Comparative sentences

• We use these sentences to compare two objects, people, animals, etc. The followingstructure is needed:

Object 1 + am/is/are + comparative adjective + THAN + Object 2

Examples:

• My brother is taller than your brother.

• The Apple devices are more expensive than the Samsung devices.

• Remember that we have:

Short adjectives Long adjectives

Superlative sentences

• We use a superlative to say that a thing, person, animal, etc. is the most of a group.

Object 1 + am/is/are + THE + superlative adjective + complement.

Examples:

• The blue whale is the biggest animal in the ocean.

• My sister is the most intelligent of her class.

• The same happens with superlative adjectives:

Short adjectives Long adjectives

Sentences with “as…as”

• This structure is used when we want to say that two objects are equal or not.

Affirmative:

Object 1 + am/is/are + as + adjective + as + Object 2

Examples:

• She is as tall as her sister.

• My friends are as funny as me.

Sentences with “as…as”

Negative:

Object 1 + am not/isn’t/aren’t + as + adjective + as + Object 2

Examples:

She isn’t as smart as her friends.

My parents aren’t as strict as yours.

Verb “to have”: to express possession

Examples:• I have two brothers and one sister.

• She has a headache.

• My neighbors have a dog and a cat.

Asking questions?

Do/ Does + subject + HAVE + complement ?

Example:

Do you have two brothers? Does she have a headache?

Yes, I do. No, she doesn’t.

Modal “can” for abilities

Affirmative:

Subject + CAN + base form verb + complement.

Negative:

Subject + CAN’T/CANNOT + base form verb + complement.

Interrogative:

CAN + subject + base form verb + complement ?

Yes, I can. / No, I can’t.

Examples:• I can play the guitar.

• He can’t speak Japanese.

• Can you ride a bicycle? Yes, I can.
