A message from Mr Leary…
We have reached the halfway stage of the term and
everyone has been extremely busy over the past three
weeks. The students have been engaged in meaningful,
stimulating and challenging learning activities that both
support and extend their individual needs. Every day we
ensure each student’s needs are met through
adjustments to the curriculum and the learning
environment. We make a concerted effort to ensure that
each student’s learning is a priority and that they feel
valued and safe at school.
This week we have had contractors pruning the large
pine trees in the playground. These works were
scheduled as a result of the mandatory tree audit carried
out last year. A significant amount of dead wood was
removed and they are now a safe and shady playground
feature. Next week we will have more pruning carried
out on the peppercorn trees along the front fence. This
will tidy up the front of the school and make it more
visible from the road.
Our PE and sport sessions have been focused on
preparations for the upcoming Baldry Shield to be held
at Wallendbeen on Friday 29 March. Whilst not a
competitive carnival, students will be given
opportunities to participate in a variety of athletics
based activities as well as the traditional march past. Our
entries for this event have been submitted and a note
will come home next week.
The Life Education Van and
Harold the giraffe will visit us
on Friday 22 March. Notes
have been sent home outlining
the lessons to be covered by
each of the classes. These
lessons directly support the
content presented in our PD/Health lessons throughout
the year.
Next Thursday I will attend the inaugural Gundagai
Small School’s Principal network meeting in Tumut. This
will become a regular event, allowing Principals time to
collaborate and share ideas to further enhance the
quality education delivered in small schools. One of the
main focuses will be assessment and tracking of student
learning data to enable teachers to develop explicit and
personalize learning programs for each student. The
meeting will be coordinated by our Director Mr Russell
Graham and involve schools from Tumut, Gundagai and
Junee areas.
Last Friday a number of students attended the
Cootamundra Zone swimming carnival in Cootamundra.
The competition on the day was of a high standard with
the judges and officials being very strict on techniques.
This led to a number of disqualifications on the day in
the form strokes. Our students had a great day with a
number of them placing in events. Our relay team
qualified to attend the Riverina carnival next
Wednesday 13 May in Albury. Ellouise, Callum, Lydia
and Jesse are our 4 fastest freestyle swimmers and they
will do our school proud. However, Jesse’s participation
is in doubt due to an arm fracture sustained during a
weekend activity. If he is unable to swim, Rasmus will
join the team.
Over the past fortnight, our students have had intensive
swimming instruction with Noel and Edna. Our program
concluded today and the students have increased their
swimming abilities and water safety skills. Almost 95%
of our students reached their freestyle benchmarks. We
are very fortunate to have instructors that are extremely
patient and very supportive of each student.

Our students recently submitted entries in the Broadway
Museum colouring competition. Five of our students
paled either 1st or 2nd in their different categories. Gift
vouchers from Junee Newsagency (1st = $30 and 2nd =
$15) were on offer for the students. Congratulations to
the following students who have won prizes: Mahli (1st),
Scarlett (2nd), Elsa (1st), Lydia (1st) and Rasmus (2nd).

Next Tuesday we commence our Sporting Schools
cricket program. This activity will focus on developing
specific fundamental movement skills that are utilised,
not only in cricket, but in a variety of sports our students
participate in. The program will run for four weeks and
all students will receive some free equipment when it
concludes.
Junee High School are running special interest groups
where students can select a variety of different activities
to participate in, outside the ‘regular’ curriculum. One of
these is to work with students in Ngumba-Dal and other
‘feeder’ primary schools. JHS students will join us in
Weeks 7, 9 and 11 to work with students and support
them during our learning activities. We look forward to
welcoming them to EPS on Wednesday.
At EPS, we are proud of our high attendance rate. But
what if my child has to be away from school? On
occasion, your child may need to be absent from school.
Justified reasons for student absences may include:
•being sick, or having an infectious disease
•having an unavoidable medical appointment
•being required to attend a recognised religious holiday
•exceptional or urgent family circumstance (e.g.
attending a funeral)
Following an absence
from school parents
must ensure that within
7 days you provide the
school with a verbal or
written explanation for
the absence. This can
be done using the
absence notes sent
home with the last
newsletter or by using
the Skoolbag App.

Around the Classrooms
The students have been engaged and highly productive
in class, around the school and in the community. Here
is a summary of what has been happening in Miss
Breen’s and Mr Leary’s classrooms.
It has been a busy first 6 weeks in the K-2 classroom and
students have settled well into class routines and
expectations.
In Literacy, Kindergarten have begun their phonics and
sight word program, which has allowed them to begin
reading books during guided reading. Later this term,
Eurongilly Public School
Educating, Enriching and Empowering Students Page 5
they will be able to use their knowledge of sight words
and sounds to begin writing sentences.
Year 1 and Year 2 have continued with their sight words
and spelling programs. Recounts are our main focus this
term during writing
where we are beginning
to self-edit our work.
In Numeracy, we have
covered topics about
numbers and have been
busy counting, reading,
writing, making and
ordering numbers.
Kindergarten have begun
to learn about length and
Year 1 and 2 are
practising their addition
strategies.
In Geography, Kindergarten are looking at special places
and how we care for them. Year 1 and 2 are covering the
topic of natural, man-made and managed sites and how
we use and care for these places. In Science, students
are learning about sound and sound waves.
-----------------------------------
This term we are focusing on
specific reading and writing skills
in a unit that integrates science themes, specifically
world biomes. Students are concentrating on
summarising key facts and ideas as well as writing
specific sentence types. They are incorporating noun
groups, technical vocabulary, more complex
punctuation and effective proofreading and editing. We
have been using Google Classroom to complete and
submit learning tasks online. The students are enjoying
experimenting with ICT to present their learning across
a variety of different applications.
Sienna’s ‘Rainforest’ introduction
In Mathematics there has been a concerted efforts by all
students to consolidate number facts. The students
were challenged to reflect upon themselves and identify
different personal traits, such as their age and shoe size,
through the use of different number strategies. We have
been representing data on column graphs and will move
onto line and sector graphs next week. Our artworks
have focused on animals from different habitats around
the world. All students are looking forward to creating
their ‘biome dioramas’ in the coming weeks.
Grace and Ellouise used a variety of strategies to
help others to “Figure Me Out”
Thanks the Cheryl for organizing the lilies for our
latest rock garden near our new shed. Miss Breen
was busy mulching it today. It will add another
splash of colour to our beautiful school playground
