ETO has learned that BCM Imports, thecompany behind the Erosella brand offootwear, is to close. The Leicester-based firm specialised in fetish-inspired shoes and boots for womenand for cross-dressing men plus arange of club wear. It was a regularexhibitor at Venus Berlin and the ETOShow.

Its footwear was made in China andthe company first hit problems when itsagent in the country ran into financial

difficulties and was unable to pay thefactory. BCM was forced to look for analternative supplier and began dealingwith a wholesaler.

Brian Irwin (pictured) of BCMexplained: “I ordered products from thenew company but unfortunately thestock did not arrive until November, after Venus Berlin, and sales were not asgood as expected. I later learned thatthe wholesaler had put my designs intotheir catalogue and had already shown

them at a trade event, so when mystock arrived my customers had alreadybought from them.

“And to make matters worse, thequality of the product was not as goodas my original supplier.”

Brian Irwin has now concluded thatthe cost of fighting the legal disputewith the wholesaler has made itimpossible for BCM Imports to continuetrading and he has therefore decided toclose the company.

End of the road for BCM Imports

I brought two things back from the Scala Playhouse Trade Fair last month: the first

was a particularly virulent bug - I blame the delay on the flight out there, and the

resulting prolonged exposure to an ill person - and the second was a sense of

optimism. The mood of the fair was buoyant, with manufacturers unveiling

exciting new products and retailers placing sizeable orders.

This bodes well for the forthcoming ETO Show, the next trade event in the industry

calendar and the only one to be held in the UK. The exhibitor line up is shaping up

to be the most impressive in the Show’s history and the weekend will have much to

offer every retailer of adult products, whether they trade online, from High Street

stores or via party plan. So please reserve June 28th and 29th for us - I’m sure your

business will thank you.

A big part of the ETO weekend is the presentation of our glittering chrome

trophies at the annual Awards Dinner in association with Fleshlight. So if you

haven’t already done so, can I please urge you to visit our website, log in and tell us

who you think deserves recognition for their efforts during the last 12 months? As

far as I am aware, the ETO Awards are the only ones where the finalists and the

eventual winners are chosen by the readers of the magazine.

The nominations process closes on Friday April 10th so - assuming you are reading

this before that date - it would be much appreciated if you could spare us a few

minutes of your time to ensure that the shortlists we will unveil in the next issue

are as representative of the readership’s choice as possible.

And finally, were you aware of Erotic World Book Day on March 5th? In this issue

Emily Dubberley explains what inspired her to create the event. Although the day is

over the fundraising continues - if you would like a collection of erotica from the

biggest names in the business for just a couple of quid, search Amazon for An

Intimate Education. The story behind Erotic World Book Day makes fascinating

reading and it demonstrates what a difference one determined person with a

vision can make. And that’s another reason why I’m feeling optimistic this month.

Until next month,

Dale Bradford, Editor

Rocks-Off has announced that it iscelebrating the 12th anniversary of itssignature Rock-Chick by giving theproduct a makeover. Launched in2003, in the third issue of ETO, theRock-Chick was unlike any other sextoy on the market back then, offeringsimultaneous stimulation of bothinternal and external areas with onesimple rocking movement.

“We wanted our products to bepowerful, bold, tactile, aestheticallypleasing and above all, be like noother on the market at that timeand Rock-Chick certainlyfulfilled that criteria,” saidRocks-Off co-founderand developer IanMarshall. “Rock-Chick is themostenduring ofthe ranges,it was ouroriginalproductand atthe timethedesignwasground-breaking.Reallywithout

us knowing, when we set out, it alsolead the way to our range of boy’s toys,as guys were using Rock-Chick asprostate and perineum massagers andwere experiencing the most fantasticresults so it made perfect sense todevelop this further which then lead toour hugely successful boys’ range.”

A number of subtle enhancementshave been made to the Rock-Chick,though it is still powered by the award-winning RO80mm seven-speed bullet.

Marshall continued: “It madeperfect sense for our 12th anniversary

to celebrate our success in the marketby relaunching the product that madeit all possible, but we wanted to

make sure that

we remained true to our original ethoswhen we set out with this product andthat’s what we feel we’ve achieved.”

“The new sleeker, more modernRock-Chick feels great in your hand,”added Rocks-Off sales director AndreaDuffy. “It’s just a few small changes, likea softer feel, and a more ergonomicallydesigned handle, that really perfect analready great product. We used a morepliable silicone for easier use but kept it

stiff enough to really hitthe G-Spot.”

Net 1on1 sales manager SebastianGonzalez said: “Since joining forces withLovehoney when the Fifty Shadescollection launched, we’ve worked hardto position the brand in such a way thatwould not only appeal to our existingcustomers, but also beyond. We feel weare continuing to achieve great resultsby shifting our sales focus fromprimarily adult into mainstream, byapproaching major stores which reflectthe brand’s target market.

“After the huge success of theHarmony Oxford Street store windowdisplay, we worked quickly to achievesales momentum by approaching otherlandmark retailers within the capital. After all, we feel it’s important to notonly distribute the range but alsopromote such a prevalent brand, ensuring a deeper brand loyalty andtherefore consistent sales potential asthe next two films are rolled out.”

The Fenwick pop-up shop retails across-section of pieces from the OfficialPleasure Collection, focusing more onthe softer products and toys, includingthe new luxury collection, with theWickedly Tempting Clitoral Vibratorbeing one of the star performers.

visited the store to see the plan inaction which included staff training onthe products and merchandising of therange.”

Lovehoney has achieved masses ofcoverage over the years, frominitiatives such as its Rabbit RecyclingScheme and Sex Maps of Britain, butlast month it claims to have receivedits biggest ever media response - and itwas for a product that has beenavailable to every other retailer for overa year.

The product was the Svakom Gaga -the vibe that features a light and acamera and which allows users to takefilm footage of their internals - and thePR geniuses at Lovehoney captured theimagination of the world’s media byreferring to it as the ‘sex selfie stick’.

The Lovehoney release said: “This isthe Sex Selfie Stick. Ever wondered whathappens inside the body during climax? Now you can find out. It allows users toget to know their body in its entiretythanks to the remarkably clear footagethis camera captures. Thanks to itsFaceTime compatibility, sharing theview with your lovercouldn’t beeasier -whetheryou’re satrightnext toeachother ormilesapart.”

The idea came from Lovehoney’s sextoy category manager Alice Little(pictured above), whosaid: “The

Having sex with a new partner on yourfirst night together does not kill thechances of a long-term romance, according to the results of a newLovehoney study, which has revealedthat a third of men and women (33%)have gone on to date someone withwhom they had a one night stand.

59% of men and 57% of women havegone to bed with someone the firstnight of meeting them, though far morewomen (40%) than men (27%) haveregretted a one-night stand. Women areslightly more wary than men of partnerswho want to jump into bed straightaway as one in six women (17%) saidthey would think less of someone if theyhad sex on the first night, compared tojust 11% of men.

The survey, of 2,250 people, also

revealed that most women (82%) and73% of men admitted to first nightnerves when they have sex with a newpartner. The biggest insecurity forwomen was worrying about theirappearance (84%), followed by theirsexual performance (69%) and how theywill compare with their partner’sprevious lovers (61%). Men had thesame insecurities but in a differentorder - with them it was their sexualperformance (82%), followed by howthey compare with their partner’sprevious lovers (57%) and theirappearance (54%). Women’s ideal venuefor a first date is drinks in a bar (32%)followed by a romantic meal (27%). Menprefer it the other way round - 41% (aromantic meal) and 27% (drinks).

Lovehoney co-owner Richard

Longhurst said: “What is brilliant aboutthis survey is that 83% of women and89% of men would not think any less ofsomeone they slept with on the firstnight. It shows again that we have allgrown up in the UK when it comes tosex and we are leaving behind thoseold-fashioned attitudes where peopleare judged on their sexual behaviour. The survey shows that one night standsoften lead to something a lot moreserious for many couples which is great, too. The other interesting finding is howmen and women worry about differentthings when they sleep with someonefor the first time. For women, appearance is by far the mostimportant thing, whereas men aremuch more concerned about theirperformance.”

“First night nerves every one night stand...”

The fullmesh body was taken from our originalCellBlock 13 mesh underwear collectionthat was first sold six seasons ago. Upto this point it has continued to beamong the top sellers.

“On Jack only, we have added customelastic straps to the back to furtherdistinguish our product from the rest. Atthis time we are only offering this newcollection in our top two colour ways(black/blue and black/red) to ensure astrong product launch and very highsell-through. The Alpha Harness is abrand new harness with eye-catchingdesign elements on both front andback. Fabricated from a combination ofour ‘sharkskin’ neoprene and our high-quality nylon/spandex. It has beenthoroughly tested against chlorine, repeated washing, and various otherelements, including bath oil-and water-based lubricants, urine, alcohol, etc. Thesizing on this harness has beenadjusted to fit more customers on baththe smaller and larger ends of thespectrum. Offering the four maincolours, each of which merchandisedirectly back to almost every singleother product/collection within theCellBlock 13 line. The Deviant Collection is a newrange based on the success of theCellBlock 13 Asylum Collection and it isfabricated from traditionalnylon/spandex in combination with anew coated nylon/spandex, which issaid to provide a unique and eye-catching shine. Dusedo says: “Similar tothe Asylum Collection, the tabs on the

back of the Lace-Up Jack Trunk and theLace-Up Jack Brief have been fusedtogether so they maintain rigidity andpre serve the overall structure of thegarment. A new addition to thisgrouping is the short. We tookinspiration from similar bodies thatwe’ve had in the past, such asScrimmage Short and Fugitive Short, that did very well for us. This item isperfect for the many customers whoaren’t completely comfortable withwearing backless gear in public. Itallows fora transition to more risquÈproducts and helps develop a comfortwith fetish/kink gear. The parties ofEaster (Berlin), Folsom (Berlin), FetishPride (London) etc would be the perfectplace to wear these.”

The Ambush Collection is a newcollection of gear which feature zipperson the front and back (front only onjack). Dusedo says: “While manyproducts have open backs, there isn’tmuch gear available for guys who want

On the pant and singlet, bath thefront pouch and back seat arecontrasting colour to draw the eyetowards those areas. All zippers arelined on the inside to guard against theteeth of the zipper. This collection willall but sell itself.”

In a remarkable first, soon after attaining powerthe coalition government changed the landscapefor the calling of general elections with thepassing of the Fixed Term Parliament Act 2011.Under the old regime, the calling of an electionwas generally in the gift, so to speak, of the primeminister, subject to a maximum term of five years. However, the Act specified that a general electionbe held on the first Thursday of May, every fiveyears, unless there’s a motion of no-confidence inthe government or two thirds of seats in theCommons agree a motion for an election.

What does this all mean? Not only has the primeminister lost a key element of power, the public willnow face even longer campaigns and just asimportantly, can diarise for the next election onThursday 7th May 2020.

While the policies of each party will becomemore visible as election day gets closer, the waterwill become more muddied as the rhetoric rises. The parties differ in their approach to publicisingtheir policies - in fact they could be described asreluctant to codify their thoughts. So, given what

we know now, who is proposing what?

EUROPE AND FURTHER AFIELD

The UK Independence Party(UKIP) is, as is well known, anti-Europe and so if elected, saysthat it would review alllegislation and regulations fromthe EU while negotiating aseparate trade agreement with thebloc. It would seek to get the UK outof the EU saving, it reckons, £8bn ayear. At the same time,UKIP would not seek toremain in the EuropeanFree Trade Area orEuropean Economic Arealeaving the UK to manage itsown borders.

While UKIP recognises the benefits of limited, controlled immigration, it would extend to EUcitizens the existing points-based system for time-

limited work permits. Those coming towork in the UK would be required to

have a job, speak English, haveaccommodation agreed prior toarrival, and have NHS-approvedhealth insurance.

The Green Party alsomaintains an anti-Europestance, albeit less fervently than

UKIP. It would remove EU VATregulations and VAT. However, it

wants increased funding from EUregional development funds and would

devolve spending decisions to the locallevel. The party also supports breaking up

“monopolisticsupermarkets” by

strengthening andenforcing EU competition laws.

According to the Conservative Party, the EU isheading in a different direction to that which theUK signed up to. It sees the single market asvaluable but European interference excessive. TheE

ELECTION SPECIAL:Who’s Promising What? With the general election just a month away, have you decidedwho you will be voting for yet? If not, Adam Bernstein siftsthrough all the major parties’ proposals to find out how theyintend winning the business vote...

ELECTION SPECIAL.qxp_ETO Feature #1 24/03/2015 12:12 Page 1

Page 33: ETO April issue 2015

party plans to renegotiate the UK’s relationshipwith Europe and would offer the UK population anin/out referendum in 2017. Further, theConservatives plan to prevent benefit tourism, tighten the rules for migrants, seek greater controlof justice and home affairs and renegotiate the

UK’s financial contribution to Europe.

And of course it wants to keep the pound. The Labour Party wants no more powers

transferred toEurope withoutan in/outreferendum,reform of theEU and reformof the freemovement of individuals. Immigration would becontrolled, with 1,000 new border staff and thecounting of visitors both in and out. Illegalimmigration could, reckon Labour, be controlled byreinstating fingerprint checks at Calais and closingdown student visitor visa loopholes. A Labourgovernment would ban recruitment agencies fromonly hiring overseas, ensure that EU migrants earnan entitlement to benefits, and would requirepublic sector workers in public facing roles tospeak English.

The LiberalDemocrat Partybelieves that the UKshould stay in theEU because it seesmore than 3m jobslinked to trade withthe EU. It alsothinks that being in Europe helps the UK whennegotiating non-EU trade deals. However, it wantsfurther cuts to the EU budget and bureaucracywhile seeking open borders for “highly skilled, entrepreneurial people”.

THE UK ECONOMY AND TAX

Turning to the UK economy next, UKIP plans toincrease the income tax personal allowance to thelevel of full-time minimum wage earnings (around£13,000) while introducing a 35p income tax rateon incomes of between £42,285 and £55,000,whereupon the 40p rate becomes payable. Theparty would set up a Treasury commission todesign a turnover tax to compel large businessesto pay a minimum rate of tax proportionate to theirUK turnover.

The Green Party takes a different approach andwould band corporation tax, with higher ratespayable by larger companies in order to encouragesmaller businesses. The Greens would phase outVAT, replacing it with taxes targetingenvironmentally damaging resource use,

production methods, products and pollutants - itsees VAT as highly bureaucratic. On the personalside it would merge national insurance into incometax.

The Conservative Party points to pastachievements and plans to continue to the £2,000reduction on employee national insurance for all

businesses and wouldfurther abolish nationalinsurance on jobs for thoseunder 21 and, from April

2016, apprentices. The party would keepcorporation tax at 20%, the 100% annual

investmentallowance forcapitalpurchases to£500,000 untilthe end of

2015, and wouldkeep the (doubled) small business rate relief untilApril 2016.

The Labour Party says that it wants the budgetto be run in surplus and aims to do this by furtherreducing tax avoidance, introducing a “mansiontax” on houses valued over £2m, and restoring the50p rate of tax for those earning over £150,000.Lower earners would benefit from the re-

introduction of a 10p starting rate oftax. Labour wants a levy on

payday lenderswith the funds

raised going to lowcost alternatives likecredit unions.

Also being part ofthe governmentmeans that the Liberal

Democrat Party canclaim to have cut corporation tax from 28% to 21%(20% for small businesses with profits up to£300,000), and helped save businesses £2,000 ontheir national insurance bills via the EmploymentAllowance. But going forward, the LiberalDemocrats want further reforms tobusiness tax, including businessrates, which it sees as adisproportionate burden onsmaller businesses. Personaltax allowances would beraised to at least £12,500.The party also wouldintroduce a newoffence of corporatetax evasion. Lastly, the Libdemswould increasetaxation by£8bn byaligningcapitalgainstax

with income tax and create a high value propertylevy.

EMPLOYMENT AND SMALL BUSINESSES

UKIP wants businesses to be able to discriminate infavour of young British workers and would repealthe Agency Workers Directive that gives equalrights to those working through agencies that dothat same work as an employee. The party wantsbetter skilled workers and would implement a skillsreview that feeds into the education system andqualifications. UKIP would encourage councils toprovide more free High Street parking, simplifyplanning regulations and licences for emptycommercial property vacant for over a year, andextend the right of appeal for micro businesses(those with less than nine employees or less)against HMRC action. Bank lending would betackled by UKIP through better access to businessangels and alternative forms of finance such peer-to-peer lending which leaves business equityintact. UKIP calls late payment “a scourge” ofpublic and private organisations, particularly bigbusiness but they offer no detail on how it wouldbe tackled. The party wants to see much greaterbroadband penetration and better mobile phonecoverage in the countryside.

In terms of employment, the Green Party wouldsupport more apprenticeships and place higherpriority on technical and vocational education. Atthe same time, it would provide free educationfor adults to acquire skills and qualificationsneeded for employment, and the minimumwage would rise to become a living wagewith £10 an hour being the target rate. For businesses, the Greens wouldinvest in a network of communitybanks to provide, among otherthings, a new source of financefor small businesses.

Party, being part of the governing coalition, havethe advantage of being able to talk about theirgovernment record. It has set up the BritishBusiness Bank with a claimed £4bn of backing andplans to keep Funding for Lending to furtherincentivise bank lending to businesses. The partyalso plans to treble the number of start-upbusiness loans to 75,000 by the end of the nextparliament. The scheme would have £130mbacking. Apprenticeships are referred to by theConservative Party as it claims 2m moreapprenticeships created this parliament. If re-elected they’d make it easier for businesses to takeon apprentices by abolishing national insurancecontributions for apprentices under 25 and offering£1,500 grants to those taking on apprentices.Employment law burdens would be furtherreduced for employers together with more tradeunion reform. Proposals include requiring 50%membership turnout in ballots before strikes cango ahead, ending the ban on taking on agencyworkers where employees strike, and ensuringminimum standards of service for public bodies.

The Labour Party plans to help businesses withcuts in business rates for 1.5m small firms followedby a rates freeze. The party says it would set up aSmall Business Administration to work acrossgovernment to support SMEs, and would alsocreate a British Investment Bank and a network ofregional banks to work at a local level. It also wantsat least two new challenger banks on the HighStreet. Labour too backs apprenticeships andwants more vocational education, new technicaldegrees and would give employers more controlover the design of apprenticeships.

Going further, Labour wants to abolish zero-hours contracts and give employees who haveconsistently worked regular hours the right toreceive a fixed-hours contract automatically. Theparty would increase the national minimum wageto £8 an hour by the end of the next Parliament (in2020) while increasing fines for employers who failto pay the minimum wage and give localauthorities a role in enforcement. Labour wouldabolish a loophole that allows firms to pay agencyworkers less than permanent staff. Listedcompanies would be forced to report on whetherthey pay the living wage and large companieswould have to publish their gender pay gap. At thesame time, the law against maternity discriminationwould be strengthened and the party woulddouble paid paternity leave from two to four weekswhile increasing the rate of statutory pay from£120 to £260 per week.

An “Industrial Strategy” is part of LiberalDemocrat Party policy to help sectors key to UKinternational trade, listed as motor vehicles, aerospace, low-carbon energy, chemicals and thecreative industries. It would continue to back theRegional Growth Fund (“which has alreadydelivered 573,000 jobs and £1.8bn of privateinvestment.”). Liberal Democrats would ring-fencethe science funding spending budget up to 2016.The party is pro-apprenticeship and wants anexpansion of advanced apprenticeships that offervocational education on a par with academicqualifications. Part of this means extending theApprenticeship Grant for Employers for theremainder of the next parliament. Also, followingcoalition government policy, it wants to completethe roll-out of high speed broadband, to reach over99% of the UK.

ENERGY

Energy, and its associated (generally) rising costs,is close to the hearts of business which is why UKIPsays it would repeal the Climate Change Act 2008and abolish green taxes which it thinks costs theeconomy £18bn a year. The party supports diverse

energy sources including coal, nuclear, shale gas,geo-thermal, tidal, solar, conventional gas and oil. Itparticularly supports the development of shale gas

with proper safeguards for the local environment.Further, UKIP says it would press energy regulatorsto ensure that the recent falling energy prices are

passed on.The Green Party considers access to training in

emerging areas such as green energy important if

the country is to shift towards a greener economy. It plans to help small businesses improve theirenergy efficiency and reduce energy costs through

advice services, grant and loan schemes. The Conservative Party too wants to lower the

UK’s carbon emissions but it also wants to endpublic subsidies for planned onshore wind farms. The removal of subsidies shouldn’t, say theConservatives, lead to rising energy bills. At thesame time, the party wants to improve competitionin the energy market while maintaining a good mixof energy sources. Government backed Ofgem hasreferred the gas and electricity markets to theCompetition and Markets Authority over allegedanti-competitive pricing. The Conservatives saythat the government also has measures in place, such as capacity auctions and proposals for newgeneration facilities, which it reckons would makeenergy supply more secure. Another plank inConservative policy is an emphasis on fracking andgreater tax breaks to the oil and gas industry tocounter the fall in the price of oil.

In terms of energy, the Labour Party is planningto freeze energy bills (both domestically and forbusinesses) until 2017, and would reform themarket to increase competition and introducesimple tariffs. Typical savings claimed by Labourfor the average business is around £1,800 pa.Under Labour, Ofgem would be replaced with anew regulator with the power to force energycompanies to cut their prices where there isevidence of overcharging. The party wants to set afirm 2030 “decarbonisation” target for electricityand would also enhance the Green InvestmentBank.

The Liberal Democrat Party is keen on lowcarbon energy sources and claims that its reformsto the electricity market while in government havecreated the world’s first low-carbon electricitymarket that would stimulate up to 250,000 greenjobs across the UK by 2020. They note an“infrastructure pipeline for energy” of £275bn up to2020/21.

UKIP’s view on the HS2 project is that it’s totallyuneconomic, unjustified and it would stop theproposal. The party opposes tolls on public roadsand would require foreign vehicles to purchase a“Britdisc”, before entry to the UK, to contribute tothe upkeep of UK roads and lost fuel duty.

Green Party transport policy is limited and onlytalks of new developments offering travellers arange of public transport options and offering thesigning of pedestrian and cycling routes to localshops.

Conservative Party policy on transport appearsto revolve around a number of elements including£200m that councils can bid for to fix potholes, pushing forward the HS2 rail project and overallspending cuts of 9.3%.

A document from the Labour Party (ChangingBritain) majors on passenger transport issues anddetails plans to cap annual rail fare increases, allowpublic sector operators to take on lines, devolveregional transport decision making to create singlenetworks, while making cycling safer and moreaccessible.

Liberal Democrat Party policy on transport alsosupports HS2, investment in the ‘traditional’ railnetwork and roads; it quotes the £15bn that it hashelped push through while in government. As aparty it would invest in major transportimprovements and infrastructure to create a“Northern Economic Corridor” in northern England.

With the UK’s only dedicated adult retail show just over two months’ away,we asked organiser Jonathan Kirk what visitors can expect to find at theevent this year...

For adult retailers the ETO Show weekend hasbecome a key component in their summer calendar, when every major name in distribution presents itswares at the National Exhibition Centre in theMidlands, alongside a large number of specialistsuppliers. New product ranges are introduced, specialdiscounts are offered, alternative suppliers aresourced and a whole lot of networking takes place, particularly at the ETO Awards Dinner in associationwith Fleshlight, which takes place on the evening ofthe first day of the Show.

This year the ETO Show will be staged on Sunday28th and Monday 29th June and it promises to haveone of the most exciting exhibitor line-ups ever, as wediscovered when we spoke to Show organiserJonathan Kirk...

ETO: From speaking to exhibitors, what is themood in the market? Have they experienced aboost from the release of the Fifty Shades film? Are they optimistic about this year?

Jonathan Kirk: Definitely and many of the largerretailers reported record sales in the press so thesuppliers will feel the knock-on effect. What the filmhas done (and the book before it) is make consumersthink about products they can use in their bedrooms. The more retailers can sell, the better it is for theindustry.

The Fifty Shades DVD and Blu-ray will bereleased on June 22nd - do you expect this tohave any impact on the Show?

JK: The impact has already happened with the filmrelease but I would expect retailers to be jumping onthe bandwagon with all sorts of promotions for theDVD. Again, the more that retailers maximise theseopportunities then the more product will be leavingsuppliers’ warehouses.

Do you think there would be any mileage inhaving a dedicated BDSM section for instance?

JK: Possibly, but I’m not sure whether the supplierswould appreciate being next to or opposite their maincompetitors. The ETO Show is the perfect size forretailers to come and source what they need in oneday.

With the exhibitor list yet to be revealed, canyou give us a hint of what visitors can expectthis year?

JK: We have every major UK distributor and thebiggest names in the industry along with a largenumber of specialist suppliers. The Show has a veryloyal exhibitor base of regular participants but wealways have new exhibitors with new products. ThisEr

year is no exception with new overseas companies likeBlush Novelties, Drop of Sweden, Slap Leather, ZorbaInternational and Global Products Europe exhibitingfor the first time.

Last year the Show saw Pipedream exhibit in theUK for the first time - will they be back?

JK: Yes, Pipes are back and bigger than ever!Pipedream and Scala Playhouse are working closelytogether at ETO this year and have stands oppositeeach other which are the largest in the Show’s history. They have over 250sqm of space between them sovisitors can expect to see massive amounts of stockranges from both companies.

And will there be any other big hitters fromoverseas making their UK debuts at the Show?

JK: The good news for visitors does not stop there! For the very first time in ETO Show history we havethe big four US manufacturers - California ExoticNovelties, Doc Johnson, Pipedream and Topco - all ontheir own stands. I think it shows great support for theETO Show that all the US guys are exhibiting.

Will you be promoting the Show in Europe, toattract more international visitors?

JK:We already have a significant number ofvisitors from overseas. Sometimes people have theimpression that ETO is just a UK show but every yearwe get visitors from all over Europe and these nowaccount for around 12% of our total visitors. We dospread the word very effectively in Europe withadvertising, interviews and news stories for fourmonths before the Show with EAN/eLine and SignMagazines.

Why is it so important for the UK to have a tradeshow of its own?

JK: I think this is a bigger picture answer! Peoplecommunicate differently now and there is lessinteraction on a face-to-face level. Trade shows bringeveryone together where a lot of business can bedone in a short space of time. To have a trade show inyour own country means it’s accessible for the buyersto visit and there is nothing like being able to demoproducts with the customer right in front of you.

In previous years you have utilised magazineslike The Trader and Progressive Party to promotethe Show in the UK - will you be doing anythingsimilar this year?

JK: The simple answer is ‘yes’ as we want to ensurethat everyone who can possibly attend the Show ismade aware of it.

What are your plans for the lingerie catwalk thisyear?

JK: The lingerie catwalk is a great feature to haveand both exhibitors and visitors find it useful. If youretail a lot of lingerie it really does help to see how itlooks on a live model rather than just a packagingpicture. The catwalk really can help with buyingdecisions and the exhibitors who usually participatealways give me great feedback.

Will it still be free of charge for exhibitors toshowcase their designs on the catwalk?

JK: Yes, it’s still free of charge to participatingexhibitors.

Can we expect any other tweaks to the formulafor 2015?

JK: I don’t think so - we have a tried and trustedformula which doesn’t need changing. Many of theexhibitors offer deals at the ETO Show that are not

available any other time of the year, so, if you are anadult retailer that has never visited then make thisJune a priority on your calendar. Mark off the28th/29th June, then register for your free entrancebadge at www.etoshow.com

Finally, what are you most looking forward toabout this year’s ETO Show?

JK: I always enjoy the Show and it’s great to seeexhibitors that have been with us from the very firstyear. I guess I’m most looking forward to a feeling ofsatisfaction when the doors open and the retailerscome in and you can physically see the meetingstaking place and deals being done.

The ETO Show takes place on Sunday 28th andMonday 29th June 2015 at the NationalExhibition Centre (NEC), just outside Birminghamin the UK. It is free to attend for anyoneinvolved in the business of adult products.Registration is open now. Please visitwww.etoshow.com for more information. Spending a day or two at the semi-annual ScalaPlayhouse Trade Fair has always been an excellent useof a retailer’s time, with the distributor launching newproducts, running special promotions and offloadingclearance lines at unfeasibly low prices. But a fewyears’ ago the company raised the bar several notchesby refurbishing its showroom so that every productfrom every brand it carries could be showcased tovisitors in retail displays, so they could see exactlywhat each range would look like in-store, includingwhat POS is on offer to support it.

With many brands opting to parachute in companyrepresentatives for the duration of the event, to talkvisitors through the features and benefits of theirlatest ranges, it’s hard to think what could improvethe Scala Playhouse Trade Fair, from a retailer’s pointof view.

Competitions with prizes? Nah, they already dothat.

Transforming the restaurant into a nightclub withclassy entertainment, complimentary bar and servingstaff proffering trays of delicious hors d’oeuvres?

Nope, that’s already covered too.For the first of 2015’s Trade Fairs, Scala Playhouse

chose ‘Let’s Misbehave’ as its theme and its Sundaynight party channelled the spirit of F Scott Fitzgerald’sThe Great Gatsby, with burlesque entertainmenttransporting guests back to the roaring twenties. Itwas a swell party too, and our congratulations to Katyfrom Nice ‘n’ Naughty, who was named Best DressedWoman at the event and presented with a champagneand glasses gift set.

The first day of the event is traditionally thebusiest, with queues of customers waiting for thedistributor to open so they can have first dibs on theclearance lines and special offers. In previous years itall got a bit hectic, with customers filling up wholeconvoys of supermarket trolleys with goods and thenqueuing up at the cash ‘n’ carry checkouts. These daysit’s a lot more relaxed. Customers have hand scannersand they simply scan the barcode of any item theywant and then input the quantity required - thewarehouse staff does the rest. Several vendors wespoke to said that order levels were the best for a

number of years, and one or two even mentioned theword “record”, which is encouraging. A delayed flightmeant the ETO contingent only got to experience thesecond day of the fair, however, when the mood wasmore relaxed.

“SO MUCH BUSINESS”

One of the first sections visitors encountered in theshowroom was Pjur Group, and even though thecompany was not launching anything new, salesmanager Stefan Daniel still described the fair as“amazing”. He said: “I arrived at just after nineyesterday morning and already the car park wasoverloaded. We did so much business yesterday, especially between eleven and three o’clock. Everycustomer knew that we were here and scanned a lotof our products. It was very satisfying.”

Visitors to the Trade Fair are used to seeing the bigUS volume brands (California Exotic Novelties, DocJohnson, Pipedream and Topco), upmarket labels(Jimmyjane, Ovo, Swan, We-Vibe), suppliers ofEr

Let’s Misbehave

specialist ranges (Bathmate, Bijoux Indiscrets,Fleshlight, Male Edge, Mister B, Mystim, Tenga) pluslingerie collections (Avanza, Allure, Besired, Forplay,KissMe, Roxana) and sexual health specialists (CobecoPharma, Hot, Joydivision, Shunga, Swede) but thistime they were joined by some additional names, including Baci Lingerie, Nanma and System Jo.

Despite this plethora of premiere league labels, thebrand making the biggest splash at the event wasScala’s own ToyJoy. Product manager Rick Zwannwalked us through the new attractions, starting with anew anal-themed collection: “This contains a numberof different sets of butt plugs and anal toys. Later thisyear we will add vibrating products as well. There is alot of demand for anal play, it is really up andcoming.”

Rick then showed us the new iCome by ToyJoycollection: “We actually launched the name iComeseven years ago, when we introduced products thatwould work with iPods - in those days that was ‘the’thing. We’ve brought it back as a USB range so it’sperfect for travelling and some of them have a

portable power bank for those who need it. There areeight products and they are all mix and match.”

We moved across to the Caresse by ToyJoy display:“This is a small line but it consists of very beautifulhigh-end items which are very well designed. We’velaunched two new items and updated the packagingto make it a little bit more luxurious, with the silverdetailing, to better reflect the quality of the toy.”

“A LOT OF SUCCESS WITH GIFT BOXES”

Pausing by a display of Just For You gift boxes, Ricksaid: “In the old days we had a lot of success with thePlayhouse gift boxes and after they disappeared fromour portfolio we had a lot of requests to bring themback. We have done that, in updated versions, but wedon’t use Playhouse anymore as a product label sothese are ToyJoy products. They contain items likesilicone toys, massage candles, lubricants and diamondcuffs and the removable sleeve of the box allows theretailer to display the items in a number of ways.”

The ToyJoy Designer Edition range was next: “This

is a very successful line,” Rick said. “It is all aboutinnovative high-end products which are mainlyrechargeable silicone. This is where the market isgoing and it has become more affordable. A couple ofyears’ ago rechargeables were still quite expensive butprices have come down. This is our very latest releaseand the way I explain it is first we had the We-Vibe,then we had the G-Vibe, and now we have the Icon. Itis a couples’ ring but it can be used for solo play by awoman - on her clitoris, on her breasts, in her vagina -and it can also be used solo by a man too.”

The packaging contains easy-to-understand graphicrepresentations of every possible use the Icon can beput to - by him, by her or by both - to enablecustomers to get the most from their purchase. “We’regoing to be doing that more and more,” Rick said.“We are getting better at communicating how to usethe products. We struggle with all the differentlanguages in Europe but this is self-explanatory. Assoon as someone picks up the box and opens it theywill be able to see immediately what the product cando. At this show we have also launched a limited

edition hybrid lubricant, which can be used for body-to-body massage and with silicone toys. It’s not purewater-based and it’s not pure silicone-based, it’s amixture that has been specially designed to go withthe Designer Edition toys. As a show promotion, forevery Designer Edition toy that is purchased, thecustomer gets a free bottle of Designer Editionlubricant.”

We moved across to the pastel hues of the Mae Brange: “We launched Mae B last year and it wasextremely successful. The first edition was mostlyvibrators and a few love rings and now we’ve releaseda second collection of remote control love eggs and

weighted balls, for both pleasure and for the trainingof the pelvic floor muscles. We are very happy withthis, our first vibrating, rechargeable love ball, whichis a very good price. Last year we also released theCute range and that has brought us worldwideattention due to the shapes and styles and the uniquelook and feel - all of a sudden, the whole world wasknocking on our door, which was very exciting. It’sgoing extremely well. We haven’t added to it becauseit’s such a recent release and we still need to push it sofor that reason we have developed an in-storedisplay.”

The Cute display is both attractive and easy to set

up and would look at home in any retail environment. It showcases the whole Cute range in a very smallspace and it is free of charge with qualifying orders.“We have to do our own marketing for our own labelsand we’re getting much better at it,” Rick said.“Outside of our own labels, the big news at this fair isthat we have brought Nanma back into our catalogue. We’ve worked together with them in the past andwe’ve started working together again. There is a bigdemand for their products, which we recognised, sowe brought back many of the older items that peoplein the industry recognised. But Nanma also has anumber of new product lines, which is what we areshowing here. It is great to work with them as theyare one of the factories that has everything in orderwhen it comes to paperwork and certification. Wehave also added System Jo to our catalogue. We havebeen talking with them for about a year and they areone of the fastest growing sexual wellness companies. There are all sorts of lubricants but they are a bitdifferent. They offer excellent marketing and brandawareness. It really makes them stand apart from somany others. It’s an easy sell for us. They have all themarketing materials available, displays, POS and evenstore-in-store concepts.”

“THE ABSOLUTE HIT OF THE FAIR”

We began our tour of the new releases on theCalifornia Exotic Novelties section with the gothicinfluences of Entice. The company’s Angela Mustoneexplained: “Entice is our rolled gold line. We’vebrought out these gorgeous high-end accessories thatare well priced, high quality and they have picked uprave reviews. We’ve also come up with new ImpressUSB rechargeable items. They have been the absolutehit of the Fair. You have to experience the power -touch it - they’re very strong but they are also verycomfortable. And when you squeeze the toy, thepower intensifies in incremental stages. We’ve alsohad a great response to our new Silhouette line - lookhow gorgeous this line is! The packaging isphenomenal for retail stores. It’s a USB rechargeablerange of quality silicone that comes with a one-yearwarranty and it’s all about power. We’ve had such agreat response that I would say this has been the bestScala Fair ever. We’re really happy with people’scomments and the products we’ve sold. the future with optimism.”Briana Honz on the Pipedream stand told us:

“We’re highlighting the items that we released at theJanuary ANME Show, including King Cock, which hasattracted the most attention and probably has themost appeal to the customers here. Everybody knowswe’ve done well with Basix and this is a step up fromthat. It’s got a higher grade of rubber that we use inour new facility. The material is higher quality so itgives a super-realistic feel but the price points are stillgreat. I know there is a lot of rubber on the marketbut this has been very appealing to customers - somerubbers have a sticky feel to them but this hasn’t.People also like the name! We kind of go big with ournames, we don’t hold anything back, everything is inyour face, and we’re saying we’re the new king ofUSA-made rubber. There’s almost 60 SKUs in threedifferent colours. We took a lot of the best-sellingshapes and sizes from the Basix line and put them intothis line, which is for people who want a step up fromBasix.”Turning to the Shock Therapy display, Briana said:

“Shock Therapy has always done very well for us. Itstarted as just a beginner kit and an intermediate kitbut we sold so much that we came out with cockstraps and we expanded into sexcessories. Now we’verebranded with a new logo and turned what was aproduct into a brand. Another major launch was theiSex USB plug & play range. The concept behind iSex iswe wanted it to look like it was Apple approved, witha low price point and for the customer on the go.Then there is the Crush silicone vibrator range. Theseare exclusive designs which are made with highquality silicone. It’s really hard to find a small vibrator- we don’t call them bullets - made from silicone thatis also extremely powerful. There are three differentsizes and the concept is ‘you never forget your firstcrush’, so they have names like Snuggle Bunny andCutie Pie. Other new products we’re showing are ouraward-winning Rotobators, which are nowrechargeable. They have been updated in other waysand also come in new packaging. And finally there isFuck-A-Duck, our latest gag gift item. Overall this hasbeen the busiest show I’ve been to. There have beenso many people coming in, which is so good to see.”

“THE MORE WE SHOW, THE BETTER THE SALES”

Scott Watkins on the Doc Johnson section

explained that he was there to promote his company’sexisting ranges rather than introduce new lines.“We’re proud to say that 99% of the products that welaunch are now made in America,” he said. “We areminimising our reliance on China and really focusingon what we do best, which is our rubbers andsilicones, our dildos and dongs. We have more than400 employees and we produce a huge number ofproducts at our facility every day. The actual volumesare amazing. And rather than just coming out with alot of new stuff which just clouds the marketplace,we’re focusing on how we can improve our existingitems. Our Realistic line, for instance, we’ve had this

for a long time but we’ve improved the vibratingfunctions. We’ve introduced new sizes - we just had 6”and 8” but we’ve added 7” and 9”. What we’regetting back from the marketplace is that peoplewant bigger so we continue to produce largerproducts with brands that consumers are familiarwith. Packaging has been updated also, and the boxeswill have flaps with windows, so the customer can seethe product. We’ve found that the closer theconsumer can get to the item they want to purchase, the better our sales are. You see some companies arecoming out with more discreet packaging, almost likethey’re trying to hide the products, but we find that

the more we show the better the sales. Once you walkinto an adult store, who’s trying to be discreet?”

Ovo’s focus was its new in-store retail displays forits rechargeable range, which it was pre-selling. “Thedisplay comes in two pieces and is supplied with 12

testers, one of each of the items,” explained an Ovorepresentative. “The display can go on a counter or onslatwall and it comes with interchangeable holders, soyou can take them out and customise your display. Italso gives you options such as showcasing a product ofthe week. You get the display and the testers freewhen you buy the range. All the items are availablenow and the display will be ready in a couple moremonths. Anyone buying the line here now will get thedisplays shipped to them as soon as they are ready.”

Miguel Capilla from Fleshlight told us: “We arelaunching the new Fleshlight Sleeve Warmer, which isavailable now and we’re really excited about it.”Miguel explained that many customers had

requested a way to warm their Fleshlights before use, with one of the most popular DIY methods being toimmerse it in warm water in advance, but this newdedicated product does the job, quicker, easier and farmore elegantly. “It’s really easy to use. It comes with aUSB recharger and you just put it in the sleeve and ina couple of minutes you’re ready to go. We’re alsolaunching two new Fleshlight Girls - Angela White, anAustralian girl, in April, and Tanya Tate in May.”

William Garland from Doxy Massager told us:“We’ve been with Scala for eight months and this isour second Fair. We’d hoped to show a completelynew product here but it’s taken far longer than wehoped. It’s been through several generations and thelatest version has been out for testing and it’s comeback and there are still some modifications to bemade. It’s incredibly frustrating that it’s taking so long.If it’s not ready for the ETO Show then I’m giving upthe business!”Visitors did get a first glimpse of a solid metal Doxy

Massager, which is expected to go on sale in a fewmonths: “It’s a little more powerful, it’s got a siliconehead and some bells and whistles such as LED lightsand it will come in new packaging,” said William. “Itwill have a slightly higher price point and we’repointing it towards the American market.”

“SO MUCH EXTRA TO SHOW”

Elsewhere, Topco told us it had sold out of its life-sized Penthouse Reality Girls, there was a wonderfulhigh-tech fucking machine - called F Machine Gigolo -attracting attention in the Mister B section, and therecently launched We-Vibe in-store display towerslooked stunning. Also popular was the Cash Twister - customers

stepped into a glass walled booth and were given ashort time to collect as much money as possible. Theonly drawback was that, in best game show tradition, the notes were being blown around by a powerfulwind machine. We assume that any Bank of Scalacurrency collected could be redeemed with thevendor... And for those who were not used tostanding for long periods, complimentary massagechairs were available. We concluded our visit with a few words from

Scala UK’s Clive Gore. He told us: “We had a lot ofpeople over from the UK, which is what I’m interestedin, and we’ve had so much extra to show them. Wehad to come over from the UK an extra day earlier thistime just so we could learn about everything that’snew. Not just the ToyJoy ranges but all the new linesfrom Nanma, System Jo and Baci Lingerie, so there’s alot to bring people in.”Clive concluded: “This Fair has been very successful.

I think the bottom was about 18 months ago and themarket has been building nicely since then, on asmaller base of customers because a lot of the also-rans disappeared in the recession. They tended to bethe ones that were inefficient so it hasn’t done us toomuch harm - in fact it’s done us a lot of good becausethe people who have survived are building and we’regetting our share of that business. I think the goodtimes are coming again.”

Journalist and ‘mouthy northerner’ (her own description) Alix Foxrecently hosted a series of education events at Ann Summersbranches. Paul Smith attended the first for ETO...Held at the Marble Arch branch of Ann Summers onLondon’s Oxford Street (incidentally mystery shoppedin last month’s issue), the launch talk - “A bondagemasterclass” - by Alix Fox was on February 19th - justmissing our March issue deadline.

Presented in front of a group of around 20 invitedjournalists - including a lady from The Telegraph andcontributors to many women’s magazines - theaddress covered the important elements of bondageand beyond for the beginner, perhaps switched-on tothe topic by a popular film released around thattime...

Alix began by outlining what she called SCS (nosofa connection, but Safe, Consensual and Sane)BDSM, and underlined the importance ofcommunication, trust and safe-words. Shechampioned the Traffic Light System, where redmeans stop, and orange (or amber if you prefer)

means caution. Panting “Green! Green!” is regardedas a good thing, we heard.

Alix also illustrated the appeal of BDSM,highlighting the sensual side of control, the ritualisticnature and the heightened awareness effect of sense-play, using a blindfold to create anticipation, or torelax the shy. The Tease was a big part of herinteractive demonstration, with several of the AdonisBoys - who were acting as waiters - literally roped intoher talk. Leading your own stallion to the bedroom asa way of setting the sexual scene - and subtly lettinghim know who’s boss for the night - was suggested. Then nipple-play, lube, satin knickers and leathergloves, a warm spoon (an actual warm spoon, not thecuddling sort) and the colder sort of temperature playwere introduced to the mix. Alix discussed massage oiland candles, wax-play in general and then the powerof aural sex; how music can set a scene, and how the

swish of a crop can enhance it.Bondage tape was demonstrated as a great

beginner’s product as it’s so versatile yet affordable, before Alix segued into channelling your innerDominatrix, the importance of safety scissors and thedangers of the wrong sort of rope. Then came the‘hard stuff’ with spanking techniques, safe and unsafeareas (avoid the kidneys, coccyx and while some enjoyhaving their face slapped, eyes are both delicate andimportant), and the joy of ‘implements.’

THE STING

Introducing floggers, paddles and crops whileexplaining the difference between ‘thuddy’ and‘stingy’ impact-play products, Alix made thesignificance of aftercare - both physical and emotional- a major theme. Known as ‘Sub-Drop’, the post-rush

crash caused by a slump in endorphin production canaffect those enjoying BDSM in the submissive role andAlix suggested a number of ways to counter it.Reassuring hugs and more talk being vital. She alsoexplained how to find one’s Dominant side throughinsisting on good manners, cranking-up one’sdemandingness with phrases such as “Don’t you daremove” and “Hold this for me”, before insisting beingbossy is okay because “I deserve this!”

Concluding with some toys to introduce intobondage and control roleplays, Alix enthused aboutbullet vibes before taking several more questions fromthe gathered (mostly female) crowd - by now quite‘warmed-up’ on Champagne as well as the talk anddemonstrations.

The scheduled hour running-time had stretched totwo thanks to many conversational detours caused bydiscovering one male member of the audience had‘cockzilla’ as a nickname for his manhood and the like, and plenty of audience interaction. There’s nothinglike calling for volunteers when you’ve a roll ofbondage tape in your hands to generate a good-natured ruckus it seems. I still think the Champagneplayed its part though!

Alix went on to give the same basic talk to thepublic at Ann Summers branches in Manchester,Cardiff and London across February and into March. An adapted-for-print version of the talk also appearedon Closer’s website as a beginner’s guide to bondage,by Alix on Ann Summers’ behalf.

With bondage and BDSM still being pushed to thefore, education has never been more important. Notonly simple Dos and Don’ts, but also Why Nots andHow Abouts. Teaching the potential pitfalls of therougher end of sex is important, but so is explainingthe possible benefits and introducing ideas adultconsumers may not have considered.

On that score, Alix Fox and Ann Summers delivereda well-balanced, fun and informative series ofworkshops on a complex subject. It’s a programmethat, like the edutainment events held by Sh! andothers, should be applauded. And, since they werewell received, perhaps repeated across a widernumber of branches. In-store demonstrations of

electro-stim equipment by manufacturers and Houseof Eros showing their wares in action at La BoudoirBoutique in Kent also point the way ahead to better-

informed consumers making more appropriateproduct purchases.

ETO finds out a little more about last issue’s Product of the Month, the hi-tech andtotally unique Womanizer, from Orion’s Björn Radcke...

Earlier this year Orion unveiled what it claimed was aworld first, with the launch of its Womanizer. Ratherastonishingly, the company said Womanizer wascapable of achieving what no other sex toy hadmanaged to do before - deliver multiple orgasmswithout touching the clitoris.

It sounded implausible but Orion is a hugely-respected German company, not known for hyperboleor making outlandish statements, and it does haveform in the area of innovation, most notablydeveloping the Waver technology back in 2007.

When ETO posted the Womanizer story on to itswebsite there were a number ofsceptical tweets in response, butwhen the reviews started toappear it seemed like the claimshad genuine substance tothem.

Womanizerlooks a little like across between a man’selectric shaver and something adoctor would take the temperature inyour ear with. And if its appearance doesn’tinspire confidence then neither does the sound itmakes, which is quite loud and almost like a flatulentinternal combustion engine. But then the magicstarts... the cone tip is used to cup the clitoris andWomanizer uses a gentle sucking action on it whilstsimultaneously stimulating it with pulsating pressurewaves.

We gave our sample model to a woman who isusually pretty dismissive about hi-tech sex toys and shereported back, with a rather sheepish grin on her face, that not only does it do what it claims but that it does

it remarkably quickly. And no, she wasn’t giving itback.

Other reviewers praised it for the unique sensationit delivered and because it doesn’t make physicalcontact with the clitoris -meaning it doesn’tirritate or numb, and

allowing it to beused again within seconds, ifdesired, after the first climax.

ADVANCEMENT THROUGH TECHNOLOGY

Womanizer was created by German engineer MichaelLenke, who has over 40 years of experience in researchand development, and it took around 18 months to go

from initial concept to final product.Orion’s Björn Radcke said: “There were a lot of

obstacles to overcome during that period. They didtests with more than 50 women aged between 20 and60 to end up with the best possible results. More than90% of our testers said they were satisfied with thefinished product and had received orgasms.”

Other stats from the sessions include: 63%described it as an entirely new sexual experience, 73%experienced multiple orgasms, 76% said they had an

exceptionally intense orgasm, 100% describedthe Womanizer as unique and

98% said theywould

like toownone.

TheWomanizer

is supplied in apink padded zip-up

case, of a type frequentlyused for storing hairstraighteners. With a

mesh pocket in each half, one holds the Womanizer

and the other secures the USBcharging lead and spare head

that is supplied. Bjorn denies the casewas deliberately chosen to look like a hair-care

product though: “We just created a neutral, good looking and safe case,” he said.

Bjorn said that since release, Womanizerhas been selling through in all countries and

that Orion is working on creating additionalPOS materials which will help to get the

message across in-store that the product is verydifferent to anything else on the shelf. The Womanizer comes in turquoise, magenta, pink

and black - plus two limited editions, each covered in1,200 single Swarovski crystals. It measures 160mm x50mm and has two buttons - one is a standard on/offwhile the other ‘diamond’ button increases theintensity of the sucking action. Pressing the on/offbutton once brings the speed back down to base leveland holding it down cuts the power. It takes littlemore than an hour to completely charge the deviceEr

The only slight doubt we have about the product isthe choice of name. Our dictionary defines Womanizer

as “To pursue women with a view to having casualaffairs”.

“For us it’s more a funny way of thinking of a‘womanizer’,” said Bjorn. “It’s not a ‘normal’ sex toy -it should be your ‘friend’.”

Were you aware thatMarch 5th was World BookDay? Emily Dubberley was,and here she explains howshe created Erotic WorldBook Day in just a fewweeks - and raised asignificant sum for Brook, the UK’s largest youngpeople’s sexual healthcharity, in the process...

How Erotic World Book Dayhappened - and the lessonsto be learned from it

Page 51: ETO April issue 2015

I’ve long believed that it’s foolish to trust a chef whowon’t eat his own food. Similarly, when I wrote aboutcontent marketing for the last two issues of ETO,there was a part of me that wondered how seriouslypeople would take my advice, as I’m better known asa writer than a marketer in the adult community. Orat least I was. Late one night in February (the exactdate lost to a rather full timeline), I had an idea. Andso I posted it on Facebook:

World Book Day is coming soon. Anyone fancydoing Erotic World Book Day to celebrate the diversityin erotica and raise money for sex education?

The idea had come to me when I was lookingthrough my CV and was reminded of a company I usedto work for, in my pre-adult-industry days, who haddone substantial promotion around World Book Day.Any opportunity to market books is something thatleaps out at me: as a modern-day author, I’m generallyexpected to do my own marketing.

Initially, I pondered why it was that erotic bookswere ignored on World Book Day. Erotic authors arealmost always expected to do their own promotion, press release aside - for no extra budget. The days ofpublishers with pockets deep enough to providelaunch parties - or even promo postcards - were overalmost as soon as the Net Book Agreement wasdissolved in 1997, after being deemed illegal.

Without going into too much detail as this is anadult industry not publishing trade title, the end-result of this was that the supermarkets became theprimary buyers for books, meaning literature wasreplaced by Katie Price. This is less flippant than itsounds: in the year that her first book came out she -or rather, her (sadly now deceased) ghost writerRebecca Farnworth - accounted for approximately 6%of the entire sales in the book industry. Subsequently, many bookshops have been driven out of business bysupermarkets competing on price by buying in bulk, and, until ebooks came along, literary authors inparticular have been left desperate to find a home:and struggling more when they find out how lowadvances are for non-celebrity authors. If ever therewas a genre in need of promotion, it was erotica.

I checked the World Book Day site andremembered it was a children’s initiative, aimed atpromoting reading and showing the immense worldthat could be opened up through books. Although Iwas initially disappointed, after a little mulling Irealised that the erotic writers I knew were aspassionate about sex education as I am (well, almost). And if World Book Day could celebrate education, why couldn’t Erotic World Book Day celebrate sexeducation?

DON’T STEAL - SHARE

One of the first people to respond was Victoria Blisse, whose Facebook Party with Kev Blisse, for Smut UK,had made me realise what a valuable marketing

opportunity online events could be. When I wasinvited to the Smut UK 500 Likes party, a few weeksbefore, I had no idea what a Facebook party was. However, as someone who loves the written word(and isn’t that into crowds, if I’m entirely honest) I haddiscovered through attending, that it offered all thebest parts of a party, to me - namely, chatting tointeresting people, with a sprinkling of lust thrown incourtesy of hot erotic fiction and sexy (but Facebooksafe) images being shared - along with a lot ofhumour.

Smut UK had added excitement to their event inthe form of regular competitions. I’d seen how wellpeople had responded to competitions in theFacebook group - and noticed that Victoria hadgenerally asked interesting competition questions thatstimulated debate in addition to giving people achance to compete.

Lucy Felthouse was next to say she was in. Havingworked with Lucy since the early days of Scarletmagazine (she was one of our earliest writers) andsubsequently appointed her Books Editor ofCliterati.co.uk, I knew Lucy was a powerhouse of theerotic writing community. I also knew that if she wason board, there was a good chance it would appeal toother writers as she’s one of the most commerciallysavvy erotic authors I know. If she thought Erotic

World Book Day was a good idea, there was a strongchance that other erotic writers would too; and moreto the point, she also has an ample network ofcontacts in the field so was brilliantly placed to helpensure we hit new and established talent alike.

Cara Sutra then came on board, and the followingday, a phone call to Ruby Kiddell saw her agreeingthat Eroticon would take part in the event. I’d initiallysuggested a competition but, marketing genius thatshe is, Ruby opted for a 10 percent ticket discountinstead.

FORGET NETWORKING. START WEBWORKING

It was as the plans progressed that I realised quitehow large a network each of the core team had - and(I think) coined the term webworking. Put simply, ifyou want to put together a large event quickly, itmakes sense to secure the ‘spiders’ in the middle of‘webs’, rather than try to manually fish through youraddress book for the right ‘contact’, traditionalmarketing style (however packed said contact bookmay be).

The advantage of webworking over networking isthat you can generate far more significant results atspeed - and if your core contact becomes ill orvanishes from the scene, they’ve already spread theword to a whole bunch of people - even if you don’tknow them. Dealing with groups rather thanindividuals not only adds to your resources - aseveryone has at least one skill to share - but allowspeople to play to their strengths as other people inthe network can fill any gaps. Every individualbecomes both less important, as they are part of anetwork: and more important, because the moreconnected an individual is, the more likely they are tobe a hub for a web of contacts.

Given that I had moved to the heart of theMidlands (or rather, was in the process of movingwhile #EWBD was happening - so most of it wasorganised using a dongle which became something ofa running joke), the idea of spiders at the centre ofthe web weaving marketing magic struck myimagination - which is what led me to the term‘webworking’.

YOU SCRATCH MY BACK....

Not many people in the industry know this, but priorto becoming a sex writer, I spent a decade working inmarketing for major brands including NatWest,Diageo and Mars; setting up networks of radiostations and venues; and creating promotions formainstream brands. I learned my marketing skills at asales-promotion agency: a slight twist on standardmarketing as it meant every promotion had to selfliquidate. As such, I knew the value of correctlydesigned promotions - and the importance of termsand conditions.

I also knew that inviting people to donate productswould be a relatively easy sell: adult retailers wantmore sex writers to know about their range; sexwriters generally enjoy self pleasure (along witheveryone else!). As such, asking adult brands toprovide competition prizes for an event filled with sexwriters was a match made in heaven (or possibly hell, given it has all the best tunes.) And that’s before youeven consider the charity angle.

However, there are only so many hours in the dayand, while I’ve got the contacts, I didn’t really want tohave to start working my way through my business,‘Little Black Book’. I had a house move to arrange. And I was increasingly going to be offline. I neededhelp.

After 20 years writing about sex, working inmarketing and running events, I’m fortunate enoughto have a diverse range of contacts. I was even luckierthat one of these people happened to be the award-winning Cara Sutra.

I knew that Cara Sutra had as strong a marketingbackground as I did. I also knew I’d be unable to runthe ‘commercial’ side of Erotic World Book Day alone. And I was confident that she’d be amazing - not leastbecause she keeps beating me to the ETO Award forbest writer (something I am not remotely bitter aboutas she has written many more articles than me overthe last few years - and I love her work myself!).

One Facebook message later and Cara had kindlyagreed to help secure competition prizes and assistwith promotion. Though I knew she was connected, back then, I had no idea of quite how much (deserved)loyalty she has in the industry. I did know that she hadmore up-to-date toy retailer lists than I did, however -and having access to them was something that couldprove invaluable to the event. Or, as it turns out, provide over £1,500 worth competition prizes in onlyfour weeks.

Similarly, I knew that Kev and Victoria Blisse werevery connected on the indie writer scene, fromrunning Smut. Add erotic author supreme LucyFelthouse, and Ruby Goodnight from Eroticon and

suddenly, my network had grown exponentially. Andall of them used their networks and social media cloutto help take the event to the next level.

In addition, I set up a Facebook page for eroticareaders, a Facebook discussion group for erotic writersand the event page, for the big day itself, on whichwe’d give away the competition prizes, share eroticextracts and launch our fundraising book (of whichmore below).

ASK FOR WHAT YOU WANT

One of the obvious ways to make money was througha fundraising erotic anthology. I’d previously puttogether three fundraising anthologies (UltimateBurlesque and Ultimate Decadence, with Xcite Press, which have contributed towards helping raise £10,000for Macmillan Cancer Support, along with BurlesqueAgainst Breast Cancer associated events and in thecase of the former, got to #1 in the Amazon eroticcharts after Alan Titchmarsh talked about it on hisshow) and Ultimate Pleasure with XX Corporation, which sadly did less well as we tried to do it outsideAmazon’s stronghold. Sadly, it is very hard to succeedwithout Amazon, no matter how you may feel abouttheir ethics.

As I’ve had so many books published (now 30,including An Intimate Education), I’m all too aware ofhow Amazon works and the key is to get lots ofpeople buying the book in one small time period asthat makes you chart - and once you’re in the charts, you’re a lot more likely to stay there due to increasedAmazon visibility. This is what led to the idea oflaunching the book at the Facebook party.

With all three prior books, I’d had guest editors: asan ex-magazine editor I believe in the ‘three pairs ofeyes before print’ rule. Luckily, erotic author RebeccaBlack had popped up in the discussion group andoffered her services. After checking her (beautiful)erotic writing at http://rebeccablackerotica.com, Igratefully accepted her assistance, along with that ofan editor who wanted to help out anonymously.

We had an online discussion about the book’sname, settling on An Intimate Education as it coveredboth the erotic and educational aims of the day. I putout the Call for Submissions, emphasising that wewanted stories with a sex ed theme and clearboundaries and consent to ensure there was nobacklash for sexual health and wellbeing charity,Brook (our chosen charity partner who were open-minded enough to agree to let us use erotica to makethem money).

The deadline was set - only a few weeks away aswe were tied to March 5th for launch, as we couldn’tmove World Book Day. And before long, entriesstarted to roll in and Rebecca got out her red pen, andstarted cutting them down to size, before forwardingthem to the other editor, and finally me, to ensureeverything met the brief.

LISTEN

That’s not to say things went entirely without a hitch. When Kev Blisse revealed the initial page header, hemet with enthusiasm from numerous people in thegroup, and one writer (who shall remain nameless)who decided the image was sexist and perpetuatednegative images. She suggested we should have a manas the majority of erotic readers were women. Ipointed out that not all women are heterosexual, andtried to deal with her concerns in as polite a way as Icould, including offering to produce numerousheaders to cover as many sexualities and genders aspossible, but no matter what I said, she refused tolisten, instead deflecting every view that didn’t fitwith her perception and refusing to accept any of thecompromises I suggested.

Luckily, she eventually backed down after a longonline debate that, ironically, ended up strengtheningthe group. It wasn’t the criticism that was an issue:when Kristina Lloyd came on board, she agreed withthe other author’s reading of the visuals. However, rather than pointing fingers, she provided useful linksto why it was problematic and made it clear she couldsee that we were making an effort.

I’ve long respected Kristina, who has been an eroticwriter since the early days of Black Lace. I also didn’twant the group getting derailed with somethingminor (compared to revitalising the erotic industryand raising money for sex ed). As such, Kev designed anew header the following morning, that included nopeople at all, but instead a rose, with open petalshinting at the sexy nature of the group. Luckily, noone found the rose offensive so the matter was easilyresolved.

In addition to this, I initially set up the FB partypage as invitation only, in an effort to avoid gettingspammed and/or having to deal with endlessinappropriate messages (we got rape threats when wefirst set up Cliterati in 2001, so this wasn’t withoutprecedent).

However, this acted as a deterrent for many people- as was evidenced when, on Cara Sutra’s (vehement)advice, I opened the group to all. Rather than theflood of teenagers and trolls I’d expected, it openedthe gates to hundreds of erotic writers. By the timethe day of the event came, we had over 200 people inthe discussion group and over 300 at the party.

How did we manage it from that point? You’ll haveto read next month’s column to find out. But you canget a sneak preview of some of the highlights -including the creation of a new potato-inspired eroticgenre - at http://www.eroticworldbookday.co.uk.

Erotic literature is enjoying a raised profile, but as our own Top Gun - maverickjournalist Paul Smith - discovered at the Smut Luton event last month, perhaps wehave Amazon’s Kindle to thank rather than Ms James... A brick-vaulted cellar below a former hat factory inLuton may not be everyone’s idea of an eroticdestination, but on March 7th the Smut UKbandwagon rolled into town, bringing a fresh sexybreeze with it. The event, which ran from 9am to5pm, is the latest incarnation of a roving gathering oferotic writers, bloggers, sex toy reviewers, kink-friendly journalists and their readers which started inScarborough in 2013. Co-organiser Victoria Blisseexplained: “Smut in the City was unleashed inScarborough, because we love the town and wantedan excuse to go there with lots of smutty people. Theevents we run are very social and laid-back, aimed at

authors and readers as a place for them to gettogether to talk about ideas, the books we like -without getting any funny looks. As a writer - orreader - of smut, you do get some strange reactions. Isuppose I have to thank EL James for giving us a bitof an ‘in’ when talking about erotica to those people!Smut Luton’s our first ‘southerly’ event and it’s herebecause our sponsors, House of Erotica are here atThe Hat Factory. Upstairs in this very building. Theyfelt the basement would be a good place to hold aSmut event, and they’re right; it is. We’re open toother locations and we’re always looking for newplaces to spread the Smut word.”

Victoria beamed as she said: “It’s been busy andmore people keep turning up, which is brilliant. Ibegan with a workshop with all sorts of strange thingsto smell, touch, hit each other with... We’ve promotedthe event through word-of-mouth on social media.Lots of people have come quite some way to meettheir favourite erotic authors and enjoy theatmosphere, and I’m seeing lots of new faces as it’s afresh area for us. It’s a very vibrant community sowe’ve little need for print advertising or what-have-you, but if we ever got to a grander scale and wantedto do something big and bold and brash, then we’dlook at a wider way to promote the event. Past Smut meets have been Smut by in Sea inScarborough in 2013 and 2014, Smut by the Dock aspart of the last Erotica (October 2013) and the firstSmut Manchester, last year. As a ‘brand’, it’s clearlygathering traction and recognition. Victoria Blissefinished: “The events are more than just the talks, workshops and demonstrations. We have retail spaceat all Smut meets, generally in a separate room. Stalls

of books, BDSM kit - authors like pretty things too, especially if it relates to their preferred genre, so it’s achance for them to see equipment and get inspiredtoo. If any of ETO’s readers would be interested in astand at a future Smut event, I’d say get in touchthrough our umbrella site: ILoveSmut.uk. We’ve allour info up there about where we’ll be Smutting nexttoo.”

NOT LOST THAT LOVING FEELING

With Smut Luton’s theme of Kinkification, Smut’swebsite describes the events as “safe, inclusive days

out when Erotica & Erotic Romance Readers andWriters get together to socialize, exchange ideas andinspire one another.” What I saw below the meanstreets of Luton certain matched that missionstatement perfectly. “Has Fifty Shades of Greywhetted your appetite for more erotica?” posed theback of a promotional postcard. After a 12-1.15 lunch break, Smut Luton recommenced with a dazzling display of hula hooping skills by Helen Orford...

on and off the page with Victoria Blisse at 9.30, andfollowing a quick break, at 10.15, a Reading Slam withseveral writers given five minutes - but no clock - togive a book recital in a conference room setting. Those going over were severely punished with a publicspanking.

After a 12-1.15 lunch break, Smut Lutonrecommenced with a dazzling display of hula hoopingskills by Helen Orford (she was on the BBC1 Ident withtumbling girls doing Aerial Silks acrobatics and hadmet Victoria at a Sh! book reading betweenperformances) and then Charlie J Forrestdemonstrating Rope Play and bondage techniques.‘Kinky Hobbies’ with Zak Jane Keir giving a sexy spinto pastimes was the following talk, with a finalReading Slam closing the curtain on the event.

Long before all that though, I met with House ofErotica (seen shortened to Hoe, which amused me

more than it should), which was the main sponsors ofSmut Luton. Boss Paul Andrews told me: “We loveworking with the Smut UK guys and do most of theirbooks too, in paperback and as eBooks. As eBookdistributors, we’re probably one of the biggest in theUK, doing our own books as well as lots of otherpeople’s. We kickstarted Xcite’s eBook business. They’ve moved away from us as they’ve grown butgoing back some years, they were with us initially. We’ve worked with Chimera, Kink - they’re quite bigwith about a thousand titles - and Silver Moon, overthe years. Obviously we enjoy working with manydifferent authors and publish many different genres.I’ve been in the erotic market for the best part of 20years, from websites for sex workers, adult contentand in the past, adult films. We currently have about200 live eBook titles, but our back catalogue must besomewhere over 3,000. Perhaps 4,000, with most still

available digitally. We have a physical print imprint, but most physical books are Print on Demand. We sellmore of those than print-run titles, which reflects thecurrent market. We sell around the world and it’s afairly big business, generating tens of thousands ofpounds each month.”

Wondering if the eBook side is open to piracy, Iasked about Digital Rights Management. Pauldescribed how HoE works with companies such asApple, Kobo and Amazon and generally they havesophisticated DMR, but there are a few where it canbe an issue. “It may surprise you that we work withlots of libraries,” he added. “We supply a lot of adultbooks to a lot of adult libraries, especially in theStates. They’re all digitally protected to stopduplication and distribution, protecting our authorsand us. Piracy is a far smaller issue for us than it is forthe film or music industries.

“Another area we’ve explored is erotic audiobooks. We now do fewer than we used to in allhonesty, ultimately because it’s quite expensive to do.To do well that is. We have a studio here at The HatFactory, but the real cost is in editing. If you get areader who gives a perfect reading, that’s great, butthe reality is most audio books need quite a lot ofpost-recording cleaning-up. Having said that, we dohave them and have had some interesting successes -both adult and non-adult. It’s not a core business, butit’s an extra we provide for books which have soldsignificantly well.”

As well as being a big player in the saucy eBookand physical erotic fiction markets, Paul was veryproud to be involved with a newer technology;ChatBots. While Bots have a bad reputation for beingused by scammers, Paul was very keen to point-outhow the next generation of Bots - intelligent softwareagents - will take things to a whole new level, erotically.

“We recently did an Indiegogo [similar toKickstarter] campaign for a technology project whichraised £150,000 for development, and off the back ofthat, in a couple of months’ time we’ll do another foran Erotic ChatBot. The technology guys behind it havewon the Loebner Prize - the Turing Test contest that’srun every year in New York. The development teamhave won it twice now, so you know it’s veryadvanced, cutting-edge stuff. We intend to take thatartificial intelligence technology and apply it to

erotica, working with some of the authors herehopefully, and some brand partners as well. It’s aninteractive, non-human service, but so advanced youcan’t tell you’re talking to a programme. Rather thanbeing a bit of fun - a novelty - we intend it to besomething people enjoy on a deeper level and returnto.”

Paul continued: “It learns your preferences and ispersonalised so when the user logs into their accountthrough an app or online, it will remember them andwhat they like. There will be an initial questionnaireto fill in about tastes - gay, straight, transsexuals, aliens, whatever - and it’ll learn through feedbackover time as they go along too. The user experiencewill be fully customisable. One of the perks we’ll offerthrough the Indiegogo campaign will be users canpre-order their personalised ChatBot. We expect to belooking for investment from around May, along withpotential partners interested in branding as it’sobviously got great potential for the adult space. It’dbe great to work with some sex toy companies, cam-girl services and so on. It was a technology waiting tohappen and we’re confident ours will be the mostadvanced out there. The way it learns is very ‘human’.Initially it’ll be a text-only service, but we’re looking atspeech synthesis and speech recognition movingforward. It’s a little chicken and egg, but ironing anybugs out of the text version will lead to a better voiceexperience later.”

Ambitious stuff! But the £150,000 already raisedfor non-adult application of the technology wasachieved in 36 hours, so there are clearly many peoplewith an eye for its potential. Paul said: “It’s good forcompanionship - people who just want to chat to afriend. We feel the technology has potential forchildren and teens too, as an educational tool or asafe place to interact online.”

Returning to adult, Paul concluded: “We’re lookingto have the service up at the back end of this year, asthe core technology is already in place. It’s not aquestion of the programming, it’s more aboutcontextual content, which is why we’re working witherotic writers to give the output a very human feelrather than just picking appropriate-sounding wordsfrom a list. The intention is to make something veryerotic to fit tastes from mild to full-on. The initialstructure is based around male-female and female-male interaction, but we’ll do gay, lesbian and

bisexual versions etc. It’ll evolve depending ondemand.”

on April 1st, but this should give an idea of the needsof publishers.

LUTON DAREPORT

Author Lucy Felthouse was found behind her tablegroaning with Best New Erotica Vol.12, Sexy JustWalked Into Town, Uniform Smut and lots of flagshighlighting anthologies, new titles and Amazonaward-winners. “I’m with multiple publishers,”commented Lucy. “HoE, Xcite, Evernight Publishing,Totally Bound... There are a lot of players in themarket, which is a good thing as authors can put a lotof eggs in a lot of baskets. The Fifty Shades thing hasobviously had a big impact. The first time around withthe books opened up a whole new market to us. Someweren’t big readers at all, others just not all thataware of erotica. Some read ‘Grey and then droppedoff the radar but we have inherited an awful lot ofnew readers. And writers. The downside for moreestablished writers is we can get accused ofbandwagon-jumping but I’m quick to point out howlong some of us have been writing erotica. Gooderotica. But hey, the Brit Babes did just do a Sexy JustGot Rich anthology about billionaires, so we’re notimmune to trends but we did put a twist on it. Thefilm’s caused a resurgence but other influences arestrong too. Game of Thrones has fantasy elementsthat have inspired. It’s not a genre I’ve had a go atmyself yet though. Dragons are good, especially whenthey sound like Benedict Cumberbatch!”

Discussing sales, Lucy said: “I sell something like160 eBooks for every physical book sold. It’s by far thelarger part of the erotic book market. I know somepeople prefer a printed book - hence the Smut eventsare a great place to stock-up - but the anonymity ofeBooks is a strong draw. No cover on the back of yourKindle to show people what you’re reading on the

bus... Plus the simple fact many publishers don’t wantthe financial gamble of doing a print-run. The cost ofPrint on Demand is a limiting factor too. For shorterworks - novellas and short stories - the eBook route iseven more cost-effective. In the last few years there’sbeen a trend away from collections of shorter workstowards full-length novels. People still like anthologiesas they’re a great way to sample a selection ofauthors, or a genre, but longer, more immersivestories seem to be in vogue. I’m not able to write fulltime, but that is the dream and in the meantime, Ilove it. Even if I sold nothing I wouldn’t be able tostop writing. I love telling these stories. It all startedfrom a dare. Reaction to what I wrote was veryfavourable, it was quite a buzz and I’ve never lookedback. It’s still exciting to see my name in print, andhaving published 32 different stories last year it’s stillnot got old. The community makes it wonderful too. Ilove doing events like this.”

With an erotic raffle running (“£1 per strip fromVictoria. Who knows, she may even give you raffletickets too!” - or beat her husband - and co-Smutorganiser - Kev at N64 Mario Kart for a free strip), itwas good to see prizes - books and toys, includingNalone - supplied for free but asking to be reviewedto give something back to the kind businessessupporting the raffles or tombolas.

Cara Sutra, perched behind a table heavy with FiftyShades: Real Women Confess DVDs, dildos and £10corsets and her own bondage collection, took amoment out to chat. She said: “What’s happening inthe world of Cara Sutra? Everything! I’m very busy. Werecently opened an eShop on the CaraSutra.co.uk site, selling my Fantasy kit, toys, Give Lube, CheekyWeekender kits, DVDs... I’m adding corsets and Smutanthology books, more toys... I have to be careful notto clash with advertisers, but I’ve the bonus of a sitewith lots of traffic that’s full of content, so it seemed

an obvious addition. It’s been great to meet peoplehere today who read my blog, and I worked withEmily Dubberley on the Erotic World Book Day, whichwas a big success. We crashed servers, so I’d call that asuccessful charity promotion! The book’s still availableon Amazon for less than £3 with all profits going to asex education and wellbeing charity. A very worthycause. I took control of the Sexhibition Twitteraccount for a week and follower numbers doubledwhile I was in charge, which was flattering. The powerof giveaways! I also did a bit for Cosmo’s websiterecently, which is something I hope to repeat. I’m stillwriting for my site all the time too, so it’s fair to sayI’m kept busy. I may have to get some admin help in asI respond to email after email which stops me gettingother work done.”

Also looking forward, Cara added: “We’ll beexhibiting at the ETO Show in June again, with theCara Sutra Collection Fantasy Bondage Kit. I’m notsure we’ll have additions to the range with us therebecause, as you know, I’m picky, but I’ve been talkingwith Vic - the other director - about where we gonext. It’s a show I look forward to, with a dressing-upopportunity for the ETO Awards night too!”

Upcoming Smut events include May 23rd inScarborough for the third Smut by the Sea, with thetheme of the paranormal, and a gathering at the July11th Manchester Alternative and Burlesque Fair, withan Erotic Tombola. Then there’s a big presence atSexhibition in Manchester on August 21st-22nd, with afurther event - Smut Manchester - on October 24th,with the theme of ‘Everyday Kinky’. The final Smutget-together planned for 2015 is at the new Sexpoevent at Olympia, from the 13th to the 15th ofNovember. If you’ve an interest in the erotic literaturemarket, attending one of the above could well be anentertaining, enlightening, educational expedition. And you’re very unlikely to get Goosed.

Patents & confidential information.qxp_ETO Feature #2 24/03/2015 12:30 Page 1

Page 61: ETO April issue 2015

Previous articles in this series have provided anoverview of different Intellectual Property Rights (seeETO issue 131) and have taken a closer look at issuesarising in the area of Copyright and Designs (see ETOissue 132). In this article, however, we are going totake a look at patents, protecting your invention andconfidential information.A good starting point might be to ask what a

patent actually is? Patents are legal rights that enablethe owner of the patent to stop someone else frommaking use of an invention. It’s important here torecognise that this is a right to prevent others fromusing your invention and not a right that necessarilygives you the right to use your own invention! Thismay sound a little strange. Surely, you might ask, if Ihave a patent then I can use my invention? The answer is, not necessarily. Many patents

actually relate to inventions that are improvementsover an existing invention. If that existinginvention is covered by a granted patent that isin force then you may find that you needpermission from the earlier rights holder touse your invention because yourimprovement naturally uses the protectedparts of their invention. It should also berecognised that patents are territorialrights; a patent is required in each countryof interest if protection is required inmultiple countries. When we refer above to “making use of an

invention” we should note that patents grant theirowners exclusive rights to prevent others frommaking, using, selling, importing or distributing thepatented invention without permission. An invention may reside in a physical product (eg a

new type of door lock, a new fuel injector), a processsuch as a method of manufacturing something or acontrol system (eg a computer control system for abraking system). Most inventions are improvements onsomething that has come before and relate totechnical advances that solve technological problems.

IS IT SECRET? IS IT SAFE?

These words may have been spoken by Gandalf theGrey in Lord of the Rings to Frodo in respect of theOne Ring but they have relevance to the world ofpatents (bear with me here....). There are manyhurdles to overcome before your patent applicationreaches the grant stage but it is extremely importantnot to publicly disclose your invention, for example byincluding details on your website, before you’ve fileda patent application. Any disclosures that you makebecome part of the ‘prior art’ and could be citedagainst you when your patent application is examinedby the Patent Office. So, in a worst case scenario yourown disclosures could preclude you from getting apatent through to grant. It is also worth stressing herethat public disclosures mean any disclosures be they toa company, at a conference, on the TV, in thenewspapers, online or even to an individual! So, to return back to Gandalf’s comment, you

should be asking yourself whether your invention hasremained secret in the period leading up to filing yourpatent application. Remember to Keep it Secret, Keepit Safe until you can speak to your patent attorneyand decide on the best way to protect yourself. Now, it should be acknowledged that in some

circumstances you may find yourself needing todisclose information to someone outside of yourcompany, eg to an investor, to a developer etc. Aconfidentiality arrangement is vital in suchcircumstances but, if possible, think about filing apatent application before you make the disclosure.

“But I’ve not built a prototype yetso I can’t patent it!”

You don’t need to have built a prototype orvalidated your new process before you can apply for apatent application. As long as you’ve worked it out insufficient detail that you could describe it to a skilled

person in enough detail to allow them to reproducethe invention then you can consider filing a patentapplication.

WHAT HURDLES ARE THERE TOGETTING A PATENT GRANTED?

The invention described in a patent application mustmeet three main requirements in order for a patent tobe granted: it needs to be novel, inventive and haveindustrial applicability.Novelty and

inventive stepsare

judged with respect toprior known systems, products or methods - the ‘priorart’. Patent applications are therefore examined byPatent Office Examiners to determine whether theymeet these criteria in light of any relevant prior art.

Novelty - a patent specification will contain aseries of legal statements, the ‘claims’, which definethe scope of protection. If a claim contains, say, threefeatures (A, B and C) then that claim is regarded ashaving novelty if there is no single document in theprior art that discloses the same combination offeatures A, B and C. Novelty is assessed against anydisclosures by anyone (the patent applicant or a thirdparty) anywhere in the world - although someterritories, such as the USA, have slightly differentapproaches for assessing novelty.

Inventive step - if the prior art only includes adocument that discloses features A and B, then a claimto A, B and C has novelty. The examiner then has toconsider if the missing feature C makes the claimedinvention inventive or if it would be obvious to askilled person to add that feature to the knowncombination of A and B based on any disclosures thatare already known in the technical field in question.

INDUSTRIAL APPLICABILITY - THE INVENTIONMUST BE CAPABLE OF USE IN INDUSTRY.

In many territories around the world, including the UKand Europe, certain types of inventions are moredifficult to patent than others. Such inventions oftenrelate to computer implemented inventions andbusiness methods.

“But I’ve got a software invention.You can’t patent software!”

Don’t believe the hype! As long as certainconditions are met, patents can be obtained forsoftware inventions (or computer-implementedinventions). See our five common misconceptionsabout software patents post on IPcopy at:https://ipcopy.wordpress.com/2014/06/16/5-common-misconceptions-about-software-patents/It is true that there may be additional issues to

consider compared to hardware based inventions andthere may be instances where the invention inquestion falls within a class of subject matter thatcannot be patented but this assessment is not

necessarily obvious. It should also be appreciated thatthe approach in other countries (eg the US and SouthKorea) is different to the approach in Europe and theUK. So even if something is unlikely to be patentablehere, it may still be patentable elsewhere.

PATENTS ARE EVIL/I’M NEVER GOING TO SUEANYONE SO WHY BOTHER?

There are many reasons to consider filing a patentapplication to your invention. The classic use

of a patent is to prevent othersfrom using/working theinvention described inyour patent. However, there are otherreasons to considerpatents, namely:

* Patents can beused to raisemoney frominvestors. Just thinkhow often theDragons on Dragon’s

Den ask if the product iscovered by a patent.

* They can be important inLicensing and M&A proceedings.

* They can be a deterrent to competitors.

* They can control your supply line. Imagine youdevelop a new product and sub contract for theprovision of certain components or parts that you’vedeveloped as part of the product. Your sub-contractormay be tempted to commercially exploit thecomponents they’ve worked on but if you have apatent to the parts in question you can control whatthe sub-contractor can and cannot do.

* They can reduce your corporation tax. The UK’sPatent Box regime will, once it is fully in effect, reduceyour corporation tax to 10% from 21% on thequalifying parts of your profits. For this to be anoption, however, you need to have a granted UK orEuropean patent (or a limited number of othergranted patents in Europe) and a UK company. Ifyou’re wondering whether Patent Box is worth it foryour company then we can put you in touch withpeople who can give a rough answer to that questionwithin 20 minutes.

WHAT SHOULD I DO NOW?

If you’ve got this far then congratulations! My adviceat this stage would be to collect all the informationyou have that describes your invention and then seekout your friendly neighbourhood patent attorney. Most patent firms, including Keltie LLP, will probablyoffer some kind of introductory session free of chargeand it would be worth taking that time (usually ameeting of around an hour) to speak to a professionaladviser. There should be no obligation to continue ifyou don’t want to but any such meeting will give youthe information you need to make an informed choiceabout patenting your idea. The take home suggestion from us is: if you’ve

developed something you think is new or cool/solves aproblem then go and see a patent attorney for theirinput. You never know, something might bepatentable!

Everybody - you, me, your customers, mine - has theirown experience of sex. It’s as idiosyncratic as the wayyou walk and the way you talk. Everyone has theirown sense of sexual identity, and that’s a beautifulthing. If you design, produce, sell, consume, use orare otherwise involved in the adult industry in anyway, you should feel electricity in your veins at thegrand and universal exhilaration of it all. I love it andthat love is not dimming, even after 11 years now. Istill smile while I write and I still giggle in meetingsabout dildos.

That’s because it’s always changing. Sex and byextension the adult industry is nebulous, its formchanges all the time. Popular sex-positivespokespeople held in high regard can be toppledovernight like Middle Eastern dictators, because of asingle slip of the tongue or a clumsily used phrase.Sexual trends drift from direction to direction and justwhen you think you understand it you wake up onemorning and discover everything’s changed again -there’s a new set of rules to follow just when you’velearned the last. It’s a dogfight, it’s particle physics, it’stectonic, it’s politics, it’s democracy, it’s anarchy, all atthe same time. That’s what keeps sex new.

The most exciting movement at the momentregards gender identity (or gender nonconformity),and if you’re not keeping up you’ll quickly be leftbehind because it’s a fast-paced environment, abroiling, frothy soup of neologisms and politics. For

the first time in thousands of years, perhaps ever,we’re in a better position to feel comfortable aligningwith a gender identity that might be different fromthe one that might be traditionally or culturallydetermined. To clarify: it’s easier than ever in thewestern world to say that your gender or yoursexuality is not determined by the flesh between yourlegs.

That’s by no means to claim it’s an easy thing to do,incidentally. All I’m saying is that it’s no longer tabooto consider or discuss the possibility that a proportionof us do not conform to the binary labels or idealsestablished over the last few millennia of recordedhistory.

It’s a naîve mistake to conflate gender andsexuality but I’m going to do it anyway. In Decemberlast year, common-sense-slinger and occasional goodguy Dan Savage wrote, “gender identities - you needan Excel spreadsheet to keep track these days”. He’sright, and when it comes to designing and marketingsex toys, focusing a product on one group is often toexclude all others. That often draws the ire of themore militant sections of the sex toy community: forexample, a pleasure product marketed squarely atmen will often be branded misogynistic, or a productthat specifies that it’s designed for a certain part ofthe anatomy - the G-spot, for example - will suffercriticism for being proscriptive.

I’m not complaining at all: criticism of what we do

is necessary. But it’s hard to know what will work andwhat will not, in fact it’s usually impossible. Marketingsex toys is like doing a Rubik’s Cube blindfolded:you’re never quite sure how to begin, the best you cando is feel your way through it, and you need someoneelse to tell you when you’ve finished. It’s a processbased on experience, instinct and intuition more thanknowledge. You grope your way along, likenavigating hotel corridors drunk, sliding down walls. But somehow, often by luck more than judgement, you usually make it.

But there’s a way through all this. I’mprofessionally proud and personally embarrassed tohave been the source of a number of misguided orcontroversial sex toy marketing campaigns. Some ofthem were very successful; others were forgotten asquickly as they began, probably for the best. I’ve hadtime to experiment with tone, with audience, withdirection. And if there’s one piece of advice I canimpart that might be of value to someonesomewhere, it’s this: if you take gender and sexualityout of your communications, you’re far more likely forit to be welcomed. Stop trying to cater to an ever-changing mix of individual audiences and target sexitself.

I proved this recently with the launch of the‘world’s first gender-neutral sex toy’. For a couple ofyears I’d been stripping out gender-specific languagefrom my below-the-line copy, making the products

kind of sexless in their language. This was reasonablysuccessful. Then more recently, I tested the water bywriting a campaign very obviously at men, with mixedresults. It suffered harsh criticism from those outsidethe target group, but was warmly welcomed by thosewithin it. So far, so predictable.

Then, armed with that experience, I had theopportunity to try another direction in which I wrote acampaign that was explicit in its genderlessness. Itested being actively vocal about a sex toy rejectingideas of anatomy or sexuality - as opposed to quietlyignoring the issue altogether, which is what I’d largelybeen doing up until then.

The result was phenomenal, and to this day thatproduct and the campaign pop up in mainstreampublications and in unusual places. People saw thesincerity in the language, and related to it. It wasoutside gender, outside anatomy, outside politics, andas a result was accessible to all.

Every so often, you get it right from the start.Something clicks, and you realise that you have theright product to speak to the right audience and theright message to do it with.

But other times, being able to talk openly withaudiences is the product of being sensitive to changesin the wind. This year more than ever, it pays to be sexpositive and gender neutral.

“I tried one of them rabbit vibrators once, but I didn’tlike it...it got tangled in my pubes.”I momentarily forget what I’m about to say, and

the room falls quiet as we all imagine an untamedbush with a Jessica Rabbit stuck in it. Not pretty. “Timefor another Blood Plasma shot” hollers a guest -excellent timing, that man! There are 25 of us, slouching, perching or standing

in the reception room of a posh house in Manchester. The owner has taken his family to Pizza Express, leaving us, a bunch of strangers, to eat, drink and bemerry in his home. The host for the evening, Brian, isbusy mixing cocktails in the kitchen, a woman isburning slices of pizza in the oven and the rest of usare avoiding the loo at all costs - it’s got a faulty flush.‘Surreal’ doesn’t even begin to describe it!I’m at Sex, Cancer & Cocktails as part of a four-

women expert panel alongside Dr Ali Mears, NurseBeth McCann and author Jacqueline Stacey. Brian hasinformed us that we each have 10 minutes to give ourpresentations. For us, all of whom usually speak for upto an hour, 10 minutes seem like an impossible task.Under the circumstances, there’s only one thing to do:I blindfold Brian, stroke him with a kitchen fork(“pervertable”) and throw free lube at the guests. They love it.This past month has been about education and

wellbeing; between us, Team Sh! have spoken to,stroked and spanked all manner of peeps. Ky(Founder, MD & Boss) presented a guided tour at theWellcome Exhibition; My Body Back Project held theirfirst meet-up at the shop; we had 18 sex-therapists-in-training over for a fun afternoon and I taught a classon Bedroom Bondage at the Women’s Institute inWest London. Awesome!Gone are the WI days of homemade jam and

knitted baby booties. These days they’re all into FiftyShades. A lovely woman volunteered for bottoming-duties, but it soon became clear (to her) that she hadno idea what she’d let herself in for. Duly blindfoldedand tied up, I warmed up her bum by spanking it withmy bare hand (she’s shrieked with a mixture of joy andembarrassment), before spanking her with a selectionof implements. 75-year-old Mary almost fell off herchair with laughter and the other ladies remained at arespectful distance, lest I volunteer them too. Oneguest told me that it was so long since she last hadsex, she can’t remember what it’s like. Anotherwoman was sat at the edge of her chair, legs crossed, rocking back and forth. I wasn’t sure whether sheneeded a pee or if she was enjoying a stealth-wank(best not to ask, eh!). At the end of the class theyoffered me a chocolate cupcake as payment, which Iaccepted. It seemed like a fair trade-off.A woman in her early 50s has made an

appointment to come and see me at the shop. Shetells me she has a split clit and says that Sh! is her lasthope. Radiotherapy (for anal cancer) caused theirreparable damage, and she has lost all sensation inthe area. Her doctor matter-of-factly told her that“the menopause [brought on by surgery] is God’s wayof telling you that your sex life is over”. I’m beyondoutraged, and set about reassuring her. I introduceher to Sensuva Arousal Oil - I absolutely swear by thisproduct - and we each try a drop on our tongues (theblend of essential oils is for your clit, obviously, butthat’s taking the demonstration too far!). We sittogether, almost drooling from our swollen tongues, and I suggest she tries a Wand massager on the lowerpart of her stomach. I hope that she’ll feel the ripples

further down, and indeed she does! She tells me she’sfeeling confident and sexy for the first time in years. She’s glowing as she pays for her purchases, and callsme early the next morning: “My clit is working!”Sometimes it’s a real pleasure to say it: I told you so.

A young guy turns up, wanting to buy a collar andpaddle for his parents. He feels their marriage needs“spicing up”. I’m sure he’s joking, but his companion(a former member of staff) assures me he’s serious. I’mnot sure if I’m impressed by his casualness or horrifiedby his anything-goes attitude. Is this the Fifty Shadeseffect? Where we might once have offered a nicebottle of red and a Jo Malone scented candle to pointparentals in the right direction, we are now buyingBDSM kit for them? Perhaps he ought to have thrownin some porn, too? I’ll point him in the direction ofsome Anna Span when I next see him. At the veryleast, I expect his mother had a rousing Mother’s Day!A pro-Domme from New York comes striding in: “I

need four male slaves for a session that starts in lessthan an hour!” She looks at me hopefully. I lookaround, just to make sure, before explaining thatthere are no male slaves in the shop. Or even in thestock room. We’re all out of those - it’s been arush...it’s the Fifty Shades effect... She looksdisappointed. I suggest she tries Bill’s Restaurantacross the road instead - plenty of men in there!A customer has left a long-winded, ranting

message on the shop answerphone, telling us that hernew Sh! vibe is “lacklustre” and she won’t be using itagain. Ever. I cautiously return her call, and ask if she’scharged the offending product before using it. Shestops, mid-rant. No, she hadn’t thought about that... That’ll be it then!Vibrators are so much more fun with a bit of life in

them! *wink*

NORTHAMPTONNorthampton’s a place many people couldn’taccurately point to on a map. It’s hardly Midlands, but nor is it in the Home Counties or East Anglia. Itspopulation of 212,000 ran the risk of bumping intothe sinister, motionless ‘Northampton Clown’ in2013, but it’s better known for shoe manufacturing,

with the story of Kinky Boots set there. Remember12 Years a Slave? The lead, Chiwetel Ejiofor, was Lolathe transvestite in the 2005 film version of KinkyBoots.

Carlsberg has a large brewery in town, but fewlandmarks can compete with the ‘National LiftTower’; a bizarre-looking 1980s concrete shaftstretching 417ft (127m) into the air. As the nameimplies, the ‘Northampton Lighthouse’ (TerryWogan’s suggestion) was used to test lifts, beforefalling into disuse in 1997. It reopened in 2009 andbrave souls have raised over £140,000 abseilingdown it. Also tall, graphic novel deity Alan Moore,Reverend Richard Coles and 11th Doctor Matt Smithare Northamptionites too.

Mystery

Ann Summers

This new style branch of AS has the pretty pink neonframes to window displays and the compact version ofthe giant black rabbit seen in some stores. This onewas wearing a grey tie as a nod to those in the know.Initially the shop seemed dark but quickly lifted toMysterious as my eyes grew accustomed to the lightand came to a rest at Intriguing. With a white stonetiled floor, dark stands became islands of curiosity andI browsed happily to appropriate music. I wasapproached by attentive, motivated staff, who talkedme through promotions including the Rose GoldMassager; half price (£10) when bought with £10 ormore worth of other goodies. A £10 bag of Buzzfreshand other toy-owners’ requisites was suggested and Iwas even given a basket to encourage me to make apurchase. I was tempted by the Ultimate Rabbit kit for£70 (down from £80) and £30 for two bras/£16 for twopanties deals. £90 Doxy and £109 Lelo Smart Wand(large), 2-for-1.5 hosiery and preposterous ‘TraineeNurse’ costume (very impractical for nursing!) allregistered. Less good: Temptations Britney garbcovered in sticker residue but no actual price, andsome pencil damage on the grey velveteen toy pod.Minor issues. So, a rather different AS experience, butan enjoyable one. Probably the most refreshing shopI’ve been in for a while, thanks to staff interaction anddisplay design, so an easy A for effort here - reflectedin the all-important score.

Private

My notes describe this shop as ‘tired but friendly’, but Ithink that’s mostly down to the ‘sex-shoppy’ frontageas the inside was pretty tidy and the welcome wascertainly warm. Some tape holding the clean bluecarpet down was about as bad as it got, but I couldlive without a bulky heater on the sales floor nowspring has sprung. It wasn’t on, so it didn’t need to besat there. I looked across a great range of DVDs (£25each, 3/£50, 7/£100 - all with magazines - or 3/£30 onstickered titles, or £10 on clearance films - some in abasket on the floor though) while thinking the placesmelled nice. Then I spotted the air freshener on topof a stand, and I saw why. Wall-mounted display unitsfor System Jo looked prettier and I chatted to themanageress as I memorised a £46 pussy masturbator,Cottelli Collection boxed lingerie and ‘World of Dongs’black ‘African Lover’ dildo. Perhaps distracted byweather talk, I’d read it as ‘World of Dogs’, which mayhave caused a momentary pause in my replies... Whiteslatwall with blue edging was a lot less unexpected, aswere posters up high to fill the gap above stock, sensible use of limited space and sense that themanagement cared - doing as much with displays asthe collection of brands would allow. It’s not a shopthat will win prizes, but I left more impressed that I’dgone in, which is always a good thing.

Simply Pleasure

A little further from town, this SP has lost its next-doorrival, but gained a sandwich board over the years. Anenthusiastic door ‘Bong!’ startled me as I entered, yetfamiliar warm wood slatwall and islands relaxed me atonce. I began upstairs, where the pink walls and palewood floor were a backdrop to £25 DVDs (2/£40,3/£50, 7/£100 or 3/£30 on stickered titles) and mostlymale toys. HydroMax pumps with a wonky videoscreen, Fuck My Big Titties for £225 and anotherPipedream Mega Masturbator for £380, plus £10Pocket Pool sleeves were noted, along with a radio onthe windowsill battling music from downstairs, beforeI descended to admire the ground floor’s toy andclothing ranges. Ovo around £55, Doxy for £90 andpretty £40 Corsetti Collection basques, £30 sexyreferee costume (no glasses included), colourful LateXdresses, glass case of ElectraStim, feathered floggers,half-price House of Eros leather goods and a 3-for-2deal on most items all registered. My stumbling on thetwo small steps into the lower back area didn’tregister with the manager, I’m happy to say! He wasvery good, asking open questions and directing me toappropriate products. He certainly knew the shop’sextensive stock well. Thus exceptional service beyondthe call of duty helped a very good store deliver agreat adult shopping experience, which would makeSimply Pleasure my supplier of choice if I lived inNorthampton. I’m sure I could get used to thatalarming door Bong! over time.

Adult Shop

Further along the street from Simply Pleasure, thetransparently-named Adult Shop lured me in with apresentable exterior. However the allure soon startedto run out, with blue carpet showing evidence ofmuddy shoes, leaving distinct tracks around the longstands. Industrial mats were dotted around but alsodid little for the look of the room. Coupled withunfinished, naked wood slatwall, discoloured top-cards above stands and gappy film displays (DVDs £25each, 3/£50, 7/£100), I drew-up a mental checklist ofthings that could be improved. A back room of gayand TV/TS titles also suffered from too much shelfspace holding too little stock. Add a purple plasticrummage-bin of lingerie on the floor with no obviouspricing (though, to be fair, a sign may have slippedbehind it) and you’ll understand my disappointment. But the shop was rescued by a manager who pitchedhis level of interest and helpfulness just right, somepretty £15 glass dildos in lined boxes and fairly goodprices on Sex and Mischief - including a comprehensivestarter kit for £29.99 - plus that attractive exterior.Perhaps I caught it on an off day but I can’t really givethe store more than two stars as it stands. A pity as ithas potential.

Mr Crumble’s Party Shop

Just across the road from the Adult Shop, I thought I’dtry this fancy dress and party store because there wasa leg in the window wearing red fishnet; internationalsymbol for ‘Yes, we do racy’. Male and female staffgreeted me and directed me to the back room foradult costumes. It was a little cramped back there, butlight wood-a-like flooring helped keep it the right sideof claustrophobic as I flicked through racks of FunShack (almost exclusively, with a few Rudies tucked intoo) like I used to hunt through vinyl at RecordHouse.Highlights included military girl outfits for £17.99 and£27.99, depending on their complexity, and a Dad’sArmy-esque uniform for a gentleman. Dorothy, Alice,Queen of Hearts, Sexy Pirate and Pirate’s Wench wereat the lower-case end of sexy, as the designs werefairly conservative next to Leg Avenue or Fever’s. Oneclaimed to be £2 (I assume the rest of the price tickethad fallen off) while others were unpriced. Perhaps anactual bargain was a discounted Burlesque Dancercostume, down from £37.99 to £28.99. Party wigs for£7.99, £9.99 and £12.99, and £4 fishnet glovescomplemented a wall of Hen Party lines (plastic shotsglass on a ribbon lanyard, £1.50) for girls ready toembrace pink and party hard. Ruffled ‘bustle’ pantiesfor £9.99 offered some cheap frills. Practically nothingfor the Stag boys though. Busy and welcoming, yetfairly conservative on the saucy dress-up front, visitingwas essentially ‘nice’.

WEBWATCHwww.kinkycherries.co.uk/

“For pleasure beyondmeasure” is the tagline at thetop of the page - inspiredperhaps by the very similar‘Pleasure you can’t measure’Mars slogan introduced in2002 - though it could beargued that both ‘pleasure’and ‘measure’ in this case havedifferent connotations to theirconfectionary-based cousins.

Kinky Cherries’ cataloguecontains the usual suspects:sex toys, lingerie, consumablesand bondage gear, though wewere a little surprised to seeno mention of anything FiftyShades-related in this lattersection, despite the masshysteria which was stillsweeping the country duringthe time of our visit, whichwas not long after the cinemarelease. What we did like wasa full magnify facility ratherthan the increasingly common‘hover over the picture andwe’ll enlarge a bit of it foryou’, which can be a pain forus browsers of more matureyears. We also liked theproduct descriptions and thestandardised ‘additionalinformation’ layout, whichprovided details about theproduct’s brand, colour, length, material, batterystatus, and whether or not itwas waterproof andphthalate-free - all theessentials.

Other brownie points wereawarded for informativearticles such as Pleasure AidLexicon, First Time BuyersGuide, Cleaning & Care andCouples’ Guide to Sex Toys. These can be found in thesite’s footer, which is viewableon every page, under the‘Support’ section. Anycomplaints? Not really, thoughwe’d suggest changing thename of the section whichincludes details of the site’sPrivacy Policy, Terms of Useand Cookies & Web Security to‘Boring Stuff’, rather than thecurrent ‘Boring Staff’ - unlessof course it’s a deliberate typodesigned to be aconversational ice-breaker!(The site offers both Live Chatand telephone orderingoptions for customers toengage with.)

What was your childhood ambition? To be a professional basketball player, play in the NBAand be famous. Now I realise that it is better to beanonymous and travel around the world as I havesome close friends that have been professionalbasketball players and you cannot go with themanywhere. Our job is much more fun!

What ambitions do you still have?Since I made one of those round the world trips in2004, I just want to go to every single nice view of theworld - so much work to do yet! Also, to keepimproving myself and the company that I work for is aconstant in my life. I have just started an ExecutiveMBA to manage the company better in Europe.

What was your first real job?I worked for a branch of a bank for eight years - thatwas definitely not my thing!

How did you end up as international salesmanager for Fleshlight?I was fed up of the banking system and some closefriends from my home town, Seville, needed someonethat spoke English to deal with customers (the Spanishfacility started wholesale in November 2010 and Ijoined in February 2011). It is not that common forpeople to speak other languages in my country, I amafraid. I was thinking it would be for a few monthsbut I have been here four years already and I amhappier than ever.

What do you enjoy most about your job?Meeting new people and continuing to see somereally nice ones that I have met during the last fouryears whilst improving the business at the same time.

And is there a down side at all?Sometimes travelling so much in a row and having tomake quick decisions - if I know that my decisions willhave consequences for other people around me.

What reaction have you had so far to therecently launched Sleeve Warmer? It is a product that our customers have been askingfor. After we recommended warming the sleeve inwater before use for a better feeling they complainedabout the sleeve being wet. We are receiving greatfeedback for Sleeve Warmer so we hope to reach thesame great numbers as the Shower Mount, another ofour top selling accessories.

What does Fleshlight have planned for the restof 2015?We are going to launch two new Fleshlight Girls:Angela White for the 14th April and the great BritishTanya Tate in May. Because of the success of the Flight,we are going to launch the Fleshlight Go in June 2015,which will be around same price but with a regularFleshlight case as our customers really ask for this. Butthis is just the beginning, we are working to havemuch more and keep surprising our loyal customersand partners.

Do you think the Tanya Tate Fleshlight modelwill prove particularly popular in the UK?We are really convinced that Tanya will be a success inthe British market. And if it works, we could look forgirls of other nationalities who could be top sellers intheir own countries.

We understand you enjoyed sponsoring the2014 ETO Awards so much that you will bedoing it again this year - what are youparticularly looking forward to about thatevent? To be honest the ETO Show is one of my favourites. Ihave been at ANME, AVN and many others and I lovethe ETO environment so much. It is great fun plus agreat business show. Everybody is there. I love the UKand the way that everything is organised. We were sohappy with our sponsorship last year and that’s whywe are repeating it in 2015.

Do you have a particular favourite Fleshlightmodel?I love the Stamina Training Unit, one of our topsellers. The texture inside is just such a great productbut there are many other really nice ones - Flight,Vortex, Girls... and there will be many more comingout during the following months.

How do you like to relax when you’re notworking?Playing sports, especially basketball or running.Something basic to keep going and take the stressout. Travelling is also one of my passions.

If you were stuck on a desert island withthree other people from this industry, whowould you choose to be your companions? This is a tough question and I don’t want anybodyangry with me! During the last four years I havemet some incredible people, some of themhelping out in tough moments and giving meadvice, so it would be impossible to pick just three.I will tell at the ETO Awards after the dinner and afew drinks...

What makes you laugh?Nice company that likes jokes and being happy. Ialways try to be happy even during tough times -always be positive and have a smile!

What makes you angry?People that don’t reply to emails. I have manyother things to do instead of chasing someone.

Which subject do you know more about thananyone else?I know a little bit of everything, not a lot ofanything. Keep improving is my first rule in lifeand you can learn from anyone if you listen.

If we gave you £1,000 to spend today, whatwould you do with it?Buy a ticket to a desert island for a certain period(as long as it has Wi-Fi).

What do you think is your best attribute?I think there are two: being positive and trying tohave fun as much as possible; and taking decisionsand fixing problems really quickly - it is a key skillin my position.

Tell us something about yourself that wouldsurprise us?I am little bit shy - usually people don’t believe mebecause I speak so much!

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve everbeen given? Most clever people don’t shout and show theiremotions in public, they are thinking all the timeabout how to improve themselves and are justwaiting for the right moment to be winners.

And what advice would you give to anyonethinking of making a career in the pleasureproducts market?Try to meet as many people as you can, try toenjoy your job, have fun but at the same timebe professional. It is the only way to really makegreat work on a daily basis.Er
