The EU has ielded its own peace

operations to various parts o theworld. Operation Artemis to theDemocratic Republic o the Congo inJune 2003 was the irst autonomous

rom Brussels. Since then the EUhas embarked on 24 peacekeepingmissions, including 7 militaryoperations. This is in addition to EU

Member States providing soldiers andpolice to UN Peacekeeping missions.

Peace and Security

In 2008, the EU launched its irst-ever naval mission to prevent piracy o the

Somali coast through Operation Atalanta. Vessels o the World Food Programmeand those involved in UN logistical support to the Arican Union Mission inSomalia beneit rom the EU protection.

Development & Humanitarian Aid

The Worlds Largest Donor

The EU and its Member States are the worlds biggest donors, accounting ornearly 55 % o Oicial Development Assistance. They are also one o the worlds

largest donors o oicial humanitarian aid: EU aid reaches 18 million people inover 100 countries. The EU spends 500 million each year on ood, medicines,uel, medical teams, water treatment experts and logistics sta, almost a third owhich goes to UN humanitarian programmes.

Soaring ood prices in 2007/8 led to the creation o EU Food Facility to makeavailable 1 billion over 2009 to 2011 to improve agricultural productivity and

ood supply in the 50 most aected countries.

Since 2004, over 9 million children were enrolled in primary education and

720,000 primary school teachers were trained with EU support.

EU supported enrolment o around 85,000 emale students in secondary educationin 10 countries o Sub-Saharan Arica in the last 5 years. Almost 4000 emalestudents benefted rom Erasmus Mundus and other student mobility schemes.

5.4 million premature deaths were prevented through the EU-supportedGlobal Alliance or Vaccines and Immunisation. Over 5 million children wereimmunised against measles in the last 5 years.

EU support led to 10.8 million consultations on reproductive heal th and over 4million births attended by health personnel since 2004.

Access to Antiretroviral combination therapy was provided or 750,000 peoplewith advanced HIV. Insecticide-treated mosquito nets were provided to 7.7

million.

Since 2004, over 31 million households were connected to drink ing water and9 million to sanitation acilities through EU programmes worth 400 millionper year.

To promote aid eectiveness, the EU set out 21 measures to be implemented

ahead o the international High Level Forum on Aid Eectiveness in Seoulin 2011. Measures include use o beneiciary countries own systems orchannelling aid and division o labour amongst donors.

Environment

The EU has already made signiicant progress towards its ambitious climate and

energy targets or 2020:

Standard-Setter in Move to Low Carbon Economy

In 2010 the EU mobilised ast start unding o 2.2 billion to support developingcountries eorts to address climate change. This is part o the EUs commitmentto provide 7.2 billion rom 2010 to 2012 to help poor countries as well asdeveloping countries most vulnerable to climate change.

A Leader in Learning and Innovation

Because it is at the oreront o

innovation and research, the EU isan attractive destination or studentsacross the world: 406,500 Asianstudents in 2007, 140% higher than

in 1998. The rate o growth, over thesame period, was 135% or Aricanstudents and 238% or students romSouth America.

One example o Europes path-breaking endeavours in research is the worldslargest and most advanced experimental tokamak nuclear usion reactor beingbuilt at Cadarache, France. As the host, the EU contributes 45% o the cost o

ITER, a joint project with India, China, Japan, South Korea, Russia and USA. Theproject, which aims to show that it is possible to produce commercial energyrom usion, is expected to cost over 10 billion.
