The Ministry of Culture organized apaper reading session on archaeologicalevidences at its office in Nay Pyi Taw on 4July.

The findings of the archaeologicalresearch are believed to add to the Myanmarhistory.

Doing archaeological research on theMyanmar history from the origin of the raceto date through the prehistoric period andPyu Period, we have been able to discover theorigin of Myanmar people who were bornand who migrated from one place to anotherin the Myanmar soil, along with the Myanmarcivilization.

Myanmar archaeological experts andinternational primate experts carried out jointresearch in order to prove the proposal “Theorigin of Myanmar is Myanmar”. They havebeen working together yearly to find out thefossilized remains of Pontaung primates inPontaung rock layers.

The findings of the primates on theStone Age, the Bronze Age and the Iron Agegained from the archaeological research inMeiktila and Yamethin districts over the pastdecade are some evidences for the BronzeAge and the Iron Age as well as for theMyanmar culture and history.

Not only Myanmar but also foreignexperts participated in the paper readingsession. So, the advice, suggestions and queriesby experts and researchers, and the responsesby resource persons are profound evidencesfor the Myanmar history.

Our brains are more like birds’ thanwe thought

Chicken

SAN DIEGO, 6 July — For more thana century, neuroscientists believed thatthe brains of humans and othermammals differed from the brains ofother animals, such as birds (and sowere presumably better). This beliefwas based, in part, upon the readilyevident physical structure of theneocortex, the region of the brainresponsible for complex cognitivebehaviors.

A new study, however, byresearchers at the University ofCalifornia, San Diego School of

Medicine finds that a comparableregion in the brains of chickensconcerned with analyzing auditoryinputs is constructed similarly to thatof mammals.

“And so ends, perhaps, this claimof mammalian uniqueness,” saidHarvey J Karten, MD, professor in theDepartment of Neurosciences atUCSD’s School of Medicine, and leadauthor of the study, published thisweek in the Proceedings of theNational Academy of Sciences OnlineEarly Edition.

Generally speaking, the brains ofmammals have long been presumedto be more highly evolved anddeveloped than the brains of otheranimals, in part based upon thedistinctive structure of the mammalianforebrain and neocortex — a part ofthe brain’s outer layer where complexcognitive functions are centred.

Australian scientists discover DNApest-detection technique

BRISBANE, 6 July—Molecular biologist JaneOakey revealed onTuesday Queenslandscientists are using DNAtechniques to identifyoutbreaks of exoticpests and weeds.

DNA tests are usedto prove the existenceof pest animals ratherthan looking for the pestitself, she said.

Dr Oakey said oftenthe pests were too smallto see or lived in

environments that weredifficult to get to, suchas underneath largeboats.

“It’s been effectivewith the Asian greenmussels in Cairns,” shetold AustralianAssociated Press.

She said scientiststested plankton for theAsian green mussels ‘DNA from watersamples gathered bydragging a big netaround the port.

“The mussels growextremely quickly ...they make a mess of thebottom of boats and theyout-compete the nativemarine fauna,” she said.

Oakey said the DNApest-detection tech-nique could also beapplied to land pests.

E–books reading takes longer time than paperBEIJING, 6 July—It

takes a longer time toread books on a Kindle2 or an iPad compared toprinted pages, accordingto a recent study byproduct developmentconsultancy NielsenNorman Group.

US media reportedMonday that 24participants were givenshort stories by ErnestHemingway to read inprint and on iPads,Kindles. After reading, participants filled out abrief comprehensionquestionnaire to makesure no one hadskimmed through astory.

Overall, it took each

reader an average of 17minutes and 20 secondsfrom start to finish —enough time to getreaders fully“immersed” in thestories, Nielsenexplained.

The study found thatreading speeds declinedby 6.2 percent on theiPad and 10.7 percenton the Kindle comparedto print.

However, Nielsenconceded that thedifferences in the readingspeed between the twodevices were not“statistically significantbecause of the data’sfairly high variability”

Users also rated their

satisfaction with eachdevice. the iPad, Kindleand printed book scored5.8, 5.7 and 5.6, on ascale of 7, respectively.

The satisfactionratings on the survey arepromising for e-readermakers. However, giventhe reading speedcontrast, it was still tooearly to say printedbooks would be largelyreplaced by e-books inthe near future, Nielsennoted.—Xinhua

Brazilian consumer confidenceremains high, survey shows

BRASILIA, 6 July—Brazilian consumersremain optimistic aboutpersonal income, inflat-ion, personal debt andthe financial situation oftheir country, said asurvey released by theNational Confederationof Industry (CNI) onMonday.

The positiveexpectations ofconsumers reached 114.6points, on a fixed basis of100 points (above whichindicates optimism), 4.1percent higher than thesame month last year, the

National Index ofConsumer Expectationshowed. The latestreading is also higher thanthe historical average of109 points.

There was improve-ment especially in theexpectation of fallinginflation and reducinghousehold debt. Howe-ver, optimism related toemployment and expect-ation of higher-valuepurchases has decreased.

According to FlavioCastelo Branco, CNImanager of economicpolicy, the result is

positive because thelower confidence relatedto employment can bejust an adjustment.

“In May thisindicator rose a lot, andthen the fall can be justan adjustment or even asingle event like theWorld Cup, for example. And confidence inpersonal financialsituation remained high, which means that therecent increase in interestrate did not impact onthe financial conditionof consumers,” he said.

Dr Andre E Nel of the David Geffen School ofMedicine at the University of California, LosAngeles, and colleagues said ultrafine particles areprimarily from vehicular emissions and are foundin highest concentrations along freeways.
