EKS EUROPÄISCHE KONVENTION FÜR STAHLBAU

The European Steel Design Awards are given by ECCS every two years to encourage creative and outstanding use of steel in architecture and construction in Europe. The Awards are open to steel works designed or produced in the ECCS Full Member countries. If the project is multinational, it may be submitted if in accordance with the submission procedure stated on the following pages. Steel construction projects located outside the member country are eligible, if they have been designed or produced by members of the ECCS Full Member (National As-sociation Member / NAM). Both new buildings or bridges, and renovation projects (major retrofit, expansion or rehabilitation) are eligible.

The awards are dedicated to the owner, the general contractor, the architects, the engineers and the steelwork contractors of each project in order to esteem the excellence of their work. The national member is responsible for the submitted project. The building or construction must have been completed and be ready for occupation or use within the last three years, not later than 31st April 2017. Steel construction projects located outside the member country are eligible, if they have been designed or produced in ECCS Full Member (National Association). Both new buildings or bridges, and renovation projects (major retrofit, ex-pansion or rehabilitation) are eligible.

The European Convention for Constructional Steelwork (ECCS) gives every other year the European Steel Design Awards since 1997 in order to encourage the creative and outstanding use of steel in architecture and construction. Outstanding design in steel construction emphasizes the many advantages of steel in construction, production, architecture and sustainability on economy, social and environmental fields.

ECCS has modified the evaluation procedure this year to award the best project with the ECCS Steel Design Award of Excellence and other ten selected projects with the ECCS Steel Design Awards of Merit. This year ECCS Full Member countries have submitted in total 24 projects, some of them submitting up to 3 pro-jects. This brochure highlights each of the winning pro-jects evaluated by National and International Juries, in-cluding the President of the Architect’s Council of Europe.

Oasis of the Light - The Dome of the Louvre Abu Dhabi

AUSTRIA

The city of Abu Dhabi has the ambition to build a museum complex in the spirit of openness and dialogue. Jean Nou-vel has designed a museum which blends into the tradi-tional landscape of the United Arab Emirates. The museum is on the transition from land to sea, the buildings are islands in the water connected by bridges and pontoons. The shallow dome spans 178m and is the cohesive for the archipelago of buildings. The obvious and precise overall shape of the dome shows a complex to-pology of load bearing members in detail.

These members together with the multiple layers of wo-ven outer and inner cladding create a shadow. At the same time seemingly random openings allow rays of light to enter the dome and touch the buildings and the seawa-ter underneath. The ensemble of buildings and the dome create a sanctuary for the valuable art and the visitors.

Bolt Tower in Ostrava, Ostrava

CZECH REPUBLIC

Operation of blast-furnaces in Ostrava Vitkovice was ter-minated in the year 1998 after 80 years of operation. The whole industrial area Down Vitkovice, including 4 blast furnaces, gas holder and other industrial objects was de-clared as National Cultural Monument. Blast-furnace no 1. was transferred to museum of steel production with look-out skyway, glassed in extension situated at the top of the blast-furnace.

Original concept suspending of the top structure to ex-isting steel frame by system of 37 prestressed tendons brought economical and aesthetic effect, which is raised by external hanging walkways of multi angle shape similar to thread of bolt.

The conversed the blast furnace with extension which is a new dominant of the town Ostrava was christened by Usain Bolt 24.5.2015. Weight of steelwork of extension is 130 ton.

DENMARK

To minimize transportation time and transmission loss Waste-to-Energy power plants need to be in the middle of our cities, where the trash is created and the energy is consumed. Since they are driven by economies of scale they are typically giant ugly boxes that cast shadows on their neighbors and block the views. This new waste-to-energy plant dodges the NIMBYists – (Not In My Back Yard) and turns the building into an asset for the local community. Instead of considering Amager Resource Center, ARC, as an isolated object, the architecture intensifies the relationship be-tween the building and the city – expanding the existing activities in the area by turning the roof of the new ARC into a ski slope for the citizens of Copenhagen. There will be 1 continuous ski slope with dif-ferent gradients. This will accommodate skiers with a broad range of experience, from novice to pros. The ski slopes will be open to the public all year around, and there will be a terrain park with hiking trails, climbing wall, viewing platforms, and a café. Access to the top will be through a glass elevator from where visitors will be able to get a glimpse of the machines in the process hall. The building/ski slopes will be at a height on 85 meters, which topped by the chimney will be 125 meters high.

The project Burj Al Arab Terrace is totally unique 10 000 sqm luxury island made of steel and supported by steel piles. Burj Al Arab Ter-race is located at the seaside of the world famous 7star hotel Burj Al Arab in Dubai.

The structure was designed and prefabricated in Finland. The entire prefabricated 4000 ton steel structure was transported in one ship-ping from Finland through Suez Canal to Dubai.

This luxury island comprises fresh water pools, sea water pools, sand beach, restaurant, shops, private cabanas and vip-areas for exclusive hotel guests. The Terrace consists of 6 prefabricated plat-form blocks and 2 prefabricated bridge blocks. All blocks were pre-fabricated at Rauma Shipyard in Finland. The blocks were shipped by heavy lift vessel to Dubai, where they were lifted by 2000 ton floating crane on 90 steel piles with 914 mm diameter each. The pile top level is 3,8 meters above the sea level.

The Matmut ATLANTIQUE is built on the site of Bordeaux-Lac, ideally located at the heart of one of the metropolitan area’s major hubs.Situated at the center of a green area between the floral Park comprised of more than 30 hectares and the Bordeaux forest covering 50 hec-tares, the Matmut Atlantique will integrate perfectly into its surround-ings thanks to its courtyards to the east and west of the building offering a subtle transition between the spaces. The stadium’s installation is nourished by a particular situation: that of an area connected on the one hand to a high quality natural setting to be enhanced to the north and to an urban landscaped framework to be reinforced to the south. The proposition reinterprets the exceptional qualities of this framework and defines a global structure, organizing the various plots through two principal elements:• The stadium’s surroundings: courtyards, parking, ecological corridor. Between the strips of forest, natural thickets act as a theater’s back- stage.• The ground: in the west courtyard, the trees are planted in large bands on a natural lawn itself housed in a dark and sparse soil. The existing north parking will be refurbished.These various types place the stadium within a completely landscaped setting and create an intimate correlation between the stadium’s site and the forested surroundings.

As a result of our master planning, Sartorius, an international pharmaceuticals and laboratory equipment supplier, is merging two locations to form one cam-pus. One key task is the building of a new production facility for precision bal-ances. The design thematises the corporate values of openness, sustainability and enjoyment on 25 000 m2 of floor area. The specification embraced many different aspects: from simple adaptability to constantly evolving production processes, to high demands regarding the creative quality of the design, to DGNB Gold certification.The loadbearing structure for the production building had to be developed so that it would satisfy the requirements to a very high standard, especially the demands of functionality and economy. Procedures for the fine adjustment and calibration of precision instruments are important parts of the produc-tion process. Therefore, the serviceability criteria for the loadbearing structure were defined by high requirements regarding protection against vibrations.Sprinklers are installed throughout the campus to support fire protection measures. A fire resistance of 30 min was specified for the loadbearing struc-ture. The team of architects, structural engineers and building services engi-neers worked out the solution step by step and in close cooperation with the users. Fabrication work had to comply with high standards of dimensional ac-curacy because floor finishes were not planned.

Atrium in Office Complex De Resident, The Hague

NETHERLANDS

The outdoor area between the Helicon and Castalia buildings -the Parnassus square- has been given a roof and is now a communal, semi-public entry atrium for the Ministry of Health, Welfare, and Sport (VWS) and the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment (SZW). Over seventy meters long and twenty meters tall, the atrium impacts the existing architecture as little as possible, while providing an entirely unique experience.

It is constructed from eighteen large steel portals spanning a length of seventy meters, covered by a glass roof. At both ends, the transparent facades feature five-meter tall pivoting doors which also serve as signage elements. Installed at 3.6 m intervals, the 1 m deep composite portal profiles are covered with white steel cladding and stretched fabric. The portals serve as theater flats, creating a unique atmosphere when viewed lengthwise, while still yielding an excellent view of the original building when viewed at an angle.

Kimen Culture Centre, Stjørdal

NORWAY

The bearing elements are made of steel from Skanska’s own steel mill outside Trondheim. Instead of large, heavy steel columns, slender steel pipes are used, which are mounted in clusters around the building. It gives a less massive impression than the heavy columns give.

The slender «beam columns» are customized for this project. They consist of clusters of 2, 3 and 4 slender co-lumns. They provide visual ease and transparency in the room. Where it is open over several planes, the columns are very long and horizontal stiffening plates have been added which give a reduced knot length on the pillars. This makes it possible to have them so slim.

The pillars are fire-painted black. Slope columns stiff off the façade, and these are visibly exposed through the fa-cade tensile metal.

MAAT- Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology, Lisbon

PORTUGAL

MAAT, the new Museum of Art, Architecture and Tech-nology, is an outward-looking museum located on the banks of the river Tagus in Belém, Lisbon. Blending struc-ture into landscape, the kunsthalle is designed to allow visitors to walk over, under and through the building that sits beneath a gently expressed arch.

The main vertical structural elements are composed by variable curvature reinforced concrete walls and cores, which define the various exhibition spaces. All the roof and pavement structures of the main building are made of steel and composite structures.

The main steel structures are the first floor pavement, the “Main Gallery” skylight, the “Oval Gallery” roof with variable free height and plant dimensions, the arch sup-porting the entire south side cantilever of the building, and finally the south façade support structure.

The Odenplan entrance building is a complex steel structure formed to suit a series of curving geometric forms. One of the key themes of the building is to create a focal point where people can meet and enjoy the surroundings of the public square and Gustaf Vasa Kyrka. The result of this is an open and inviting amphitheatre, which provides a place for people to sit comfortably with wide-ranging views.

It is rare that the roof of a station is used for public access and this creates a number of chal-lenges relating to the structural engineering design. The greatest overall challenge was the design of a long-span structure of complex geometric form, which is able to resist loads arising from public access and can meet the recommended requirements for deflection and vibration.

In addition to this, the structure of the canopy interacts with the new station below, the design of which was near complete before the entrance building was designed.

Murat Karamanci Student Center located at Robert College in Istanbul is an educational building that stands up as a good example of “sustainability”, “recyclability” and “re-usage” is aimed to create an multifunctional environment where the younger generation can picture a freer and brighter future.

Robert College, where the site is located in, is one of the oldest American academic institutions outside the US. The school is located on Bosporus where constructions are pro-hibited due to a historical preservation law. The buildings on the school site were built during 1914-1925s and are listed as historical buildings.

Because of these prohibitations, the school council decided to use the tent-covered gym space, namely Bubble built in 2010, as the project site. Therefore, the design was limited to have the same formal appereance and contours with the existing Bubble membrane.
