by Rex Clementine (Island.lk) - Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews paid a glowing tribute to former great Aravinda de Silva yesterday crediting him as the man behind the national cricket team’s recent success. Aravinda heads SLC’s Cricket Committee, the arm that advises the board on cricketing matters. Although the former great has been urged to get actively involved in the administration of the game, business interests make him not to take up a full time role. SLC hierarchy virtually seek Aravinda’s expertise on important matters. High Performance Manager Simon Wills and Fielding Coach Nic Pothas were hired by SLC only after Aravinda interviewed the candidates and gave the green light. "Aravinda is the man behind the scenes. He doesn’t get much recognition but I think he’s done a splendid job in getting all the coaches down and trying to fix up this whole structure. It’s just the start of it," Mathews told journalists yesterday. Another former captain Sanath Jayasuriya heads the national selection panel and the combination of Aravinda and Jayasuriya has helped Sri Lanka to rebuild after the high profile retirements of former captains Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene. Sri Lanka head to the five match ODI series against Australia starting today at R. Premadasa Stadium hoping to continue the momentum after victory in the Test series. "The Aussies are a very competitive team, inside and outside of Australia. We have to play our best cricket to beat them. I think we did that in the Test series. Now it’s a fresh start. We’ve got some new faces joining the squad for the ODIs. It’s going to be a zero start for both teams," Mathews said. The hosts have two uncapped players in left-arm spinner Amila Aponso and opener Avishka Fernando. Both Moratuwa boys are products of De La Salle Brothers, who until recently administered St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa. "I haven’t seen them much of those players, but the selectors have," Mathews said. "Avishka looked really good during training. As we are playing at home we have the advantage of bringing in an under-19 player to share the dressing room with the likes of Dilshans and Chandimals," Mathews added. Mathews elaborated on the team management’s idea to give promising under-19 players exposure at the highest level. "We will try to give an under-19 player exposure by getting him to the senior squad. They are the ones who will play in future. We will bring an extra player to give that experience and we have that opportunity when we play at home. That’s our main idea, but if there’s a chance he’ll play as well." (FT.LK) - President Maithripala Sirisena said his Government had restored freedom and democracy in the country and promised to end economic instability in the country as the ruling national unity coalition marked its first year in office with a massive rally in Matara. Large crowds gathered at the Kotuwegoda Sanath Jayasuriya stadium in Matara for the commemoration event which Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe also attended. A fired up President Sirisena also threatened the members of the pro Rajapaksa ‘Joint Opposition’ saying he would expose their lies and corruption that would leave them with no choice but to keep walking the streets. “Some people say they will make new parties. Let them try. The day they do the extent of their thuggery, corruption and lies will be exposed. All the secrets that have been hidden till now will be exposed on that day. Then all they will be able to do is to walk the streets,” President Sirisena charged, in reference to the JO Paada Yaatra held two weeks ago, as the crisis within the SLFP deepened this week. President Sirisena said there were those who were dreaming of building a new Government, but assured the crowds that the unity coalition would rule for the next five years. “We shall see who will govern after 2020,” he taunted. The President vowed that he would never permit thieves and brigands to govern Sri Lanka again. He warned his own Government members that corruption would not be tolerated. “We will not allow them to be corrupt. If they get caught we will punish them worse than the others,” the President vowed. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe who also addressed the rally said the Government that was elected into office in August 2015 had inherited a “garbage dump.” “A family and its associates had destroyed the country. That is the country that we were left to pick up. Under the former regime the country had fallen behind drastically,” the Prime Minister charged. He said the National Government had been created to rebuild a fallen nation. “Today we are building a new country. A country that was destroyed by war is being rebuilt. When we mark our second year in office, the country will be in a much better place,” he pledged. The Prime Minister said that the two main political parties in the country had decided not to be rivals and to govern together to show the world that Sri Lanka was not a failure. Both leaders hit out against the former President, reasserting their commitment to national security. Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said he was not the one who struck deals with the LTTE to win an election. “I thought it would be better to stay in opposition than make deals with the LTTE. So who is the traitor? The person who made deals with the LTTE or the person who didn’t?” he charged, speaking openly about well known secret about the 2005 presidential election ....SEE P10 WE CARRY THE BROADEST SELECTION OF SL NEWS FOR THE BROADEST CROSS-SECTION OF SRI LANKANS N EWSLANKA N EWSLANKA Established since . . By Ruwan Laknath Jayakody(nation.lk) Local scientists have warned that theauthentic Veddas were in grave danger of beingwiped out from a catastrophic event such as aninfectious disease or specific virus, due to theirlack of genetic diversity as a result of inbreeding.Local forensic geneticists and molecularanthropologists urged the Government toestablish a mechanism to ensure that theauthentic Veddas are attended to, well cared forand maintained, and their genetic makeup(genome) is preserved without them beingexposed unnecessarily. A research study hasbeen conducted by Head of the MolecularForensics Section at Genetech MolecularDiagnostics, Sri Lanka, Dr. Ruwan J. Illeperumato ascertain how the genetic genealogy of theVeddas of Sri Lanka evolved. The study has been done in the light of variouspopulation groups in Sri Lanka using thebiological samples from a crowd from among thevarious ethnic groups including the Veddas, theSinhalese, the Sri Lankan Tamils, the IndianTamils and the Moors, selected after reviewingtheir genetic pedigree as far back as severalgenerations.

Two markers in the human genome have beenused in the study. The two include the maternaland paternal lineage, in cases where thematernal and paternal lineage has remainedunchanged due to inbreeding. This essentiallyrefers to cases where there has been noabsorption of genes to the general geneticmarkers by way of intermixing with several otherpopulation groups. The Veddas in this group thereby have thedistinction of being identified as authenticVeddas as opposed to the Vedda community inDambana, off Mahiyangana who are mainlythose who have intermixed with the Sinhaleseand the Tamils and thus have had their geneticmakeup diluted to a certain extent due to theintermixing of genes and are therefore notauthentic Veddas. Such present day Veddaindividuals have been traced through keytechniques such as looking for possible effectsfrom intermixing and their genetic signatures, and have thus been found to possess a uniquegenetic signature.Dr. Illeperuma explained that such authenticVeddas are currently found in other small highlyisolated pocket areas in Henanigala, which is

before Maha Oya,Rathugala, which isbetween Bibile andAmpara, andPolonnaruwa, addingthat the generalpopulous wouldhowever not be ableto identify them asVeddas.Due to inbreedingmost suffer fromgenetic disorders, hepointed out, addingthat young childrenespecially were andare suffering fromvision impairments, speech impediments, defects in limbs anddefects in the fingersof their hands.

(sundaytimes.lk)UNESCO Director General IrinaBokova visited the Sigiriya Rock Fortress thisweek and left a message on a replica of the famed“Mirror Wall” at the nearby museum dedicated tothe UNESCO World Heritage Site.Ms Bokova, who was in Sri Lanka on a four-dayvisit that ended on Wednesday, was dragged intoa minor controversy after media reports impliedthat she had made a reference to the possibledelisting of the Dambulla Temple over newconstructions added to the historic site by a

resident monk.It was later clarified, however, that a number ofrecommendations have been made to theGovernment to improve the conservation andmanagement of the site — and that there was noimmediate danger of striking the Dambulla Templeoff the World Heritage list.UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee at itsrecently-concluded session in Istanbul, Turkey, has, however, expressed “serious concern” about, among other things, the failure to implement anagreed management plan for the DambullaTemple. A management committee comprisingrelevant Government authorities and DambullaTemple’s chief monks will be set up soon, aspokesperson for UNESCO in Colombo said. Picby Kanchana Kumara Ariyadasa

(island.lk) Cinnamon is an ancient spice whichwas discovered as far back as 4,000 years ago.Sri Lanka is the main producer of cinnamon tothe world market, and the best quality cinnamonis often referred to as Ceylon Cinnamon. However, the uses of cinnamon for culinary aswell as other purposes are well documented.Right from being used by the Egyptians for theembalmment procedure to the modern dayAmerican kids using cinnamon powder to top uptheir breakfast cereal, cinnamon has come a longway.Cinnamon has been most popular as a culinaryspice for adding the sweet spicy flavour todishes. It is mostly used in dessert preparationssuch as pastries, rolls etc. and is particularly likedbecause of its mouth-watering fragrance andexotic taste. Cinnamon has also often been usedas a substitute for sugar. However, apart fromlending any dish a subtle sweet yet spicy flavourand a wonderful aroma, cinnamon also comeswith its own set of nutrients which make it adelicious, yet healthy spice.

Cinnamon is derived from thebark of tree. The best and mostpopular form in which cinnamonis used is in the form ofcinnamon powder. Being aspice, it is a popular ingredientin the kitchen to add flavour and taste. However, cinnamon also contains carbohydrates, proteins, healthy fats and a good amount of energy. Some of the ways in which cinnamon can benefityour body are:

Cinnamon is one of the best foods to detoxify thebody of all the waste and toxins and cleanse theblood. It also prevents "free radical" damagewhich occurs due to oxidative reactions inside thebody, which causes even the healthy cells to getdamaged. "Free radical" damage is the maincause for ageing of the skin and in extremecases it can even cause cancer. Needless to say,the polyphenols present in cinnamon are suchstrong antioxidants that cinnamon has been saidto be a power food even more beneficial thannatural anti-oxidant foods like garlic and greentea.

Although the taste of cinnamon is a sweet-spicyone, cinnamon actually does not contain anysugar. In fact, cinnamon is often used as asubstitute for powdered sugar by diabetics orthose who are more health conscious. Cinnamoncontrols the level of sugar in the blood by makingsure that the stomach empties out slowly. Thisensures that the glucose is released into the

blood slowly so that the person starts feelinghungry after a longer period of time. Moreover, cinnamon also increases the body’s sensitivity tothe insulin produced.

Cardiovascular diseases are mostly associatedwith a weakened heart or clogged up arteries. The anti oxidant function of cinnamon ensuresthat the arteries remain healthy and the bloodremains flowing smoothly. Moreover, heartproblems often occur because of high sugarlevels in the body which cause tissue damage aswell as inflammation. This in turn negativelyaffects the arteries and causes them to harden, thus affecting the blood flow. However, the anti-oxidants present in Cinnamon have been provento be effective towards preventing tissue damageas well as inflammation and regulating the bloodsugar levels.

Studies have even proven that Cinnamon has apositive effect on the functioning of the brain byimproving the cognitive processing and even

boosting the attention spansand visual motor responses. Ithas also been said that afteran intensive brain surgery ortrauma experienced by thepatient, cinnamon has beenhelpful in repairing the braincells. Apart from this,

cinnamon is also a great comfort food and caninstantly lift your spirits up.Cinnamon Can Prevent and Aid in Curing CancerAlthough it has still not been confirmed, studiesare underway which have shown cinnamon to bealmost toxic for cancer cells. Cinnamon can notonly prevent cancer by inhibiting unnaturalgrowth of cells but it can even stop formation ofblood vessels in the cancerous cells andultimately cause cell death. It has proven to beespecially beneficial for colon cancer.

Cinnamon rolls are sure to be a favouritebreakfast item for most people. However, thereare many healthier ways how you can make useof this flavourful spice. The following are justsome of the tips you can follow in the kitchen:

Cinnamon can also add a touch of flavour andaroma to the otherwise bland oatmeal or wholewheat cereal.Cinnamon can even be mixed inwith some sweet bread spreads like butter,peanut-butter etc. or sprinkled on top of the toastseparately. Cinnamon can be used to sprinkle onany dessert made with chocolate or vanilla.Freshly cut fruits, especially berries also tastegreat with a dash of cinnamon powder.(Indiadivine)

This is not a fair electionpractice,” he said during the Asian ElectoralStakeholder Forum III at the Discovery KartikaPlaza Hotel in Bali.According to Magbual, political parties’

weaknesses could be clearly seen in thePhilippines, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh andCambodia, citing as an example that politicians inthe Philippines changed political parties “as fast asthey change their clothes”.“This practice is bad. Political parties aresupposed to define policies and propose programs

It is time they learnt to operate in anera of democracy in which there is an electedgovernment in the province, he said. The ChiefMinister pointed out that officials even manipulatesurveys to suit the wishes of the Centralgovernment. In a survey of war widows, officialstold the widows not to say that their husbands haddied due to the war but of some natural cause. The Chief Minister made it very clear that theprovincial administration would not welcome large, capital intensive, projects in which the locals willonly be hewers of wood and drawers of water.”Wewill not allow outsiders to rule over us and will not

allow our resources to be looted,” he said. The most appropriate plan for his province will beto encourage small and medium scale industriesmaking use of locally available material andinvolving local people organized in cooperatives,Wgneswarn said.Since most people are engaged in agriculture andfishing in the province, stress should be on these

two sectors. Since the educatedyouth of the North are showingan interest in computer scienceand communication technology,“back offices” could be created toengage these youth.Wigneswaran further said thatsince one of the aims of thedevelopment process is to effectnational reconciliation, in thebackdrop of three decades of

war, efforts should be made to implement the jointUS-Sri Lanka resolution of the UN Human RightsCouncil passed last year which called for thesetting up of credible mechanisms to ensureaccountability. If the government takes the steps outlined by him,the Northern Province would extend its fullestcooperation to the Central government’s projects,Wigneswaran assured.Significantly, Wigneswaran had boycotted theinauguration of the International Investment Forumin Jaffna organized by the provincial Governor,Reginold Cooray, on the grounds that the forumwas planned without consulting him or hisadministration or even doing a proper survey ofthe felt-needs of the people of the province.(Colombo Gazette)

Dr S W Premaratne Attorney-at-Law(dailynews.lk) The United Nations HighCommissioner on Human Rights, in presenting hisupdate in June 2016, regarding the progress so farmade by the government of Sri Lanka inimplementing the resolution 30/1 adopted by theHuman Rights Council inGeneva made brief referenceto some actions already taken. The steps taken by the SriLankan government such asthe adoption of the 19thAmendment to theConstitution, identification andrelease of about 6,000 acresof civilian lands in the Northand East which were held bythe military, in 2015 and 2016,securing the release of someindividuals detained under the PTA andpreparation of draft legislation to establish theOffice of Missing Persons were appreciated andcommended by the High Commissioner. There is no doubt that the initiatives already takenby the Sri Lankan government, specially after thechange of government in 2015, makes a positivecontribution for restoration of good governance

and addressing some of the most burning issuesof the Tamil community in the North and East. Theincumbent government – the national unitygovernment – has shown the political will be takingthese steps, to promote reconciliation and finallyachieve the desired durable peace for the country.

The need for holding aninquiry regarding theallegations of war crimesagainst the Sri Lankanmilitary forces, according toresolution 30/1, has becomea very controversial issue. Iam attempting in this articleto explain why it isnecessary to hold asimpartial and credibleinvestigation regarding thealleged war crimes during

the last stage of the war and its relevance to thepost-war reconciliation process. In the resolutionsof the United Nations Human Rights Council inGeneva, relating to Sri Lanka after the war, thereis reference to a series of crimes against humanityand violations of humanitarian law which amountto war crimes.

( ) The people in the North want theNavy to remain there in order to prevent theSouth Indian fishermen from encroaching into SriLankan waters, a Tamil politician said today.Minister of National Integration, Reconciliationand Languages Mano Ganesan, who was thechief guest at the launch of the Sinhalatranslation of InternationalHuman Rights Charter byHemachnadra Pathirana inColombo said the Northernpeople whom he met recentlyhad informed him that theywant the Navy to remain in theNorth.“When I visited the Northrecently the people there want the Navy toremain. When I asked them why they said this isbecause the Navy could prevent the South Indian

fishermen from stealing fish from Sri Lankanwaters,” the Minister said.“I think the country should be aware of thesesentiments of the Northern people,” he added.“At the same time the Minister said the membersof the security forces who had done wrongshould be penalised. “A Security Force in any

country when engaged in a war tendsto commit offences. The Indian PeaceKeeping Forces also committedoffences and so did the Americanforces in countries such as Iraq. Alsofew members of the Sri Lankansecurity forces have also committedwrong doings in the war,” he said“Therefore those members of the Sri

Lankan security forces who had done wrongshould be penalised. One cannot disperse thearmy or penalise the entire force just because

some have done wrong. You don’t dissolveParliament just because few MPs are corrupt,”the Minister further said.Minister Ganesan said some including the thenformer President Mahinda Rajapaksa are talkingof betraying the Sri Lankan security forces todayforgetting what he did in the past. He said it wasthe former President who went to Geneva callingfor action against the disappearances and killingsin 1987/89. The Minister said former Presidentactually went to Geneva against the securityforces.Mr. Ganesan was critical of the TNA MPs as wellstating that they fled the country during the lastregime without fighting for rights. “It was I whofought against extra judicial killings anddisappearances together with some Sinhaleseleaders when all the TNA MPs fled the country,”he said. (colombogazette.com) The Justice MaxwellParanagama Commission which went into theissue of missing persons and violations of HumanRights and International Humanitarian Law in thelast brutal phase of Eelam War IV, hasrecommended the establishment of a domestic, allSri Lankan, Judicial Mechanism to investigate andtry cases of violation, and also a Truth andReconciliation Commission which could give“accountable amnesty” to those who pleaded guiltyand expressed remorse, the New Indian Expressreported.Speaking to Express on Sunday, JusticeParanagama said that if anyone is charged forviolations of Human Rights or InternationalHumanitarian Law, he should be tried by a SpecialHigh Court. Cases should be conducted by SriLanka’s Attorney General; heard by Sri Lankanjudges and investigated by Sri Lankaninvestigators, he said.“Of course, if the investigators need foreign

expertise they could acquire them and the SpecialHigh Court could allow foreign observers,”Paranagama said.As regards the Truth and ReconciliationCommission he said that it is meant to allowpeople to speak out about their experiences andgive vent to their grievances. And perpetrators ofatrocities could own up,express regret and seekamnesty.“The T and R commissioncould then consider givingsome of those who pleadedguilty an accountableamnesty. They will not beallowed to go scot free but will be given anappropriate punishment,” Paranagama said. The Sirisena-Wickremsinghe government is yet toaccept the Paranagama Commission’s report, butit is most likely to accept it as there is a strong

feeling in Sri Lanka’s majority Sinhalesecommunity that the heroic armed forces whichdefeated the dreaded Liberation Tigers of TamilEelam (LTTE) must not be pilloried, and thatforeign judges and investigators with preconceivednotions and anti-Sri Lankan agendas should not be

allowed to conduct investigations and sit injudgment. But the Tamil minority is unlikely to be happywith Justice Paranagama’s prescriptionsbecause it has been vociferously demanding anInternational Judicial Mechanism with foreignjudges and investigators on the grounds that SriLankan judges and investigators will be biasedagainst them. A resolution jointly moved by theUS and Sri Lanka at the UN Human Rights

Council in Geneva on October 1, 2015 alsoenvisaged an international Judicial Mechanism. However, since that resolution was passed, theleaders of the government of Sri Lanka have beenrepeatedly assuring the Sinhalese majority that

foreign involvement will be limited to getting foreigntechnical expertise in investigations. PresidentSirisena has said times without number that theJudicial Mechanism will be a local one and ForeignMinister Mangala Samaraweera has said thatforeign participation can be of various kinds andthat Sri Lanka has options to explore in thisregards.Given the friendly relations the present regime inColombo has with Washington and the West, thelatter are unlikely to press the Sri Lankangovernment to go for an international JudicialMechanism. High level visitors from the StateDepartment have said that the nature of theJudicial Mechanism will be left to be decided by SriLankans themselves. They have also hinted thatUS interests lie in the survival of the presentregime and in the promotion of US-Sri Lankaeconomic and business relations and not in thepursuit of human rights goals. (sundaytimes.lk) Australian High Commissioner(HC) Bruce Hutchesson has responded to theSunday Times following last week’s page 1 leadstory “Australia lists Tamil Eelam in census”, statingthat, what happened was that internal guidelines ofthe census enumerators accidentally got into theofficial website. Not that the country’s nationalcensus recognised ‘Tamil Eelam’ as a separatecountry.Explaining what happened, the HC says theAustralian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) providesinternal guidance- instructions given on how to sortresponses by members of the public to the questionon ‘country of birth’- and, in this specific instance, staff were instructed that any respondents whochoose to write “Tamil Eelam” as their country ofbirth, must be recorded as having been born in SriLanka. This guidance in no way grants validation toany such public responses- in fact, to the contrary,

he says.“We regret this internal guidance was placed on theABS website”, the HC states.HC Hutchesson adds that the AustralianGovernment therefore did not list “Tamil Eelam” asan option for those responding to the nationalCensus question on ‘country of birth’ and that, hisgovernment has never recognised ‘Tamil Eelam’ asa separate country. He says he has briefed seniorSri Lankan Government officials last week on thematter. The Sunday Times reported last week that, the ABSwebsite had included the words ‘Tamil Eelam’ intheit website during an ongoing national census, which invited a barrage of telephone calls to the SriLankan High Commission in Canberra. HC S.Skandakumar had lodged a protest with the ABSand the Dept of Foreign Affairs, after which thereference to ‘Tamil Eelam’ was removed from the

website. The Dept of Foreign Affairs however, hadn’t given the Sri Lanka High Commission anexplanation of “internal guidance” being placedon the ABS website last week.An inquiry is pending as to how the ABSwebsite was hacked into on Augsut 9, the sameday the reference to ‘Tamil Eelam’ wasremoved from the site. HC Hutchesson, however, says to suggest the guidance was theproduct of a ‘pro-LTTE stunt’ is “fanciful”.

Ishara Jayawardane(dailynews.lk) Christopher Columbus calledpapaya the ‘fruit of the angels’. That is an apt termbecause, in a way, it looks like some divine handpainted the colours of the sunrise into it – insideand out. When it’s cut open, the contrastingcolours are so striking. The seeds that form thecore of the fruit are like tiny black grapes, encasedby a watery, delicious and refreshing covering ofskin or flesh, which is the edible part.‘Garden Talk’ speaks to Fruit Research andDevelopment Institute, Kannawila, HoranaAssistant Director (Research) Indrani Kalubowilaon this ‘angel’ of the tropics.“It is mostly grown in Thailand and Hawaii as wellas Sri Lanka and India: mostly in tropical countries. The ideal climate is tropical and sub- tropical. In SriLanka, the papaya plant is grown in the dry andintermediate zones. In the wet zone, it is mostlygrown in home gardens,” said Kalubowila. There are many types of papaya. One type iscalled ‘Solo’ but there are bigger types too. Thepapaya we usually consume has the botanicalname ‘Carica Papaya’. The types that come under‘Carica Papaya’ are Solo and the bigger papayas. In Jamaica, large papayas grow up to six kilos.“Also, there are papayas grown in Sri Lanka for

generations. So we have local papayas andpapayas that have come from other countries,”stated Kalubowila. One way of cultivating papayais by planting seeds. It can also be done throughbudding and grafting, but it is not growncommercially that way.“Budding and grafting are not techniques that canbe applied to the cultivation of papaya. Thetechniques are notused even for homegardening. Thequality of the plantcannot be predictedwhen planting aseed. It is controlledby developing inbredor hybrid plants,”pointed outKalubowila.Kalubowilacautioned that this isdifficult tounderstand withoutthe basic knowledgeof the principles ofplant breeding.“Budding and grafting techniques have not beendeveloped to the level where it can be applied.

Papaya cultivation is done through planting.Whether they can be cultivated throughvegetative propagation is still being studied.Budding and grafting papaya are notconfirmed methodologies,” explainedKalubowila. Papaya is a cross-pollinatedcrop. However, they can be self- pollinatedas well.“A flower may have male or female parts. If ithas both parts, it is considered to be ahermaphrodite. Pollination is done by windand insects. Trees that have only male partsin flowers will never grow fruits. Flowers withonly male parts are unproductive. This isbecause it does not come into contact withfemale pollen in order to pollinate.Trees with only female parts in flower willproduce fruits when cross-pollinated by malepollens. A hermaphrodite which has male

and female parts in flowers can be pollinatedthrough cross or self- pollination,” elucidatedKalubowila.Papayas contain Vitamin A and C. It is also good toreduce constipation. The papain enzyme is goodfor digestion.“Papayas are mainly consumed as a fresh fruit. Itcan be used to make jam or cordial. Immature fruit

can be used to make pickle. It isalso used for cooking. It is a fruitthat is difficult to store. It can bekept for ten days if the outercovering is tough and three days ifthe covering is not that tough.Papaya can be refrigerated for fiveto seven days at a temperature of11 Centigrade. Maintaining thequality is the problem,” addedKalubowila. It can be grown in a nursery beforebeing planted in the field. The polybag should be four inches indiametre and six inches high.Drainage holes are made in thepolybag to ensure good drainage. After around 10 leaves appear and

the plant is around 12inches high, it is planted inthe field.“When digging the hole inthe field, you have toseparate the top soil.Afterward, you come tothe sub soil which is notfertile. It has no nutrients. This is also dug up andseparated. Then compostand cattle dung is mixedwith the top soil and thehole is refilled with thismedium,” informedKalubowila. In the nursery, the shadenet needs to give 50percent shade and thetemperature needs to be25 Celsius. “We import

papaya seeds. 10g amounts to Rs. 8,000. Thepapaya season is April and May. However, it isgrown throughout the year. There is an abundanceof papaya during April and May,” statedKalubowila.

The De Lanerolle Brothers, Rohan and Ishantalk to Purnima Pilapitiya about their upcomingshow “Keeping It Real”, that will see them onstage with a 13-piece live band

“Keeping it Real” will be held on September 7at 7.30 p.m. at the Main Hall- BMICH. Tickets(Available — Rs. 1, 500 and Rs. 1000) can bepurchased by calling 0777996991.

(sundaytimes.lk) When the De Lanerolle Brothersfirst took the stage, it surprisingly wasn’t to sing. The siblings – Rohan and Ishan are known for theirrich harmonies and showmanship which audiencesget to witness at their yearly concerts. But beforetheir melodious performances and their name, nowa brand in its own right, they were a pair ofsiblings who shared a musical chemistry as strongas their familial bond. “I was still in my blue shorts,”remembers Ishan of the first time he and hisbrother performed together on stage back in 1993when he was still in the primary. Playing the violinfor a school show at their alma mater- S. Thomas’College, Mount Lavinia, the then youngster wasaccompanied by Rohan on the piano. Ishan wouldlater perform at Rohan’s concerts as a guestartiste, setting the scene for a musical partnershipthat would cement their name in the music scene. This September will see “Keeping It Real”, theBrothers’ new show. A step away from the dinnershows they are known for hosting , “Keeping it

Real” is one of their newer projects, in tune withtheir constant desire to experiment and diversifytheir brand of music. Backed by a live band, theircurrent venture had its first airing last year where apacked audience at the BMICH got to see themperform backed by a nine–piece live band.Encouraged by its success, the two are ready totake things up a notch. “This year the band isbigger” they say – with 13 musicians making up“DLB squared”- their backing band. The show isdirected by Shobi Perera, who has worked with theBrothers for years andproduced around 200tracks for them .“Any artiste wouldprefer to perform tolive music” they bothagree, which alsolends an addedoomph to aperformance. Thesecret to a good showis to “keep theaudience on theirtoes”, Rohan says. While it takes a goodvoice to obviouslymake a good singerthey refuse to limittheir image to justthat. “We’re not justsingers,” they say. It’swhy audiences lookforward to their wryjokes between songsand their easy charmand sincerity that add so much to theircomfortable stage image. The success of a show also depends a lot on theset list for the night, they explain. “It’s 60% of whatthe audiences want to hear and 40% of ourrepertoire.” They can’t seem to shake off fanfavourites “Release me” and “Spanish Eyes”which manage to find their way even into their

Christmas shows, they laugh. When he first began performing, Rohanalong with Ishan was heavily influenced bychurch music, thanks to the training theyreceived from their school choir. Rohanwould also cultivate a passion for classicalmusic which he played rather loud at homeand inadvertently influenced Ishan, the lattersays.Ishan on the other hand loves Broadwaymusic. While Rohan handles the

programmes fortheir concerts“we have manyhealthydebates” addsIshan. Althoughclassical andBroadway are close totheir hearts “an artistecan’t always performwhat he likes”explains Rohan.Their goal as artistesis not to educate theiraudiences, be it withregard to classicalmusic, etc. but ratherto entertain them, amistake they feelmany artistes make. It’s why their style ofperforming classicalmusic is constantlyevolving and draws inunusually big crowds.

“You need to try out different presentations.”Although this is the seventh year of performing asa duo, Rohan isn’t shy to admit that he still feelsnervous before every show. It’s the same for Ishanbut for a different reason. “I know he will handle theshow,” Ishan says, with Ishan coordinatingeverything behind the scenes while Rohan takescare of the performance part of their work. “There

are times I don’t even remember which song we’regoing to sing next,” Ishan admits, amidst beingstage manager, marketing manager and a varietyof other roles when organizing a concert. Butwhen they breeze on to the stage smiling, harmonies in sync, it’s difficult to believe that mostof their songs are ad-libbed and often differentfrom what they have rehearsed. The two attribute it to their close bond and mutualtrust and respect. “It’s what makes a goodpartnership,” they add, extending this rapport totheir band and the reason for their long standingfan base. “You especially shouldn’t take youraudience for granted.” It’s why they’ve launched anew delivery service for ticket buyers, withpurchases over Rs. 3000 receiving free delivery. The new option has even found tickets beingdelivered as far as Negombo and Galle. “It’s niceto know we’ve made an impression on someone,”they smile humbly.

Warfrom P12United Nations Human Rights Council

(Contd: on P23)

The resolution 30/1 of the United NationsHuman Rights Council in Genevarequires Sri Lanka to establish “hybridspecial courts” to probe the seriousallegations of war crimes both by thegovernment troops and the LTTE,integrating international judges, prosecutors, lawyers and investigators asan essential step towards justice. There are, of course, serious objectionsto the participation of foreign judges inthe proposed tribunal by a substantialsection of the parliamentarians whoconstitute the Joint Opposition led by theformer President Mahinda Rajapaksa. It has been the most undesirable aspect

of the political culture of this country thatwhenever a political leader or a politicalparty in power makes an attempt toaddress the grievances of the Tamilcommunity, such attempts are projectednot as necessary steps for promotingreconciliation among communities but aspreliminary steps before granting TamilEelam or a separate state. Certain stepstaken by the present government forpromoting reconciliation, specially for theimplementation of the commitmentsundertaken by the Sri Lankangovernment contained in the UNHRCresolution 30/1, such as steps alreadytaken for constitutional reforms andcooperating with the UNO for holding acredible investigation regarding theallegations of war crimes are projected assteps that will contribute to the division of

the country. This attitude of the JointOpposition towards the implementation ofthe UNHRC resolution 30/1 is a seriousobstacle, the incumbent government hasto face. However, according to the viewsexpressed by the Sri Lankan ForeignMinister, the Prime Minister and thePresident, the Sri Lankan government isagainst the inclusion of foreign judges ina tribunal to be established for holdingsuch an investigation. The reason givenfor the inclusion of foreign judges in sucha tribunal is that although Sri Lanka hasmany excellent judges, lawyers and lawenforcement officials, over the years, thesystem became highly politicized, unbalanced and unreliable.

(dailynews.lk) Lakshman Kadirgamar sacrificed hislife for a worthy cause, having worked tirelessly torestore the tarnished image of Sri Lanka. His eightyear tenure as Foreign Minister, no doubt set acredible and unmatchable example to hissuccessors. Taking up the position at a crucialjuncture in Sri Lanka’s history, he handledinternational relations with diplomaticprofessionalism and prudence. Political analysts, diplomats and dignitaries here and abroad hadnever been hesitant to dub him “thebest Foreign Minister Sri Lanka everhad.”“There’s no doubt about that,” quicklyagreed his daughter AjitaKadirgamar.“It was a job absolutely tailor-madefor him. No one before him had donesuch a good job and it is unlikely thatanybody else ever will,” she addedwith confidence.“LK’s enormous internationalexperience, travel and the years ofprotocol and etiquette involved in UNwork made him supremely preparedfor the role of Sri Lanka’s ForeignMinister, where from day one heconsidered himself to be on an equalfooting with his global counterparts,”she saidHis network was such that he did notneed Foreign Ministry machinery to get through toany eminent diplomat or politician in theinternational arena.“He would have known some way to get through tothat person, because he himself had so manycontacts.”The prudent way LK formulated the country’sforeign Policy while adhering to international lawsgained much praise and got the LTTE listed as aterrorist organisation in many foreign countries. This was considered ashis greatest achievement.“People remember himlargely for that. And it wasgreatly due to his ability tospeak that he couldconvince the world,” shesaid. However, Ajita said shewasn’t a fly on the wallduring his tenure asForeign Minister.Ajita left the country in2002 while her father wasstill serving as ForeignMinister.“As you know, I cameback in 1982 and was inthe country for nearly 20years, but left in 2002. Sothe last few years beforehe died I wasn’t here,”“Initially he would still remember our birthdays andwould try and send a gift or call us.”But Ajita regretted that the practice did notcontinue. “Tight security and the second marriagedistanced her from her father in later years of hislife.“But I can understand he couldn’t just get in the carand go anywhere. Everything was a big operationand he didn’t want to put us at risk. You knowcoming down the lane to visit us would havecreated much hassle. The one time that he camebefore we left, [ For US] what a big ‘ha ho’ thatwas! Imagine every time he came, having to dothat. So that was a great pity and not only us, allhis friends, nobody had access to him in the end,”she said.

Today, 11 years after her legendary father’s death, she feels remorse for not having tried to re-startthe ‘conversation’ from where it ended.“When you have an argument with someone ordon’t speak with someone for a long time, a senseof distance starts. Then even though there’s noanger, both parties feel ‘should I call’ or ‘is it up tome to call’ or ‘why can’t they call me.’ And after awhile, it becomes hard for both people to make uptheir minds and call first. I think that’s what

happened and in the endthere was so muchdistance and neither of usknew who should take thefirst step,” Ajita said.Perhaps she wished shecould rewind time and goback to the past where shesnuggled beneath the armof her father...Another reason why LKwas unable to maintainclose contacts with otherswas because he was nottech savvy. Ajita, in thesecond edition of her book, had included an interviewwith personal securityofficer of the ForeignMinister M.H.Marso, whohad revealed that LK never

used a cell phone.“Emails were available, but anyway he was not atech person. After speaking to Marso only, it reallyconfirmed to me. My father didn’t carry a cellphone. I don’t think he knew how to use a cellphone. He never got onto a computer. He couldtype one finger at a time.... So forget aboutemails!” she went on.

LK strived hard for the democratic rights of the

Tamil people as well and constantly grieved thesubjection of the Tamil people to LTTEauthoritarianism. But still, why wasn’t he generallyconsidered a hero of the Tamils, as what he foughtagainst was terrorism, not Tamils, the Daily Newsquestioned.“It was. What he fought against was terrorism. Thiswas a general misconception. But if you think backon it, 30 years ago initially Prabhakaran waseverybody’s hero. Tamils even if they did not say itopenly, they wanted Eelam. Even Colombo Tamilssupported the idea. So he was sometimes seen asbeing against Tamils. It is like the Muslims now.Even we often think every Muslim is ISIS, but it isnot true. It is very much a similar situation. So wetend to put things in a box,” she explained.“He was definitely against terrorism. He was

against breaking of the country. But also atthe same time, because of his position, I amsure there were lots of times (I think Imentioned a few in my book) where he wasapproached by Tamils (may be to speak atan event or have some dealings withsomebody and maybe with Tamils.) But hehad to think twice because by association, then people would have blamed him takingsides.”What her father’s stand was that he mighthave been Tamil by birth, but he was SriLankan first. “Race, caste and religion meantnothing to him as he always put the country’sinterest first.”As all Sri Lankans were aware, he was veryfirmly committed to a unitary state, a statewithin which all communities would be ableto live in harmony and in unison.

Her father was committed to an absolutelyworthy cause. A noble man he was, and was byno means equal to politicians of the presentday no matter whether they were UNP or SLFP.“If at all he had a political party, it would havebeen the UNP. But my point is what does UNPor SLFP mean? Today, are there any diehardUNPers or SLFPers? They’d always jump fromone party to another.”“So if at all he was a UNPer, it would havebeen in the 50s, 60s and 70s where the partypolitics were different,” she stressed. She said his father might have fit into the UNP,during JR’s or his brother HW’s time. “The ideologyand mentality of politics are totally different now,”she added.Had LK lived today, what would have been hisreaction regarding war victory, the Daily Newsasked.“He would have wanted the war to end, but not theway it happened, not with the kind of loss of life....,”she said, her voice so firm.

So great was his popularitytowards the end of his first term asForeign Minister, LK stood out inthe Cabinet as the best choice forPrime Minister.“Even in politics towards the end, they were sidelining him, becauseby that time the talk was that hewould be a good Prime Minister. Atthe time of his death he didn’t have close ties withgovt officials. And I don’t know whether Imentioned it in the book up until the last minute Ithink there was a distancing between him and thegovernment. It was all organised. This is howpolitics work,”she added regrettably. However, Ajita stressed that former PresidentChandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga (CBK)

wanted him as Prime Ministerdefinitely, but she was undersevere pressure.“She [CBK] wanted himdefinitely, but there was muchpressure from the others andup until the last minute he hadbeen led to believe that hewould be the next PrimeMinister, until they had to giveit to the other guy,[MR],” shesaid.“First of all people were sayinghe should have been PM. Butin a majority Buddhist country Idon’t think it’s going to fly nomatter how great the man is,”she said. But it was the very Sinhalesewho loved him most? TheDaily News asked.“True, but then again, his

Sinhala was also very basic. I don’t think we areready as a country to accept it. Even for a man likehim- who can do so much and has the mind andthe willpower-, if he doesn’t meet people’s basicrequirements- (must be Sinhala speaking and mustbe a Buddhist,)”he is generally notaccepted.”More than adecade haspassed since theincident. LK is nomore , but hismission was toestablish acountry where allcommunitiescould live inharmony as SriLankans.“We have a longway to go to evento get to the pointof the kind of SriLanka that he envisioned. One country-onecommunity, “she finally noted

Even though some Tamils had referred to him as atraitor, he was definitely not, Ajita noted. He was just faithful to the job he was assigned todo.[Some] Tamils feel that he was a traitor andbetrayed their cause. If we need to get rid of theTigers and we need to stop the war, we need tostop Prabhakaran [violence], not that we need todestroy the Tamils and kill them. But some got it

mixed up.”She confessed that, she in many ways felt sorry forher father, as he was often misunderstood.“No matter how his heart was breaking about thefact that Tamils were suffering, what could he havedone? I mean his mission in life, [the post] was theForeign Minister, not the Minister of Defence or theMinister of War. Those decisions weren’t made byhim. His job and which he did well was to convince

the world what the Tigerswere really like and to getthe world to put a stop tosupporting them andfunding them thinking thatthey were heroes. And inthat he did a good job. Hetold the UN about the childsoldiers, he got thecountries to ban them. Soas a Foreign Minister he

did a great job.”She added that many good things he did for Tamilstoo had gone unnoticed.“Even I didn’t know that he had done so much tohelp rebuild the Jaffna Library until I startedresearching about my father to write his biography.Being a modest person he never boasted aboutwhat he did and as a result many people were notaware of his full contribution to the Tamils.”

His great love for the country was vividly displayedthrough the speech he made at the Oxford Unionon March 18, 2015, at the unveiling of his portrait. The eminent Oxford Scholar drew applause fromthe audience when he said thus;“I would like to, if I may, to assume that I couldshare the honour with the people of my country, SriLanka. I had my schooling there, my first universitywas there, I went to Law College there and by thetime I came to Oxford as a Postgraduate student, well, I was certainly a matured person. Oxford wasthe icing on the cake. but the cake was baked athome...”And Ajita said that it was a fine proof of his love forthe country.“I think by saying so he also meant that he was justin many ways a regular Sri Lankan boy who hadgreat gifts. He had the gift of being able to speak, intelligence and being able to write. This was hishome, his love. Why do any of us return to SriLanka? Because nothing can beat the lifestylehere. You come back after 10 years, nothing haschanged. You cannot beat the lifestyle hereanywhere else in the world.”His inability to converse in Tamil did not affect the

least his tremendous lovefor the country, or for hiscommunity. Anyway shesaid that his could havebeen a different story if heknew Tamil. “Things wouldhave been totally different.Again the core of the issueof the country goes back tothe language,” she added. She was in the US whenher father was murdered. Itwas her friend Cherinawho phoned her up toconvey the shocking news.Everything else after thatremains blurry..“The biggest tragedy todayis me and my brother do

not have access to any of his things. Nothingnothing.... nothing.” she reiterated. “It would havelooked at times like he had become a Buddhist, butmost of us don’t believe that...I definitely believe he[LK] would have wanted at least part of his remainsto be buried with the family...”Anyway just as LK once said in one of his very fineparliamentary speeches, during the Tawakkaldebate in 1996 “ he did not fear the bullets and thebombs aimed at him. That did not frighten him, thatdid not bother him...”The greatest is gone and he is our hero.

By L.B. Senaratne in KandyAmid the clash of war, Indiriraja came as atoken of peace(sundaytimes.lk) Few know the story behind themajestic, seven-foot-high tusker, Indiriraja, whichcarried the Golden Karanduwa on some days inthe just concluded Esala Perahera, the onlypageant in the world where humans and animalsin such large numbers mingle without the leastharm to any of them.It all came about in 1987, when the famousMaligawa elephant, Raja, was ailing. The thenDiyawadana Nilame, Neranjan Wijeratne, consulted the respected veterinarian of theUniversity of Peradeniya, Professor VijithaKuruwita, who was the vet for the Sri DaladaMaligawa. The Diyawadana Nilame decided, notwithstandingthe political climate in the country, to approach theIndian Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi for assistance. He contacted the Venerable MapalagamaVipulasara Thera, who was the President of theMahabodhi Society in India, to arrange a meetingwith the Indian leader.Accompanying the Diyawadana Nilame was a

formidable delegation comprising the Mahanayakeof Asgiri, the Venerable Palipanne Chandananda,Anunayake of Malwatte, the Ven. PandithaPahamunegunanda Thera, a member of the Asgiri

Karaka Sangha Sabha theVenerable PalipanneSirinivasa Thera and Professor Kuruwita. Theappointment was arranged and the Lankandelegation met Prime Minister Gandhi in NewDelhi. After a long discussion, during which Mr. Gandhi

presented the Diyawadana Nilame with a bookon elephants, the Ven. Palipanne Chandanandaexpressed the view that the challenges facingIndia and Sri Lanka could be bridged if the Indianleader could offer a tusker to the Sri DaladaMaligawa in order to show the people that India istheir friend. The Prime Minister immediately told thedelegation he would arrange for them to select atusker from the Mundumalai Elephant TrainingCentre, which lies between the states ofKarnataka and Ootacamund. The Diyawadane Nilame and Prof. Kuruwitastayed two weeks at the centre to select a tuskerthat would suit the requirements of the Sri DaladaMaligawa. They saw Indiriraja, which fitted therequirements of a tusker to carry the GoldenKaranduwa. Seven feet in height, the elephanthad an almost flat back that was suitable to strapthe Ransivige, which encases the GoldenKaranduwa. An Indian veterinarian, Dr.Krishnamoorthy, aided Prof. Kuruwita in theselection. The controversial Indian High Commissioner, J.N.Dixit, deputised in handing over the elephant toNeranjan Wijeyratne, who says Indiriraja wasstrapped with the Ransivige three months after

his arrival, trained first for thePoson procession and then forthe Kartika Mangalya and finallyfor the Kandy Esala Perahera.

Since 1990,Indiriraja has beendoing the honours atthe Sri DaladaMaligawa, carryingthe casket for closeupon 26 years. It isnot easy beingstrapped with foot-wide leather strapsand otherparaphernalia, butthe majestic tusker isalways calm anddignified.

According to the formerDiyawadane Nilame and trainerSeneviratne, Indiriaja hates the goad and has beentrained only with a stick.Sunil Rambukpotha, who was on the staff of the SriDalada Maligawa, recalls that when Veterinarian

Krishnamoorthy while attending a symposium in SriLanka had come to the Maha Maluwa to seeIndiriaja the tusker had recognised Dr.Krishnamoorthy by his voice.

Entrancing tale of the Esala’s mighty tusker

(sundaytimes.lk) The majestic tuskerNadungamuwe Raja, the bearer of the casketcontaining the sacred tooth relic on somedays at the Esala Maha has started its longtrek back home. The journey of nearly 100kilometres to his home at Nedungamuwa inthe Gampaha District takes him and hismahout Wilson Kodituwakku nearly five daysbut it’s a journey on foot done at a leisurelypace. Nadungamuwe Raja prefers walking inthe night and spending the rest of the daylazing around for long hours in the water.Nadungamuwe Raja’s journey to Sri Lanka isone that began across the miles in the city ofMysore in the Indian state of Karnataka. It isin this city of kings that the tusker was born around1954. Nadungamuwe Raja was one of twoelephant calves gifted by a Maharaja of Mysore toa veteran native physician monk who was residingat the Nilammahara Temple in Piliyandala. Thephysician monk’s ability to cure various ailmentshad given him fame far and wide and as the storyis told, a relative of the Maharajah of Mysore wasamong those the monk cured. It was in

appreciation for curing his relative’s prolongedillness, the two tuskers were gifted. In the late 70s, the tusker was acquired byDharmavijaya Veda Ralahamy of theNadungamuwa area, an eminent ayurvedicphysician of the time and it is by the name of thisvillage the tusker is known today. His presentowner is Harsha Dharmavijaya, the son of theVeda Ralahamy of Nedungamuwa.

By Kalakeerthi Dr. Edwin Ariyadasa(sundayobserver.lk) Even in this ultra-sophisticatedage of digital links, Facebook and smartphonesthat connect you to any place with a mere swipeand other forms of super-media, there are somewho still believe in miracles. When I say ‘some’, Imay be in error, because there are many in thisday and time, to whom ‘miracles’ are real. For immediate proof of the validity of thisobservation, we could delve into the history of ourcurrent theme – The Royal Monastery at Bellanvila(Bellanvila Raja Maha Vehera).A whole complex of miraculous occurrences iswrapped around the recent reincarnation of thissacred shrine – Bellanvila Raja Maha Viharaya. To trace this series of events, we have to turn tothe austere and fervent Buddhist monk who longyears ago ushered in this new era of the Bellanvilashrine.Fascinated by the folk-history relating to the fate ofthe magnificent palace built by KingParakramabahu the sixth at Attidiya in theneighbourhood of Bellavila, this legendary monkThengodagedara Hamuduruvo, (monk fromThengodagedara) put up a simple residence at thesite, thought to be the location of that RoyalPalace.Prolific writer and historian, Ranjith Palihapitiyawho is an assiduous researcher, says that one canget only a modicum of information about thislegendary Buddhist monk. But, the folk history that recounts this monk’s majordiscovery is avidly narrated and widelyremembered. The tale has a thrilling touch of the miraculous, toit. The story, firmly entrenched in folk history, isfairly simple in content and structure. In about 1850, this adventurous monk wastravelling in a boat towards Pepiliyana. In thosedays, streams, canals and rivers were used forpublic transport of our time. Some tend to identify that canal (the waterway) as

the stream Katu Ela, which flows past Bellanvila atpresent. As the folk-story has it, the monk was alerted by adrum-tatoo, that issued from the jungle. Keen totrace the origin of the mysterious drum sounds, themonk stepped off the boat and trekked through thethick forest. All of a sudden the drums fell silent. The monk to his utter surprise and profound joy, discovered an aged, majestic Bodhi Treesurrounded by the jungle tide.Summoning the devoted villagers in theneighbourhood, the monk had the jungle cleared.Fully convinced that this was the descendant of thesacred Bodhi Tree at Anuradhapura with achronicled age spanning more than 20 centuries, the monk established a sacred shrine to protect, honour and adore it.The shrine evolved over a period of more than 180years, and is currently reputed as a prestigiousspiritual centre. In terms of a long tutelary tradition, the eruditePrelate, Ven. Prof. Bellanvila Wimalaratana MahaNayaka Thera, Chancellor, University of SriJayawardenepura, is the present Incumbent ofBellanvila Raja MahaVihara.Comprehensively aware of the need to be mindfulof the spiritual attitudes of both the traditionalistsand the moderns, this Ven.Prelate provides guidance to alldevotees.Ven. Prelate Prof. BellanvilaWimalaratana Nayaka Therapresents his vision in very clearterms: “If spiritual Institutions ofour day are to be sociallyfunctional, there should be apragmatic link between laysociety and religiousestablishments. I havelaunched ‘The BellanvilaCommunity DevelopmentFoundation’ to organise the

services renderedby religiousinstitutions to beultra-sensitive tothe spiritual needsof the society atlarge.Among the multiplicity of religiouscentres, where devotees assemble invast throngs, Bellanvila is one of theforemost. Those who adore GodVishnu also foregather at this shrine, seeking favours from this deity. The Esala Pageant (Perahera) atBellanvila Raja MahaVihara is aspectacular annual event that is widelypatronised by an extensive range ofspectators. What currently takes place is the 66thPerahera in this annual series. Thetradition began way back in 1950.Over the years the annual event hasevolved in a variety of modes, as isnatural. In the first instance this pageant

originated with theKandy Perahera as itsmodel. Structuringtemple processions, taking the KandyPerahera as the ideal, has been the favouredpractice over a longperiod of time.A special noteworthyfeature of theBellanvila Pageantstands out as anoriginal initiative. There is an age-oldpractice that should befollowed wheninstitutions andindividuals arehonoured. Theworshipper walksround the sacredobject on the HolyPersonality, with one’s right side towards thehonoured phenomenon. If, for instance, you go round a stupa worshippingthat sacred edifice, you always turn your right side

to the object you adore – this ritual is described aspradakshine - keeping the worshipped object onyour right. Most pageants do not follow this practice. But, thespectacular annual pageant at Bellanvila keeps thesacred shrine on the right. The Chief Incumbent of Bellanvila temple gets hisdevotees to adhere to these traditional rites andrituals scrupulously. The ritual recital of pirith – will continueuninterrupted throughout the days and nights ofthe pageant. The performance of the DonakadaAsna and the conducting of the Devadutha in aprocession, are central to Bellanvila pageant.(Devaduta – is the emissary of God). The nomenclature of the Bellanvila pageantdeviates slightly from other well-known pageantsand parades. At Bellanvila, there are twoperformance items named Mal Perahera andPavada Perahera. The rites and rituals associated

with Bellanvila Esala Perahera end with the water-cutting ceremony, conducted at theBoralasgamuwa ferry. These spiritual pageants perform a highlyimportant service to their communities and to the

society at large. From ancient days on,these pageants and peraheras wereheld with the participation of the wholecommunity. As a result, theserepresent instances of communalharmony and group unity. In a sociological perspective, thesespectacular pageants perform a highlyvaluable service. They enable thesurvival of some important cultural andritual elements. This is quite effectivelybrought out by the Kandy Perahera. For centuries some families andvillagers, perform rites and ritualsassigned to their ancestors centuriesago.Over and above all that, the ordinaryfolk experience a moment of spiritualecstasy when they view thesespectacles. They are highly significantcommunal moments too. Families view

the pageants together. Young couples havemoments of shared joy. In a way they eliminate, atleast for a while, those anti-social preoccupationsthat lead to violence.

The Bellanvila Esala Pageant is one of the mostprominent processions in Sri Lanka. The continuedperformance of such wholesome pageants forms avery positive development in the country’scommunal culture. The Annual Pageant atGangarama, which is fairly recent in origin, hasquite effectively demonstrated the capacity of suchspiritual events to unify society with no thoughtwhatsoever of those differences that breed divisionand conflict. Those positive values are communicated by theBellanvila Pageant as well.May such elevating social moments proliferate.

Warfrom P18The update of the United Nations HighCommissioner on Human Rights presented at the31st session of the Human Rights Council inGeneva also emphasizes the need for theparticipation of foreign judges in such an inquiry. However, the remark that the Sri Lankan systemhas become highly politicized, unbalanced andunreliable is not relevant to the present state of theJudiciary in Sri Lanka. It can be pointed out thatthe rule of law is the only guiding principle bywhich courts in Sri Lanka are functioning today.

A conducive environment now prevails in Sri Lankafor the judges to act freely guided only by thedemocratic principle of the rule of law withoutbeing politically influenced. Two recent judgmentsdelivered by the Supreme Court make thetransformation that has taken place in the SriLankan Judiciary, after the regime change, veryclear. The Supreme Court in its judgment delivered onJune 24, 2016 regarding an application by aforeign company, Nobel Resources InternationalPvt. Limited registered in Singapore, declared thatthe decision of the Standing Cabinet AppointedProcurement Committee (SCAPC) to award thetender not to the petitioner but to another company,

also registered in Singapore, a Respondent in theapplication, cannot stand in the eye of the law.The Court held that the SCAPC has failed tocomply with the compulsory steps in the Evaluationprocedure in evaluating the bids. In another recentjudgment, the Supreme Court decided to suspendVAT and NBT increases done by way of notices bythe Finance Minister and the CommissionerGeneral of Inland Revenue, from May 2, for thereason that these increases were put into force bythe Commissioner General of Inland Revenuearbitrarily without proper parliamentary approval, violating the article 148 of the Constitution. Notonly the Supreme Court even the lower courts inthe judicial system now function with a sense ofindependence from political interference. Mycontention, therefore, is that it is not difficult to findSri Lankan judges known for integrity andimpartiality. What is important is that all partiesconcerned, the Sri Lankan government, the TNArepresenting the Tamil community in the North andEast and civil society organisations committed tothe task of upholding good governance and therule of law should be able to reach consensus inthe matter of selecting Sri Lankan judges to servein the tribunal to be established for investigatingthe allegations of serious human rights violationsamounting to war crimes.According to the vast majority of reasonablecitizens what is material is not whether the tribunal

that will finally be constituted for investigatingalleged human rights violations, is a domestictribunal or a hybrid court consisting of Sri Lankanjudges and judges from foreign countries, butwhether the selected judges are generallyacceptable to the Sri Lankan government and theTamil people in the North and East, specially thevictims of human rights violations and theirrelatives. The Sri Lankan government is trying to convincethe High Commissioner for Human Rights and theHuman Rights Council in Geneva that Sri Lanka iscapable of conducting a credible and impartialdomestic inquiry regarding the allegations of warcrimes.

The allegations of serious violations of humanrights and humanitarian law against the Sri Lankanarmed forces have tarnished the reputation whichthe military forces had earned as a well disciplinedand a law-abiding military force. The position of thearmed forces and the government is that theseallegations of serious violations are unfounded andare not based on credible evidence.Large scale loss of life and suffering experiencedby the civilians during the course of the war wasmainly due to the offensive acts of the LTTE, suchas sending children to the war front and usingcivilians as human shields for their own protection.

Therefore it is necessary to hold an impartial andcredible investigation for clearing the good name ofthe armed forces and restoring their reputation asa well disciplined military force whose membersare eligible for recruitment to the peace keepingforces of the UNO. However, it is not possible torule out the possibility of isolated instances ofserious violations of humanitarian law by someindividuals in the armed forces. It is necessary tofind out whether there were such instances andwho were responsible for committing such acts. There is a genuine desire on the part of all rightthinking people to know the truth regarding seriousallegations against the armed forces. What willcontribute to the promotion of reconciliation isfinding the truth regarding these allegations andnot suppressing the truth. After the change of government, consequent to theJanuary 8, 2015 presidential election, a drasticchange has occurred in the attitude of the SriLankan government towards the UNO involvementin the war crimes. The present government hasadopted the pragmatic policy of deviating from theconfrontationist approach to the UNO and co-operating with the High Commissioner for HumanRights and the Human Rights Council in Genevawith the genuine intention of promotingreconciliation and bringing about durable peace forthe country.

SINGERfrom P22series 1-0 after Lahiru Kumara, stoutly-builtseamer from Trinity College, Kandy completing anoutstanding bowling effort with an eleven-wicketmatch-haul fired Sri Lanka U19 to a seven-wicketvictory in the second and final Youth Test played atCounty Ground, Northampton. The young Lionsafter they got used to English conditions soonerthan expected played so well in the first leg of theirtour, the two-match Youth Test series that even inthe first four-day Test Sri Lanka after following-oncame back very strongly to force a stubborn drawin the end before their series-claimed victory in thefollowing Youth Test.It was England U19s first home defeat in a 4-daygame after six years and it was the sameopposition that defeated England on that occasiontoo in 2010.England U19s, desperate for recording their firstwin against Sri Lanka since Lankans arrived inEngland went into the three-match youth ODI

Sri Lanka U19s achieved an earlylead in the series when they defeated England bya huge margin of 108 runs in the opening one-dayer with skipper Charith Asalanka playing theprincipal role in both departments.Though the winning margin of the first match wasthe highest in the series, Lankans victory in thesecond match could be rated as the mostincredible one in which their batsmen led byAvishka Fernando with a blistering hundredfollowed by Sammu Ashan’s match-winninginnings helped their side overhaul England’s 300-plus target successfully thereby securing the serieswith an invincible lead of 2-0. England batted firstposting an imposing 315 in their 50 overs withthree batsmen completing 50-plus scores. Though315 looked to be on the safer side for England tobreak the winning streak of the Lankans and stayalive in the series, Lankans needing a win torecord their second successive series win on thistour got off to an

excellent start and thereafter maintained a match-winning scoring rate keeping their wickets intact atthe same time. After Dilan Jayalath’s 34-ball 41 at the top, AvishkaFernando showing his talent as a classy batsmanhelped Sri Lanka reach 267 for four before he wasunfortunately run-out for a well-compiled 96-ball117 with 5 fours and a six in the 36th over.Avishka’s dismissal at a time Sri Lanka werecruising along brought Sammu Ashan to the middlethat became an ideal replacement in the end asSammu instead of

Story and pictures by Mahil Wijesinghe(sundayobserver.lk) Scrambling over the ruins thatseem to cover every inch as far as the eye couldsee, we made our way through in search of theimpressive archaeological site of Pankuliya wherea magnificent Buddha statue is located hiddenamidst the ruins and lush green serene settingsurrounded by vast stretch of paddy fieldsencompassing the Malwatu Oya which flowsthrough the area.Though it is called Asokaramaya today, this wasknown as Pankuliya in ancient time. In fact,Pankuliya or Asokaramaya is one of the uniqueplaces where the grandeur of finest creation ofancient Sinhala arts is showcased vividly. The word 'Pankuliya' evokes much excitement maybe because we hear less about this little village onthe outskirts of Anuradhapura with its farmingcommunity. This is literally a road rarely travelledby the usual pilgrim or tourist. On the way to Pankuliya we passed about fivekilometers from the road leading to Gal Paalama(stone bridge) from Kuttampokuna inAnuradhapura, where we came across aresidential area and a notice board showing a road

on the right side to the Asokaramaya or Pankuliya. At this junction about a one kilometer, narrowmotorable road ends abruptly in the middle of thepaddy fields. From this point no vehicle can enterand we walked about 500 metres along thedeserted footpath to the Pankuliya archaeologicalsite amidst the breeze fromMalwatu Oya. On either side, vast green paddy fields spreadacross the flat landscape andthe calls and dances of thepeacocks added to theserenityin the morning. The main road about one andhalf kilometres across the vaststretch of paddy fields, leads toan ancient stone bridge overMalwatu Oya, close toPankuliya. This ancient bridgemade of stone once is a marvelof engineering of the days goneby. Many of the pillars of stonewhich held up the structure stillstand, some near the bank, some further away, with a few

sticking up mid-stream andsome of which are still visible.Asokaramaya is located in oneacre of land in a serene setting amidst a lushgreen canopy surrounding the the village ofPankuliya. This is a fairly unknown site to theaverage pilgrim but houses one of the fineststone carved Buddha statues in the countrytoday. Thisstatute almostequals the artisticqualities of thefamous SamadhiBuddha statue atthe MahamevnaUyana and theTholuvila Buddhastatue which isnow kept in theColombomuseum. Thisstatue is alsoknown asPankuliya Buddha. Unfortunately this area hasbeen neglected and isolated, rarely visited by thepilgrims although it has been conserved by theDepartment of Archaeology.Although we don't have any historical informationof the site, Pankuliya is believed to have beenbuilt by Princess Asokamala, the consort ofPrince Saliya, but there is no actual evidence to

prove it further. However, archaeologists believe that thecomplex was most likely anunnery according to theinscription of King Dappula V(918-930) BC, found at the site.Presently this archaeological siteis popular among the historiansand archaeologists because of itsBuddha statue. The multitude of ruin structuresscattered throughout the complexare remnants of the ruinedDagaba which lies beside theimage house. They have beenconserved and constructed on aplatform at a higher elevation fromthe ground. There are fourcardinal entrances to ascend theDagaba with a flight of steps andat the bottom of the each flight ofsteps contain a unique stonecarved pair of guard stones whichshowed much antiquity of thecomplex and what we can seetoday is only its brick foundation.

However, venturing in, soon we were surroundedby countless ruins which included stone pillars, flower altars, a ruined stone bathing pond,Janthaghara, guard stones, remnants of two stonestands to keep Punkalas and several stone potswhich were kept beside each flight of steps to

ascend the platforms. Thearchaeologists believe that these potswould have been kept full of water towash hands and feet of pilgrimsbefore they ascended the elevatedsacred areas.Several uneven stone pillars andbeautiful stone carved moonstonewith a pair of stone carved guardstones which are an exquisite work ofart by ancient sculptors lead to theimage house on the higher platform.Taking in the serene atmosphere thatheld a spell of enchantment, wemade our way to the unique imagehouse where the Buddha statue ofPankuliya has been placed on aconcrete structure. The severalruined pillars which are located nearthe image house probably indicatethat there had been a roof over thestatue in the past.

However, the Buddha statue of Pankuliyaaccording to the archaeologists may belong to theninth or tenth century in late Anuradhapura period. It is also a unique masterpiece of Sinhala Buddhistsculpture. The statue is sculptured out of dolomite

marble, seated in Virasanaposture and displays theAbaya Mudraa. The hollowedcarved eyes indicate that theywere once studded withprecious stones - treasurehunters have removed thoselong ago.The six feet and nine inchestall dolomitecarved Buddhastatue ofPankuliya hasbeen exposedto natural

elements such as rain, breeze andsun for centuries. A modern roofhas been erected over the statue bythe Dept. of Archaeology in therecent past, although thissomewhat affects the real beauty ofthe statue. But its enchantingaesthetic appeal and sense ofserenity has never been lost eventhough it has been exposed to themercy of the elements.

Paying our homage at the Buddha statue ofPankuliya at the image house, we went outsidestopping for a moment to look at the surroundingvista. Through the ruins and paddy fields weglimpsed the sacred Ruwanweli Maha Seya in thedistance. With the sun setting low, we had to end ourjourney. I had visited the Buddha statue ofPankuliya 15 years ago, what drew me back wasthe profound serenity of this desolated spiritualsite.

By Naushad Amit(sundaytimes.lk) Another day dawns in Sri Lanka’ssouthern city of Galle and Ediri Bandanage or, E.B.Channa, the former National Football Captain, begins his daily routine. A father of 3 daughters,Channa, at 37, helps around thehouse a little before donning aFootball jersey from his collectionin a career that spanned almost 2decades. Unlike in the recentpast, Channa is not headed forany ground for training, instead, heheads to the Dadella CemeteryGrounds, approximately 2 km fromGalle city centre. That too, not toattend a funeral or pay homage toa deceased but, attend to his‘duties’ as a grave digger, whichhas been his lot for the past fourmonths and 11 days. This isChanna’s first job, after committinghimself totally to Football, as a striker for Sri Lankaand with over 8 clubs, both at domestic andinternational level.Unlike the popular playmaker in Football that heonce was, Channa, at present is fully focused onhis new role which, he says, he is enjoying.“I have tried my best tosecure a job and, afterrunning up and down foryears, this is where I finallyended up, at a cemetery. Thisis where we humans come toour eternal rest, and I havecome here when I’m still aliveand a kicking. Many maythink I harbour regrets but Idon’t. At least, I have asecure income to take care ofmy family,” a weather-beaten,yet active and positiveChanna told the SundayTimes. For one who still hassome years of Football left inhim, Channa has donned theSri Lanka jersey over 100times and has played over 800 club games. Hehas scored 53 times for Sri Lanka, of which 13 arerated as FIFA games, and over 500 goals forvarious clubs. In his present occupation he has dug 15 graves. The last being his aunt’s, working together with twoof his colleagues, who well understand Channa’splight. ”As I’m well known for my achievements in

Football, for many, my job is a shame. So, I alwaysmake it a point to shun the public and, wheneverthere is a funeral, my colleagues make sure I don’tcatch anyone’s attention. They know this is mybread and butter now, and I try my utmost to be

just another worker here. Nevertheless, I’mstill active as a Footballer, having alreadyscored 4 goals for the club I represent,” headded. Channa is presently an important cogat Blue Star Football Club, a top ranked sidethat competes in the main competitionsconducted by the Football Federation of SriLanka (FFSL).Since 1998, Channa has been an importantplayer for the country as well as his formerclubs Old Joes, Pettah United, NegomboYouth, Ratnam and Super Sun. He also hasplayed for Maldivian sides Hurriyya Huraa,Victory Male, Maaziya Male and BG Sportsand Dempo SC Goa of India. Why, is an outstanding Footballer like

Channa, digging graves and cleaning graveyards, when he could have secured greener pastures. Was it self inflicted or his own seeking? Was heirresponsible or, was it the lapses within the‘establishment’ in Sri Lanka or, did Channafantasize and make believe the Europe’s Football

system, where players are treated with royalty, descending here sooner or later. ”I really don’tknow how and why I got here.I was just 14 when I was spotted by the Nationalcoaches for an Asian Championship and sincethen, I was part and parcel of Sri Lanka Football. Icompleted my GCE Ordinary Level exam, butdidn’t focus on my studies, as I was totallydedicated to the sport I love. Perhaps, I dreamed a

lot of being a professional player like inEurope, hoping the scenario in Sri Lankatoo would change for the better, with time. When I started playing, Sri Lanka wasranked 123, and now we are ranked 192.That itself shows where we have headedas a sport, leave aside the players,” heexplained.“When Sri Lanka was ranked better in theworld, Channa and some of the otherprominent players were welcomed withopen arms by overseas clubs in the region. They were offered princely sums of aboutUS$ 400 to 500 per month. But with thegradual decline in world rankings, theamounts Sri Lankan Footballers receivedtoo went down proportionately. In addition, the domestic club structure toowas not geared to transform local Footballto at least become semi-professional.””When I started, I received a monthlyallowance of Rs 7,500, while the highestI’ve received was Rs 15,000. Meanwhile, clubsrecruit players but don’t pay as much as one wouldexpect. I grew up and mastered the gamedreaming I would end up a Footballer in the West, where the game is professional. But now, if I don’t

fall ill and attend work daily, I can takehome around Rs 23,000 per month. I alsoget a monthly pay, which is a little morethan my monthly salary from Blue Star tomake things easier. Earlier, I used to playin 7-a-side tournaments on weekends but, with the job I find it difficult to play now,”Channa, whose name was linked to matchfixing at one stage, stated.“I would never betray my jersey, mycountry and the game I love. Ihave been asked by certainindividuals at club level, not toplay in a particular game or,don’t attack too much, but Ihave straightaway told them, they are calling the wrongnumber. I was onceinterrogated by the CID when

they visited my house but, found I hadno role in any misdemeanours. Eventhe player who revealed things, toldthe Police that I’m innocent. I wouldnever do anything like that to tarnishmy image.” Beginning his playingcareer at Vidyaloka College in Galle,he moved to All Saints College also in

the vicinity, dreaming of a bright future in football. He met Mohamed Hashim, an avid Footballpromoter, who guided him towards the correctpathway of the game.As a Footballer, Channa mastered and rose to beone of the best in the country but, as an individual,he has not been a successful man. He partlyblames the FFSL hierarchy for not giving the gameand its players the recognition and benefits itdeserves. As Channa points out, he is not the firstand only National Footballer to find himself ‘atodds’ with life. ”There are many, and of late, likeme. There is another National player, a former SriLanka Youth Captain, who is an attendant at agovernment hospital.

by Indika Welagedara(sundayobserver.lk) Due to a blunder of the SriLanka Schools Rugby Football Association(SLSRFA) in making a wrong draw the Milo inter-school under 18, fifteen-a-side tournament whichwas schedule to be played at Ananda Collegegrounds in Rajagiriya last Friday failed tomaterialize. The reason for this was the SLSRFA placing lastyear’s winners and runners-up in the wronggroups. In last year’s finals it was IsipathanaCollege who were victorious and S. Thomas’College Mount Lavinia finished as runners-up,hence according to the proper method Pathanashould have been placed on top of group ‘A’ andthe Thomians on top of group ‘H’.Instead SLSRFA had placed the Thomians on topof group ‘A’ and Pathana on top of group ‘H’ whichis clearly a ridiculous mistake by theunprofessional SLSRFA officials.Isipathana clearly opposed this silly blunder and acommittee meeting took place on Friday August 19among SLSRFA officials at Lumbini College,Colombo and subsequently the error was rectifiedwith Pathna heading group ‘A’ and the Thomiansgroup ’H’.The Sunday Observer learns that due to this latestchange S.Thomas’ College are considering pullingout of the tournament with immediate effectdespite requesting SLSRFA not to change the

draw from the original groupings. This is the second blunder the SLSRFA havemade within a month. Last month they made amess of deciding the venue for the Schoolsknockout final dilly-dallying their choice of venuesbetween the Royal Sports Complex and theRacecourse grounds.

(sundayobserver.lk) Road accidents havebecome major reason for deaths causing roughly7 deaths each day and not to mention tens ofthousands of motorists, commuters andpedestrians injured. In the light of increasing roaddeaths and road accidents, the STC Class of '82,a group of Old Thomians have come forward withthe goal of cycling round the country with amission to create awareness on road safety, withthe goal of giving back to the society.Globally, a staggering 1.25 million persons dieeach year as a result of road accidents andaccording to the World Health Organization(WHO) road traffic injuries are the leading causeof death among young people, aged 15-29.90% of the world's fatalities on theroads occur in low-and middle-incomecountries, even though these countrieshave approximately half of the world'svehicles. Half of those dying on theworld's road are 'vulnerable road users':pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.Without action, road traffic crashes arepredicted to rise to become the seventhleading cause of death by 2030."Our inaugural cycling tour will kick off in and wehope to cycle all around Sri Lanka in a span of 12days covering close to 1,400 kilometers. Theunique feature behind this is that our main goal isto create awareness in road safety in all themajor cities and thereby prevent road accidentsin the long run", said Dinesh Fernando - thelivewire behind the small group of cyclists whichhas grown to over 50 by now.He added that this would be very much differentfrom any other cycling tour. "We are told that roadaccidents cause nearly 7-8 deaths which arein fact preventable and unfortunately, with more

vehicles entering the roads this rate is bound togo up.The main cause, we are told, is the lack ofawareness amongst cyclists, motorists andpedestrians. Unfortunately, lot of three-wheelerdrivers and bus drivers too are not properlyaware on how to ensure road safety. So we, as aThomian community wanted to give back to oursociety and thought of filling this vacuum whichwill create benefits for all stakeholders byreducing accidents."The main issue which we hope to tackle is thelack of road safety awareness amongst schoolchildren. We would collectively select around five

to six townships from Negombo,Mannar, Jaffna, Trincomalee, Batticaloa,Kataragama, Matara etc. in partnershipwith our respective city sponsors andhold an event with a carnivalatmosphere along with a mobile band todraw crowds in order to createawareness towards our mission. To befair to the sponsors those townshipswould be densely populated cities whereroad safety would be critical and townswhere we can make a greater impact."

The cycling tour would take place from 25thOctober to 5th November 2016. "The cycling tourwill start on the first day from Mutwal whereS.Thomas' College had its humble beginningsand proceed to Kochchikade (Negombo) wherewe stop for the night"."On the first day we would cover only around 40kolometers but from the second day when weride from Kochchikade to Puttlam close toapproximately 100 kilometers would be covered.Third day would be to Silavaturai (Mannar) viaEluwankulam and Wilpattu National Park which isa scenic ride.

(dailynews.lk) DHAKA, FRIDAY: Bangladeshcricket authorities said Friday they have sackedthe national team's assistant coach RuwanKalpage after he failed to report for duty. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had askedSri Lankan Kalpage to join thenational team's conditioningcamp by August 16 ahead of ahome series against England.“We set a deadline for him tojoin, but he did not respond,”BCB chief executive officerNizamuddin Chowdhury toldAFP.“Therefore we decided toterminate his contract,”Chowdhury said.Kalpage had reportedly expressed concerns overhis safety in Bangladesh following an attack by

Islamist extremists on a Dhaka cafe last monththat left 22 people, mostly foreigners, dead. The country has been reeling from months ofgruesome killings of religious minorities andsecular activists, with many of the attacks claimed

by the Islamic State (IS) group. Two other Sri Lankans -- headcoach Chandika Hathurusingheand fitness trainer MarioVillavarayan -- as well asZimbabwean fielding coachRichard Halsall have alreadyjoined the camp, after the BCBprovided them with armedsecurity guards.Kalpage joined Bangladesh as

Presented with a chanceto depart with smiles all round, he took it. It wouldhave been rude not to.

I had verylittle money, but I bought a belt from him afterchatting to him for close to an hour. I haven’t stillworn that belt, though I have kept it within sight athome, as an inspiration, as a reminder there areothers worse off than I am.” Today, Channa livesin a rented place, more or less a shop, inAmbalanwatte, Galle, with his family. I may have made mistakes in my life asan individual. Maybe, I could have managedmyself much better, but in comparison withCricketers and Rugby players, Footballers are thepoorest. Some work andplay, while most are fully into the game, and whenthey call it a day as players, they don’t have aplace in life. I would have loved to obtain acoaching licence, but that too, the FFSL does notgive preference to former National players. Sa’adi Thawfeeq(dailynews.lk) Australia’s drawback against spinwas to some extent nullified when they pulled offa confidence boosting three-wicket win over SriLanka with 19 balls to spare in the first one-dayinternational played under lights at the RPremadasa Stadium yesterday to go one-up inthe five-match series. On a slow grassless pitch Australia put up abrave front against a Sri Lanka bowling attackloaded with five spinners to reach their target of228 using up 46.5 overs.Sri Lanka’s total of 227-8 always looked around30 runs short and so it proved when openerAaron Finch got Australia to a flyer with a 37-ballhalf-century that comprised the only two sixeshit in the match in addition to seven fours. In afirst wicket partnership of 40 Finch outscored hismore aggressive partner David Warner whosecontribution was only eight. The pace that Finch set with Australiaaccelerating at well over six an over, allowed therest of the batters to play under less pressurewithout taking too many risks against thespinners.Defending a small total as 227 Sri Lankaneeded wickets, but despite playing a surfeit ofspinners they managed to prize out only sevenAustralian batsmen with one of them beingtaken by the medium-pace of Thisara Perera.Full credit to Australia for coming back stronglyin the first match of a new series after beingwhitewashed 0-3 in the three Test matches.Taking the cue from Finch after his dismissal for56 was Australian captain Steve Smith whoplayed a workmanlike role to score 58 off 92 ballsbefore being dismissed with Australia requiring 38to win.Smith figured in two important partnerships of 49

with Mathew Wade (26) and 62 with Bailey (39).Their dismissals triggered off a mini collapsewhere Australia lost four wickets for 32 off 46balls to slump to 222-7, but Man of the MatchJames Faulkner and Mitchell Starc with five runs apiece saw them throughwithout any further alarms.Although the pitch was tailor made for spin,

Australia whose strength was their fast bowlerspicked four seamers headed by the indomitableMitchell Starc who became the fastest bowler toreach 100 ODI wickets when he dismissedDhananjaya de Silva for two.Starc playing in his 52nd ODI broke Pakistan leg-spinner Saqlian Mushtaq’s 19-year-old record bygetting to the milestone in one match less.Starc as he had often done during the Test series

gave Australia an early wicket when offthe fourth ball of the match hemanaged to get through the defence ofKusal Perera to bowl him off stump forone. Starc went onto take threewickets for 32 in 10 tidy overs, butFaulkner who won the Man of theMatch in Australia’s successful World

Cup final against New Zealand didit again for his team picking upfour wickets for 38 that more orless put the brakes on the Lankanrun rate. The Australian seam attack pickedup all eight wickets Sri Lankanwickets to fall and all credit tothem for doing to. They kepteverything tight and didn’t allow SriLanka’s free scoring batsmen theliberty to get easy runs. Thebowlers bowled to their field andslowed their pace down whichmeant most of the strokes thatshould have found the boundaryinstead ended up with the fielder.Sri Lanka’s total was made up oftwo fine half-centuries from KusalMendis and Dinesh Chandimalwho put on 79 for the third wicket.Mendis struck six fours in his 95-ball knock for 67 – his fourth fifty

from eight ODIs and Chandimal takinga painful blow on his ribcage fromMoises Henriques batted bravely aftertreatment on the field to remain 80 notout scored off 118 balls – his fifthconsecutive ODI fifty and 20th overall.Chandimal did not take the field during theAustralian innings and a precautionary X’rayrevealed no fracture.

Sri Lanka capped two spinners LakshanSandakan and Amila Aponso – both of whom tooktheir maiden ODI wickets during the match.
