Countdown to Rummageps

Interim Senior Pastor Called: The Executive Committee, Personnel Committee and Council are pleased to introduce our Interim Senior Pastor – Reverend Ben Bishop. Ben embodies the characteristics, experience and skills we seek for this role. He

has extensive pastoral and interim experience in Presbyterian, UCC and independent churches (Kenilworth Union) over the past 18 years. Interestingly, Ben has quite a bifurcated career. After graduating from the University of Illinois in 1965, he pursued a 25 year career in Advertising. He faced a personal pivot point in 1992 that led him to McCormick Theological Seminary and his subsequent pastoral career. Ben is known as “faithful minister” with a “healing presence.” Germane to our Interim role, we learned he has a “heart for ministry and a head for business.” He is a strong worship leader and a “natural Adult Ed teacher.” He is particularly strong working with existing staff members and congregational leadership. Ben is called to WCC and we enthusiastically welcome him and his wife, Sue. A full write up is linked under the 2020 Vision tab on the website and provides considerable detail on Ben’s career and skills. He will be more formally introduced to the congregation in June.

The WCC Women's Society is seeking a responsible person to digitize the card catalog of the Tyrrell Library in Tolman Hall and set up a system where new additions can be entered by computer. This transition from paper record keeping to on-line access will make the library's collection more available to all church members. This is a job for a volun-teer with technical skills and devotion to the church. It can be done from home or at the library, and might be valu-able as a volunteer project on a job resume or college ap-plication. Please contact Laurie Morse at 847-835-4123 for more information.

April 27Dr. Melvyn Schwartz returns us to our highly acclaimed winter series on Thank God for Evolution and discusses a Mathematical Foundation for Belief in God.

Easter Egg Hunt On Easter Sunday, April 20, there will be an Easter Egg hunt for all children between the 9 and 11am services. We will start the hunt at 10:30am. Weather permitting.

On Tuesday, April 8 the Council agreed to have the 2020 Vision team share the latest, and nearly final, strategic plan revision with the Congregation. They will do this through small groups and after-service listening sessions over the next four weeks. Please see Jeanne Ebersole or Brad McLane, or contact them at [email protected] or [email protected] to arrange a 2020 team member to attend your group meeting. There will also be an online survey to provide feedback. The goal of Council and the 2020 Vision Team is to present the final plan to the Congregation for approval at the May 4 congregation meeting.

Join Servants on Sunday, April 27th for two exciting events: Youth Sunday and Fiesta del Sol! Servants, our high school ministry will be leading a very special worship that morning at 10am. Following worship, you are invited to join us for Fiesta del Sol in Alsdorf activities center where there will be

a meal and an opportunity for you to learn more about our mission trip experi-ence. We hope you will join us for both events!

A Purse for Joseph

As we prepare for Joseph’s retirement from WCC, we are planning many wonderful ways to say thank you and goodbye. We hope you have all received invitations to the three different events on April 25, May 16 and June 1. In addition, we plan to offer Joseph and Leslie some gifts of appreciation at each event. It is part of our tradition to also offer our minister’s the gift of a purse – a collection of donations from members of the congregation which offer our apprecia-tion. We would like to present a purse to Joseph on Sunday, June 1st. If you would like to contribute, please send a check to our accountant, Doug Coulter at WCC with “Joe’s purse” in the memo line. Joseph and Leslie plan to split most of their time between Ireland and Roatan, Honduras in retirement and we know this purse will go a long way in helping them to settle into their new homes.

Two weeks ago, 23 high school students and six adults traveled to the Dominican Republic to continue working in partnership with a church that has sites in and around Gaspar Hernandez. We continued work to help build a community center, helped to run a day camp for children in the community, and were able to spend a great deal of time building and continuing relation-ships with the Dominicans, as well as within our group. We worked, played, laughed, were challenged, and learned much. We had an opportunity to live into God’s story of love, and to glimpse how powerful that love can be when people come together as the body of Christ. We thank you again for your support to help make the trip happen! We look forward to sharing more about the trip with you on Youth Sunday and during Fiesta del Sol, both of which will be April 27th.

Temple Jeremiah's Green Team and Brotherhood invite you to come join us for an afternoon of hands-on environmental volunteering. May 4th at 1:30pm we will be removing invasive garlic mustard plants at the River Trails Nature Center, 3120 Milwaukee Ave. in Northbrook. A Special Viewing of the Docu-mentary Terra Blight in honor of Earth Day Free of charge

April 22nd at 7pm. What happens to that computer or iPhone that we toss after upgrading to a new device! Join Temple Jeremiah’s Green Team to find out as we view the award-winning documentary Terra Blight, followed by opportunities to take action to help solve the problem addressed in the documentary. All are welcome; feel free to pass this information along to others who may be interested. Terra Blight is a 55-minute documentary exploring America’s consumption of computers and the hazardous waste we create in pursuit of the latest technology. This film traces the life cycle of computers from creation to disposal and juxtaposes the disparate worlds that have computers as their center. From a 13-year-old Ghanaian who smashes obsolete monitors to salvage copper to a 3,000-person video game party in Texas, Terra Blight examines the unseen realities of one of the most ubiquitous toxic wastes on our planet. By the film’s end, you will never look at your computer the same way again. Questions? Contact Barry Slot-nick, [email protected]. We hope you will join us for this informative and engaging event.
