ABSENCES: Within three days following an absence a student is required to bring a written excuse from home to the attendance clerk. Or a phone call could also be made to the attendance clerk if you wish (951) 566-4400. Illness, medical appointments or a death in the immediate family are considered excused absences. All other absences are recorded as unexcused. After three unexcused absences the SART/SARB process will begin. All excused absences must be reported to the school within three days of the absence in order for them to be cleared. Independent Study Contracts: are available upon 5 days notice for absences of 5 to 10 days. Please see the Attendance Clerk for more information. AFTER SCHOOL: Only those students who are enrolled in an after school club/sports team are allowed on campus after regular school hours. No other students should remain on campus beyond 30 minutes of dismissal time. ARRIVAL/DEPARTURE: The first bell rings at 7:25 a.m. Students are not to arrive on campus more than 30 minutes before the start of school and must be picked up within 30 minutes after the end of school. When students arrive on campus, they must report to the main quad and lunch tables. We do not have the personnel to provide supervision outside of the specified arrival and departure times. Parent/Guardian Pick-up: No child is permitted to leave the school grounds before school is dismissed without permission from the office. Students are not allowed to be picked up by anyone other than those adults named on the student’s emergency card. All adults must show a picture I.D. in order to pick up a student during school hours. No exceptions. ARTICLES FROM HOME: Toys, iPods and/or personal items may not be brought from home. This will prevent loss or damage of

something that may be of personal or monetary value. The school is not responsible for loss of personal property. The school will not search for lost personal property. Personal items of inappropriate nature should not be brought or displayed. ASSEMBLY CONDUCT: Various assemblies will be conducted throughout the school year. Students are expected to extend proper courtesies to those conducting the assembly, and at the conclusion of the assembly remain seated until specifically dismissed by staff. Students are expected to exit the assembly in a safe manner. ASSOCIATED STUDENT BODY: This is a club incorporated by students for the students. This is the law and will be abided by. Bikes need to be walked on and off school grounds in the morning and after school. Once on school property they must walk their bikes into the bike rack. Failure to do so could result in forfeiting the privilege to use this mode of transportation. Students are to leave school grounds immediately after school, and are to cross streets using the crosswalks. No in-line skates, skateboards, or bicycles are permitted at any time on school grounds. Bike Racks: When coming to school in the morning and leaving in the afternoon, do not linger around the bike rack area. Students must provide their own lock and key for their bicycle as none will be provided by the school. School is not responsible for the loss or damage to

bicycles or helmets. From the bike racks, students must enter and exit through the west gate.

CELL PHONES: Cell phones are allowed on

campus for emergency purposes only. During school hours they must be put away, out of site, and turned off or they will be confiscated. Discipline will occur for any infractions of this rule.                                                                                                                                                            Policies and Procedures 3

Students will be provided with a Chromebook as part of their daily educational tools. They will be used daily in each class for academic purposes, and will go home with the student to use for homework and research. Chromebooks will be checked out to each student through the Media Center and students will be trained on proper care and use. Students are responsible for the care and security of the device both on and off campus. Students will be held responsible for inappropriate use of Chromebooks at school and will be disciplined accordingly. Students will be assessed a fine for the cost of repairs or replacement of Chromebooks due to damage/loss in accordance with the Chromebook Damage Policy. Students with fines assessed for lost/damaged Chromebooks or other school instructional materials (such as textbooks or library books) will be placed in the Non-Privilege List until all fines are paid. CLOSED CAMPUS: The middle school has a CLOSED CAMPUS policy. Students must remain at school once they arrive on campus in the morning until they are dismissed at the end of their last period. Students who leave campus without proper authorization shall be classified as truant, be found in defiance of authority and will be assigned a consequence. CLUBS: EACMS provides extra-curricular activities for our students. Clubs are available during lunch and after school. Clubs vary depending on availability, staffing, and student interest. See the list of clubs on our website. DELIVERIES: To minimize disruptions to the learning environment, items brought to the office during the day will not be delivered to the classrooms. Students may pick up these items during break, lunch or after school. Items such as cupcakes, flowers, balloons or other gift items will be held, in the office, until after school for student pick-up. Due to the different allergies that students may have we will not allow these items in the classrooms.

DETENTION OF STUDENTS: With prior parent notification, teachers and administration may detain students in their classrooms/designated area at lunch or after school for the purpose of completing assignments, make-up work, frequent tardiness to class, etc. Administrative after school detention may also be assigned to students for disciplinary reasons. These two-hour detentions will be held on Wednesdays after the minimum day dismissal. DISCIPLINE PROCEDURES: A primary goal of the middle school is to assist students in developing a high degree of self-direction and personal responsibility. These qualities are learned developmentally with care and guidance from parents and a professional staff, along with the high caliber instructional program.

The Chase Middle School has established the following Scorpion Code for its students:

1. Follow Instructions 2. Accepting Criticism or a Consequence 3. Accepting “No” for an answer 4. Getting the Teacher’s Attention 5. Disagreeing Appropriately 6. Making an Apology 7. Staying on Task 8. Working with Others 9. Listening to Others 10. Correcting Another Person (Giving

Criticism) Students who violate the Scorpion Code will be provided with appropriate discipline according to the Sequential Discipline Policy. Philosophy of Discipline: Ethan A. Chase Middle School believes in increasing student achievement and creating a safe learning environment through the implementation of a progressive school-wide discipline plan and a positive intervention system to correct behaviors that prevent success. DRESS AND GROOMING: It is extremely important that students dress appropriately for the elements and parents are advised to caution

                                                                                                                                                           Policies and Procedures 4

their students about wearing any article of clothing that is in poor taste. To help parents in the decision-making process regarding clothing for school or school activities, we have generated the following guidelines (including but not limited to): A. When the site administrator/designee

determines that a student’s appearance or attire is in violation of the dress code, the student may be required to modify his/her appearance, clothing, and/or apparel in such a manner that it no longer violates this policy. If necessary, the student may be given alternate apparel to wear in order to modify their unacceptable appearance and/or dress. Refusal to take steps as described in this policy shall be cause for disciplinary action against the student.

B. Parents have the primary responsibility to see that students are properly attired for school. School District personnel have the responsibility of maintaining proper and appropriate conditions conducive to learning. Hence, at all district schools or at school-related activities inappropriate appearance and dress includes, but is not limited to the following:

• Shoes – Appropriate footwear must be worn at all times. No flip-flops or slippers. Shoe heels must not exceed two inches in height. All footwear must have a strap to secure the heel or the in-step must be covered.

• Clothing, jewelry, or accessories with spikes, violent, suggestive, gang-style, or obscene statements or designs.

• Clothing, jewelry, or accessories and tattoos with slogans or pictures promoting the use of or involvement with drugs, alcohol, tobacco or any controlled substance.

• Clothing, jewelry, or accessories that are dangerous and/or which may present a safety hazard to the wearer or others.

• Strapless/backless/spaghetti strap tops or dresses, including tube tops. All tops must have at least a one-inch wide strap over the shoulder.

• No bare midriffs. • No undergarments should be visible. • No low-cut tops of any type that expose

excessive cleavage. • Bathing suits, except when worn during an

appropriate activity. • Clothing, jewelry, or accessories that

express racial, ethnic, sexual, or religious disrespect.

• No bandanas, shoe string belts or chains • No wearing sunglasses, except for

prescription sunglasses, inside any building. • Hats must be worn with bill forward. • Hats/caps/hoods may not be worn indoors.

This includes any interior hallways, the multi-purpose room, classrooms, or any other area in which exposure to the sun or inclement weather is not a factor.

• Clothing, hats, jewelry, or accessories which, by virtue of their color, arrangement, trademark, or any other attribute, denotes membership in or affiliation with any gang that advocates drug use, violence, or disruptive behavior based upon findings by the district of: 1) a gang presence at the school site, and 2) actual or threatened disruption or material interference with school activities.

• Clothing that does not cover undergarments and/or trousers that fall substantially below the waist or belt ends/chains that hang.

• No list of dress and appearance guidelines for students can be written that will anticipate all potential dress and grooming extremes. In the case of questionable dress or grooming that is not specifically covered in the list above, the administration will make the final decision. Appropriate action will be taken at that time, and when necessary, a home contact will be made seeking parental cooperation and assistance.

C. The administration retains the sole discretion to make the final determination whether clothing, jewelry, accessories, tattoos, and/or appearance meet acceptable standards. However, all school certificated and classified personnel shall be

                                                                                                                                                           Policies and Procedures 5

responsible for reporting violations of this dress code.

D. Athletic coaches, physical education teachers, or club advisors may establish a standard of dress that is required for athletic competition or other extra-curricular activities.

E. If the administration determines a student’s clothing, jewelry, accessories, tattoo and/or appearance to be inappropriate, the following consequences will apply:

1st Violation: Given a chance to comply – documented warning. Non-compliance results in other disciplinary actions/Parent Contact. 2nd Violation: Lunch detention 3rd Violation: Lunch Clean up Habitual: Wednesday School

**Sweaters, sweatshirts, and/or jackets do NOT hide dress code violations.

EMERGENCY CARDS: Emergency cards are required at the beginning of each school

year and are included in the registration packet. These must be completed and returned IMMEDIATELY. In case we are unable to contact parents or guardians, local people should be listed on the card, and it is important that we have at least two telephone numbers of individuals who can remove your student from school in case of an emergency. On the line marked: “Student may only be released to the following people”, be sure to designate everybody (including parents, baby-sitters, car pool drivers, etc.) who might pick up the student. If you have a restraining order against a former spouse or another person, be sure to present a copy to the school office. The card should be updated whenever you change addresses, phone numbers, jobs, baby-sitters, etc.

A photo I.D. will be required whenever a student is dismissed early to an adult.

ELIGIBILITY FOR EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: Students meeting any of the criteria below will lose the privilege of attending dances, field trips, and other activities. A No-Activity List will be updated and posted every 8 weeks.

Attendance: 5 unexcused tardies, 1 verified truancy

Discipline: 1 suspension, or 3 disciplinary referrals

Fines: Unpaid school debts, including missing books

                                                                                                                                                           Policies and Procedures 6

If you have to make special arrangements for transportation, etc., please make these arrangements before your student comes to school. Do not call the school office to have the message relayed to your student because it is not always possible to deliver the many messages that come in each day, and we want to keep interruptions to the instructional time to a minimum. We understand that rainy days can disrupt the normal pick-up and/or walking routine. For these days we ask that you make regular arrangements with your student as to what he/she should do when it rains. “If it is raining . . . I will pick you up at the following place.” We want to reserve the office phone for emergency purposes only. Please remember that courtesy, patience, and common sense go a long way toward keeping a safe environment for our students. FIELD TRIPS: Field trips are a supplement or a follow-up to class instructional work. All students are required to have a signed parent permission slip before being allowed to go on a field trip. District approved parents/guardians may go on field trips only as assigned supervisors; however, children that are not students of Ethan A. Chase Middle School are not allowed to go on field trips. District approval for parents/guardians includes a TB Test. Students must meet the eligibility criteria to attend the field trip. GUM & CANDY: Are not allowed at school for the following reasons: Gum and candy are found under desks, on carpets, on sidewalks, on walls and in student’s hair. It is costly to remove and they damage school equipment, books and furniture. The middle school has a “No Gum Chewing” policy. Students who choose to bring and chew gum at school will be assigned appropriate consequences (e.g. lunch clean-up). Our school is brand new and beautiful. Let’s keep it that way as long as possible.

HALL PASSES/VESTS: Students not in the classroom during class time are required to have a signed hall pass/vest at all times. The hall pass is distributed by the teachers or other employees. The teacher will sign the pass or provide the vest and the student must carry/wear this when out of class. The pass/vest must be returned to the teacher. HEALTH SERVICES: The Health Office is located in the front office. Students must have a pass from their teacher before going to the Health Office unless an emergency occurs. The school nurse or health aide is available on a limited basis for emergencies. Students are welcome to discuss health problems with the nurse or health aide. The nurse or health aide will administer first aid, and if the student needs further treatment or care and requires transportation home, or to a doctor, a contact to the family or designated person will be made. Parents are required to provide the school with emergency information and to notify the school should name, address, and telephone number change. (Ed. Code 48423/49480). HOMEWORK: Homework is usually assigned to students Monday through Thursday nights. Students should be recording their assignments daily. Upcoming tests and projects should also be included. If you have any questions or concerns please go onto the Ethan A. Chase website at www.romoland.net/cms and e-mail teachers as needed, or check the Google Classroom. Homework is an important part of our education program. Homework enables students to have additional time at home to finish school assignments and allows the student to extend school experiences in the development of skills, good work habits, and responsibilities.

Parents can help by providing adequate time and a quiet place for encouraging

good study habits in their students. I.D. CARDS: Students are required to have their I.D. cards with them at all times while on campus. Their I.D. cards are required to purchase breakfast, snacks and lunches from our kitchen. They are also required to check out library books and textbooks. Additional purchases such as dance tickets, field trips, yearbooks, P.E. Clothes and binder reminders require I.D. cards as well. Lanyards are available for purchase in order to keep student I.D. cards from getting lost or damaged.

The first I.D. card is FREE to all students but the cost for
