They had been given the chapter name Delta Lambda. How- ever, the official sanction for their establishment was not received until after the Chicago Convention in 1919 and the name Delta Lambda was subse- quently given to the brothers in Baltimore, Maryland. Another petition was made to the general organization by six brothers: Joseph Daniel McGhee, Dr. Davenport Grimes, Dr. Leonidas Crogman, William H.Cunningham, Davenport D. Johnson, and Roderick Badger Harris. The new chapter was given the name Eta Lambda on May 20,1920. Charter members include: Alphonso “Toby” Elder, Jesse O. Richards,Harper Council Trenholm, Fletcher Hamilton Henderson, Charles W. Green, Wendell Ander- son, J.B. Cade, J.C. Cullen, Joseph Clark, Wellington G. Dixon, Charles Spurgeon, Herbert Greenwood, Ira A. Golder and George Reeves. Notable Historical Activities and Events: First President Joseph D. Eta Lambda Chapter History

Atlanta, Georgia

May 20, 1920

On July 15, 1919, a group of college graduates came together to form a

chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. in Atlanta and even held an initia-

tion banquet. They had been given the chapter name Delta Lambda. How-

ever, the official sanction for their establishment was not received until after

the Chicago Convention in 1919 and the name Delta Lambda was subse-

quently given to the brothers in Baltimore, Maryland. Another petition was

made to the general organization by six brothers: Joseph Daniel McGhee, Dr.

Davenport Grimes, Dr. Leonidas Crogman, William H.Cunningham, Davenport

D. Johnson, and Roderick Badger Harris.

The new chapter was given the name Eta Lambda on May 20,1920. Charter

Family Outing Over 75 Brothers and families came together at Sykes Park in East Point, GA for

fun, food, and fellowship

Alpha Cultural Affairs 12-20 brothers along with significant others

attend bimonthly cultural affairs activities such as drama productions.

Annual New Year’s Eve Dance Over 400 Brothers and guests come together for the city‟s longest running NYE

dance annually.

Sweetheart’s Affair Annual program where brothers entertain sweethearts or wives on Valentine‟s

Day

Reclamation Over 150 brothers, many new to the chapter, attended reclamation events with

over 20 brothers being reclaimed

Alpha’s Night Out Over 30 brothers attended Atlanta Hawks vs. Dallas Mavericks game at the

Philips Arena.

Alphas Go Bowling Over 20 brothers competed in a brotherly and friendly challenging competition

of strikes and spares.

Basketball Tournament Eta Lambda brothers participated in several tournaments and placed 3rd Place in

the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc Greek Basketball Tournament,

Kickball League Brothers played challenging matches of kickball and ended the season with a

winning record.

Eta Lambda Fantasy Football League Brothers challenge other brothers for the top armchair quarterback and coach

position weekly picking the best players and teams.

Founders’ Day Events Brothers dined and observed the 91st Chapter Anniversary

Fatherhood Breakfast Eta Lambda sponsored a fatherhood breakfast to honor more than 30 senior

brothers. GA District Director Ellis Albright was the keynote speaker

Celebrating Mentoring Chapters Graduates Eta Lambda recognized and celebrated all graduating seniors from the mentor-

ing chapters. 27 brothers graduated from Alpha Phi, Alpha Rho, and Zeta Mu

chapters. Eta Lambda chapter provides $3,000 annually to the mentee chapters

for graduating brothers.

Project Alpha Empowering Young Leaders Retreat: Over 130 young men. Partnered with the

Atlanta Technical College Institute and Mentee Chapters

Go To High School, Go to College Program has been extended into Newton County and Covington to serve youth

outside city of ATL.

Project Exc2el: 23 Mentee Washington High School Students including the 2010 Valedictorian, Mr. Washington, and Student Government Associate President. A Voteless People is A Hopeless People Registration Drives: Multiple registration drives were held at various locations

throughout the cities of Atlanta, East Point, and College Park, providing outreach

efforts to nearly 75,000 residents. Canvassed neighborhoods with Organizing for

America (formerly Obama for America) Boy Scouts of America Scouting Unit 359: 36 boy scouts served through Eta Lambda and Antioch Baptist

Church Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America Role Model: Brothers Maurice Baxter, Kirk Brown, Jermain Tezeno, Mario Suffren,

LaRon Townley, and Larry Hardy serve as mentors for their „little‟ brothers.

Martin Luther King Monument The Dream: Eta Lambda is the top fundraising contributor to the Martin Luther

King Monument Fund Drive with $1.3 Million in contributions.

Brothers Aide to Haiti Love for All Mankind: Brothers collected over $2,500 for this cause.

March for Babies Annual Support: 20 Eta Lambda Representatives participated in the Annual March

and Eta Lambda collected has collected $4,100 to date for 2011.

Brother’s Keeper Camaraderie Christmas Project: Eta Lambda brothers visited elderly brothers and

completed minor maintenance and fellowshipped.

Gathering with Past General President: Eta Lambda Brothers visited 26th General

President Ozell Sutton at his home for fellowship and home repairs.

Alabama Mission Trip: Eta Lambda brothers traveled to Tuscaloosa and Birming-

ham, AL to help with tornado relief efforts. Brothers donated $500.00 dollars,

toiletries, clothing, and shoes.

Alpha Phi Alpha Goes Green Initiative Eta Lambda Goes Green: 100% paperless communication including Automated

Calling System, E-mail Blast, PowerPoint Meeting Presentations

The Black Barbershop Health Outreach Program Health and Wellness: Eta Lambda chapter partnered with AARP, Sandford-Brown,

and Andis to conduct more than 300 health screens in 15 barbershops throughout

the Metro-Atlanta area.

OPMENT

Eta Lambda Scholarship Foundation Awarded over $250,000 in scholarships since 1985

Project Exc2el Augmented Project Alpha Program focused on a comprehensive mentoring

program.

Focused on academic empowerment through college tours to Georgia Southern

University, Savannah State University, South Carolina State University, Claflin

University and Voorhees College.

34th Leadership Training Institute Served over 100 students with leadership topics (parliamentary procedures,

public speaking, financial success, and success in society)

Alpha Head Start Project (Male Partnership Initiative) Partners with Sheltering Arms Head Start to increase literacy and serve as

male role models for 238 toddlers and young children

Alpha Day at the Capital Nearly 30 brothers showed up to support state and local government organi-

zations to identify concerns facing African American Males in the Georgia

C O M M U N I T Y S E R V I C E

Eta Lambda has collaborative partnerships with over 40 commu-nity organizations in Atlanta. Operation H.E.A.R.T.** Partnered with Kaiser Permanente, Southside Medical Center, American Heart

Association, and American Diabetes Association and offered free screening to

hundreds of residents in the South Atlanta.

City of East Point Health Fair Partnered with the City of East Point to help with their annual health fair.

Brothers provided assistance with set-up and break down. Mentee chapter

also provided entertainment by stepping.

Project Wardrobe** Partnered with United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta and donated nearly 1000

articles of clothing to the homeless

Feed the Multitude** Partnered with the Atlanta Union Mission to feed over 300 women and chil-

dren

Operation Holiday Rescue**

Partnered with mentee chapters and collected over 300 pounds of food and

donated

Operation Medshare Partnered with MedShare to assist and sort over 2100 pounds of supplies and

packaged 98 boxes

Georgia Public Broadcasting: Pledge Drive Eta Lambda chapter assisted the Georgia Public Broadcasting network to raise

funds to maintain their operational status. Broadcast was seen throughout all of

Georgia.

Education Forum Eta Lambda chapter participated in an education forum on the Campus of More-

house College aimed at discussing the importance of increasing the number of

black male teachers. U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan, Bro. Robert M. Frank-

lin (President of Morehouse College), and Bro. Christopher Watson (Educator)

were among the panelist

Eta Lambda Barbershop Initiative Eta Lambda did a pilot Barbershop Health Program at The Menzroom barbershop.

Brothers handed out educational materials to increase awareness of illness that

affect African American men.

19th Annual NALC Stamp Out Hunger National Food Drive Eta Lambda worked with the United Postal Office to collect cans for the 19th

Annual NALC Stamp Out Hunger National Food Drive. The event took place Satur-

day, May 14.

Southside Medical Center Immunization Fair Eta Lambda collected school supplies and materials to donate to Southside Medi-

cal Center to assist students that receive their immunizations in July. Brothers

will volunteer their time at the fair.

Atlanta Union Mission Easter Program

Partnered with Atlanta Union Mission and contributed nearly $ 2,000 in

monetary donations that provided clothing for nearly 31 children
