In Euro 6, NOx levels are just a fifth compared
to Euro 5.
Euro 6 came into force for new models on
31 December 2012 and for existing models
one year later. In addition to earlier legislation,
the Euro 6 directive requires the particles to be
counted and the test procedure is the first step
towards a harmonised world standard.

The legend of truck engines is reborn as Euro 6. Cleaner than ever, without sacrificing
anything of the signature Scania V8 power and fuel efficiency, it leads the way towards
more sustainable road transport. Being the only 16-litre V8 engine in the world able to
meet the Euro 6 requirements, it combines SCR with our newly developed water-cooled
EGR system in order to reduce emissions. Available in 580 hp and 520 hp versions,
the Scania Euro 6 V8 is the premium choice for non-compromising professionals.

Less fuel and more power. The second generation of Scania Euro 6 engines delivers
outstanding driveability and operating economy based on refined technology and
further enhanced performance. Two new engines, 450 hp and 490 hp, replace the
renowned 440 hp and 480 hp versions that initially set the Euro 6 standard when
introduced in 2011. Both the 450 hp and 490 hp come with EGR and SCR, while
our third new inline six, the 410 hp, uses only SCR technology. Reducing fuel
consumption by up to 2% compared to their predecessors, these new engines are
right for any application – from flexible all-rounders to expert specialist vehicles.

Four Euro 6 diesel and two gas engines, ranging from 250 to 360 hp, make up the agile
and lightweight 5-cylinder Euro 6 line-up. The two most powerful diesel versions come
as SCR only, and the ones with lower power with EGR and SCR technology. All of our
models, diesel as well as gas, deliver legendary Scania power and torque, enabling
effortless driving and quick response. These highly useful characteristics, in com bina-
tion with industry-leading fuel efficiency, make these smaller Scania powerhouses
highly suitable for cost-effective goods distribution and construction applications.

Agile, compact and light. The Scania 5-cylinder engine range saves space and weight
without sacrificing performance. You can choose from five different alternative fuels
depending of your operation: diesel, biodiesel, ethanol and natural gas or biogas.
Broadest on the market, this gives you an unsurpassed choice of fuels and the
opportunity to meet even the hardest demands on a minimised CO2 footprint.
And although smaller, these technical masterpieces deliver the same advantages as
their six- and eight-cylinder siblings. High power and torque output, strong fuel economy
and maximised uptime. Matched to the right transmission, such as Scania Opticruise,
available fully automated or with a clutch pedal, they will be the perfect choice when
precision manoeuvring, easy driving and quick response make all the difference.

scania EnginE tEChnologY 18-19
Scania takes pride in its strong in-house tradition in research and development.
Over the years, we have pioneered a long line of new technologies, making it easy
for our customers to find the right match for every need.
A Scania engine has always been characterised by its robustness, fuel economy
and high torque-to-power ratio. Another typical Scania feature is utter reliability,
the result of extensive laboratory and field testing, where every engine is pushed
to its limits – and beyond – before it is released.
When it comes to exhaust aftertreatment, Scania has extensive experience of working
with both EGR and SCR technologies. This is why you find engine options with similar
output levels featuring pure EGR, pure SCR and a combination of both in our line-up.
technology leads the way.
scania EnginE tEChnologY 18-19
scania EgrExhaust gas recirculation (EGR) reduces emissions during combustion, directly in
the combustion chamber. Just add diesel, and nothing more. Scania EGR lowers
nitrogen oxide emissions by cooling and reusing a portion of the exhaust gases.
Scania EGR also cuts weight and leaves space on the chassis for larger fuel
tanks. Whether on the open road, on the construction site or in the city, Scania
EGR effectively reduces emissions in all conditions.
scania sCrSelective catalytic reduction (SCR) with a urea-based additive, AdBlue, ensures
that exhaust gases are released with minimal nitrogen oxide content. When
AdBlue is injected into the exhaust, a reaction takes place in a catalytic converter,
which is integrated in the silencer.
scania EnginE tEChnologY 20-21
scania engine managementTo secure control of all aspects of engine performance, as well as the exhaust
aftertreatment system for Euro 6, Scania has developed a new generation of
engine management systems. All functions are controlled by the engine manage-
ment system, which also provides advanced on-board diagnostics and allows
detailed logging of operational data for subsequent analysis.
scania VgtThe geometry and gas flow in the Scania VGT (variable-geometry turbocharger)
is regulated by an electric actuator. This allows precise control of both charge-air
to the engine, to boost low-speed engine power, and the flow of recirculated
exhaust gases on EGR engines. The intake airflow can be optimised throughout
the rev range. This means that the VGT helps to improve engine response and
low-speed torque by maintaining the turbine speed while the gearchanges are
being made.
scania pdE and XpiBoth the Scania PDE and Scania XPI (extra high pressure injection) fuel injection
systems make continuous, precise adjustments to ensure opti mal fuel delivery in
all conditions. Both are able to vary the volume and timing of injection, thereby
minimising consumption and emissions without restricting torque build-up. With
Scania XPI, pressure can be set independently of engine speed, with exceptional
precision.
scania modular combustion conceptThe potential for engine optimisation – excellent fuel economy, low emissions
and generous torque – is at its greatest when the physical dimensions of the bore
and stroke are within certain critical limits. This has led to the development of the
Scania modular combustion concept. All Scania engines have identical combustion
chambers and also share components such as pushrods, valve gear, roller tappets
and piston rings. This makes them both efficient and exceedingly simple to
maintain and repair. Scania’s modular product system also facilitates parts
supply, which serves to maximise uptime.
scania EnginE tEChnologY 20-21
gas engineScania’s 9.3-litre gas engines work according to the Otto principle with spark
ignition and lambda control. The electronic ignition control and gas supply result
in very low emissions, including noise.
Ethanol engineThe current ethanol engine is the third generation of Scania diesel-ethanol
engines. It is an adaptation of Scania’s 9-litre diesel engine with charge
cooling and exhaust gas recir culation (EGR). The engine uses compres sion
ignition just as a diesel engine with virtually the same fuel effi ciency.
scania particulate filterA particulate filter is used in Euro 6 exhaust systems. It reduces particles and soot,
hydrocarbons and carbon mon oxides in the exhaust gases. The latest generation of
filters, integrated in the Scania Euro 6 exhaust aftertreatment system, is designed
to regenerate continuously while driving. A forced regeneration can be activated
by the driver at standstill.
oxicatThe oxidising catalyst is part of the Euro 6 aftertreatment system. It prepares the
exhaust gases for subsequent stages in the exhaust flow by balancing NO and
NO2 levels. It uses a catalytic process without any additives and is fully integrated
in the compact Euro 6 silencer unit.
scania transmission options 22-23
Scania transmissions offer full command over any powertrain. With easy handling and
precise gear control they provide maximum performance and operating economy,
making every drive as relaxing as it is productive.
Scania Opticruise, Scania Retarder and many other options mean that you can opt
for a fully integrated powertrain, perfectly matched to your operation.
maximum efficiency. minimum effort.
8 (8+1) speed gearboxesThe virtue of this range-change gearbox lies in its simplicity. Based on a 4-speed
main gearbox, plus a planetary section, it is rugged and compact. The smooth,
positive action makes gearchanging easy for the driver. It is the natural choice
for distribution driving and is available with Scania Opticruise automated gear-
changing. The 8+1 speed gearbox, with an extra crawler ratio, is more than
a match for the high-torque outputs of all but the most powerful Scania inline
engines and the perfect choice for construction as well as some long-haulage
operations. Several types of power take-off can be specified.
12 (12+2) speed gearboxesThese range-splitter gearboxes are built to tackle the most challenging terrain,
making them the perfect choice for demanding long-haulage or construction
applications. The closely stepped ratios combine ease of driving with exceptional
operating economy. For applications that demand additional low-speed pulling
power, the 12+2 speed gearbox has two extra crawler ratios. The overdrive
versions offer higher torque capacity in addition to overdrive for low and
economic cruising revs. Scania Opticruise and Scania Retarder, as well as
a selection of power take-offs are available for all range-splitter gearboxes.
scania transmission options 22-23
performance modesThe performance modes are part of Scania
Opticruise. They allow you to adapt the vehicle’s
performance to match particular operational
demands. Depending on truck type, up to three
performance modes can be specified per vehicle.
Switching mode is easily done while driving and
the chosen mode is visible in the central display.
If required, all settings can be altered or fine-
tuned by a Scania service workshop. There are
totally four performance modes:
• Standard mode. Provides optimal balance
between fuel economy and hill performance.
• Economy mode. Tuned to minimise fuel
consumption and thus contribute to lower
fuel costs.
• Power mode. Prioritises engine response
and uphill performance in order to optimise
transport time.
• Off-road mode. Enables efficient and
eco nomical driving in rough terrain and
on surfaces with high rolling resistance.
scania opticruiseScania Opticruise, one of the first automated gearchanging systems on the
market, has been refined in many steps over the years, and is now one of the
smoothest and smartest systems on the market.
The concept of a standard mechanical gear box remains, but the system
has been extensively revised with improved mechanical components and new
software. You are offered the unique possibility of choosing between a fully
automated version with an automatic clutch and a classic version with a clutch
pedal. Both offer supreme control, fuel economy and driveability in every situation.

scania driver supportScania Driver Support is a system that continuously gives the driver
individual hints and feedback on the driving with safety and fuel
economy as key parameters. It works in real time during driving and
delivers a summary after a completed assignment. The system is
designed to work in line with the Scania Driver Training programme
in order to maintain a consistently fuel-efficient driving style.
scania EcocruiseScania Ecocruise is an optional cruise control that knows the tricks
of economy driving, saving up to 3% fuel with Scania Opticruise
and Economy mode. Scania Ecocruise is a suitable fuel-saving
option for routes that are not covered by the topographical data
used by Scania Active Prediction. Driver intervention is possible at
any time, e.g. via the accelerator or by changing gears manually.
Scania Ecocruise is available in combination with Scania Opticruise.
The vehicle should also be specified with the Scania Retarder to
take advantage of the downhill momentum feature.
scania active predictionScania Active Prediction is a unique advanced cruise control system that uses
GPS to predict the topography of the road ahead. This enables any driver to
achieve a perfectly optimised cruising speed – even on roads never seen before,
or in pitch black darkness. By adjusting speed before an ascent or descent,
the system contributes to reduce fuel consumption. With Scania Opticruise
and Economy mode, up to 5% of fuel can be saved.
Scania Active Prediction works seamlessly together with Scania Opticruise
and Scania Adaptive Cruise control.
scania transmission options 24-25
automatic gearboxesThe Scania Opticruise automated gearchanging system handles many applica-
tions that used to require an automatic transmission. Some vehicles operating
in stop-and-go applications with potentially high clutch wear can still benefit
from a fully automatic transmission. These Scania-specified Allison units reduce
snatches and shocks, making them well suited for frequent stopping, starting
and rapid acceleration. Any Scania engine up to 490 hp can be fitted with an
automatic transmission. Options include an integrated retarder and a selection
of power take-offs.
rear axle gearsA wide range of Scania axles and axle gears offers minimal frictional losses for
any type of application. Of course, exceptional strength and reduced weight are
features common to all Scania axles. Lightest of all is a single axle with single
reduction for vehicles with 9-litre engines, 230 to 360 hp. At the opposite end
is a hub reduction bogie, with a design capacity far in excess of 150 tonnes, for
vehicles engaged in the most demanding heavy-haulage operations. Between
these extremes, there are axles to suit every need.
scania retarderThe Scania Retarder interacts with the cruise control, exhaust brake and wheel
brakes to provide total downhill speed control at the touch of a button or a dab
on the brake pedal. With cruise control and the Scania Retarder you get automatic
speed control up and down the hills. Retarder braking is either initiated with a dab
on the brake pedal, steering wheel buttons or controlled manually with the lever
on the steering column. When set to work automatically with the exhaust brake
and the service brakes, service brake applications are reduced by up to 75% and
brake wear is minimised.
power take-offsScania power take-offs are available for a wide array of applications.
