Essendon Fields has hosted aviation activities since 1921 and was a base for Australia’s rapidly growing civil aviation industry, operating as Melbourne’s international airport from 1950 until 1970.

Since the 1970s Essendon Airport operated as a general aviation facility and today hosts regular passenger transport, charters and tourist flights, emergency services, freight and private aircraft.

1937 Mrs Jean Burns obtains her pilots license and later that year became the first Australian woman to jump from an aeroplane, descending 3,200ft over Essendon Airport

1940 The first Air Traffic Controllers are appointed

1948 LaManna family arrives from Italy as new immigrants, 62 years later they would open LaManna Supermarket just metres from the airport terminal

1950 Federal Cabinet declares Essendon Airport an international airport and renamed Melbourne Airport

1954 Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II lands at Essendon Airport for her Australian Royal Tour

1956 Melbourne Olympic Games - airport staff directed 206 International flights down safely during one week

1964 The Beatles land at Essendon Airport during their Australian Concert Tour and are greeted by 5,000 screaming fans

1966 American President Lyndon B Johnson arrives in Air Force One for Harold Holt’s memorial service.

1970 International operations transferred from Essendon Airport to Tullamarine

1987 Kylie Minogue films her first ever music video for her debut single “Locomotion” at Essendon Airport

2001 Fox and Beck Families acquired a 99-year lease for Essendon Airport with a goal of re-establishing the property as a vibrant commercial and aviation facility

2008 Mrs Jean Burns unveils Burns Street, which was named in her honour

2009 The new Victorian Government emergency services hangars officially open

2017 Hyatt Place Hotel and Events Centre opens, the first Hyatt Place in Australia

Airport changes its name to Essendon Fields Airport

2018 Essendon Fields Airport and Runway Plaza, now Essendon Fields Central, commence a multi-million dollar upgrade.

2021 Essendon Fields will celebrate its centenary
