Dear Friends,

This morning as I was having devotions, I read a prayer by John Wesley that summarizes what I hope for us all for the month of October:

“O Lamb of God, who both by Your example and Your precept You instructed us to be [proper/fit] and humble, give me grace throughout my whole life, in every thought, word,

and work, to imitate Your meekness and humility. [Destroy] in me the whole body of

Pride. Amen. “ (John Wesley, 1703-1791)

We have a rich history in the United Methodist tradition, a tradition that includes the influence of John Wesley, the prolific biblical preacher and teacher and his brother Charles, the phenomenal hymn writer, from whom we get many of the richest expressions of our Faith in song, like “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” and “Christ the Lord is Risen Today.” This month you will have the opportunity to learn more of the depth of that spiritual history. Beginning Wednesday, October 9

th, I will be starting a 6-week class called, A Disciple’s Path: Deepening Your Relationship With Christ and the Church. The first week will be an Introductory Session. Anyone interested in growing in their relationship with Christ and the Church is invited to attend. A light dinner will be provided, which will be put out buffet style in Wesley Hall at 5:45 pm. Just come in, fill a plate and take a seat at one of the round tables. The class will begin promptly at 6:00 pm. We will finish up at 7:00 pm and be dismissed no later than 7:10 pm, so those in the Choir can head upstairs. Please sign up on the Welcome Center or call the Church Office if you would like to attend.

Each person will receive a “Daily Workbook” and “Companion Reader” to work with between classes.

The objectives of this time of study will be as follows: 1. Learn the discipleship pathway and how to grow your faith in this congregation. 2. Experience the daily rhythm of reading scripture and journaling. 3. Discover your spiritual gifts. 4. Identify a group or class that meets your next step along the discipleship journey. 5. Meet with someone to find your place to serve in ministry. 6. Make an informed decision about your next step on the discipleship pathway.

We will have a simple covenant with one another:

1. Be on time. 2. Complete the readings and activities for the week. 3. Contact us if you are unable to attend class. The last class will be the Wednesday before the week of Thanksgiving. What a great way to prepare for Giving Thanks and moving

into the Advent Season – strengthening our relationship with Christ in an intentional way. As we grow together in grace through Faith, Robin

October 6 & 13 – Thanksgiving Dinner - Funds from this Joyful Noise will be used to purchase turkeys and all the trimmings for our annual free Community Thanksgiving Dinner. Ken Edwards and his crew of volunteers prepare a complete dinner each year for those in need as well as those who may have no where else to go on Thanksgiving Day. What a wonderful outreach program for residents in our community October 20 & 27 - The Supplemental Food Resource Center (SFRC) is our church's food pantry which is open every other Saturday to those in need of food and a listening ear. Our economy has not seen a huge turn around so there are many families that have been down on their luck for many reasons. Effort United Methodist Church's food pantry is an interim source of food until clients are able to get assistance from other resources. Monies from this Joyful Noise will help purchase staples and turkeys for the Thanksgiving Baskets we give to the families each year.

THE GARDEN OF GIVING

You don’t even have to be quiet because this place NEVER sleeps!

(Located off route 715, 4 miles from WAWA in McMichaels Hillside Terrace on the right Hillside drive)

Once again The Garden of Giving has been busy! On August 31st The Garden of Giving, along with other partnering

organizations of the United Way of Monroe County, had a great day at the Stroudsfest showcasing the many charities, their missions

and needs. September 12th brought 15 volunteers from ESU to the Garden with the United Way’s Day of Caring doing various jobs

and projects.

The Garden is very grateful to all of the volunteers and supporters, as we work to get nutritious food to our neighbors in need.

On October 19th there will be both garlic planting and tours of the farm. Everyone is welcome to come see the Garden

and/or help plant the garlic to be harvested next year. Garlic is loaded with healthy antioxidants and compounds that can help

ward off colds, pimples, mosquitoes, and maybe even those extra pounds! (See

http://www.rd.com/slideshows/13-surprising-benefits-of-garlic/ for even more on the benefits of garlic).

The Garden of Giving is always in need of volunteers to help in the office, serve on the board, and help in the Garden,

including team leaders, as well as donations of supplies and funding to purchase what is needed for the Garden and chickens. The

Garden of Giving is an excellent opportunity for youth and scouting groups to learn about gardening, science, health, nutrition, and

many other valuable life skills and lessons on a weekly, biweekly or monthly basis.

For more information call 570.402.1282 or email [email protected]. We look forward to seeing you at the

upcoming event

We are pleased to announce the Effort United Methodist Church will be hosting its 5th Community

Thanksgiving Day Dinner on Thursday, November 28th at 2pm. We will be offering a full dinner with all the trimmings. What a joyous day it will be….family and friends sharing a heart felt meal for the holidays. How blessed we are: Thanksgiving Day is just around the corner. We are reminded on this day to be thankful for the life we have.

With that being said, for the past couple of years our church family has shown how thankful we are for what we have by sharing our Thanksgiving with the West End Community. We started a Thanksgiving tradition to invite all of those who do not have family to be with, or who, because of their circumstances, cannot prepare a Thanksgiving Dinner, to come and break bread with our church family.

We are happy to let you know that previous years dinners have been a great time of fellowship and reflection on what it means to be thankful for all that God has given us. Sometimes what he has given us is invisible on the surface but if we open our hearts and our minds we can see the great things he has given us all.

Please come join us and invite anyone you know who would otherwise dine alone or be unable to be able to prepare their own meal.

All of our food donations are taken care of EXCEPT TURKEYS. Please consider giving your supermarket’s free turkey to this ministry, or a monetary donation. Also, volunteers are needed to extend God’s love by joining our guests as they enjoy their dinner. If you have any questions please feel free to call the church at 570-629-1890

Take a moment and send a note, to offer love, support and hope,

So they will know they’re in our prayers and that, of course, we care.

It will bring JOY onto their day to know, that we, for them do pray,

In peace and rest they’ll be embraced as we hold them in God’s grace.

A little note…. a text …. a call…. A grateful heart receives them all! (Romans 12:15 “Rejoice with those who rejoice, mourn with those who mourn) A SPECIAL NOTE OF GRATEFUL THANKS….While I have this opportunity, I would like to thank all those families that prepared food for us during my recuperation from knee replacement surgery. Dave and I are so blessed by all of your presence in our lives. Thank-you and God bless you..

Supporting each other in times of Joy and Sorrow is EXACTLY the kind of LOVE God wants us to show!

Please keep the following in your prayers as they are in care homes, nursing homes or rehabilitation centers. You can send cards, letters or even pay them a visit if the Lord leads you to do so. They would love to hear from us or see us all!

If I added up the names on the birthday lists for the year, (and I actually did…) we appear to have around 1200 members at EUMC! So, where is everyone!! I am sure there are many on the birthday lists that are no longer attending our church because they have moved away, grown and gone, are going to another church, or maybe even have passed away. We are asking that you please call the office and let us know who we can take off the lists. I removed both my sons because they have grown and are out on their own. They no longer attend here and do not need their name on the list. Please help us get these lists accurate and under control! All these little updates save paper, ink and time. Thank you! ☺

A touch of frost upon the ground in the early morning hours,

the abundant acorns scattered round and the bowing heads of flowers. The growing chill within the breeze and the shortening of days, the flocks of birds all headed south, the Golden Rods’ display.

The splendor of the colored leaves are glorious to our sight, a tapestry of wonder, given to our hearts delight.

The valleys low now resting at the feet of mountains high, and all are ‘neath the canopy of endless azure sky.

The fields abound with pumpkins round and apple bushels fill, the sky at night bears stars so bright, Gods heaven us to thrill.

Let’s revel in this beautiful and wondrous time of fall, And give the glory back to God, the creator of it all!

Spicy Pumpkin Soup Recipe

INGREDIENTS

• 4 Tbsp unsalted butter

• 2 medium yellow onions, chopped

• 2 teaspoons minced garlic

• 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper

• 2 teaspoons curry powder

• 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander

• Pinch ground cayenne pepper (optional)

• 3 (15 oz) cans 100 percent pumpkin or 6 cups of chopped roasted pumpkin*

• 5 cups of chicken broth (or vegetable broth for vegetarian option)**

• 2 cups of milk

• 1/2 cup brown sugar

• 1/2 cup heavy cream

METHOD

1 Melt butter in a 4-quart saucepan over medium-high heat. Add onions and garlic and cook, stirring often, until softened, about 4

minutes. Add spices and stir for a minute more.

2 Add pumpkin and 5 cups of chicken broth; blend well. Bring to a boil and reduce heat, simmer for 10 to 15 minutes.

3 Transfer soup, in batches, to a blender or food processor. Cover tightly and blend until smooth. Return soup to saucepan.

4 With the soup on low heat, add brown sugar and mix. Slowly add milk while stirring to incorporate. Add cream. Adjust seasonings

to taste. If a little too spicy, add more cream to cool it down. You might want to add a teaspoon of salt.

Serve in individual bowls. Sprinkle the top of each with toasted pumpkin seeds. Makes 8 servings YUM!

ST NICK PROJECT 2013ST NICK PROJECT 2013ST NICK PROJECT 2013ST NICK PROJECT 2013: Yupp! .. it’s that time of year, again, and plans are in the works for our faith community’s St Nick Project 2013! The goal of the St Nick Project is to provide Christmas gifts to local families whose current circumstances would otherwise keep them from enjoying this traditional part of the Christmas holidays, that so many of us take for granted.

This ministry is carried out by our church’s Mission Team and is lead by Linda Ernst, assisted by her husband, Don . The number of families benefitting from the project continues to grow each year, and averages 27-32 families each Christmas. Once again this year, it is anticipated that there will be a another increase in the number of families who will seek assistance. If you would care to support this special ministry, you can do so in one of several ways.

ADOPT A FAMILY:ADOPT A FAMILY:ADOPT A FAMILY:ADOPT A FAMILY: To adopt and provide gifts for a specific family, simply contact Linda. You will be allowed to select the size of family you wish to adopt, and you will be matched, in total confidentiality, and only by code number, with a family in need. Linda will provide you with information about the family, to help you with your shopping, including family member ages, clothing sizes, most liked colors and even gift preferences, so that you can buy gifts for them, much like you do for your own family. You then deliver your gifts to the church in a bag, marked only with the code number that you were provided. The recipients are then notified to come and pick up their gifts in time for Christmas giving!

CASH DONATIONS:CASH DONATIONS:CASH DONATIONS:CASH DONATIONS: Cash donations are very much needed, and all donations will be used to purchase gifts for those families that have not been adopted by our members.

RECOMMEND A FAMILY TO BE HELPEDRECOMMEND A FAMILY TO BE HELPEDRECOMMEND A FAMILY TO BE HELPEDRECOMMEND A FAMILY TO BE HELPED: If you know of a family who might benefit from the St Nick Project, you are encouraged to supply Linda Ernst or the church staff with the family’s contact information. (Note: All potential recipient families are first contacted to ask if they wish to participate in the St Nick Project.)

And don’t forget what has become a popular tradition, here at EUMC, our annual Community Christmas Dinner and Carol Sing, will be held on Saturday, December 7th at 6:00P.M.

For further information on the St Nick Project, please contact Linda Ernst at (570) 460-4415, or Jan in the church office, at (570) 629-1890. God’s Blessings Be With You!

On Saturday, November 9th the choirs at Effort UMC and St. Matthews UCC in Kunkletown have the opportunity to participate in a very

exciting community choral concert called Project One Step at Stroudsburg High School. The event will raise money to benefit the local food pantries of Monroe County. The concert will be under the direction of composer and conductor Pepper Choplin. The name Project One Step is based on his anthem "One Step He Leads".

Our choir is asking for your support by sponsoring choir members to participate. By sponsoring a choir member you will help to cover the cost of buying the music and providing necessary rehearsal materials needed to prepare for the concert. The choir works on a very limited budget which makes it necessary for us to get creative when it comes to additional expenses throughout the choir season. I think it important to point out that your

financial support will be a valuable investment because it will be increased multiple times when compared to what is ultimately raised by the concert. If we have more sponsors than needed the additional support will go toward this year's Christmas cantata which will be held on December 20th and 21st. Thank you in advance for your support of all the music ministries we have at church. The constant support I personally receive from the church community has made it possible for me to take on new challenges, such as participating in this concert, and in the vision and goals I have in advancing and growing the music ministry. I look forward, with God's help and guidance, to a very exciting future. Dan Smale
