ESSEX RUNNING CLUB NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER 1985 DECEMBER MEETING - MONDAY, DECEMBER 2, 1985 At: Beefsteak Charlie's, 464 Eagle Rock Avenue, West Orange 7:00 PM - Come early - Dinner orders can be placed, trade war stories, get to know each other, lie about your running feats (feets), have a good time. 8:00 PM - Meeting begins. Speaker: Michael Rebarber. MBR ORTHODICS, INC. Ridgewood, NJ. A CERTIFIED ORTHODIST will talk to the group about "foot problems" and the corrective devises and measures that can be taken to correct these ailments. If you have ever lost training time due to a foot injury, or wondered why your running shoes always wear out in one particular spot, come listen to Michael, he will "straighten you out". You are not seeing double, Michael couldn't make last month's meeting, but will be ready on December 2nd. HIGHLIGHTS OF OUR NOVEMBER 4TH MEETING The meeting began with a short review of upcoming Club Races and Group Runs. Not too many people seemed interested in getting together for a Club Race in December. This is understandable since most of our time will be spent planning for the holidays and buying presents for each other. As a result, no official Club Races will be on the agenda. Group Fun Runs on Sunday mornings will begin on November 17, 1985 and continue through the winter. The schedule for these runs can be found later on in this newsletter. George Mclntyre updated the group on how it felt to win a race. This is the 5th time he has been an overall winner of a roadrace this year - truly incredible, considering his advanced years and incomparably unorthodox running style. In his latest victory, George collected a VCR as a first.prize. Unfortunately, the VCR doesn't work and George dropped out of Electronics School, so if anyone can lend a hand, please let George know. Who knows, maybe he'll let you in on his secret for choosing races. GOOD JOB GEORGE! Our speaker was Stu Mittleman, an ultra-distance racer from NYC. Stu was kind enough to address our group at a moments notice and we were lucky enough to catch him in-between his six hour work out periods. Stu is currently the holder of six American records and has run 577 3/4 miles for the six day run and 12 hours and 56 minutes for 100 miles. Stu talked about the special training required for ultra distance racing such as: Breaking the year down into four 3 month segments of either 100-120 M.P.W. or six hours/day of 30 miles per day. With this kind of "Excessive Moderation" as Stu describes his training, its no wonder that a special diet is required. Surprisingly, Stu's diet is FAT based although carbohydrates do make up a healthy portion of his menu as well. Linseed oil, butter, egg yolks, wheat germ oil, whole grain breads, pasta and cereals are all part of the successful ultra distance runners program for sustained health.

I guess we've all heard this before, but Larry Hollander felt itimportant enough to submit this article - "Don't put all your eggsone basket."

Study of 80 by PsychologistFinds Addiction a Problem

— It Can Affect Mood

By SANDRA BLAKESLEESpecial to Tlte New York Times

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 27 — Joggingmeets many deep-seated psychoipgicalneeds that most runners are ijtA con¬scious of until they are prevented fromrunning, according to a new study de¬scribed here today at the annual con¬vention of the American PsychologicalAdiQfviatifitl:

V About 14,000 psychologists attendedthe five-day meeting, which ended to-day.

Many people begin running simply toget exercise, but they end up runningfor far more complex reasons, said Dr.Connie Chan, an assistant professbr atjthe University of Massachuasets whoconducted the study, "I'm a runnermyself ," Dr. Chan said, "and more andjnofe I began tor notice a markedchange in people who had to stop run¬ning" because of running-related in-Juries.

¦ To evaluate those changes. Dr. Chandesigned a study using two groups; 40runners who had to give up running fortwo weeks to recuperate from injuryand 40 who continued running a mini¬mum of 3A miles a week over thosesame two weeks.

Tests Measure MoodAt the aid of 'the period, Dr. Chan

gave both groups a set of atandardwedpsychological reata thiat evaluatedjiiood, depression and self-esteetovThose prevarted from running, shefound, were significantly niore de-pressed, anxious, tense and conluaeathad active nuiners. They were signifi¬cantly less vigorous and suffered fromgreater overall mood disturbance.

"The surprise," Dr. Chan said, "wasat the extent of . these changes, Ithought there would, be some but idldin expect such dramatic signincance in how terrible they felt."

Those prevented from running, shesaid, imagined their bodies had fallalapart after Just two weeks, of no run¬ning. Substitute exercise such as swiBpming, biking and hiking did hot providemany of them with, the psychologicalbenefits of running. ¦

Ap addiction, Dr. Chan said, issomething you cannot dp without, add- iink, "Even when it's not healthy foryou dp it, you continue doing it." Run-'ning canflt this description, she said.

For the joggers in the study, runninghad become their only coping mech¬anism for reducing stress, combatingdepression and elevating mood, shesaid. In this regard, the runners are notpsychologically healthy, she said."They put all thpir eggs in one basket, she said, "Notmng else satisfies themWhen they aw deprived, they aredevastated."

The more people run, she said, themore likely they are to suffer runninginjuries such as tendinitis or knee prob¬lems. Thus compulsive runners shouldbe cognizant of their dependence onrunning, she said, so that if they areever deprived of running they willknow how important that loss can be totheir mental health.
