Polio, also called poliomyelitis, is a conta-gious viral disease. There are three types ofpolio, namely, abortive polio, nonparalytic polioand paralytic polio. Children who have abortivepolio or nonparalytic polio usually make a fullrecovery. However, paralytic polio can damagethe nervous system and cause paralysis.

Polio is most common in infants and youngchildren and it is preventable by immunization. There are two types of polio vaccine and they areoral polio vaccine (OPV) and inactivated poliovaccine (IPV) and experts say that OPV is moreeffective in preventing the spread of polio virus.

Myanmar has been working towards eradi-cating polio since 1996, holding the nationalimmunization days twice a year and feedingpolio vaccine to children under five. Myanmarhas now vaccinated at least 95 per cent of itschildren under five. Polio mainly affects chil-dren under three years of age and it is importantto continue vaccinating kids against polio.

The last case of wild polio was reported inMyanmar in 2000. Then, there had been no casesof the disease for three successive years. There-fore, Myanmar was recognized as polio-freecountry by a regional committee on 13 Febru-ary, 2003.

But in May this year, there was a case of ahighly infectious polio caused by a virus likewild-type polio virus in PyinOoLwin Township,Mandalay Division. As the disease is likely torear its head in our polio-free county, it has beenplanned to continue feeding OPV to children ineach and every region on national immunizationdays to check the spread of the virus timely.

This year, 3 September and 1 October havebeen designated as national immunization daysand more than two million children in 80 town-ships in Mandalay, Magway and Sagaing Divi-sions and Shan State (North) and Kachin Statewill be given polio vaccine. We believe that theentire people will take an active part in nationalimmunization activities region-wise in order thatall their children can be healthy and their nationcan remain a polio-free country.

Continue working towards apolio-free country

Indonesia says to seedcloud to douse forest fires

JAKARTA, 30 Aug— Indonesia will carry out cloudseeding this week to help extinguish forest fires, butplans to use cargo planes to drop water bombs on theflames have been ditched because of a lack ofequipment, officials said on Monday.

Indonesia has been under pressure fromneighbours Singaporte and Malaysia to deal withrecurring forest fores in Sumatra and Borneo thatspread a thick haze across the region, deterring touristsand causing health problems.

"Our target is that the hotspots could disappear bythe 2nd (of September). If not all, at least the significanthaze would not be there any more," InformationMinister Sofyan Djalil told a news conference.

A continuing flare-up in the fires in coming dayscould be embarrassing for Indonesian President SusiloBambang Yudhoyono, who is due to attend a summitin Singapore on 4 September.

The island state near Sumatra frequently suffersfrom the haze caused by Indonesian forest fires.

Research Minister Kusmayanto Kadiman toldreporters cargo planes would start dropping salt toinduce rain via cloud-seeding on Tuesday but a plan tobomb the hotspots with water had been shelved.

Study shows ovarian cancermore aggressive in obese women

LONDON, 30 Aug—Research has suggestedthat obese women are lesslikely to survive ovariancancer than those ofnormal weight, accordingto national newspaper TheGuardian on Tuesday.

The research done byUS scientists suggestedfor the first time that awoman's weight can affectthe course of the disease.

Those who are obesenot only have lowersurvival rates, but thecancer recurs sooner aftertreatment and they face anearlier death than womenwho are diagnosed at theirideal body weight.

The research wasreportedly the first toidentify weight as anindependent factor inovarian cancer disease

progression and overallsurvival, suggesting thatthere is an element in thefat tissue itself thatinfluences the outcome ofthis disease in obesewomen.

In the study, theresearchers compared theprogression of the diseasein 216 women, 35 ofwhom were obese, and108 were of ideal weight.

The scientists discoveredthat in addition to theirfindings on mortality andrecurrence of the disease, the cells of the tumoursappeared different.

“While further mole-cular studies are war-ranted, our study suggeststhat fat tissue excretes ahormone or protein thatcauses ovarian cancer cellsto grow more aggres-

sively,” Andrew Li, thestudy’s principal investi-gator, was quoted assaying.

The next steps will beto examine this re-lationship more closely, and to determine the exactbiological mechanismsthat influence tumourgrowth in ovarian cancer,Li said.
