FINAL YEAR PROJECT DISCRIPTION
My final year project was to design and built a feeder to connect with a band saw to make a non-automatic band saw automatic. The feeder was controlled by a PLC. The feeder was responsible for clamping and feeding of the material that was being cut. The user entered the number of pieces he wanted to cut as well as the length of the pieces. The clamping of the material as well as the lifting of the band saw blade was controlled by hydraulics. The project was an existing project and improvements had to be made on the prototype. Improvements that were made included the following:
Design and built a new frame Manufacturing of all components Change the programming of the PLC Heat treatment of material Other changes to make the system work better

Overview of work: Worked in the construction sector on an R500m project for Sasol Oil in Alrode, Alberton. The project was to build a new tank farm for Sasol where the petrol and diesel could be stored in. I worked with the following contractors on site: Wetback, Group 5, WBHO and B&W. My main responsibility was to oversee all installation of the pipework and pumps done on site and to solve any problems raised by Wetback.

Overview of work: Worked at Matla Power Station as a contractor on boiler pressure parts, high pressure piping and thick wall components. It is our responsibility to determine and maintain the health of the boilers.
I was also appointed as Thick wall custodian together with my Plant Care Engineer responsibilities. The role of the Thick wall custodian is to take ownership of the module and to make sure that the setup and implementation done on all Eskom sites is correct and according to standard. This requires good communication between integration and the engineering departments. Thick wall components include the steam drum, headers, interconnecting piping and blow down vessels.
