PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE by Timothy Totten
Fall is upon us and the weather just might be dropping (fingers crossed). This time of year usually brings us a few weddings, like the beautiful ceremony that took place last weekend, and a chance to clean up after the midge flies, AKA blind mosquitoes, that blanket the outside of the white Clifford-Taylor house. Fall also means that several great events are coming up!
We have partnered with the City of Eustis to bring you a wonderful series, the Living Legends of Lake County, which you can read more about in this issue. Our next installment features four teachers who served the county both in segregated minority schools and later as educators in the integrated schools after 1968. These four women, Elsie Broomfield, Joyce Miller McTier, Mamie Rolle and Mayor Gwendolyn Manning have amazing stories to share, so please make sure you join us.
It's also important that you know that our annual Christmas House craft sale has moved! For the past 15+ years, we've held the event at the Eustis Community Center, but this year we have the opportunity for a more visible location at the First United Methodist Church of Eustis. This facility, located near the police station at the point where Grove and Bay Streets split coming into downtown Eustis, has more parking, especially for handicapped patrons, as well as two additional rooms for our use. As always, we will have crafts and artwork from more than 25 area crafters, including all your favorite items. Come check it out starting the week of Thanksgiving.
Our docent program is almost ready to begin giving tours, so if you've like to volunteer and
can read interesting facts off of a 3" x 5" card, you qualify! Call me personally at 352-242-
8111 to find out how to become a docent!
Sincerely,
TIM TOTTEN
President

What Makes a Living Legend? Living Legends are people from the Lake County community who have a
story to tell about their time in the community, one that we don’t want to see lost to time. These folks
have usually been around a long time and have gained the experience and knowledge that goes along with
their story, which makes it so interesting to the rest of us. We are videotaping their stories for future
generations to see, hear and learn from, as well as for all of us to enjoy. They will be kept in the Historical
Museum. If you know someone you would like to nominate as a possible future Living Legend, please
contact us at [email protected], call 352-483-0046 or see Timothy Totten at a museum event.
What are the First Ladies?
Too often, the women in an organization are asked to cook and clean up after everyone else. We wanted to create a group where cooking and cleaning were voluntary. Simply put, we will never require you to cook and
clean to be a part of this group.
In truth, our job is to go around Central Florida visiting important sites to see what wonderful things our area has to offer! We are truly “ambassadors” of the museum and our primary mission is to have fun and promote our own
historical society.
Who Can Join?
Membership in the First Ladies of the Eustis Historical Museum is open to any member of
the Museum.
What Kind of Outings are Planned?
In the past, we have toured historic homes, attended a tea party, watched mermaids at WeekiWachee Springs and visited the zoo.
How Much does it Cost?
Membership is included in your museum membership. Events may have minimal costs involved, such as a small tour fee, depending upon the site. Most trips involve some type of meal, which you may choose to purchase.
How do I Join?
Call the museum at 352-483-0046 or email us
Remember, this is designed to be a fun social group, so all you need to bring is your sense of
humor!

The players with "PCF" on their
jerseys played for Presbyterian
College of Florida, a high school
then located in Eustis on the
northwest corner of Washington
Avenue and Fahnstock Street
from 1905 to 1910. Those with
"Eustis" or "E" probably played
for the Eustis Baseball Club.

"Lake Dicie from the Dixie Highway, Eustis, Fla."
In 1919, when this divided back postcard was
published by Curt Teich, Chicago, Grove Street
was a part of the Dixie Highway. Here's the
possible route that the Dixie Highway took
through Eustis in the 1920s. I'm using today's
street names. if you were on the Dixie Highway,
coming in on the north side of town, you drove
south on Northshore Drive, turned east on Bates
Avenue and then south on Bay Street. You
turned east on Magnolia Avenue and south on
Grove Street. You stayed on Grove until you
came to the Old Mt. Dora Road, where you
turned east and left Eustis. The penny stamp on
the back was canceled in Eustis on March 11,
1920.

Lady Lake Historical Society, Inc. Located at 107 S. Old Dixie Highway, Log Cabin Park, Lady Lake, Florida
By: Robert Arndt, MS, President and Norma J. Delaney, Ed D, Curator
For the past fourteen years, the Old Depot has provided a suitable place for the Lady Lake Historical Society Museum to
preserve the history of Lady Lake. However, the Society members have become aware that some museums are
designing their exhibits in a different way for a more inclusive and balanced view of history. Since we want our museum
to be the best possible, we decided to make some changes.
The Society has planned and implemented a totally new interior design for the museum to create an environment where
visitors can step into the past, learn about the history of Lady Lake and the surrounding region, and feel rewarded for
their time. Volunteers started the first phase of the project by removing everything from the walls and painting. The
displays were designed by topics related to Lady Lake and nearby areas. With a goal to make this a museum the Town
of Lady Lake can be proud of. Society members captured important stories with accurate and engaging content and eye-
catching design!
Beginning September 30th, the museum will be open for regular hours from 10 a.m until 1 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays,
and Saturdays, except for Holidays.
With Our Sincerest Gratitude
A special thank you to Olivia (pictured above) of Olivia's Coffeehouse for donating a wonderful
continental breakfast for the Living Legends Series. If you’ve enjoyed the food at the events, make
sure you stop in at Olivia's and tell her and her awesome staff! Photo by Byron Faudie.
Alice Williams (pictured above between Sheriff’s Griffin and Borders), personal secretary to Sheriff
Noel “Evvie” Griffin, Jr. for many, many years, donated her personal scrapbooks of his years in the
Sheriff’s Department to the Historical Museum. What an amazing treasure! We cannot thank her
enough. Photo by Byron Faudie.
Our favorite photographer, Byron Faudie of PhotoBooth by eSportsPhoto, donates his time to provide
his services at our events at no charge. Thank you, Byron! (Photo above from his business
