PRESENTATION OVERVIEW
• An intergovernmental network established in 1985 to promote international, market-oriented research and innovation
• Market oriented: Research results must be a marketable product,
process or service for civilian use • Financed through national and regional public and private funding • Bottom-up: the participants usually led by industry decide on the
project aim. There is no thematic restriction • Support to small and medium-sized enterprises (SME), large industry,
universities and research institutes performing close to end research

How to participate?
National evaluation process
The SA NPC receives an application from (a) SA researcher or (b) other NPCs
The SA NPC lead the consultation with relevant funding parties in SA
NPC organise a meeting with the SA applicant who will deliver a presentation to the DST and other national funding parties where applicable to decide on the national support to
the project
Decision 1: DST support to the project and budget negotiations
(to decide on the exact DST financial support to the project
Decision 2: DST non financial support to the project if there are no
clear RDI outputs
Decision 3: DST not supporting the project if it is not in line with the national objectives
Eureka PAM by the NPC Finalise national funding agreements for
projects that got the Eureka label
Eurostars2 • Component of Eureka
• Aimed at promoting and supporting R&D SMEs participating in transnational research with a strong focus in:
– Job creation
– Economical growth and
– Competiveness
• contributes to the Horizon 2020
• Eurostars2 research projects must be business led with a commercialisation goal of the research output
Eurostars2 cont.... • Projects are led by R&D SMEs, however large
companies, universities and private individuals can also participate.
• The project in this programme have a maximum of three years, and the research output/results must be ready for commercialisation within 2 years of the project completion.
– organised on the basis of an open call
– SA is currently finalising an agreement to be part of Eurostars2

Enterprise Europe Network South Africa EEN Node (EENSA)
• Comprises of Department of Science and Technology as a lead partner.
• Other partners are Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) National Research Foundation (NRF) and Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).
• EENSA currently finalising agreement to be accepted and the EEN node.
ESASTAP Plus
Strengthening Technology, Research and Innovation Cooperation
between Europe and South Africa
ESASTAP background
• ESASTAP is a dedicated platform aimed at:
- promoting S&T cooperation between SA and the EU,
- addressing challenges encountered by SA researchers
• 1st and 2nd phases implemented by DST
- Main focus was raising awareness of FP7 and other EU funding
opportunities amongst the SA research communities
• 3rd phase (ESASTAP Plus)

- Started in November 2012 and ended on 31 October 2015.
• ESASTAP 2020 approved and process at grant agreement stage
Achievements…
• Growth in the ICT and space research in the last few years
(Traditional partner in the health, environment and KBBE
• Increased uptake of the MCA opportunities
• Partner matching activities (portal, NCPs, Brussels office and
SAccess)
• Highlighted the SA-EU research cooperation during the SA-EU
Summits since 2008
• Increase SA participation also in the EDCTP and COST
programmes
ESASTAP plus objectives
• Enrich the science, technology and innovation policy dialogue;
• Promote strategic cooperation under the main instruments, chiefly
the Framework Programme;
• Better coordinate and exploit synergy between different EU and
national programmes; and
• Expand cooperation to specifically address innovation partnerships.

• Advisory and support mechanisms (National Contact Point,
DST office in Brussels)
• NCPs (call analysis)
• Financial support - Seed and co-investment
• Partner-matching service (DST, ESASTAP, NCPs and
