Dear friends,

2013 has been a big year for us so far and, to quote Bachmann-Turner Overdrive, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet! Notice anything new? We couldn’t be happier with the complete makeover we just got from studio adhoc. Swing over to www.etberlin.de to feast your eyes on the new website!

Hand-in-hand with our new look is our new artistic concept – expanding English Theatre Berlin into an international performing arts center for the Hauptstadt – one dedicated to English, the 21st century lingua franca, as a working language. With the Producing Series – Made in Berlin, the Presenting Series – Brought to Berlin, the Performing Series and Pedagogy Series, we’ve got something for Urberliner, Wahlberliner and visitors from around the globe.

The new seasons starts with a block of programming called Introducing the International Performing Arts Center. It begins August 9 with a staged reading as part of our partnership with New York’s Performance Space 122, followed by comedy, Daniel Fish’s first film, New Work From New People in THE LAB, a concert from Creatures and a staged reading from our Science & Theatre series.

In September and October comes the first half of Aliens of Extra-ordinary Abilities?, investigating the experiences of so-called “expats” and so-called “immigrants” in Berlin and the Hauptstadt’s rapidly changing cityscape. ECHTER BERLINER !!!! IHR NICHT FUCK YOU is a documentary theater piece with an ensemble of six performers, each connected to a specific “expat” or “immigrant” group.

The project continues off-site in November and December with New Weird Berlin, a collaboration with DISTRICT Kunst- und Kultur-förderung, the arts space in Tempelhof-Schöneberg’s Malzfabrik.

What else can you look forward to before the end of year? We’ve got a lot up our sleeves – with a bunch more from our Performing Series, THE LAB and some groundbreaking work from abroad in the Presenting Series! We can‘t wait to see you on August 9 to help us kick everything off in style!

FUCK YOU TOURISTS. NO MORE ROLLKOFFER. WELCOME TO SCHWABYLON. BERLIN ♥ U. Greetings from the Berlin welco-ming committee in the form of meter-high graffiti adorning every available surface. One, ECHTER BERLIN !!!! IHR NICHT FUCK YOU, especially invites questions. What is a “real Berli-ner”? According to whom?

ECHTER BERLINER !!!! IHR NICHT FUCK YOU is a documentary theater piece exploring the diverging and converging expe-riences of so-called “expats”, often coming from comparably richer countries who travel to Berlin for self-realization, with those of so-called “immigrants”, often coming from compara-bly poorer countries for financial survival. At least, these are the generalizations.

For this piece, an international ensemble of six performers, each connected to a so-called “expat” or “immigrant” group, have conducted interviews with more than 60 members of their respective communities. Every word spoken on stage is taken from direct transcriptions of these interviews, revealing an oft-surprising picture of reality far beyond the banality of stereotypes.

A staged reading of a play by luCas hnaThDirected by Günther Grosser

With Mary Kelly, Ben Maddox, Jeffrey Mittleman and Tomas Spencer

Young Isaac Newton desperately wants to become a member of the club of clubs for scientists, the Royal Society. In order to convince Robert Hooke, the institution’s curator of experi-ments, he sticks a needle into his tear duct to prove that light is made of particles. Ouch!!! And if science won’t do it there is another way: Hooke keeps a detailed diary of his sex life …Isaac’s Eye playfully blends the facts of Newton’s life with an equal dose of fiction to explore what great people are willing to sacrifice to become great people.

Donald Ray Pollock reads from Knockemstiff.

Spanning a period from the mid-sixties to the late nineties, the stories in Knockemstiff feature a cast of recurring charac-ters who are woebegone, baffled and depraved — but irresis-tibly, undeniably real.

Donald Ray Pollock is an American writer raised in Knockem-stiff, Ohio. Doubleday published his debut short story collec-tion, Knockemstiff. The Devil All the Time, his first novel, was published in 2011.

Presented with Hammett Krimibuchhandlung and Liebeskind Verlag. Dietmar Wunder reads from the German translation.

A film by daniEl fish (NYC)

Daniel Fish has long been interested in film – as a textual resource/referent (the screenplay), an element of his stage-craft (the screen) and a structural challenge to his drama-turgy (the “language” of cinema vs. the “language” of the theater). Recently, he made his first serious turn to filmma-king, with the hour-long The Dollar General, a funny, quiet, cinematographically deadpan meditation on economics, cri-sis, loss and change, shot in an abandoned Ford dealership. That is, it’s a movie about America right now. It’s a beautiful movie, profoundly affecting in its visual rusticity, and its haunting final scene – the final shot, especially – numbers among the most memorable committed to film in this coun-try in recent years.

A staged reading of a play by siByl kEMpsOnDirected by Daniel Brunet

English Theatre Berlin is pleased to announce a new partner-ship with New York City‘s Performance Space 122 as part of the PS122 GLOBAL program. Over the course of the 2013/2014 season, we will present a series of staged readings of new plays and performance texts commissioned by PS122. These will both introduce our audience to new work from New York City as well as continue our examination of the changing practice of playwriting and theater making in the 21st century.

Performance Space 122 (PS122) provides incomparable experiences for audiences by presenting and commissioning artists whose work challenges boundaries of live perfor-mance. PS122 is dedicated to supporting the creative risks taken by artists from diverse genres, cultures and perspectives. We are an innovative local, national and international leader in contemporary performance.

Ich, KürbisGeist is presented with special permission from AO International Talent Agency.

An olde-tyme agricultural vengeance play for Hallowe’en (even though it’s August)! Inspired by Sibyl Kempson‘s visit to Aust-ria during Kürbiskernernte (pumpkin seed harvesting season), this piece features a rigorous, specific and completely invented language. Every word is semi-recognizable: an amalgam of English, Swedish, German – and Sid Caesar.

Sibyl Kempson lives and makes theater plays in NYC and the Pocono Mountains. Her plays have been presented at Dixon Place, Soho Rep, Performance Space 122, Little Theater, Brick Theater, the Fusebox Festival in Austin, TX, the Great Plains Theater Conference in Omaha and Theater Bonn in Germany.
