Introduction

EUA established Council for Doctoral Education in January 2008, as its own integral part, to support the development of doctoral studies in Europe.

The Launch Conference of the EUA Council for Doctoral Education took place at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland, June 1-3, 2008.

Almost 300 academic leaders, researchers, policy makers and other stakeholders from 35 countries participated in this event.

Motivation to participate in this conference...

... from a point of view of a DEUKS Project representative:

DEUKS is based on studies and surveys related to doctoral education in Europe, conducted by EUA.

Being halfways with DEUKS implementation, and facing further and more ambitious projects on doctoral education in Serbia, to be on a ”hot spot” and hear about experiences and plans of others felt extremely appropriate.

Being the only representative of the University of Novi Sad...

...we are grateful for the financial support generously provided by

• the Mathematical Institute, Belgrade, • the Faculty of Technical Sciences, Novi Sad,

that made our attendance possible.

Key wordsKnowledge Triangle: Education / Research / Innovation

Investment in excellent people & research as an imperative.

The changing role of doctoral education and research training; Utilization of excellent researchers outside the universities; Joint programmes; Critical mass, creative research environment; Research competence and transferable skills; Improvement of supervision; Mobility, internationalization, interdisciplinarity; Flexibility, but agreement on common set of principles ; Employment market wider than academia;
