Page 18, The Estill County Tribune, October 1, 2014 Bob Watkins Citizen Chelsea Clin- ton had a baby last week. A girl. A New York Post headline heralded the ar- rival with a question: An- other liberal crybaby for Dem Clintons? Tasteless, but clever, don’t you think? We snick- er (or not) and move on to feeding the kids, keep- ing an eye on prices at the pump. Here’s the question: How long before Post edi- tors extend an apology to the first-time mother? In New York? At least not un- til well after Derek Jeter’s deification by Popes Bene- dict and Francis. In Kentucky, crybaby is a far more serious mat- ter. The idea made into a cartoon of a ball coach as crybaby, well, this rates up there with War On Coal and The Affordable Care Act. The wait for apology might be, oh, one news cycle. A Louisville Courier- Journal’s executive editor hurried forth to apologize to University of Kentucky ball coach John Calipari the other day because of a cartoon on front of the newspaper’s sports sec- tion. In context of a hotly contested political season in Kentucky, I am among those not amused, but puzzled, disappointed and concerned that head of a media outlet took time to genuflect to a college ball coach. √ Puzzled. Why a met- ropolitan media outlet would put its reputation for being nonpartisan at risk with a grandstand play that reflects weakness, expedi- ency and message to staff leaving an employee hung out to dry. √ Disappointed. A para- gon of print journalism apologizes for a cartoon sets a precedent. Seems to me, the newspaper is now obligated to apologize to politician Mitch McCon- nell and a host of other politicos who have been lampooned often and more outrageously than one de- picting Calipari as cryba- by. Disappointed. The newspaper’s UK beat writ- er Kyle Tucker and colum- nist Tim Sullivan hid, then surfaced as apologists. To keep their jobs? √ Concerned. The Cou- rier-Journal’s apology to a ball coach, coupled with the newspaper’s sagging circulation, makes us won- der – is this a prelude to our state Old Faithful newspa- per headed the way of the New Orleans Times-Pica- yune (become a tri-weekly in June 2013)? Turning its profit emphasis to web site news? THEN COMES THE IRONY Ironically and rhetori- cally ‘what’s the big deal?’, sports news stories this cal- endar year alone affirm the Courier-Journal’s cartoon- ist depiction of Calipari as a crybaby. √ April 7, ex-UConn coach Jim Calhoun told a reporter “The one thing about John, John can be- come, you know, a bulls-- --er . ... John kind of knows that. At least I think he knows that.” Postscript: Calhoun also said, “H(Calipari’s) way, one-and-done, most institutions are not going to allow you to do what Kentucky does.” √ August 22, Calipari was guest on WFAN radio in New York. After leaving the studio, Calipari called back as John in Kentucky although he was in fact, downstairs, to complain about Mike Francesa’s as- sertion “Cal is not a great Xs & Os coach.” √ September 17, Syra- cuse coach Jim Boeheim revealed that earlier this year, Calipari complained to him that Mike Krzyze- wski was getting unfair ac- cess to recruits by coaching Team USA. In a marvelous understatement, Boeheim said Calipari was being ‘a little bit disingenuous.’ These instances, coupled with Calipari’s frequently seen whining to officials during games (ejected at South Carolina March 1), show Kentucky’s coach is exactly as he was lam- pooned by the Courier- Journal guy. Seems the cartoonist is the only non- villain in this entire teapot tempest. Fall out? The Courier- Journal has kneeled to The Man in Kentucky. The newspaper has at the least earned reader suspicion of being a Calipari house organ. Meanwhile, Cali- pari in Kentucky is already showered with enough hero worship to get him- self elected Senate Major- ity Leader ahead of Mc- Connell. And, his grip on media is even tighter. Leaves one to wonder what else could this man have to whine about? Meanwhile, we will keep a close eye out for the New York Post’s next edition and, perhaps one or two after that, for its apol- ogy to the new mother in its midst. BOTTOM LINE With acknowledgement to the reasonable-minded centrists in Big Blue Na- tion, I like to pull up an e- mail received awhile ago because it reflects to a tee, my own. “I’m one of those rare UK athletic fans who went to school there, got a de- gree. Too many people care only about wins, not about the coach, the players and certainly not the univer- sity. I wear my UK ring every day. I am a fan of the school, not the athletic programs. For people who love football and basket- ball but not the institution, I have only contempt.” And so it goes. Bob Watkins’ Sports In Kentucky So, will we see the newest crybaby get an apology too? In an intense border ri- valry game, the Engineers put up 63 points and gashed Powell County’s Pirates to the tune of 493 total yards. While everyone loves a pretty offense, this reporter is more impressed with the smash mouth, in your face, defense that contin- ues to stop opposing teams in their tracks (or on our tracks). The Estill “D” sur- rendered a paltry 165 yards to an outmatched Powell offense. Unlike last week, when Estill had to settle for scor- ing on the second play from scrimmage when Trevor Jones broke free for a 54 yard sprint down the sideline to paydirt, Powell County drove to Estill’s 16 yard line before cough- ing it up. Michael Abner’s fumble recovery set up a beautiful 77 yard Chipper Hitchcock touchdown run. After a 3 and out for Powell, Jones ran for six more on a 33 yard run and Estill’s lead was 21-0. To make matters worse for the Pirates, Jones scored on a 6 yard scramble stretching Estill’s lead to 28 points. Powell County finally managed to break their goose egg with a 43 yard TD run and hoped to get in to halftime down only 3 scores. Two plays later, Jones found sure-handed receiver, Deron Miller, with a 35 yard TD pass and catch. A 3 yard touchdown run by Jones on a fake field goal just before the half ended would seal the deal as Estill led 48-6. The second half would not get any better for the Pirates. They would try to go to the air but Logan Ed- monson would have none of that as he picked his first of 2 INT’s on the night. Hitchcock would make it pay off for Estill as he found his second home, the endzone, from 4 yards out. Another TD run by Jones, this one from 68 yards put Estill’s fans in a frenzy. Double nickels on the scoreboard!!!! Estill’s defense put up one more good stand as a Dylan Spivey sack and Edmonson’s second pick allowed Estill’s youngsters some playing time. Freshman quarterback Logan Beckler took ad- vantage and scored his first varsity TD on a 12 yard run and Estill would celebrate another blowout win, 62-6. This Friday night in Par- is, Estill will put their 5-1 (2-0 in district) record to the test with a tough confer- ence matchup with Bour- bon County. The Colonels are currently ranked 10th in the state and Estill will find out where they stand. Everyone wear their blue and white and let’s get behind Coach Mike Jones’ gang.
