Evaluating existing learning resources
Once existing resources have been identified, the next step is to evaluate whether they meet:
■ the teaching and learning needs of the resource (identified in the needs analysis phase)
■ accessibility standards
■ basic quality standards (eg, are underpinned by appropriate theories of teaching and learning, easy to access, follow current principles of learning design)

Evaluation checklists
CLI has developed checklists that help to guide reviewers when they are evaluating existing resources. The checklists can be adapted and include questions about:
■ the currency of the resource/product
■ the structure of the resource
■ ease of access
■ appropriateness of the content
■ motivational aspects of the resource
■ ability to meet training package/unit requirements
■ level of support required to use the resource
■ level of modification required to enable use of the resource

An example of the CLI evaluation process:
PWS■ identified and contracted reviewers (recommended by Reference Group for the
project)
■ adapted checklist to suit requirements
■ developed spreadsheet template for reviewers to record results
■ sent checklist, template and resources to reviewers

Preparation for Work and Study (PWS) – example of the learning resource evaluation process
To ensure that teachers gained something from the review process a CD-ROM has been created that includes:
■ resource reviews (detailed and summary)
■ all the teaching and learning resources that were recommended by reviewers
■ a help section to assist teachers to download resources and provide tips on customising resources.

Summary
When reviewing resources, its important to have a framework to ensure the review process is consistent.
■ checklists can be useful
■ spreadsheet templates ensure all reviewer feedback can be easily compiled and is easy to work with
■ summary documents allow reviewer feedback to be made available to other teachers
