What are 3-D printers?

Page 3: Ethics- 3D printing powerpoint final copy

Healthcare has been significantly changed by 3-D

printing

Cuts time of surgeries

Allows printing of organs

livers

hearts

etc...

Reduces surgery costs

Saves thousands of lives

May generate $4 billion dollars for the healthcare industry

inn America by 2018

Black Market Trading Organ trafficking accounts for 10% of

70,000 kidney transplants

China, India, Pakistan, and many other

countries thrive off this black market

China will execute prisoners and take

their organs to sell

Can anyone print human organs and

sell them?

3D Food PrintingHow 3D Food Printers WorkSimply stated, you get what you put in. Food can be broken down

into three main components: protein, carbohydrates, and fats.

Advantages :

• Customization

Custom Nutrition

Food Design

Special Dietary Needs

• Complexity

• Tool-less

• Sustainable / Environmentally Friendly

Challenges and barriers to

overcome Regulation

Food safety/shelf life

Ingredient limitations

Printing Fashion What?

Clothes, Jewelry, Shoes, undergarments

The Good +

1. Consumer independence/customization

2. Fast and Efficient for Designers, companies,

and Consumers

3. Decreased Costs

4. Reduced need of warehousing

Page 10: Ethics- 3D printing powerpoint final copy

Printing Fashion

The Bad -

1. Copyright issues

2. Decrease in manufacturing Jobs

3. Unhealthy Air emissions

3D printing in Terrorism

3D printers can be used to create pieces for guns that can`t be traced by metal detectors and other search procedures.

This allows terrorist to sneak by weapons into airports or other events or places to launch another attack.

This is a big concern for the war on terrorism.

This will cause more lock down on security measures in the future.

Page 12: Ethics- 3D printing powerpoint final copy

US military using 3D printing for

weapons

The Military can use 3D printing the same as Terrorist to cut the cost on guns used in the military

This allows them to use cheaper resources in weapons and other useful accessories.

A down side to using 3D printing is that weapons can be less reliable and less powerful

This can cause the Military to decide not to use this technology for weapons or accessories they rely on the most.

Page 13: Ethics- 3D printing powerpoint final copy

Other Military Uses of 3D Printing

The Military can Use this technology

for prosthetics for injured soliders.

They are looking to use 3D printers

for MRE`s for soldiers based on a

device that measures their height

weight and nutrition intake so the

printer can create a meal that fits

the needs of each soldier.

Military wants to create swarms of

drones for military use

Page 14: Ethics- 3D printing powerpoint final copy

3D printing of drones 3D printers can be used to print parts and pieces

for drones This makes using drones cheaper

This could cause the military to use more drones during warfare or covert ops missions to scope out best way to go about the mission.

All you need for the drone is a mother board and a control center so all of the pieces work.

People can also print their own drones with the proper software for the pieces of the drone and able to build it.

3D Printing & Counterfeiting

Expect it to cost up to $100 billion by 2018

Numerous CAD designs online

3D printing can be purchased by any hobbyist

Most prices are less than $3,000

Page 16: Ethics- 3D printing powerpoint final copy

3D Printing & Counterfeiting

Authenticity becomes very difficult to verify

Intellectual rights violated

Chemical fingerprints are not visible and need

to be analyzed by a lab

Without verification enforcement is very

difficult to enforce

Consumer deception
