Renewable energies in the service of mankind

État des lieux de la filière géothermie en France, le cas de l’Alsace

Current situation of French geothermal industry, the Alsace region case

Jean-Jacques GRAFF

Directeur Général d’Électricité de Strasbourg Géothermie (ESG)

Geothermal energy in France • Heat direct use

– 65 installations (Paris and Aquitaine Basins) – Production of 132 ktoe in 2010

• Representing 200 000 equivalent housing units (> 500 000 persons)

• Electricity production – Bouillante (Guadeloupe)

• Volcanic resource • 15 MWe

– Soultz-Sous-Forêts • Pilot site • Enhanced Geothermal System • 1,5 MWe

• French mid-term goals (from the so-called “Grenelle” meeting) – Installed electricity production capacity of 80 MWe in 2020 – 500 ktoe of annual heat production by 2020 – Implication in the overseas territories energy autonomy by 2030

Current development • Tools

– Renewable Heat Fund – SAF Environnement’s guarantee fund – Geothermal electricity feed-in rate – Call for expression of interest (AMI)

• Exclusive License to Prospect – 11 granted licenses – 9 licenses under instruction

• Electricity generation – Dominica’s project under study – Several EGS projects

• Heat direct use – Rehabilitation of existing facilities – Realization of new plants in the Ile-de-France region

The structuration of the French industry

• French’s competencies are covering the full value chain of geothermal projects – Project development – Preliminary studies and Exploration – Well drilling and resource assessment – Power plant construction – Operation and maintenance

• SER (Renewable Energy Federation) – Publication of a French geothermal companies directory

• AFPG (Geothermal Professionals French Association) – Geothermal Days (with D-Geo-D – international conference)

• ADEME – Study for structuring the sector for the export

Alsace region's projects • Soultz-Sous-Forêts

– 1,5 MWe net generation/ 4 wells from 3 500 to 5 000m of depth – 25 years of research/ 80 million Euros / 40 PhD thesis – Underground and surface developments (installations reliability)

• ECOGI Project – Partnership between ÉS Group / Roquette / Caisse des Dépôts – 1st well successfully completed / 2nd well to be drillen in march 2014 – 2 wells / 2 500 to 3 000 m of depth/ 170°C / 70l/s / 24 MWth – Savings : 39 000t of CO2 and 16 000 toe per year

• Laboratoire d’Excellence G-EAU-THEMIE Profonde – Academics partners: Strasbourg University / CNRS – Industrials partners: ÉS Group / GEIE – Missions : R&D, observatory and education

Geothermal Development in Alsace • 8 licenses granted – 5 actors

– GEIE EMC – ÉS Group – Geopétrol – Fonroche Géothermie – Moore géothermie

• Resources (30 to 200 °C) – Several applications possible

• Development actors – Strasbourg University & CNRS : EOST – Engineering schools (INSA, ENGEES …) – French and German partnerships (KIT, GEIE, EOST, ESG)

• Outlets – Important industrial activities – Densely populated area – Heating networks

2030/2050 perspectives Aquifer and sedimentary reservoir:

– Projects steady development (5 to 10 / year) – New valorization outlets – Know-how exportation!

Volcanic reservoir: – 50 % of geothermal electricity generation by 2030 in overseas territories – Expertise structuration and exportation – 100 MWe / year for the sector after 2030

EGS reservoir: Technological maturity in 2030 – 20 projects in Alsace and 20 projects in France by 2030 – Heat direct use or cogeneration projects – Exportation of French expertise – 500 MWe+th / year for the EGS industry after 2030
