The Societal Challenge 5 Work Programme for 2018‐2020focuses on moving to a greener, more resource efficient andclimate‐resilient economy in sync with the natural environment, demonstrating a strong commitment to supporting the UN'sSustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the targets of theCOP21 Paris Agreement.
Research andInnovation
This Work Programme focuses on six priorities:
1. Climate action in support of the Paris Agreement2. Circular economy 3. Raw materials 4. Water for our environment, economy and society 5. Innovating cities for sustainability and resilience 6. Protecting and leveraging the value of our natural and
cultural assets (Earth observation, nature‐based solutions, disaster risk reduction and natural capital accounting, and heritage alive).
Research andInnovation
Raw materials are crucial for a strong European industrial base,an essential building block of the EU's growth andcompetitiveness,
R&I for sustainable access to and use of primary and secondaryraw materials will continue to play a fundamental role inmaintaining the competitiveness of industry, facilitating thetransition to a circular economy and developing low carbontechnologies.
Research andInnovation
However, the EU is confronted with a number of challengesalong the entire raw materials value chain to secure asustainable access to non‐energy non‐agricultural raw materialsused for industrial purposes, including an increasing number ofCritical Raw Materials (CRM)
Research andInnovation
The actions on raw materials are expected to contribute to theimplementation of the Raw Materials policy, the StrategicImplementation Plan of the European Innovation Partnership(EIP) on Raw Materials, the Circular Economy package and theBlue Growth Strategy.
