holds.

As you can see the image on the left is a double page spread style model from Top of the Pops magazine. Several conventional features have been used such as bursts, text boxes, anchorage and direct eye contact to make it look like a typical music magazine. There is an ‘Exclusive WIN’ anchorage which could act as a hook in order for the magazine to gain more interest. A mid/long shot has been used which dominates the page and gives clear identifications that the article is about ‘Cheryl Cole’. The information is formatted in an interview technique which demonstrates the text being more personal and makes the readers feel involved. This is also presented in a text box so it stands out from the background and making it easier to read. Other text boxes are used around the page to section the information, making it more appealing. Bursts are also used which supply information about what is taking place in the interview and a quote from what Cheryl says. This can again draw in reader’s attention and gives the layout more variation. As you can see, in the majority of the images the artists are giving the camera direct eye contact making the readers feel more directed and focuses on the article.

From over viewing my three documents; front cover, contents page and double page spread, I have mainly stuck to conventional ideas in order to create the correct mood and tone of the magazine. Besides this I have challenged some aspects of the style models to experiment and see if they worked well with the genre of magazine or not. The main feature that I challenged would be the editor’s letter on the contents. I felt that this was needed to give the contents more substance and to make it a little bit more exciting and adventurous to read. In my opinion I think this worked well as it didn’t take up much room and gave it a personal touch – making it sound like there was an older figure guiding them and supplying information about what there is to come. Another feature that I challenged was the tag line and media institute logo on the front cover. The reason on why I decided to not include these was because I felt they were irrelevant and readers didn’t really take much notice of them. With these not present it meant more attention could be paid to the sell lines and main stories of the magazine. From looking at my front cover, I cannot tell that these conventional features are missing, however if they were put on it would have made the cover look more detailed. The main technique I used was by creating a studio style shot of the main artist that will be featuring in my magazine. In order to do this I set up a photo shoot with the correct lighting and background props to make it look conventional. Alongside this I made sure that I dressed her in the correct clothing to suit the style of the music magazine. I chose girly clothing and colours as these will most likely attract my target audience. The model is attractive which is also conventional as a lot of pop artists are good looking; this goes to support the ideology of pop artists.During the process of my magazine I tried to stick to a house style by maintaining the 3 colour scheme and continuously using the same font and font sizes. Effectively this will make the magazine more recognisable. The area which I developed was the target audience. I chose to target similar ages of 12-17 year old females as I feel young girls would be most interested in this kind of information. I done a lot of primary research which involved following the steps of ‘SAGEL’ social-economic class, age, gender, ethnicity and lifestyle in order to achieve my end product.

I have used two bursts which contain background information and quotes from what the artist has said in her interview. Effectively the reader would read the burst
