Amid new embryo experiments, Vaticannewspaper laments human guinea pigsCatholic World News

For the first time, researchers in theUnited Kingdom and the United Stateshave grown human embryos in a labora-tory until they were 13 days old-- leadingsome scientists to call for an end to the

14-day limit in effect in many countries. In response to the development,

L’Osservatore Romano published a front-page article in its May 10 edition by bio-ethicist Laura Palazzani, who lamentedthe use of human embryos as “guineapigs of progress.”

Cardinal Gerhard Ludwig Müller, thePrefect of the Congregation for the Doc-trine of the Faith, said in an address to

seminarians that Pope Francis has notchanged the Church’s teaching on thereception of Holy Communion by thosewho have remarried outside the Church.

Referring to the Pope’s post-synod-al apostolic exhortation, Cardinal Mül-ler said that “if Amoris Laetitiawanted tooverturn such a deep-rooted and impor-tant discipline, it would have expressedthis precisely and given reasons for it.”

The document’s 351st footnote,he added, does not refer to Holy Com-munion for divorced Catholics who haveentered into a subsequent civil marriage.

“Without going into details, it isenough to point out that this footnote re-fers to objective situations of sin in gener-al, not to the specific case of civilly remar-ried divorcees,” he said. “The situation ofthe latter has peculiar features which dis-

The theme of the dialogue—the fourthbetween the bodies—was “Shared values insocial and political life: Christian and Muslimperspectives.” Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, the pontifical council’s, led the Catholic del-egation, while Prince Hassan bin Talal led theMuslim delegation.

“We share beliefs and moral values,” par-ticipants said in a joint statement released onMay 7. “Our commonalities are much more

Arguing that the 14-day limit is arbi-trary, Palazzani said that some research-ers could find pretexts for far later limits, whether prenatal or postnatal.

All human beings are in a state con-

tinuous development from the moment offertilization, she continued, and embryosof whatever stage, without expressingconsent, are being “destined to death”for the sake of scientific research.

their application in all cases is still valid.”Cardinals Donald Wuerl of Washing-ton and Vincent Nichols of Westminsterhave also addressed the exhortation re-cently.

In a speech at the Catholic Universityof America, Cardinal Wuerl lamented theeffects of the catechetical breakdown ofthe 1970s and 1980s.

“There’s a sense in which one cansee in this exhortation a renewal, a re-newal to recognize our Catholic identity, our connectedness to the Church andhow our ministry is validated precisely

in our participation in and our adher-ence to the articulated Magisterium of theChurch,” he said, according a NationalCatholic Register report.

“Clearly the Church distinguishesbetween someone who is struggling with

solid basis peacefully and fruitfully living to-gether, also with persons of good will who donot profess a particular religion.”

“We believe in the humanizing and civi-lizing role of our religions, when their follow-ers adhere to their principles of worshippingGod and loving and caring for the other,” theyadded. “We believe that God bestowed uponevery person dignity and inalienable rights. They are His gifts that should be recognized, guaranteed and protected by law.”

The participants also said that “our helpto the poor and the needy should be offeredout of compassion and for the sake of God’s

favor. It should never be used to proselytize.”

accepting and living elements of the faithand those who simply demand that theChurch change her teaching,” he add-

ed, according to the National CatholicReporter. “Increasingly we hear voicesdemanding that the Church change herteaching on human sexuality, marriageand family or be branded as practicingdiscrimination.”

In a pastoral letter on Amoris La-etitia, Cardinal Vincent Nichols said thatPope Francis “presents afresh the clearteaching of the Church about marriageand reminds us persistently of the truthof the endless mercy of God for each oneof us.”

He added:

At this point, it is so important notto reduce this great exhortation to beingsimply about whether people who havebeen divorced and remarried can go for-ward to receive Holy Communion. Thequest is much wider.

It is a quest for every person to un-derstand much more deeply their situa-tion before God. When we hide nothing

from the Lord, when we reflect carefullyin prayer, when we open our hearts tothe wonder of God’s plan for our happi-ness, we begin to sense the call of ourconscience, that inner core and sanctu-ary where God’s voice echoes within us.

Here we are led both to a painful ad-mission of our past failings and to a care-ful consideration of what the next stepin our journey might be. Such consider-ations, which the Holy Father speaks ofas discernment, are always best carriedout in thoughtful dialogue with an experi-enced guide, usually a priest. I thank God

that this great exhortation has come to usduring the Year of Mercy when so manypeople are turning again to Confession, the Sacrament of Reconciliation. That is agood place and a good time to start thisdiscernment, accompanied by a priest.

In the physical realm, the elements are effective catalysts for

change. Water, Fire, and Wind change whatever they touch and

come into contact with. Water cleanses, erodes, and enlivens otherthings. Fire burns, disinfects, transforms, purifies, empowers or an-

nihilates its surroundings. So is Air or Wind, as typhoons or hurri-

canes, makes new the face of the earth.

Obviously, not all change is creative or productive, not all trans-

formation is positive. Thus, the change that we all desire for, wheth-

er it is in our personal lives, public lives, or in our environment, is

that which will bring us to a higher, nobler, and more satisfying

 way of life and perspective.

Send your Spirit and renew the face of the earth. This is our

prayer at every Pentecost where we ask the Father and the Son tosend us their Holy Spirit, also symbolized by fire, water, and wind to

transform the face of our particular “earths” and “lands.” We ask the

Spirit of Love, the Spirit of creative change and positive transforma-

tion to show as the way in our efforts to build the Kingdom of God

on earth.

For believers, the only way is the way of the Spirit of Love be-

cause love alone positively and creatively transforms. Love alone

modifies both the Lover and Beloved without destroying their

identities and natures. Love alone brings to fulfillment the deepest

longings and dreams of both the Desirer and the Desired.

It is this Path of the Spirit, the Path of Love, that the Christian

must champion when it comes to identifying the proper method

for personal and social transformation. As world history attests,

humanity can be brought to its authentic fulfillment only through

the methodology of love, never through the force of fear, or through

coercion and blind fanaticism

Thus, a person who professes allegiance to a God of Love but

at the same time espouses violence, compulsion, and deceptive

trickery as methodologies for changing the face of this earth, putshimself or herself in a contradictory situation. You are either lorded

over by the Spirit or not.

The way of the Spirit alone is positive and creative. Those who

trod the path of violence ultimately find themselves, and not only

the persons around them, consumed, deformed, and corrupted by

the brute force that they employ.

THE CHRISTIAN FAMILY: EUCHARISTIC MISSIONARIES OFGOD’S MERCY

Turn to Page 12

REV. EUTIQUIO “EULY” B. BELIZAR, JR., SThD

T H O U G H T F O R T H O U G H T

Ever recall the feeling when it is a fies-ta? The emotional and physical “high”, themany acts of preparation and the details offestivity that come with it? How about threefiestas in one?

Brace yourself. This year the Churchin the Philippines celebrates three impor-tant milestones: The Year of (the Divine)Mercy, The Year of the Christian Family, and the Year of the Eucharist. All three re-

alities seem mere happy coincidences. Butthe question that also seems inevitable is: Are they in any way related? All at once Ifind it striking how positive the answer is.First, the Christian Family is the DomesticChurch or “the Church in the Home”. Sec-ond, in completion of our Christian initiationbegun at Baptism, the Eucharist makesour families that gather around it more fullyincorporated members of Christ’s Body.Third, in the Eucharist we also receive in hisBody and Blood the whole person of JesusChrist, the “face of God’s mercy”. Fourth, from the Eucharist we are also “sent” to

share what we have received. The Christian Family is the Church inthe Home

Don’t we often hear parents ask: “Didyou go to Church?” And what about priestswho declare to us: “We are the Church”.Do we ever care to inquire: “What are wetalking about here by ‘Church’?” The Cath-olic faith teaches us that the reality called“Church” does not simply mean a place orbuilding of worship. It also means the peo-

ple themselves who worship. It is a realitythat does not exist only in the many mem-bers who compose particular communitiesof worshippers or “Christifideles” (disciplesof Christ), such as the diocese or the par-ish. It also exists in the home, in each familythat professes faith and life together in Je-sus Christ. In the decree Perfectae Caritatis(Of Perfect Charity) Pope St. John Paul IIteaches us that there are “many profound

bonds linking the Church and the Chris-tian family and establishing the family as a‘Church in miniature’ (Ecclesia Domestica),in such a way that the family is a living im-age and historical representation of themystery of the Church” (PC 49). For thisreason the Second Plenary Council of thePhilippines calls the Christian Family “theChurch in the home” (PCP II 421).

What are we saying here? Let me put itsimply. Just like people, the Church comesto us in different shapes and sizes. It evencomes to us in the shape and form of ourown families as we profess together, pray

together, love together and struggle togeth-er to follow Jesus in word and in action. The Eucharist Makes the Christian

FamilyI hope you are not shocked if I tell you

this: Sometimes nutritionists do the mostprofound theology. Why? For instance, itis from them that we hear the words: “Weare—or we become—what we eat”. Whatmakes that so profoundly theological?

A woman’s decision builds or breaksher own self and others, her own homeand others, a community and the societywhere she belongs. Her decision to livein darkness or in light will affect her nowand forever and others too. Her decision

to accept and care or to end a life en-trusted to her by her Creator is indeed abig task before her. To nurture a home orto break it will greatly affect all includingher own body and soul and others too.

Flora, a boardmate in college failedthe test of life. She was in love with an of-ficer of the boat whom her old and sicklymother would ask favor to bring her al-lowance from their town in Mindanao toCebu. She got pregnant only to discoverlater that the man is married to a certainwoman. She was caught in a big dilemma

to make big decisions. Should she endthe pregnancy? Should she stay with theman even if he is married thus it would

cause sorrow and may break his family orshould she just go back to her hometownto accept all the ridicules of her friendsand also bring disgrace to her own fam-ily? After so much tears and prayers, sheeventually made a big decision. Aftercompleting all her requirements for hersecretarial course graduation, she wentto a far away town with a sister who hasno child of our landlady who offered to

adopt her baby. She just wrote a letter toher mother that she received an immedi-ate offer for work as a business secretaryand that she could not wait for her gradu-ation day. She decided to nurse and givebirth to her baby and save the homeof her married boyfriend. She kkmmnn3kopted to save her soul.

The stability of a home dependsso much on the strength of the womanstarting from her fortitude in her relation-ship with her husband. If she considerslove in marriage as just a feeling but fails

to realize that it is a commitment and a

The Unforgettable InvitationThe first Pentecost was celebrat-

ed at Seminario de Jesus Nazareno

Grounds in Campesao, Borongan City. Itwas joined by all the Faith Communities, some youths and priests together withBp. Medroso. At the same time we wereconducting a Youth Camp in the samevenue that is why we were asked to par-ticipate without any idea what it was allabout. It was Msgr. Pepe Quitorio whoinitiated the celebration, we don’t know ifit was going to be a yearly gathering. Wewere the choir back then. It was more onEucharistic Celebration back then.

The weather that time was very fine. The sky was clear with the moon and thestars. We were not expecting for rain. But one thing we experience during themass, while the consecration was goingon, suddenly, there were thunders, light-ning, strong wind and heavy rains begunto fell. There was even part of the tentthat was torn and in the very front of thealtar fell the rain water.

All of us, the youths were shockedof what happened. We were astonished.

We feel that the rain was just falling withinour midst. What we did all of us who werein the celebration stayed closer. We oc-cupy the space near the altar and the onlyspace remained vacant was the front ofthe altar were the rain water poured.

It was unforgettable! During thetalks, we were told that it was one of themovement or signs of the Holy Spirit al-

Fullness of Life in the Spirit

OIKOS Sisters; Sr. Clarissa Abella and Sr. Aileen Elpedes’ Reflection on the 1st

Pentecost of the Diocese of Borongan

though we really don’t have any idea ofwhat was its real sense, we had goosebumps. We felt mixed emotions, full of

joy, amazement and question, “Why didit happened during the consecrationalone?” because after the consecrationevery strong forces of nature vanishedright away.

The Call for MissionPersonally, that time I started to

wander. “What is this church all about?”“Why are we in this kind of faith?” Withthose questions I started to seek thedeeper sense of my faith. I became moreactive in the church not just during choir

services and enjoying the perks of it. Inthe search of that meaning, we were in-volved in a charismatic community, theCommunity of the Risen Lord Jesus. Inthat community the participation of theSpirit was very active. There I understoodhow to live a life in the Holy Spirit.

Back then we had a good orienta-tion of our faith, we are ‘Josephinians’ (agraduate of St. Joseph College now St.Mary’s College, a catholic school in Bo-rongan). Our parents thought us to go to

church, pray the rosary, the novena andthe likes. But our faith was just limited tothat point. And the real sense of living alife in the Spirit, there we realized the kindof faith we have in the Catholic.

We don’t expect that we will see eachother in OIKOS, I was the first one whoenter the missionary life. The communitywe were in nourished us to live a life in the

Spirit. Because of the experience duringthe Pentecost we had a deep feeling thatGod is calling us to do something more.

We don’t know what was it, until Sr.Mines Bagas and Sr. Ethel came, it waslike we are feeling the same call. It wasSr. Mines who brought the mission to usas she started it in caring for the elderlyin Brgy. Bato. We thought to ourselves,“This woman came here to (Borongan)serve others, why can’t we do it as well”through the group that we build, OIKOSwas born. We called it a ‘Household’ atfirst. Then Bp. Medroso told us that wehave to start a religious community. Their

OIKOS PHOTOKOS THOU THEOU wasofficially build, it means

Through our Charismatic orienta-tion and the knowledge that the Pente-cost will be held every year, we see to itto attend Pentecost yearly because it iswhere our faith became stronger. We be-came more passionate in our works andservices and build a deeper love for God.

The Influence of Pentecost to theMission

The Pentecost was a big influence to

me. I will not be able to know the value ofour faith in my life if I wasn’t able to expe-rience the 1st Pentecost. It gave me thestrength, the boldness of spirit to searchand follow God more closely in our life. That was the reason that we becamemore active in the charismatic communi-ty. We were filled with teachings, we feelspiritually flabby that we need to go outand do our Missionary works.

At a young age, I wasn’t able to re-flect fully on the Pentecost. But when I

went to manila, I felt different. I realizedthat after the Pentecost, no matter whereyou go, you will not forget the spirit of it.Your faith in the church that until now ispresent. The Pentecost affected my lifethat leads me in serving God. Uncon-sciously I didn’t know that I was meant tobe a missionary and that it was becauseof the Pentecost experience.

Every time we attend the Pentecostwe feel that God is always empoweringus with His Holy Spirit to be bolder and

courageous in showing our faith to oth-ers, radiating God’s own light and thestrong will to never stop proclaiming Hisgoodness.

The Works of the Holy SpiritThe works of the Holy Spirit in our

mission is very evident. There are timesthat we should give talks then we are notready, the Holy Spirit talks for us. We arenot born preachers, we are from medicalfield that is far from what we do now, butit is the Lord who speaks through us. He

knows our capacity and our limitationsbut then again He uses us to speak topeople the words He wanted us to sayso. We do that with prayers.

In our service with the poor, we dofeeding programs and take care of somesick people. It challenges us to be finan-cially incapable. Sometimes we don’thave any more budgets, but we offereverything to God and ask for His provi-dence. He really works for it. He providesfor our needs.

Why we are still here in OIKOS be-cause living with God and in the Spirit isexperiencing His miracle every day. ThatHe can do everything. In our missionarylife we can say that our everyday living, every minute of the day is a miracle, allcomes from Jesus.

We had left behind our professions, when we started OIKOS we don’t knowwhat to do basically, but we let the HolySpirit works in us and for us. We journeyand pray together, “Lord whatever You

want us to do, we believe that you arewith us”, until now this what makes ussustain our lives in this religious commu-nity.

From the experience in living in thespirit and in the community of OIKOS wewere given the heart to trust Him. We arealways reminded of His words “I am al-ways with you”

Commission on Youth: Leading the Young Genera-tion to the Church

 Ma Cresty Tomenio

Commission on Family and Life: CompassionateUnderstanding Towards Wounded Families Nat Bagas-Panaguiton

The Commission on Youth is theyouth community armed by the Diocesewhich focuses on the issues and needsconcerning the young generations. It hasvaried action plans which cater the ac-tivities that will enhance the relational as-pect of every youth to each other.

The commission has different ac-tion plans involving their spiritual growth, leadership ability and spirit of oneness tosocietal issues. Their objectives are: 1. To

provide spiritual assistance and forma-tion to non-sectarian students and outof school youth (evangelization; worship;leadership training) 2. To build communi-ty within youth ministry (fellowship; jour-ney with the youth) 3. To make the youth

become aware of and make a stand onimportant issues (social action; forma-tion for mission; ecumenism and inter-religious dialogues) in coordination withother diocesan commissions and otherinstitutions and movements that involvein the youth apostolate.

The commission plans to gatheryouth leaders and to form a core groupfrom every parish that will establish theirown guidelines. According to their Com-

mission Head, Rev. Fr. Roniel Canillas, this is the first thing they could do andwhat he believes is the most important.Youth has a dominating number in thediocese; their number will illuminate thelife and mission of the church. Youth has

a great role in the parish. They are the lifeof the church today.

Leading youth to a spiritual andcommunal advocacy is a big hurdle thatthis commission is trying to surmount. There are no youth leaders given fromeach parish and no records of guidelines

from the past years. These young peopleare encountering varied problems of theirown and they are driven with different in-terests that gathering them is already abig challenge. Sadly, they are more vis-ible on social media rather on churchservices. However, the commission headsees the influence of social media as anopportunity in spreading the good newsof the Lord.

“They are not only the address in theend but a part of the process, empower-ing them is involving them on whatever

plans they have” shared Fr. Roniel. The commission always asks for the

guidance of the Lord for the steps theyshould take, especially in the processthey have right now to start programs forthe benefit of the youths. They see to it

The Diocesan Commission on Familyand Life Apostolate (CFLA) of the Dioceseof Borongan aims to build and strengthenthe structure of the family and life.

The commission, with the headshipof Rev. Fr. Jay Romualdo, is set to con-tinue and improve the programs to reachits objectives by setting up trained re-gional and parish core group; to promoteChristian family values, family spiritualityand responsible parenthood based on theGospel and the revered tradition of thechurch by providing formation for trainers, conducting pre-Cana trainings, facilitatingmarriage validation to civilly married andunwed couples, promoting natural fam-ily planning especially Billings ovulationTechnology (BOT) to engaged and marriedcouples, holding family and life congress, symposia, seminars, marriage encounterand family encounter; and to coordinate

and collaborate with various groups, or-ganizations and church movements withinand outside the diocese.

“Marriage is a big decision. If notdiscerned carefully, marriage becomes aregret. The bond between the mother andthe father is very important. If their bondis good, everything seems to fall in goodplace,” Fr. Jay said, stressing how impor-tant the foundation is between a marriedcouple.

According to him, the commission’spriority are the wounded families which

comprises the annulled or separated cou-ples, unwed couples, young and perse-cuted families.

“The foundation of the family is themarried couple. Once they get separated, everyone in the family will be affected, everything will change. The biggest chal-lenge of our commission, is how to pas-tor, accompany and care for the woundedfamilies,” Fr. Jay added. He shared how

that their plans would be according toGod’s will and for the common good ofeveryone.

From an interview graced by Sr.Ruby Arellano, the Superior of SistersServants of the Visitation Foundation Inc.,he shared that among the cases of youth

problems they are handling right now aresexually and physically abused children, some are handicapped and abandonedby parents and some are out of school. They extend their apostolate to someyouth of Brgy. Bato, Borongan City. Thegreatest challenge they face is the lack offinancial support for some children undertheir care needs extra health care.

Nevertheless, they always invokethe presence of the Holy Spirit in their ev-eryday mission. In every decision makingthey always ask the guidance of the Holy

Spirit that gives life and strength in theirlives. Despite of being financially con-straint, they never experienced hunger. This is a very concrete example of howthe Holy Spirit works in them.

challenging for them to help the affectedpersons within a wounded family like chil-dren from a separated couple, live-in orunwed couple, and young newlyweds suf-fering from partial separation.

“They need compassionate under-standing and not to be condemned,” Fr.Jay said.

This is where the role of the coregroups and members fits in, also calledas co-discerners, they are organized indi-viduals who help conducts seminars andtrainings to these families.

Some of the challenges they haveencountered are the participation of thepriests since the priests are newly as-signed in their respective parishes andtherefore has different priorities at themeantime. Others are open to receive theformation but still unsure where to fit thetime or schedule for the activities. Oth-

ers are not yet ready for some valid rea-sons. Another challenge is the continuityand sustainability of the programs sincemembers has other priorities in family andwork.

“But however big the challenges are;God never neglect nor abandon us. He al-ways finds a way for us to go back to him.We are just an instruments, though thereare a lot challenges along the way, He in-spires us through the Holy Spirit to con-tinue with the formation as co-discerners.The holy spirit helps us to discern for the

right things, to keep the desire to teachand share our knowledge and wisdom, tobe faithful with our vocations, to maintainour discipleship to help others. Kinahang-lan ta hin paghigugma hit aton trabaho,”Fr Jay said, quoting Pope Francis words‘you don’t to be extraordinary, you justhave to be ordinary in everything you dowith extraordinary love and faith’.

The caricature attempts to depict in a simple

way the theme of this year’s Pentecost Vigilcelebration: “The Filipino Family: Missionary Dis-

ciple of Mercy and the Eucharist.”

At the center is a figure of a father and

mother embracing their children while at the

same time forming the figure of a heart. This

highlights the love that binds every family to-

gether. A closer look at the image shows thefigure of the Bread and Wine, the Eucharist,

which is at the center of the loving embrace

of the family. This underlines the reality of the

Eucharist at the “sacramentum caritatis,” the

sacrament of charity.

Each member of the family is repre-

sented by seven different colors to allude to

the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. Many though

they are, they are bonded together by love and

compassion for each other.

The family is enclosed with the figure of

a Filipino house topped with a Cross to point

out the Christian understanding of the fam-

ily as a domestic Church. As such, the Filipino

family cannot but be missionary: it cannot but

share the indescribable, irreplaceable, and

incalculable joy that ensues from a love nour-

ished and sustained by the Eucharist.

The Diocesan Commission on Social Action –Justice and Peace (DCSA-JP) isthe social action armed by the Diocese ofBorongan. This is the office which focus-es on issues and needs of the society inpart of advocacies, development works, and welfare works.

The commission has different actionplans which involve pastoral formationsand trainings for the staffs, volunteers,

and beneficiaries. It is guided with ob- jectives that aim for the common goodof the people, specially the poor and themarginalized -- 1. To renew Christianwitnessing in the Diocese in the light ofthe Gospel and the Social Teachings ofthe Church (Social Action Formation) 2.To have a greater involvement in the pro-motion of human dignity, social justice, peace and the common good (Advoca-cies and Networking) 3. To facilitate pro-active participation of the faithful in themission of the Local Church (Welfare and

Development) 4. To enhance the sustain-ability of social action ministry in the Dio-cese (Sustainability Initiatives).

One highlight of the office is theiradvocacy program on ecology that in-volves protecting the environment fromorganic and manmade hazards such asrampant illegal logging, small scale, andlarge scale mining. According to Rev. Fr.Juderick Paul Calumpiano, the Commis-

sion Head on Social Action, these kindof activities will never end but what ismore important is the awareness theycan deliver from now on up to the futuregenerations. They have seen the greatneed of some communities for supportand guidance from the office. They alsofaced different issues -- flooding in thenorthern part of the Diocese, rice crises, health issues and the worst was the ty-phoon Yolanda. The office was able toopen Bigasan ng Bayan, and the Botikang Parokya Program which gives people

an access to affordable medicines. Theyalso conducted a yearly Bulig-KablasMedical Mission in partnership with theProvincial Government and the Dioceseof Juliet. This medical mission helps thepeople specially the poor to avail freemedical assistance.

In aiding the communities razedby Yolanda, apart from the Emergencyresponse phase and the rehabilitationphase, the office focuses on the sustain-able livelihood programs. These eventshad been an opportunity for the commis-sion to be able to serve and fulfil the mis-sion the Lord had given them.

According to Fr. Calumpiano, theyfaced problems in implementing some oftheir programs. The communities suffer-ing from ecological crises are reluctant tocooperate with the Diocese’s advocacy

on ecology such as anti-mining and log-ging campaign. He further shared thatthe Diocesan’s advocacies for thesecommunities will not materialize withoutcommunal support. The Social Actionhopes to find people with the same di-rections of principles in fulfilling their ad-vocacies.

Another factor that challenges thefulfilment of their programs is the re-sources. There are a great number ofpeople that is in need of help but theirfunds are limited. The office depends on

donors who wanted to help through thecommission.

Currently, the greatest challenge forthis commission is its sustainability. Thecontinuous implementation of the pro-grams they have in different communitieswill be highly compromised if the office

itself is facing the same issue. They arenow focusing on sustainability strategiesconcerning their projects and programs. They are also planning to build core stafffor the sustenance of the commission it-self.

With all the constraints this com-mission is battling, Fr. Calumpiano gavethese encouraging words: “We don’thave something to be proud of, I can onlybe proud about is Jesus, that I have God.

All of this in faith is working in the handsof God. We can’t stay this long if with-

out Him. Especially when Yolanda came,I always remember Bishop Varquezonce said ‘we were able to pass throughYolanda how much more the little thingsconcerning us’. This office needs God’swisdom to make right decisions. No mat-ter how intelligent a person is, he some-times fails to do make decisions. We al-ways pray to God to always be with us sowe can make right decisions in life. Forme it is the wisdom and the love of Godwho brought our office this far.”

BEC: the thrust of the diocese for evangelization Nat Bagas-Panaguiton

Basic Ecclesial Community (BEC)is a program devised through a decreefrom the first Synod of the diocese of

Borongan in 1997 as an instrument forthe evangelization of people. It aims totransform the parishes according tothe Diocesan BEC model. It has a coregroup, also called parish formation team, that gives seminars and trainings to theparishes/chapels and organize them tocontinue the work of evangelization inevery community.

Some of the objectives of the Com-mission on BEC under the pastoral actionplan is to hold general orientation on the

BEC to the clergy, to organize regionalformation teams, to open pilot BEC par-ishes in the diocese, to strengthen orga-nized BEC by giving on-going formationactivities to the regional formation teamand BEC parishes, to re-orient all openBECs and to sustain all existing BEC par-ishes.

Currently the BEC is not yet fully or-ganized and implemented in Barangaychapels. Some of the challenges thathinders its growth according to BishopCrispin Varquez, BEC Commission Head,

are the people itself who are indifferentto the invitation to be part of the commu-nity. But the program, through the worksof the Holy Spirit, aims to slowly thrustthe heart of the people to become moreactive in the church.

One of the most active BEC in the di-ocese is in Brgy. Bahay, San Policarpo ofSt. Mary Magdalene Parish. The BEC in

Brgy. Bahay was organized on 2001 andis currently headed by Armando “Boy-boy” Hataas, 54 years old and a resident

of Brgy. Bahay. His wife Merlinda, alsoserves in the community as the Presidentof the Barangay Pastoral Council. ManoBoyboy shared that his desire to inspireother people to grow their faith in thechurch is the motivation that keeps himgoing in serving other people.

Mano Boyboy takes in pride of theircommunity’s strong bond and unity in alltheir works of evangelization. Currently, they are involved in repairing their chapelto accommodate more people in wor-

ship, to participate in the development oftheir community, most especially to im-prove their spiritual involvement.

“In serving the community, we faceda lot of challenges, in our personal lifeas a family, in our physical health, and infinancial hardships brought by poverty.Whenever I am faced with these chal-lenges, I always go back to the teachingsand the importance of the BEC. Becauseof my involvement in the community, Ihave learned to anchor all my decisionswith my faith, to strengthen my spiritual

beliefs, and reflect on the real essenceof living in the holy spirit,” Mano Boyboysaid, sharing how the BEC helped andnourished him in his everyday life.

He challenged everyone to partici-pate and contribute to the growth to thecommunity and prioritize spiritual growthwithin their family and community.

• The term Pentecost is a Greek term that means “50th”.

• The rst Pentecost celebration took place in Jerusalem.

• The day of Pentecost shows the coming of the Holy Spirit, you

can read the story in the Bible (Acts 2:1-47).

• Pentecost is also named Feast of Harvest, Feast of Weeks,

and Feast of the Firstfruits.

• The rst Borongan Diocesan Pentecost Vigil was held at Semi-

nario Jesus de Nazareno (SJN) Grounds on May 13, 1989 or-

ganized by Msgr. Pedro Quitorio and is celebrated yearly since

then through the initiative of Bishop Leonardo Y. Medroso, the

former Bishop of the Diocese of Borongan.

• For the past two decades, the Parish of Quinapondan modestly

declined to host Pentecost for some valid reasons: the venue,

facilities, readiness of the people, etc. But came 2011, the Par-

ish priest of Quinapondan at the time, in consultation with the

members of the Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) accepted to host

the event for the rst time, which became a resounding suc-

cess.

• Bishop Crispin Varquez rst attended the Pentecost on 2008,

after his installation as Bishop in the diocese of Borongan on

2007. He was very impressed by the people’s devotion for the

celebration of Pentecost and how people from different re-

gions of the province come together in unity.

Bishop Varquez cited Hebrews 4:14-16, 5:1-6 in his homily.   Beth was so overwhelmed andsecured with the affection, care andthoughtfulness showered to her by herboyfriend Jojo. She happily accepted

the marriage proposal. In their two yearsof married life with their first baby, thewarmth of love could still be felt butwhen Jojo was assigned to a distanttown away from home, little by little thewarmth of the affection lessened. Bethwith a heavy heart discovered the weak-ness of her man which is being easilyattracted to pretty girls. Beth prayed sohard for God’s guidance. She decided tobring light to her husband with love notwith war.She started to call her husbandwith her sweetest voice of thoughtful-

ness and care and requested her familyto accompany her often with her babyto the workplace of her husband withprior notice without intention of havingnegative discoveries about his husbandbut with subtlety just to remind him thathe is a family man and she loves him soshe does not want him to commit a sin.She made friends with the superior andworkmates of her husband and lovedhim much and had built friendship withhis new friends showing them that she is

prettier than the “pretty girls”.The woman is the binding force ofthe home. It is in her stability of mind, heart and deeds that will keep her homeintact, using her creativity, energy, intel-ligence, skills, talent and wisdom to pre-serve home and all her loved ones beunited.

Ching had a problem with her gam-bler and womanizer husband, with herthree sons, with different personalitiesand negativities. The eldest was outgo-ing with barkadas, the middle child was

lazy and irresponsible with his studiesand would prefer to be watching tele-vision for leisure and pleasure and theyoungest was a loner and self-centeredand would lock up always inside hisroom. Ching, a prayerful woman had thestrength and charm to face her daily or-deal. Her close friends who knew abouther problems would say in Waray, “Main-

She makes herselfbeautiful everyday so the people aroundher, her loved ones may see the beautyof her Lord through her. She cooks de-licious and nutritious food so her loveones may taste and see how good the

And besides to wina man’s heart is through his stomach. She speaks of graces not disgrace fo-cusing more on the positive attributesshe sees on her loved ones more thanthe negative side of them. She receivesdaily the Holy Eucharist in order to havethe strength to sustain her and to shareto her home God’s blessings. She is thelight that illumines her home and theheart which flows unconditional love andforgiveness giving never-ending secondchances to those who err but with jus-tice and without tolerance to the sin. WithGod’s guidance she let them understandwith wisdom that she loves the sinner buthates the sin. Her binding love makes herhome radiant that may reflect to otherhomes for emulation.

A woman of light radiates to othersnot only women but also men and sheis respected . A lighted home radiatesto other homes and if all will be lightedwe create a bright , hopeful, peacefuland tranquil community. This is because

a woman is not only for herself nor forher home but also for the rest of God’screation, the society and environmentwhere she is connected to. She must beheard, she must not be passive but anactive contributor of the gifts given to herby her Creator for the common good. Tofulfill this mission, woman should be con-nected to the main source of strengthand light, our God and our all.

Woman you are God’s gift to yourhusband, to your children, to your family,to your community and to the rest of the

Consider this: What do we come to the Eu-charist for? To eat the Bread of Life. In theGospel of John, particularly in chapter six,the “Bread of Life” means two things. First,it means the teachings of Jesus himself asobject of faith. To illustrate my point let merefer you to what he says in verse 35: “I my-self am the bread of life. No one who comesto me shall ever be hungry. No one whobelieves in me shall ever thirst”. Second, italso means the Eucharist as sacrament ofhis Body and Blood. Let me also illustratethat by means of verses 53 to 55: “Let mesolemnly assure you, if you do not eat theflesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever feeds onmy flesh and drink my blood has everlastinglife, and I will raise him up on the last day.For my flesh is real food and my blood realdrink”.

Two things are clear here. First, eat-ing the Bread of Life means believing inJesus’ words, and we have Jesus’ wordsfor it. He declares himself the Bread of Lifeand says that anyone who “believes” in himwill find satisfaction for their spiritual hun-ger and thirst. Second, eating the Bread ofLife also means “feeding” (in the originalGreek, the more literal translation wouldbe “munching” or “pagsupa” in Waray) onthe “flesh” and drinking the “blood” of theSon of Man. That this cannot refer to Jesus’teaching anymore is illustrated not only bythe impossibility of eating Jesus’ teachingsbut also by the quite graphic word of “feed-ing” or “munching” that Jesus uses. Add tothat his strong affirmation: “For my flesh isreal (not symbolic, let’s take note) food, andmy blood real (not symbolic, let’s take noteagain) drink”.

I was told in high school seminary that‘serendipity’ means happy fate or chance. Itis beyond serendipity that the first meaningof Bread of Life coincides with the Liturgyof the Word where we read and listen to theteachings of Jesus through the Scripturesand the preaching of the priest, and its sec-ond meaning to the Liturgy of the Eucharist

where the bread and wine are transformedby the Holy Spirit at consecration into theFlesh and Blood of the Savior that we re-ceive in Communion. It is Christ that wereceive. It is Christ we must become. Forin the Eucharist we truly and more fully be-come his Body. This happens to us not onlyas communities but even as families. Ergo, the Eucharist makes the Christian Family.

In the Eucharist We Receive Christ, theFace of God’s Mercy

I once heard a mother, rememberingthe life of sacrifice she has lived for herfamily, say to me, “I have given my flesh

and blood to them [her husband and chil-dren]…” I wondered if she purposely usedthese words because she was speakingto a priest. But I got her message plainly. She has given her whole self to her family. It is also the whole person of Jesus Christthat we receive in his Body and in his Bloodmade available to us in the Eucharist.

The awesome truth about receivingJesus Christ is that he does not take us onlyto himself. He also takes us to the Father.“Whoever sees me sees the Father,” he de-clares to Philip the Apostle in Jn 14:9. Thereason is also clear in his own words: “The

Father and I are one” (Jn 10:30).It is because Jesus fully reveals the

Father to us that Pope St. John Paul IIteaches us in his encyclical Dives in Miseri-cordia (Rich in Mercy): “He (Jesus Christ),in a certain sense, is mercy” (DM 2). In theBull of Indiction of the Extraordinary Jubileeof Mercy, Misericordiae Vultus (The Face ofMercy), Pope Francis puts it in a way youand I can easily see: “Jesus Christ is the

face of the Father’s mercy” (MV 1).What this tells us staggers the imagi-

nation. If it is the whole person of JesusChrist that we receive in the Eucharist, thenit is also the face of the Father’s mercy thatbecomes part of us. Nay, rather we becomepart of the Father’s mercy.

In the Eucharist the Christian Family isSent to Share God’s Mercy

Remember the commercial about afast-food chain where a customer, havingeaten its fried chicken, acts and soundslike a chicken? That not only tells, in a jest, the message of one becoming what he/sheeats. It also helps us realize the tremendoustruth that follows from receiving Christ’sBody and Blood.

If Jesus is the face of the Father’smercy and it is this same Jesus that we re-ceive in the Eucharist, then, like Jesus, wemust also be “FACES OF THE FATHER’SMERCY”. We must become what we eat. This is where the missionary character ofthe Filipino Family celebrating the Eucharistcomes in. Jesus himself says it to us afterhe rose from the dead: “As the Father hassent me, so I send you” (Jn 20:21).

At the end of the Mass, the celebrant(bishop or presbyter) says: “Ite, missa est(Go forth, the Mass is ended)…” One of myclassmates in the seminary, after ordina-tion, during Mass, wanting to heighten theconnection between this concluding decla-ration and Jesus’ missionary charge to hisdisciples, said: “The Mass is ended. Yourmission begins.”

The heart of the Eucharist is sharing. It is first and foremost Jesus Christ whoshares himself with us by giving us his Bodyand Blood. But it does not stop there. Healso shares with us his mission of revealingthe Father’s mercy.

Pope Francis urges us to open “ourhearts to those living on the outer fringesof society: fringes modern society itself cre-ates…How many are the wounds borne bythe flesh of those who have no voice be-cause their cry is muffled and drowned out

by the indifference of the rich?” (MV 15).How do we respond to this, we ask.

The Holy Father answers by pointing to thepractice of the “corporal and spiritual worksof mercy”. Corporal because they answerto our neighbor’s bodily needs; spiritual be-cause they address spiritual needs. Saysthe pope: “Let us rediscover these corporalworks of mercy: to feed the hungry, to givedrink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, wel-come the stranger, heal the sick, visit theimprisoned, and bury the dead. And let usnot forget the spiritual works of mercy: tocounsel the doubtful, instruct the ignorant,

admonish sinners, comfort the afflicted, for-give offenses, bear patiently those who dous ill, and pray for the living and the dead”(MV 15).

After Jesus, Mama Mary is our primemodel. In the Visitation she does a seriesof corporal works of mercy on behalf of hercousin Elizabeth. Even if we are not giventhe details, it is not so hard to realize thefeeding, caring and other acts she musthave done to express her love for her cous-in and her child. But she also does a spiri-tual act of mercy by sharing the strength ofher faith. It is Elizabeth herself who points

this out: “Blessed are you who believe thatthe Lord’s words to you will be fulfilled” (Lk1:45).

The Father whom Jesus reveals to theChristian Family in the Eucharist is “rich inmercy”.

Would Christian Families be truly chil-dren of the Father if they are otherwise?

Brothers and sisters in Christ: “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me...”(Mt. 28:18) This is the Lord Jesus’ ultimate claim to universal kingship and dominion. These are the words of the Ascended One, glori-ously sitting at the right hand of the Father. We wrote to you before the elections. We write to you once more now that the elections are done.

Several critical, even spiteful, voices have asked us to desist from “interfering” in politics. We cannot. We do not aspireafter office and we have sought none. We do not even impose upon the Catholic faithful a set of anointed candidates. Butit would be a denial of Christ’s universal lordship were we to desist from reminding his disciples of what fidelity to him -- inall things, including political life -- demands.

The votes have been cast and are now being counted.

To those who have been voted to office, we assure them of our prayers, principally for wisdom, that they may discern God’swill for his people and courageously do as he bids. God’s hand is to be recognized in the events of history. Credit then your

victory, neither to fame nor popularity, but to God who calls you to service and to care for the weakest and the most dis-tressed in our midst. Children need care that cannot be postponed. And many women still find themselves in situations ofexploitation. Indigenous peoples remain marginalized and the vaunted growth in the economy still has to mean somethingsignificant for Filipinos living outside urban areas.

To those who did not succeed, you, as persons, as sons and daughters of God, are infinitely so much more than the posi-tions after which you aspired. Rather than becoming despondent and discouraged, you should challenge yourselves byasking how it is that the Risen Lord sends you “to make disciples of all nations”. Surely there are so many other ways tocontribute to the building of the Kingdom of God. It is for you to discover your paths, in faith and in docility to God’s spirit.

The greatest promise the Church can offer any government is vigilant collaboration, and that offer, we make now. We willurge our people to work with the government for the good of all, and we shall continue to be vigilant so that ever so oftenwe may speak out to teach and to prophesy, to admonish and to correct -- for this is our vocation.

Get up now let us go…
