3 ¿Why El Salvador? | Eva Tours S.A. de C.V. | Confidential Tariff

¿Why El Salvador?

Despite being the smallest country in Central America El

Salvador has a great deal to offer. It is mostly a mountainous

land with a narrow coastal belt with a variety of attractive

vistas to contemplate. Our capital city is surrounded by

amazing natural features, with a geography dominated by a

central plateau crossed by numerous river valleys, among

which the River Lempa valley stands out as the longest in the

country. The plateau has an average altitude of 600 metres

above sea level and is flanked by two mountainous chains of

volcanic origin. In the extreme north of the country high and

rugged mountains are located, such as the highest summit of Cerro El Pital, more than 2700 metres above sea

level. In addition El Salvador also has the only coral reef on the Pacific coast in the area of Central America.

Our country has a great diversity of natural environments to experience as well as a wide range of other

attractions to visit from ancient Mayan ruins to modern shopping centres. Being a small country journey times

are short: in the space of one day you can visit rugged mountain ranges or climb a volcano, then have lunch in

San Salvador and relax at the end of the afternoon beside the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean.

The culture of El Salvador is a mixture of the Mayan, Lenca, Náhuatl, Ulúa and Spanish cultures, the official

language is Spanish and a part of the population still speaks Nahuatl. English is spoken in the most important

tourist destinations.

Our main industries are food and drinks, with the most typical food the “pupusa” made with maize, which was

known by our ancestors as “the grain of gold”. We also have textiles, furniture and small-scale industries, this

last one being very common all over the country and contributing in an important way to the national

economy.

The Mayan presence can be best seen in the most important archaeological discovery in recent years in Latin

America. The Joya de Cerén, a Mayan village known as “the Pompeii of the Americas” was declared by UNESCO

as a World Heritage Site in 1993. El Salvador is definitively a land of enchantment which offers a wide range of

tourist options with a unique character, accompanied by a friendly and hospitable population.

¡WELCOME!

Miramundo, Cihuatán and Vegetable Plantations.

Departing from the hotel, we will visit the archaeological site of Cihuatán (”place of women”).

The city of Cihuatán, is one of the more spectacular and more important archaeological treasures of Central

America which has remained largely unknown until the present time. The modern world received the first news

of Cihuatán in 1878 when the neighbours of Guazapa told the German-North American traveller, Simeon Habel,

that he had passed through the ruins of a city hidden in the forest during his trip from Chalatenango to Guazapa.

The old city of Cihuatán was left hidden and covered by the forest until the 1930´s, when the population of the

valley grew by migration and the adjacent town of Aguilares was founded. In 1925 the North American

archaeologist Samuel Lothrop visited the site and made a map of the western ceremonial centre.

The Salvadoran government bought the lands of the western ceremonial centre and declared Cihuatán a

national monument in 1977.

After the visit, we will continue until arriving at the vegetable plantations with majestic landscapes and an

pleasant climate between 18º and 30º C.

The Miramundo mountain has panoramic views of coniferous forests and of the mountains of Honduras, as it is

situated on the borders of the two countries. Later we will enjoy a delicious lunch in the Entre Pinos Hotel or

the Miramundo Inn. Then, on the way back we will stop in the city of La Palma, famous for its colourful

handicrafts.

Peace Route.

We will visit the town of Perquín, a settlement founded by Lenca tribes long before the colonial era. In Lenca

language Perquin means “Way of ignited coals” since for a long time they used flints to make fire. Here we will

visit the Museum of the Revolution, where we will learn the history and causes of the armed conflict in El

Salvador. Then we will walk towards the hill of Perquín, where we will have a beautiful view of the zone of

Nahuaterique (border zone with Honduras). We will visit a former guerrilla camp and the “tatús” that during the

war were bunkers used by the guerrillas to protect themselves from aerial bombardment.

Then between the towns of Perquín and Arambala we will visit the famous River Sapo, which is one of the few

non-contaminated water courses in the country, named after its emerald green colour. The river makes its way

through seemingly endless rock formations underneath the leafy vegetation that distinguishes the northern

part of Morazán. Lunch in a restaurant in Perquín.

adventures, this is the appropriate tour. We arrive at the Cerro

Verde Nationall Park . The Cerro Verde is a dormant volcano

located at an altitude of 2.035metres above sea level and with an

area of 500 hectares. The temperature oscillates between the 12º

and 18º C.v At 11:00 a.m. we will begin the walk towards one of

two active volcanos to climb:

Santa Ana volcano or ILamatepec. After two hours walking we

arrive at the very large and beautiful crater. We will have an

impressive view of the Lake of Coatepeque, Izalco volcano, Cerro

Verde volcano and the Pacific Ocean, climatic conditions allowing.

This volcano had its last series of strong eruptions on the 1st of

October 2005, covering the ground for several kilometres around

with ash.

Izalco volcano. After two hours walking, we arrive at the crater of

Izalco volcano. This volcano is one of youngest in the world and was

known as “the Lighthouse of the Pacific” by the early navigators of

the Pacific Ocean. At the bottom of the volcano you can see a town

with the same name, Izalco. During its 200 years of almost constant activity, the volcano threatened to wipe

out this town. Enjoy the impressive view of the Apaneca-Ilamatepec mountain range, the Pacific coast, the city

of Sonsonate and the port of Acajutla.

The diversion continues when descending by a gigantic toboggan of ash towards a dense cloud forest. What

took more than one hour in ascending takes only 10 minutes to descend.

El Impossible Forest Reserve.

Departure from the hotel at 6:30 a.m. This adventure will take

us to the Department of Ahuachapán where El Imposible

National Park is located ( 110 kms to the west of San Salvador).

El Imposible is part of the mountain range of Apaneca -

Ilamatepec. Today we will visit the Mulo viewpoint and will then

descend towards the heart of the park to see the stone carvings

of the Sealed Stone. In the middle of the forest we will bathe in

pools of crystalline water that form in the Venado River.

We will explore the protected natural area with the greatest

bio- diversity that exists in the country and a refuge of species

that are in danger of extinction world-wide. The forest is called

El Imposible, due to its difficult access by means of a winding

passage through the mountains.

It has a greater diversity of tree species than any other forest of

El Salvador. In addition, some species of its fauna are not found

anywhere else in the country. Amongst the fauna present are

eagles, great curassows, pumas, little spotted cats, anteaters

and rattlesnakes.

The walk within the park lasts approximately 5 hours.

Colonial Suchitoto

Departure from the hotel. We will go to the beautiful

city of Suchitoto “Place of birds and flowers” (its name

in Nahuatl language). Suchitoto, a cradle of history and

culture, is a place where it seems that the time has

stopped, where we find an old colonial town with very

clean stone-paved streets, interesting facades and large

houses. The church of Santa Lucia, constructed in 1853,

is one of the main attractions of Suchitoto beacuse of its

original style which is composed of neo-classical and

barroque elements amongst others. As well as these

architectural elements there are also tuscan, doric, ionic

and corinthian elements which mark a departure from

the styles used during the colonial era and the beginning

of a new architectural tendency. The church is one of

the best examples of 19th century architecture in El Salvador.

On the outskirts of the city we will enjoy the great variety of nature including Lake Suchitlán. This impressive

artificial lake has an extension of 135 square kilometres, which makes it the largest lake in El Salvador. We will

take a boat trip to have a closer view of the habitat of different bird species and the nesting sites of migratory

birds coming from North America, such as the Canadian duck. At the end of the tour, we will enjoy a lunch in a

pleasant restaurant with a panoramic view.

Archaeological Maya Route

Departure from the hotel. We will go to Joya de Cerén, the most important archaeological discovery during last

the 50 years in all Latin America, providentially preserved by nature after being buried under the ashes of a

volcanic eruption. It is known as the Pompeii of America and was declared a World heritage site by UNESCO in

1993.

Then we will go to San Andrés, a pre-Columbian ceremonial centre where we will be able to view several semi-

uncovered structures (pyramids) and visit the museum of the site. We continue our tour towards the colonial

city of Santa Ana to visit its historical centre, where we will be able to appreciate the gothic-style cathedral and

the National Palace, constructed at the end of 19th century and where the City Hall of Santa Ana and the

Theatre are currently located.

Then we will have lunch in a pleasant restaurant in the city or on the shores of Lake Coatepeque. Later we will

Panorama of Volcanoes and Mayan Pyramids

Departure from the hotel. For persons who love contact with nature, we offer the Cerro Verde National Park.

The Cerro Verde is a dormant volcano located at an altitude of 2.035 metres above sea level with an area of

500 hectares and is characterised by having a cloud forest. The impressive panoramic views that you can enjoy

from here include the coastal plains, the Izalco volcano and Lake Coatepeque.

The Izalco volcano (altitude of 1,870 mts.) first erupted in 18th century and the continuing eruptions over a

period of 200 years often served as a light to sailors on the Pacific Ocean or when they were coming into the

port of Acajutla to berth.

After this tour, we will go to San Andrés, a pre-Columbian ceremonial centre. San Andrés is one of the largest

pre-Hispanic centres of El Salvador. It is thought that San Andrés exercised control over the valley of Zapotitán

and some neighboring zones, such as the valley of Hamacas where San Salvador is located. Investigations

indicate the existence of an agricultural population from 900 BC to around 420 AC. when the gigantic eruption

of Ilopango volcano caused the abandonment of the region.

Our third destination will be Joya de Cerén, the most important archaeological discovery during last the 50

years in all Latin America, a Mayan village that shows how ordinary Mayan people lived. It is known as the

Pompeii of America and was declared a World heritage site by UNESCO in 1993.
