Valuing Difference: Promoting Equality

The Ethnic Diversity Service is a specialist service which provides a wide range of support for EAL pupils and schools, and promotes equality and diversity. Our team of experiencedspecialist teachers work inpartnership with schools tostrengthen EAL provision across a school. We provide strategic advice alongside practical teaching and learning strategies.

In addition to our specialist teachers, we have a large bank of trained bilingual assistants, giving schools access to a multitude of languages.

We provide cultural talks, multicultural markets, and a Schools Linking Programme to help schools promote equality and diversity.

Our Specialist Teachers work alongside mainstream teachers to build capacity in schools. They provide training, model effective teaching and learning strategies, and give advice on resources. They carry out English language assessments, and where there are concerns about possible SEND, conduct first language assessments using an interpreter.

They also carry out school audits, environmental and learning walks, and help schools develop action plans and policies.

“I cannot stress enough to you how supportive the service has been for my school and for me

as EAL coordinator.”

Bilingual Assistants work with pupils new to English to help settle them into all aspects of school life, and support them in accessing the curriculum.

Bilingual support encourages bilingual children to continue to use, develop and value their first language whilst learning English.

Bilingual Assistants play an important role in developing the self-esteem of children from BAME backgrounds, and can help schools form relationships with parents.

Our reputable training programme ensures that our Bilingual Assistants are highly skilled.

“AA is becoming increasingly resilient to the initial concerns she felt earlier in the year. Her confidence and self-esteem

have steadily grown with self-affirmation in the mentoring sessions.”

EAL Network Meetings provide teachers with high quality CPD, and give them the opportunity to share best practice and receive support from colleagues. There is a meeting every term, each with a different focus.

Our Training Programme is designed to meet the ever-changing needs of practitioners working with pupils who speak English as an Additional Language (EAL).

We offer:

• Twilight sessions, 1 hour 15 minutes at our base

• Bespoke training sessions in schools

TalkingPartners@Primary is a short intervention programme of 10 weeks which quickly and effectively improves children`s speaking and listening, in turn making a positive impact on their reading and writing skills. Children make average gains of 18 months using a test of oral language competence.

As an accredited training provider, we train school staff to deliver the programme to groups of three children. Sessions last for 25 minutes, 3 times a week for KS1 and KS2 children for 15 minutes, 5 times a week for children in the Early Years.

This programme helps pupils to improve their reading comprehension, and is particularly effective for the 10% of pupils in KS1-3 who decode adequately but fail to get the full meaning from texts. The impact data collected by Leicester in Key Stage 2 and 3 shows that most pupils make over 12 months’ gain in reading comprehension over the 12 week intervention.

Our LIP trainers train school staff to work with targeted children in groups of four, using instructional conversations to make comprehension strategies explicit. The intervention runs twice a week for 24 lessons, each lesson lasting 40 minutes.

“Very useful for EAL pupils who are reading accurately but have

very poor understanding.”

“Lots of fun exciting ideas to engage

the children.”

Our trained team of speakers from different cultural backgrounds, religions and faiths give talks and demonstrations in schools to widen pupils’ knowledge and experience about the wider world.

The talks promote understanding of the beliefs, traditions, practices and values of different cultures which link well to the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils.

Our Multicultural Markets celebrate the richness that can be found in other cultures and faiths. As part of a broad and balanced curriculum, speakers bring a dimension of realism that cannot be captured in other teaching and learning activities.

We will transform your school hall into a colourful and vibrant multicultural market, giving your pupils the opportunity to explore and experience several different cultures and faiths – all in their own school!
