This year, Schools’ Personnel Service in partnership with Leadership and Governance held a special event for those taking up September headships, focused on planning a leadership strategy for day one and beyond.

Attending with their Chairs of Governors, new Headteachers had an opportunity to consider together what needs to happen to ensure a true, joined-up approach to leadership. There was time to get to know each other and enjoy facilitated discussion about their school’s priorities and those all-important first steps en route to realising their shared vision. The day also served as a chance to reflect on the experience, insights and challenges encountered by other schools and hear solutions from new found Headship colleagues.

Inspirational speakers sharing valuable insights from their experience as Headteachers, Governors and National School Leaders. The day addressed key leadership themes from leading learning to bringing people with you and a focus on strategic leadership. We also benefited from a wonderfully candid and witty talk from a new Headteacher, sharing the alumni perspective.

When asked if the event supported their preparations for headship the delegates gave a resounding YES! And Governors also found the day supportive, welcoming the opportunity to share ideas with their new leaders as a starting point for planning together, away from the hurly burly of the first weeks in post.

In fact one Governor, a national leader of governance, suggested including deputies and other senior leaders, those aspiring to Headship in future sessions, to support and aid their career development. This would provide valuable feedback to inform the growth and development of this programme through the coming months and years.

All events take place at Chilston Park Hotel, Lenham near Maidstone and include insights and input from SPS, Leadership and Governance and esteemed external speakers.

SAFER RECRUITMENT

Making the right recruitment decisions is one of the most important choices made in an organisation. Ensuring the person is capable, available and will be a good fit are only a few of the factors to be taken into consideration.

But when that organisation is a school or academy, and staff and volunteers are working with children and young people, the notion of the right person has added significance and it is vital that schools create a culture of safe practice, and this includes making the right recruitment decisions.

Safer recruitment is an important strand of child protection and safeguarding, and this full-day course explores safer recruitment practices (as outlined in Keeping Children Safe in Education) which help to deter or reject people unsuitable to work with children, be it because of a lack of skills, the right attitude, or at worst questionable motives.

It also examines the need for ongoing awareness and vigilance and how you can develop and maintain an environment that challenges inappropriate behaviour, developing and fostering

14 Back to Menu

a culture of safe practice, and responding positively and swiftly to any causes for concern.

Certified by the Safer Recruitment Consortium – the national partnership between NSPCC, Lucy Faithfull Foundation, NASS and CAPE – this course and our registered trainers will present the very latest in best practice.

As delegates, on completion of a short assessment (reflecting the session outline and group discussion) you will receive a nationally recognised certificate.

This certificate and the Safer Recruitment Consortium logo serves to assure the quality of the course.

Remember it is a requirement for all Headteachers and at least one member of a recruitment panel to be appropriately trained in safer recruitment and it is considered good practice that this is renewed to stay abreast of statutory updates and developments in procedure.

360° Feedback

It is vital for staff, particularly SLT and those aspiring to leadership, to receive regular, honest feedback on their performance, and understand how their role drives school improvement, both in respect of their own performance by engaging the efforts of their staff and teams. 360 degree feedback can enhance this process by widening the scope for information from the line manager relationship to embrace a wider range of input – peers, appraisee/staff etc.

Schools’ Personnel ServiceSpecialist advice and support

for schools and academies

Alongside our collection of open courses we are also available and keen to work with schools on specific projects to the benefit of individuals, teams, staff groups and,

of course, the school as a whole.

If your school, Collaboration and/or Federation has a specific requirement, please contact your designated consultant and we will be happy to

discuss your needs, draw up a proposal for your consideration and deliver an informative and

interactive session on your chosen theme.

18 Back to Menu

Over the last year alone we have successfully delivered the following sessions, positively impacting on individuals and schools ...

Safer Recruitment Awareness Sessions

While a core number of designated Governors and School Leaders need to have attended the full-day certified course to support their role on a recruitment panel, we recognise that there are obvious benefits from raising awareness of the issues more widely among School Leaders and keeping them informed of the schools’ responsibilities. This session, though unaccredited, will provide an introduction to safer recruitment practice for governing bodies and indeed wider School Leaders.

Exploring Strategies to Manage Stress

In the last six years the number of working days lost to stress, depression and anxiety has increased by 24%, with one in five people taking a day off work due to stress.

Indeed the Health and Safety Executive reports 45% of absence in the education sector is stress related. We recognise that the impact of stress can extend far beyond the individual, affecting the wider team, school as a whole and, of course, pupils.

This half-day workshop, delivered as part of school INSET focuses on the following key themes:

• A spotlight on ‘Stress’ – What is it (how it differs from the general pressures of day-to-day life)? How would I know if I ‘have’ it? And why does it affect everyone differently?

Handling Difficult conversations

Following the success of the Deputy Heads’ Conference, we are pleased to be able to offer to senior and middle leaders an informative one-hour workshop on handling difficult conversations. Whilst School Leaders are no strangers to dealing with the pressures and challenges of school life, such as the changes in curriculum and assessment, the prospect of being ambushed by difficult staffing issues is often a source of dread, distracting attention from teaching and learning.

This hour-long workshop, designed to fit within a team meeting, will share some very practical steps you can take to handle dificult conversations more easily, helping you to do so confidently, at a time that’s right for you and working towards the outcomeyou want.

And finally ...

We can adapt any of our Management Essentials courses for your school. This can be a very cost-effective way of providing training for a group of staff, and will focus on questions and issues specific to your school and the group’s training needs. There is also the opportunity to maximise your investment further and spread the cost by joining up with a neighbouring school.

• Recognising the warning signs – What are the signs and symptoms of stress? What’s happening to the body? And what’s the long-term impact on health?

• Identifying personal strategies and skills for managing stress – what can we do to support ourselves and colleagues in a better way and build resilience?

How do I book my chosen course?

All courses need to be booked via CPD online – www.kentcpdonline.org.uk. Please click on your chosen course date within this brochure to be redirected to the relevant booking page on CPD online. Alternatively you can visit the site itself and search for your chosen course via course title and/or date.

What time does the course start/finish?

All courses start promptly at 9:00 with refreshments and registration from 8:30.*

Full-day courses finish at 15:00 and half-day courses finish at 12:45.

All courses include lunch.

* Safer recruitment finishes later at 16:30.

Will I get the latest policy updates?

Absolutely! All courses refer to the latest policy updates – both national and statutory guidelines, e.g. Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document as well as local model and procedures and industry best practice.

How frequently are courses delivered?

Whilst the frequency varies courses are delivered at our three venues – east, mid and west Kent at least once each year.

Safer recruitment courses, are held monthly, so too are our appraisal courses maximising the opportunity for school leaders and managers to access the training and fulfil both statutory compliance and, in the case of appraisal, their appraisal responsibilities, and by doing so releasing some capacity of SLT.

What happens if I am unable to attend mybooked course?

If you are unable to attend your chosen course please make contact with the office on 03000 419552 to discuss next steps. Generally speaking if you are unable to attend owing to an emergency, an Ofsted visit for example, we will happily transfer your booking to a future date or alternative course.

What else can we expect for the year ahead?

We have a full programme of some 90 courses on offer to schools over the course of 2015-16 from our Power Hour and Insight Series and our Management Essentials programme.

Dates are released at the beginning of each double term—Terms 1&2, 3&4 and 5&6; but please do keep an eye on our website for updates, articles and news of special events.

We hope this brochure has piqued your CPD interest and look forward to welcoming you onto a course in the future.

Page 26: essential training brochure...essential training brochure Terms 3 & 4 January - March 2016 Schools’ Personnel Service Specialist advice and support for schools and academies Hello,

www.the-sps.co.uk

Upon being appointed as Acting Headteacher I made it an absolute priority to ensure there was a robust performance appraisal cycle in place for my team. To be able to facilitate this I attended the ‘Appraisal for Appraisers’ course as I had not previously carried out appraisals for multiple members of staff.

The course, led by Summer Macer, was highly engaging and gave me an in-depth understanding of performance appraisal. Course materials were detailed and abundant, and there were a variety of methods used to tease out answers from the attendees. We were also challenged to consider action points for the following day, following week and the following three months. Summer’s delivery of the course was outstanding.

Following the course I organised a staff INSET day dedicated to performance appraisal and I am pleased to say that we now have a robust cycle in place. All staff have targets which link to the Development Plan and it is clear that people feel more empowered, and more valued, knowing that they’re working towards shared and personal goals throughout the year.
