Eta State Vision: “Voices of Influence Empowering NC Women Educators”

Important Reminder to Presidents and Editors about the Newsletter and Website Awards. Newsletters should be submit-ted to Deb Christensen by March 1. The change in scoring does not negate the need to send your newsletters to her! You must have four newsletters on file with her before March 1 to qualify for the Newsletter or Communications Award. Also, Internation-al does not let Webmaster Beth Winstead know to link to your site. You must inform Beth of your chapter site.

“Start Spreading the Word” About Visiting the Legislature By: Susan Phipps, Chair, ELP Committee

These song lyrics sound perfect for letting our members know that the Educational Law and Policy Committee has set three different dates for Legislative Day(s) 2018. On the following dates at least one member of the ELP Committee will be in the front lobby of the NC Legislative Building in Raleigh at 9:00 a.m. to greet DKG members arriving to speak with their elected Senators and Representatives: June 6, June 13, and June 20. Lawmakers need to hear from constitu-ents who are truly informed and passionate about what is happening to education in our state. They need to hear from NC students through the voices of their teachers, past and present. Much is riding on such conversations in 2018. Let’s begin now to make plans to come to Raleigh individually and in small groups. Road trip!

The EL&P Committee also wishes to alert members that the 2018 Legislative Issues Survey is now out and in the hands of chapter presidents and ELP chapter legislative contacts. Be sure to submit the electronic survey so your voice can be heard in the resulting White Paper which will be based on survey results, shared with all legislators, and placed on the Eta State NC website for the use of all NC members.

Two Selected to Attend DKG Leadership Management Seminar

Evelyn Hall and Tobey Worthington have been selected to attend the DKG Leadership Management Seminar in Austin, TX this summer.

Only 30 members are chosen every other year to take part in the two-week program held at the McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas in Austin in July. Valued in excess of $8,000, the program, materials, travel, lodging and most group meals are paid by the DKG International Golden Gift Fund.

Ms. Hall is a member of Gamma Chi Chapter in Region III. Since her initiation in 2014, she has been active in her chapter, is incoming president and attended the Eta State NC Leadership Development Seminar last summer. She is the Early College Liaison for Vance-Granville Community College with Franklin County Early College High School.

Ms. Worthington is a member of Mu Chapter in Region I. She has served several offices in her chapter, including president, and is currently Director of Region I. Tobey has attended many state conventions and several Inter-national conventions/conferences. She taught high school science for 22 years before retiring in 2013. Besides her DKG work, Tobey enjoys helping the elderly and being home with her husband and two dogs.

These two ladies are the first Eta State NC members chosen to participate in the Leadership Management Seminar since President Connie Savell attended in 2010. Congratulations to them!

Stress is a fact of life, especially in our fast-pace, multi-

dimensional lives. Excessive stress is dangerous to our

heart health. Burning the candle at both ends and family

responsibilities can cause our hearts to suffer. If you are

too busy to spend time with friends and to do things you

enjoy, it is time to evaluate personally and professionally!

As we celebrate love in the month of February for

Valentine’s Day, ponder this to help relieve some stress:

* Have you spent time with someone you love?

* Have you treated yourself to a piece of dark chocolate?

* Have you called a friend to just talk?

DKG provides genuine spiritual fellowship, which is good

for your heart health, so take time to participate on the

chapter, state, and International levels.

Keep Sparkling and please take good care of

yourself!

The new app will have two parts—an everyday app (called the 365) with news and updates you’d normally find on the website but in a format easier to use on your mobile devices, and the convention app with maps, schedules, speakers and more, specifically about the convention. The 365 portion is ready now. Click on the graphic to go to the DKG website to learn more and find links to the down-loads. You must be logged in to see it.

Registration Open for International Convention in Austin, Home of DKG

July 16-20, 2018

Registration, online or by mail, is open for the 2018 Inter-national Convention in Austin this summer. Be a part of the NC delegation and take in the fellowship, learning and the sights and sounds Austin has to offer. Registration forms are available at http://www.dkg.org/DKGMember/Events/2018_International_ convention/Registration.aspx. Please let Dr. Barbara Perry-Sheldon, Eta State NC Executive Secretary, know if you are plan-ning to attend. Also, if you are in need of a roommate for the stay in Austin, let Barbara know—she might be able to help match you with someone else who is going. Barbara is finalizing plans for the NC group dinner at Café Blue Downtown on Thursday evening. Plan to be a part of the fun evening.

DKG Foundation Event in Austin

What is a great way to spend Wednesday night, July 18 during the Austin International Convention? Not in your room! Not making a restaurant search! Not paying a huge cover charge to see a local band!

Join the fun at “The Sights and Sounds of Austin” right in the JW Marriott Lone Star Ballroom when the DKG Educational Foundation hosts its second annual Fund-raising Event. Tickets for the event may be ordered on the Convention Registration form and are $155 per per-son. Visit the website for more information.

Proposed International Amendments

The proposed amendments are posted on the website and will be printed in the next DKG News. There are 79 pro-posed amendments to the Constitution and 43 proposed amendments to the International Standing Rules! You can read them now at http://www.dkg.org/DKGMember/Resources/2018_Proposed_amendments.aspx.
