PENTECOST SUNDAY LETTER FROM THE PASTOR PAGE THREE

Queridos Amigos,

P. Tony Diaz, CMF Parroco

Dear Friends,

What is that “thing” that holds bricks together: mortar, cement? What is that “thing” that makes relationship pos-sible: love, friendship? What is that “thing” that is the life force in everything that lives: spirit? What is that energy and experience that is able to move you in directions you never thought possible: spirit? What is that “thing” that is able to push you beyond the limits that you or life has set for you: spirit? This is the same Spirit that is the fruit of the relationship between God and Jesus; and this is the same Spirit that was given to the church at Pentecost. The Spirit was given to the early church to reconcile others to God; to build the Kingdom of God, of which the church is an instrument and sacrament. One of the main actions of the building of the Kingdom is reconciliation. By recon-ciliation we are not talking about the sacrament, but rather the compassion in and through which we become instru-ments of reconciliation. In contrast to the story of tower of Babel where the ar-rogance of humanity led to division because of the multi-plicity of languages, here in the midst of multiplicity of languages and cultures the Spirit was bringing unity. This is something that ought to inspire us here at San Gabriel Mission. We are a community of great diversity in lan-guages and cultures. Can we have unity in the midst of the diversity that we have here at San Gabriel Mission? Can this be possible? It can be possible when we make our faith, God, Jesus and the Spirit our common ground from which we enter into relationship and dialogue. It is a con-stant challenge for us to enter into relationship and dia-logue from what brings us together as a community of faith, rather than what differentiates us from others in lan-guage and culture. The one command that the risen Lord gives to his disci-ples in the gospel of John after he breaths the Spirit on them is to reconcile others to God. This can only be done by entering into relationship and this is possible only when we get to know others at the personal level. It is very hard to reconcile with others or be an instrument of reconcilia-tion if there is no trust in the relationship. That trust can come only through honest dialogue and the risk of sharing our vulnerability. This is what Jesus models for us in his own life. Come, Holy Spirit, come! And from your celes-tial home shed a ray of light divine! Come, Father of the poor! Come, source of all our store! Come, within our bos-oms shine.

Fr. Tony Diaz, CMF Pastor

FAITH FORMATION CORNER – THOUGHTS TO PONDER, WAYS TO LIVE

“Jesus lives in the community – He only visits the church.”

One of my grad school friends is a Franciscan sister who teaches high school and writes a blog called “Messy Jesus Business.” I always thought that was a funny, and very accurate, title – being about Jesus’ business is messy. But not only is Jesus’ business messy, but even God’s gifts to us, like grace, can be messy. It is easier for many people of faith to live by rules rather than by grace. Rules are easier to deal with than grace. That’s why we keep making up rules even when we can’t keep the ones we already have. Judah Smith writes, “Rules are tidy. Grace is messy, unpredictable, unquantifiable. I can hold my life up against a set of rules and easily determine if I’m a good person. I can do the same with your life, and I can do it from a distance, without having to mess with relationship and compassion and the gritti-ness of real life. Not so with grace. Grace risks its reputation to eat with notorious sinners. It sacrifices its schedule to help hurting people. Grace doesn’t allow us the luxury of aloofness. It doesn’t get so distracted with doing things that it forgets about people. If you choose to live by grace and not by rules, you are in for some messy moments. But once you’ve embraced grace, you’ll never let go.” This is an important reminder for us as Catholics, because we believe that every time we receive a sacrament a moment, a gift, of grace occurs. Today in our parish, 30+ adults are receiving their confirmation, a moment of grace. The rest of us attending church, if we received reconciliation or communion, we have received grace. And what are we doing with our “grace?” How are we living our faith? Are we only experiencing grace when we are in church, or do we experience the kind of grace Jesus truly wants us to experience? The one with Him in the community, doing whatever, to whoever, whenever, it needs doing? I pray we are gifted with the messy grace, and not just the sacred grace. May we meet Jesus where He really lives, and not just where He visits.

FAITH FORMATION NEWS An Important Reminder: “It is above all in the home that before a word is spoken, children should experience God’s love in the LOVE which surrounds them. In the family they learn that God wants PEACE and mutual understanding among all human beings, who are called to be one great FAMILY.” St. John Paul II Catechists Needed! We are in need of catechists for our Sunday morning Con-firmation program and our Saturday morning and Tuesday evening elementary programs. If you have the spirit, we will give you the tools. Come and experience the joy of sharing faith with the youth of our parish. Interested or know of some-one who might be, please contact Gigi, Connie or Georgina in the Faith Formation Office at 626-457-3041. Attention all teens!
