KABUL, 31 July —In a summer of suffering,America’s military death toll in Afghanistan isrising, with back-to-back record months for USlosses in the grinding conflict. All signs point tomore bloodshed in the months ahead, straining thealready shaky international support for the war.

Six more Americans were reported killed infighting in the south — three Thursday and threeFriday — pushing the US death toll for July to arecord 66 and surpassing June as the deadliestmonth for US forces in the nearly nine-year war.

US officials confirmed the latest Americandeaths Friday but gave no further details. Five ofthe latest reported deaths were a result of hiddenbombs — the insurgents’ weapon of choice — andthe sixth to an armed attack, NATO said instatements.

US commanders say American casualties aremounting because more troops are fighting — andthe Taleban are stiffening resistance as NATO andAfghan forces challenge the militants in areas theycan’t afford to give up without a fight.

“Recent months in Afghanistan have seen toughfighting and tough casualties. This was expected,”the top US and NATO commander, Gen DavidPetraeus, said at his Senate confirmation hearinglast month. “My sense is that the tough fightingwill continue; indeed, it may get more intense inthe next few months.”—Internet

Antarctica experiment discoverspuzzling space ray pattern

WISCONSIN, 31 July—A puzzling pattern in thecosmic rays bombarding Earth from space has beendiscovered by an experiment buried deep under the iceof Antarctica. Cosmic rays are highly energeticparticles streaming in from space that are thought tooriginate in the distant remnants of dead stars.

But it turns out these particles are not arrivinguniformly from all directions. The new study detectedan overabundance of cosmic rays coming from onepart of the sky, and a lack of cosmic rays coming fromanother.

This odd pattern was detected by the IceCubeNeutrino Observatory, an experiment still underconstruction that is actually intended to detect otherexotic particles called neutrinos. In fact, scientistshave gone out of their way to try to block out all signalsfrom cosmic rays in order to search for the highlyelusive neutrinos, which are much harder to find.

tablet are heating up by the day, with Bloombergnow claiming that the BlackPad — yes, the BlackPad— will arrive in November, complete with an iPad-size screen and the ability to connect to the Internetvia either Wi-Fi or your Bluetooth-connectedBlackBerry.

Citing a pair of anonymous sources “familiarwith the company’s plans,” Bloomberg says thetablet will indeed be called the BlackPad (whichwould presumably explain BlackBerry-maker RIM’srecent acquisition of “BlackPad.com”) and wouldboast a display that’s “roughly” the same size as theiPad’s 9.7-inch screen. Rather than having its own, embedded 3G radio, the BlackPad would rely onWi-Fi or Bluetooth tethering to your BlackBerry toconnect to the Internet, Bloomberg’s tipsters claim— a nifty trick. I sure wish I could tether the iPad tomy iPhone for 3G data.

The article doesn’t go into detail about whatkind of processor would power the rumouredBlackPad, or whether it would run on the revampedBlackBerry OS 6 (which seems likely). It did note, however, that the BlackPad’s pricing would be “inline” with that of the iPad, which starts at $499 forthe 16GB Wi-Fi-only version.

Several details of the Bloomberg story are atodds with what we heard from one wireless analystearlier this month, who predicted that the BlackBerrytablet would come with built-in Wi-Fi and a smaller,7-inch display.—Internet

School offers differentpath to medicine

NEW YORK, 31 July—A number ofstudents are pursuing medical schoolthrough a programme that bypasses“hard science” prerequisites and rigor-ous entrance tests, educators say.

The Humanities and Medicine Pro-gramme at the Mount Sinai medicalschool in Manhattan offers places toabout 35 undergraduates a year if theystudy humanities or social sciences in-stead of the traditional pre-medicalschool curriculum, and maintain a 3.5grade-point average, The New YorkTimes reported on Friday. For genera-tions of pre-med students, the traditionalpath has always been organic chemis-try, physics and the Medical College Ad-mission Test, known by its dread-induc-ing acronym, the MCAT, the Times said.

NEW YORK, 31 July—Despite studies suggest-ing that birth control pillsmight not work as well inobese women, a newstudy suggests that theyprevent pregnancy thesame no matter what awoman weighs.

As long as a woman-heavy or thin—took thepill consistently, DrCarolyn L Westhoff of

Columbia UniversityMedical Centre in NewYork City and her col-leagues found, it pre-vented her ovaries fromproducing eggs. Westhoffand her team report theirfindings in the August is-sue of Obstetrics &Gynecology. Studies havefound that obese womenare 30 to 40 percent morelikely to get pregnantwhile taking the pill thanwere normal-weightwomen taking it, perhapsbecause excess weightmight blunt its effective-ness. Overall contracep-tion failure rates are esti-mated between 2 and 8percent per year.

NEW YORK, 31 July –Pregnant women with ahistory of pregnancy-re-lated diabetes, also calledgestational diabetes, havea good chance of develop-ing the condition again, suggests a large new study.Researchers found that therisk of having gestationaldiabetes during a futurepregnancy increases witheach previously affectedone — from 41 percent

Gestational diabetestypically strikes duringlate pregnancy and ischaracterized by highblood sugar that resultsfrom the body’s impaireduse of insulin. While itrarely causes birth de-fects, complications canarise that threaten the
