    THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO

    JOHN

    The Word Became Flesh

1a In the beginning was b the Word, and cthe Word was with God, and dthe Word was God. 2He was in the beginning with God. 3eAll things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 fIn him was life,1 and gthe life was the light of men. 5hThe light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

6There was a man isent from God, whose name was jJohn. 7He came as a kwitness, to bear witness about the light, lthat all might believe through him. 8mHe was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.

9nThe true light, which gives light to every-one, was coming into the world. 10He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet othe world did not know him. 11He came to phis own,2 and qhis own people3 rdid not receive him. 12But to all who did receive him, swho believed in his name, t he gave the right u to become vchildren of God, 13who wwere born, xnot of blood ynor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

14And zthe Word abecame flesh and bdwelt among us, cand we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of dgrace and etruth. 15(fJohn bore witness about him, and cried out, This was he of whom I said, gHe who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me. ) 16For from hhis fullness we have all received, igrace upon grace.4 17 For j the law was given through Moses; kgrace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 lNo one has ever seen God; m the only God,5 who is at the Fathers side,6 nhe has made him known.

The Testimony of John the Baptist19 And this is the o testimony of John,

when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, pWho are you? 20qHe confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, I am not the Christ. 21And they asked him, What then? rAre you Elijah? He said, I am not. Are you s the Prophet? And he answered, No. 22So they said to him, Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about your-self? 23He said, I am tthe voice of one crying out in the wilderness, Make straight7 the way of the Lord, as the prophet Isaiah said.

14mJohn would have prevented him, saying, I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me? 15But Jesus answered him, Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he consented. 16And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, othe heavens were opened to him,2 and he psaw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; 17and behold, qa voice from heaven said, rThis is my beloved Son,3 with whom I am well pleased.

    The Temptation of Jesus

4sThen Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness tto be tempted by the devil. 2And after fasting uforty days and forty nights, he vwas hungry. 3And w the tempter came and said to him, If you are xthe Son of God, command ythese stones to become loaves of bread. 4But he answered, zIt is written,

a Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from

    the mouth of God.

5bThen the devil took him to cthe holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple 6and said to him, If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,

d He will command his angels concern-ing you,

    and

On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a

    stone.

7Jesus said to him, Again eit is written, fYou shall not gput the Lord your God to the test. 8hAgain, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9And he said to him, All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me. 10Then Jesus said to him, Be gone, iSatan! For jit is written,

k You shall worship the Lord your God and lhim only shall you serve.

11 Then the devil left him, and behold, mangels came and were ministering to him.

Jesus Begins His Ministry12Now when he heard that nJohn had been

arrested, ohe withdrew into Galilee. 13And leav-ing pNazareth he went and lived in qCapernaum by rthe sea, in the territory of sZebulun and Naphtali, 14 tso that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:

15 u The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,

the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles

16 v the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region

and wshadow of death, on them a light has dawned.

17 xFrom that time Jesus began to preach, saying, zRepent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Jesus Calls the First Disciples18 aWhile walking by b the Sea of Galilee,

he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 19And he said to them, Follow me, and I will make you cfishers of men.1 20Immediately they left their nets and followed him. 21And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. 22Immediately they left the boat and their father and fol-

7But when he saw many of sthe Pharisees and tSadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, uYou brood of vvipers! Who warned you to flee from wthe wrath to come? 8 Bear fruit x in keeping with repentance. 9And do not presume to say to yourselves, yWe have Abraham as our father, for I tell you, God is able from zthese stones to raise up children for Abraham. 10Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. aEvery tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into thefire.

11 bI baptize you with water c for repen-tance, but dhe who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not

worthy to carry. He will baptize you ewith the Holy Spirit and ffire. 12His gwinnow-ing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and hgather his wheat into the barn, ibut the chaff he will burn with junquenchable fire.

The Baptism of Jesus13kThen Jesus came l from Galilee to the

Jordan to John, to be baptized by him.

    Trinity Distinguishable PersonsMatthew 3:1317

God has always existed as the Holy Trinity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. While God is one, and the three persons are therefore inseparable, we must distinguish among them. Matthews report of Jesus baptism illustrates this well. Jesus travels from his home province of Galilee to Judea to be baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River. John balks at first, insisting he needs to be baptized by Jesus. John insists because he knows that Jesus is far greater than he. John baptizes with water, but he says that Jesus the Messiah will baptize . . . with the Holy Spirit and fire, refer-ring to Pentecost (3:11). However, Jesus convinces John to baptize him by declaring, thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness (v. 15). John then baptizes Jesus with water, though Jesus has no sin and does not need to repent as does everyone else whom John baptizes. Jesus submits to baptism to identify with sinners whom he came to rescue through his sinless life and substitution-ary death. After Jesus is baptized, he comes out of the water and heaven opens up before him. Then Jesus sees the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him (v. 16). The invisible Holy Spirit takes on a visible form so John would see the Father anoint his Son with the Spirit as Israels king and Messiah. Next the Father announces from heaven, This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased (v. 17). From all eternity the Father and Son have loved each other (John 17:24); now the Father proclaims his love for his Son from heaven to encourage him. The Fathers words mark the Son as both messianic King and humble servant who obeys the Father. While both Testaments insist that there is only one living and true God, Jesus baptism shows that we should distinguish the three divine persons: Jesus is baptized, the Father speaks from heaven, and the Spirit descends on Jesus.

Theology for Life We worship the one true God when we come to the Father, through the Son, in the power of the Spirit. All three persons are worthy of worship, trust, and obedience, for they constitute the one God.

For more on the distinctions between the three Trinitarian persons see:

    Luke 4:1620.

    THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO

    JOHN

    The Word Became Flesh

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was in the beginning with God. 3All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4In him was life,1 and the life was the light of men. 5The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

6There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. 8He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.

9The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. 10He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. 11He came to his own,1 and his own people1 did not receive him. 12But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

14And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 (John bore witness about him, and cried out, This was he of whom I said, He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me. ) 16For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.1 17For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18No one has ever seen God; the only God,1 who is at the Fathers side,1 he has made him known.

The Testimony of John the Baptist19And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests

and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who are you? 20He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, I am not the Christ. 21And they asked him, What then? Are you Elijah? He said, I am not. Are you the Prophet? And he answered, No. 22 So they said to him, Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself? 23He said, I am athe voice of one crying out in the wilderness, Make straight1 the way of the Lord, as the prophet Isaiah said.

24(Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.) 25They asked him, Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet? 26John answered them, I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know, 27even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not wor-thy to untie. 28These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

    Genesis 1:23 Genesis 3:7

    4 5

Lord God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

10A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and there it divided and became four rivers. 11 The name of the first is the Pishon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. 12And the gold of that land is good; bdellium and onyx stone are there. 13The name of the second river is the Gihon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Cush. 14And the name of the third river is the Tigris, which flows east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.

15The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. 16And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, 17but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat1 of it you shall surely die.

18 Then the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for2 him. 19Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed3 every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. 20The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam4 there was not found a helper fit for him. 21So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. 22And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made5 into a woman and brought her to the man. 23Then the man said,

This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.6

24Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. 25And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

    The Fall

3Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.He said to the woman, Did God actually say, You7 shall not

eat of any tree in the garden? 2And the woman said to the ser-pent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3but God said, You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die. 4But the serpent said to the woman, You will not surely die. 5For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil. 6So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise,8 she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her hus-band who was with her, and he ate. 7Then the eyes of both were 1Orsmall plants; also verses 12, 29 2Orappointed times 3Orflying things; see Leviticus 11:1920

birds multiply on the earth. 23And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day.

24And God said, Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kindslivestock and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds. And it was so. 25And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds and the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that creeps on the ground according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

26Then God said, Let us make man1 in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

28And God blessed them. And God said to them, Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have domin-ion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth. 29And God said, Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. 30And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food. And it was so. 31And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

    The Seventh Day, God Rests

2Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. 2And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. 3So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.

The Creation of Man and Woman 4 These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heav-

    ens.

5When no bush of the field2 was yet in the land3 and no small plant of the field had yet sprung upfor the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the land, and there was no man to work the ground, 6and a mist4 was going up from the land and was water-ing the whole face of the ground 7then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. 8And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed. 9And out of the ground the 1OrSky; also verses 9, 14, 15, 17, 20, 26, 28, 30; 2:1 2OrLand; also verses 11, 12, 22, 24, 25, 26, 28, 30; 2:1

The Gospel according to Matthew The Sermon on the Mount

    10 11

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of

God.Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake,

for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and

utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they perse-cuted the prophets who were before you.

You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under peoples feet.

You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these command-ments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

You have heard that it was said to those of old, You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment. But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be lia-ble to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the

From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And he said to them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. Immediately they left their nets and followed him. And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

And he went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their syna-gogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people. So his fame spread throughout all Syria, and they brought him all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and pains, those oppressed by demons, epileptics, and paralytics, and he healed them. And great crowds followed him from Galilee and the Decapolis, and from Jerusalem and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.

S eeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him.And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of

heaven.Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,

    for they shall be satisfied.

    The Word Became Flesh

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was in the beginning with God. 3All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

6There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. 8He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light.

9The true light, which gives light to every-one, was coming into the world. 10He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. 11He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.

15(John bore witness about him, and cried out, This was he of whom I said, He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.) 16For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Fathers side, he has made him known.

The Testimony of John the Baptist19And this is the testimony of John, when the

Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who are you? 20He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, I am not the Christ. 21And they asked him, What then?

Are you Elijah? He said, I am not. Are you the Prophet? And he answered, No. 22So they said to him, Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself? 23He said, I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as the prophet Isaiah said.

24 (Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.) 25They asked him, Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet? 26John answered them, I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know, 27 even he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie. 28These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

Behold, the Lamb of God29The next day he saw Jesus coming toward

him, and said, Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30This is he of whom I said, After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me. 31I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel. 32And John bore witness: I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. 33I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. 34And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.

Jesus Calls the First Disciples35The next day again John was standing with

two of his disciples, 36and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, Behold, the Lamb of God! 37The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. 38 Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, What are you seeking? And they said to him, Rabbi

    GENES I S 1:29 GENES I S 3:172 3

earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth. 31And God saw everything that he

had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

    The Seventh Day, God Rests

2Thus the heavens and the earth were fin-ished, and all the host of them. 2And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. 3So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.

The Creation of Man and Woman 4 These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they

were created, in the day that the Lord God made the

    earth and the heavens.

5When no bush of the field1 was yet in the land2 and no small plant of the field had yet sprung upfor the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the land, and there was no man to work the ground, 6and a mist3 was going up from the land and was watering the whole face of the ground 7then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed

into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. 8And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed. 9And out of the ground the Lord God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

10A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and there it divided and became four rivers. 11The name of the first is the Pishon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. 12And the gold of that land is good; bdellium and onyx stone

1Or open country 2Or earth; also verse 6 3Or spring

are there.

18Then the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for2 him. 19Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed3 every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every liv-ing creature, that was its name.

    The Fall

3Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.

He said to the woman, Did God actually say, You7 shall not eat of any tree in the garden? 2And the woman said to the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3but God said, You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die. 4But the ser-pent said to the woman, You will not surely die. 5For God knows that when you eat of it

your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil. 6So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise,8 she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. 7Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.

8And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool9 of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, Where are you?10 10And he said, I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself. 11He said, Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat? 12The man said, The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate. 13Then the Lord God said to the woman, What is this that you have done? The woman said, The serpent deceived me, and I ate.

14The Lord God said to the serpent,

Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life.15 I will put enmity between you and the

woman, and between your offspring11 and her

offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.

    16To the woman he said,

    I will surely multiply your pain in child-bearing;

in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be for12 your husband, and he shall rule over you.

    17And to Adam he said,

Because you have listened to the voice of 1Or when you eat 2Or corresponding to; also verse 20 3Or And out of the ground the Lord God formed 4Or the man 5Hebrew built 6The Hebrew words for woman (ishshah) and man (ish) sound alike 7In Hebrew you is plural in verses 15 8Or to give insight 9Hebrew wind 10In Hebrew you is singular in verses 9 and 11 11Hebrew seed; so throughout Genesis 12Or against

1:118 The prologue of Johns Gospel is like the opening movement of a grand sym-phony. It is meant to grab our attention and draw us into the storythe story of all stories. The apostle sets the stage for the presentation of the gospel by highlighting the main plotline and central themes of the entire Biblecreation (vv.14), the fall (v.5), and redemption (vv.913), all of which point to the person and culminating work of Jesus (see also vv. 23, 29).

Who is Jesus? This is Johns main question and the quest of discovery that he bids us enter. Johns Gospel helps us understand how to look for Jesus in Moses, the Prophets, and all the Scriptures (5:3947). He wants us to see how Jesus is the Yes! and Amen! to every promise God has made (2Cor. 1:20) throughout the history of redemption.

Jesus is eternally one with the Fatherthe very Word of God (John 1:12), Gods agent in creating all things (vv. 34). And as he spoke light and brought life into the dark void of pre-creation chaos, so Jesus brings light and life into the dark world of sin and death. His new creation order is none other than the long-promised epoch of redemption and restoration of which Israels prophets spoke, and angels longed to see (1Pet. 1:1012).

To receive Jesus is to be born from above and to become a member of Gods family, all of which comes to us as a gift of Gods grace (John 1:913), not at all of our own doing.

Even as Johns prologue affirms Jesus deity, so also it celebrates his humanity. The Word became fleshGod became man, yet Jesus never ceased being God. He came to us as the greater Moses (Deut. 18:1519), to bring a greater exodus. Moses provided the tabernacle; Jesus dwelt (the Greek word literally means tabernacled) among us (John 1:14), revealing Gods glory and grace.

The law, which came through Moses, necessitated the grace and truth which came through Jesus (vv.1417), for the law could never save us, only drive us to Christ (Gal. 3:2324). While Moses hid his face from God, Jesus exegetesthat is, revealsthe Father to us, as only the only begotten Son could do (see John 1:18, where the Greek word for has made known is exegeomai).

1:118 Prologue: The Incarnate Word. In the prologue John presents Jesus as the eternal, preexistent, now incarnate Word (vv. 1, 14) and as the one-of-a-kind Son of the Father who is himself God (vv. 1, 18). Gods revelation and redemption in and through Jesus are shown to form the culmination of the history of salvation, which previously included Gods giving of the law through Moses (v. 17), his dwelling among his people in the tabernacle and the temple (v. 14), and the sending of the forerunner, John the Baptist (vv. 68, 15). The prologue also introduces many of the major themes developed later in the Gospel, such as Jesus as the life (v. 4), the light (vv. 59), and the truth (vv. 14, 1617); believers as Gods children (vv. 1213); and the worlds rejection of Jesus (vv. 1011).

1:1 In the beginning was the Word echoes the opening phrase of the book of Genesis, In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. John will soon identify this Word as Jesus (v. 14), but here he locates Jesus existence in eternity past with God. The term the Word (Gk. Logos) conveys the notion of divine self-expression or speech and has a rich OT background. Gods Word is effective: God speaks, and things come into being (Gen. 1:3, 9; Ps. 33:6; 107:20; Isa. 55:1011), and by speech he relates personally to his people (e.g., Gen. 15:1). John also shows how this concept of the Word is superior to a Greek philosophical concept of Word ( logos) as an impersonal principle of Reason that gave order to the universe. And the Word was with God indicates interpersonal relationship with God, but then and the Word was God affirms that this Word was also the same God who created the universe in the beginning. Here are the building blocks that go into the doctrine of the Trinity: the one true God consists of more than one person, they relate to each other, and they have always existed. From the Patristic period (Arius, c. a.d. 256336) until the present day (Jehovahs Witnesses), some have claimed that the Word was God merely identifies Jesus as a god rather than identifying Jesus as God, because the Greek word for God, Theos, is not preceded by a definite article. However, in Greek grammar, Colwells Rule indicates that the translation a god is not required, for lack of an article does not necessarily indicate indefiniteness (a god) but rather specifies that a given term (God) is the predicate nominative of a definite subject (the Word). This means that the context must determine the meaning of Theos

here, and the context clearly indicates that this God that John is talking about (the Word) is the one true God who created all things (see also John 1:6, 12, 13, 18 for other examples of Theos without a definite article but clearly meaning God).

1:3 All things includes the whole universe, indicating that (except for God) everything that exists was created and that (except for God) nothing has existed eternally. Made through him follows the consistent pattern of Scripture in saying that God the Father carried out his creative works through the activity of the Son (cf. 1 Cor. 8:6; Col. 1:16; Heb. 1:2). This verse disproves any suggestion that the Word (or the Son, John 1:14) was created, for the Father would have had to do this by himself, and John says that nothing was created that way, for without him was not any thing made that was made.

1:45 The references to life, light, and darkness continue to draw on Genesis motifs (cf. Gen. 1:35, 1418, 2031; 2:7; 3:20; cf. also Isa. 9:2; 42:67; 49:6; 60:15; Mal. 4:2; Luke 1:7879). Against this background, Jesus as the light brings to this dark world true knowledge, moral purity, and the light that shows the very presence of God (cf. John 8:12; 1 John 1:5).

1:79 light. See note on vv. 45. witness. See note on 5:3147.

1:11 John moves from his own things (see esv footnote)that is, creationto his own people, the Jews. The Jewish rejection of the Messiah, despite convincing proofs of his messianic identity (esp. the signs), is one of the major emphases of the Gospel (see esp. 12:3740).

1:1213 Receive him implies not merely intellectual agreement with some facts about Jesus but also welcoming and submitting to him in a personal relationship. Believed in (Gk. pisteu eis) implies personal trust. His name refers to all that is true about him, and therefore the totality of his person. Born, not of blood . . . , but of God makes clear that neither physical birth nor ethnic descent nor human effort can make people children of God, but only Gods supernatural work (8:4147; cf. 3:16). This extends the possibility of becoming Gods children to Gentiles and not just Jews (11:5152; cf. 10:16). See also 3:38. To all . . . who believed . . . he gave the right indicates that saving faith precedes becoming members of Gods family through adoption as his children.

1:118 Prologue: The Incarnate Word. In the prologue John presents Jesus as the eternal, preexistent, now incarnate Word (vv.1, 14) and as the one-of-a-kind Son of the Father who is himself God (vv.1, 18). Gods revelation and redemption in and through Jesus are shown to form the culmination of the history of salvation, which previously included Gods giving of the law through Moses (v.17), his dwelling among his people in the tabernacle and the temple (v.14), and the sending of the forerunner, John the Baptist (vv.68, 15). The prologue also introduces many of the major themes developed later in the Gospel, such as Jesus as the life (v.4), the light (vv.59), and the truth (vv.14, 1617); believers as Gods children (vv.1213); and the worlds rejection of Jesus (vv.1011).

1:1 In the beginning was the Word echoes the opening phrase of the book of Genesis, In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. John will soon identify this Word as Jesus (v.14), but here he locates Jesus existence in eternity past with God.
