Introduction
Dear colleagues, friends and continuously learning specialists, interested in Head and Neck Surgery and Oncology,
On behalf of the organizers Michael Fuchs, Felix de Jong, Christian Mozet, I feel pleased to invite you for our Leipzig course in Head and Neck Oncology 2014. Since nearly 8 years we organized courses in Head and Neck Oncology focusing on surgery, function and oncological treatment in larynx and hypopharyngeal cancer. Due to many advices of nearly 420 participants coming from different countries all over the world we decided to change our format for the next year. The new format is open now and will give an interactive update in current opinion and skills in Head and Neck Surgery and Oncology. Four days course of systematic presentation of Head and Neck Onco - logy focusing on current concepts in surgery, radiation oncology and oncology. The program comprehends lectures, workshops, active cadaver prepa rations and life surgery. The course delivers current knowledge about standard procedures and controversies in Head and Neck Oncol- ogy like adjuvant treatment, induction chemo therapy, organ preservation and de-escalation concepts in HPV positive oropharyngeal cancer. Further-more, functional aspects and surgical/phoniatric rehabilitation will be touched. Participants are integrated in active interdisciplinary discussions. Teaching in cadaver resections includes standards in Neck dissection, laryngeal partial resection techniques and surgery and approaches to different sides of head and neck. In principle, the course will deliver concepts and raise awareness of evidence based modern Head and Neck Oncology. The Leipzig courses are well known for the very familiar and warm atmosphere among friends. See you in March 2014 in Leipzig, Andreas Dietz MD PhDFelix I. C. R. S. de Jong MD PhDChristian Mozet MDMichael Fuchs MD PhD

The goal of ISTT is to develop innovative technologies for scenario-based surgical training. This includes the development of simulation systemsand electronic phantoms as well as new training concepts for the wet-lab. All systems and training programs are based on real clinical cases and procedures. Therefore, ISTT is analyzing surgical interventions in close cooperation with clinical partners in Leipzig and worldwide.
Werner Korb (PhD) is the scientific director of ISTT. He has been a resear-cher at the German Cancer Research Center (Heidelberg), the University Hospital in Heidelberg and at the Innovation Center for Computer Assisted Surgery (ICCAS) Leipzig. In Leipzig, he established the research field Ergonomics and Training in Surgery.
Norman Geißler (PhD) is head of the Virtual Mentor Team at ISTT. He is responsible for the training concepts and educational methodology. Previously, he conducted research in ergonomics for surgeons at the Inno-vation Center for Computer Assisted Surgery (ICCAS) and educational psychology at the Universities in Giessen and Potsdam.

Every year some 360,000 people from Germany and abroad entrust their health to Leipzig University Hospital. The hospital’s 3,800 employees – doctors, nursing and administrative personnel – along with staff emplo-yed by external contractors assist patients back to health and well-being. Leipzig University Hospital is distinguished by the highest standards of quality, its human touch, highly qualified employees, state-of-the-art techno-logy and its outstanding cost-effectiveness. With the exception of cardiac surgery, all areas of medicine are represented in its clinics, polyclinics and departments. Providing excellent, high-quality medicine, Leipzig University Hospital is one of the just two maximum care hospitals in Saxony. It enjoys one of the most advanced structural and technical infrastructures in Europe. Minimally invasive surgery, the computer-assisted planning and perfor-mance of operations, unique diagnostic possibilities, the development and application of new types of therapy, and the optimum interdisciplinary networking of the individual specialist disciplines ensure the highest quality of patient care. Given that support from research and development are part of the core tasks of university medicine, Leipzig University Hospital is inseparably linked with the university’s Faculty of Medicine. Intensive re-search is conducted in the various institutes of the hospital and the faculty in the fields of human and dental medicine. The findings are directly put into practice by medical staff.
Particular attention is paid to research into lifestyle diseases (especially their molecular causes), brain disease and cognitive disorders, endocrino-logical diseases, organ replacement and cell therapy. Special mention should be made of the major research projects LIFE (Leipzig Interdiscipli-nary Research Complex into the Molecular Causes of Diseases Associated with the Environment and Lifestyle) and the integrated research and treatment of obesity diseases.
