    THE

ESSENCEOF GODAnd The Word WasMade Flesh

by: Pastor Apollo C. QuiboloyThe Appointed Son Of God

ISRAEL WAS PROMISED A COMING REDEEMER

he history of Israel depicts how the Almighty Father was trying to bring them from one level ofrevelation to another. They were provided from with the commandments, patriarchs, kings and

prophets, all in an attempt to extricate the serpent seed (spirit of disobedience to the Will of the AlmightyFather) lurking within their souls, hiding under the cloak of religious zeal.

As early as the days of the exodus from Egypt, the Almighty Father had seen the direction Israel wastaking. With the serpent seed still in full possession of their souls, He knew they were heading for a viciouscycle. Over and over they have backslidden, chastised, restored, and then reverted into their sinful ways again. They remained born in the flesh, governed by the serpent seed. Thus, the cycle of unfaithfulness has not beenbroken. It has only changed shape.

Jeremiah 32:30 quotes the Fathers scathing charge against the chosen people, For the children ofIsrael and the children of Judah have only done evil before me from their youth: for the children of Israel have only provoked me to

anger with the work of their hands, saith the LORD.

And yet, in the midst of it all, there is a promise that the Father somehow going to deal with theseflesh and blood people on a much higher level; not through the priests and prophets anymore but throughHis very own, His Begotten Son, the promised Messiah.

Isaiah 59:20And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the LORD

There is a description of the nature of this Redeemer that is to come to the earth:

    Isaiah 9:6

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be calledWonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

    THE ONE TRUE GOD

The belief and recognition of the One True God takes precedence over our understanding of thenature of the Begotten Son. Nowhere in the scripture can we read that there are three Gods or other godsbesides Him. The Word of God explicitly asserts that there is only One God.

Deuteronomy 6:4Hear, O Israel: the LORD our God is one LORD

There is one God. There is only one God. This truth is central to our faith, for both the Old Testamentand theNew Testamentteach it clearly and emphatically. Nevertheless, despite of the simplicity of this messageand the clarity with which the Bible presents it, many who believe in the existence of God have notunderstood it.

The Old Testament Teaches That There Is But One God

Isaiah 43:10-11Before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me. I, even I, am the LORD; and beside me there is no savior.

    Isaiah 44:6

I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God

Isaiah 44:8Is there a God beside me?yea, there is no God; I know not any

Isaiah 44:24I am the LORDthat maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself.

Isaiah 45:6There is none besideme. I am the LORD and there is none else.

    Isaiah 45:21-22

There is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me. Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the endsof the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.

Isaiah 46:9Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me.

In short, the Old Testamentspeaks of God in terms of being one. Many times the Bible calls God theHoly One (Psalm 71:22; 78:41; Isaiah 1:4; 5:9; 5:24), but never the holy two, holy three, or the holymany.

Surely, God could not make it plainer that no plurality whatsoever exists in the Godhead. In shortthe Old Testamentaffirms that God is absolutely one in number.

The New Testament Teaches That There is But One God

The Begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, gave emphasis on Deuteronomy 6:4, calling it the first ofall the commandments.

Mark 12:29-3029And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:

30And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thystrength: this is the first commandment.

TheNew Testamentconfirms the Old Testamentteaching of one God and plainly reiterates this messagemany times.

Romans 3:30Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.

1 Corinthians 8:4And concerning therefore the eating of those things that areoffered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in theworld, and that there is none other God but one.

1 Corinthians 8:6But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are allthings, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all

    things, and we by him.

Galatians 3:20Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one.

Ephesians 4:6One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

1 Timothy 2:5For there is one God, and onemediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.

    James 2:9

Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest will: the devils also believe, and tremble.

Again theNew Testamentreferred to Almighty Father as the Holy One

1 John 2:20But ye havean unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.

There is one throne in heaven and One sits upon it.

Revelation 4:2And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne.

The above Scriptural references are sufficient to establish that theNew Testamentalso teaches thesingleness of our Almighty Father.

    THE NATURE OF GOD

To continue our study of the singleness of Divine Being, it is essential that we learn more aboutsome of His divine characteristics that are related to this learning. Of course, our small human minds cannot

fully grasped all there is to know about Him, but the Scripture depict some basic attributes that Godpossesses that would help us understand the essence of God.

    God is a Spirit

The Lord Jesus Christ proclaimed this truth inJohn 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him mustworship him in spirit and in truth.

The Bible reveals it consistently, from Galatians 1:2, And the earth was without form, and void;anddarkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

to Revelations 2:17And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that athirst come. And whosoeverwill, let him take the water of life free.

Hebrew 12:9 calls God the Father of spirits:Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be insubjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?

What is a spirit? Websters Dictionaryincludes in its definition of the word the following: Asupernatural, incorporeal, rational being usually invisible to human beings but having the power to becomevisible at will. This definition emphasizes that a spirit does not have flesh and bones like we do.

Luke 24:39Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.

Similarly, Jesus implied that the Spirit of God does not have flesh and blood.

Matthew 16:17And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, butmy Father which is in heaven.

So, when the Bible says that God is a Spirit, it means that He cannot be seen or touch physically byhuman beings, but He has the power to manifest Himself if He so wills.

    God is Invisible

Since God is a Spirit, He is invisible unless He chooses to manifest Himself in some form visible toman. God told Moses, Thou canstnotsee my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.(Exodus 33:20).

No man hath seen God at any time:

John 1:18No man hath seen God at any time, the onlybegotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

1 John 4:12No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, andhis love is perfected in us.

Not only has no man ever seen God, but no man can see God.

1 Timothy 6:16Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: towhom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.

Although man can see God when He appears in various forms, no man can see directly the invisibleSpirit of God.

    God is Omnipresent

The Almighty Father can be everywhere at the same time. He is the only Spirit that is trulyomnipresent; for all other spirit beings such as devils, angels, and satan himself can be confined to specificlocations.

John 1:6And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains underdarkness unto the judgmentof the great day.

Revelation 20:1-31And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.

2And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the devil, and satan, and bound him a thousand years,

3And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.

Solomon recognized Gods omnipresence when he prayed at the dedication of the Temple, saying,

1 Kings 8:27But will God indeed dwell on the earth?behold, the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this housethat I builded?

2 Chronicles 2:6But who is able to buildhim an house, seeing the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain him? Who am I then, that Ishould build him an house, save only to burn sacrifice before him.

God Himself declared His omnipresence by saying:

Isaiah 66:1Thus saith the LORD, the heaven is mythrone, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? Andwhere is the place of my rest?

    Perhaps, the most beautiful description of Gods omnipresence is found in;

Psalm 139:7-137Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or shall I flee from thy presence?

8If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.

    9If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;

10Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.

11If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me.

12Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.

13For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mothers womb.

When the Almighty Father came to earth or appeared to a man, it does not negate His omnipresence. It simply means the focus of His activity has shifted to earth at least as far as a certain individual or a certain

situation is concerned. When God comes to earth, heaven is not empty. He is still just as much in heaven asever. He can act simultaneously in heaven and on earth, or at several locations on earth. It is very importantthat we recognize the magnitude of Gods omnipresence and not limit it by our human experience.

    THE ESSENCE OF GOD

The essence of God according toJohn 4:24 is that God is a Spirit. Being a Spirit, He can be presenteverywhere as one of His titles, the OMNIPRESENT ONE, conveys. The Spirit cannot be seen but itspresence is felt. However, this Spirit, according toJohn 1:1,has a Word with Him; and this Word is God.

    In The Beginning

John 1:1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

All through the Old Testamentaccount, we can see how God revealed Himself using His Spirit andWord. In Mt. Sinai, He spoke to His people but He was not seen at all. His Spirit and His Word go togetherand They are one as much as man and his voice are not two distinct entities but are one and the same.

This is the essence of God in the Old TestamentSpirit and Word. The Word can only be heard butnot seen just like the Spirit.

As we continue, let us proceed to the manifestation of the Word.

And The Word Was Made Flesh

John 1:1-14In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God...and the Word was made flesh, anddwelt among us.

Now we came to theNew Testament. According to Matthew 1:18, Now the birth of Jesus Christ was onthis wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the HolyGhost.

The child in the womb of Mary was conceived of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the Father ofJesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the Word of God in the Old Testament, now called the Son of God in theNewTestament. In the same vein, the Son of God in theNew Testament. In the same vein, the Spirit in the OldTestamentbecame the Father in theNew Testament;but They are not separate; They are one.

Now, we can see the Spirit and the Word.

1 John 1:1-2 evidently says, That which was from the beginning, whichwe have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it,and bear witness, and show unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)

The verse talks about the Word of Life which is the Word of God. In the Old Testament, the Word isonly heard but not seen; but in theNew Testament(Matthew 1:18-21), the Word took on the form of a humanflesh according toJohn 1:14. Thus, He is now called as the Begotten Son of GodJESUS CHRIST.

God is a Spirit without flesh and blood and invisible to man. In order to make Himself visible toman and in order to shed innocent blood for our sins, He had to put on flesh. Jesus is not another God or apart of God, but He is the God of the Old Testamentrobed in flesh. He is the Almighty Father Who came inflesh to bridge the gap between man and God that mans sin had created. He put on flesh, as a man put on acoat.

    THE MYSTERY OF GODLINESS

1 Timothy 3:16And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels,

preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

The fact that God became flesh is one of the most wonderful and yet one of the incomprehensiblethings of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh...(1 Timothy 3:16). Our Lord Jesus Christ is like no otherman that ever has been or will be. He has two natures; He is fully God and fully man. Most problems inpeoples minds concerning the Godhead stem from this great mystery. They cannot understand the dualnature of Christ and cannot correctly separate His two roles. They cannot comprehend how God could takeon the form of a baby and live among men.

The mystery of God in flesh was also a great stumbling block to Jews. They never could understandhow Jesus, being a man, could also be God.

John 10:33The Jews answered him, saying, For A good work we stone theenot; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.

    JESUS CHRISTBoth God and Man

From the Bible we see that Jesus Christ had two distinct natures in a way that no other human beinghas ever had. One nature is human or fleshly; the other nature is divine or Spirit. Jesus was both fully manand fully God. The name Jesus refers to the eternal Spirit of God (the Father) dwelling in the flesh. We canuse the name Jesus to describe either one of His two natures or both. For example, when we say Jesus diedon the cross, we mean His flesh died on the cross. When we say Jesus lives in our hearts, we mean His Spiritis there.

Below is a comparative list that will illustrate what we mean when we say Jesus had two natures or a dualnature.

We can resolve most questions about the Godhead if we properly understand the dual nature ofJesus. When we read a statement about Jesus, we must determine if it describes Jesus as a man or as God.Moreover, whenever Jesus speaks in the Scripture, we must determine whether He is speaking as man or asGod. Sometimes it is easy to get confused when the Bible describes Jesus in these two different roles, especially when it describes Him acting in both roles in the same story. For example, He could sleep oneminute and calm down the storm the next minute. He could speak as man one moment and then as God thenext moment.

SON OF GOD, NOT GOD THE SON

We should consider the dual nature of Christ into the framework of biblical terminology. The termFather refers to God HimselfGod in all His deity, the Creator of us all. God the Father, can be read in theScriptures:

    Titus 1:4

To Titus, my own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord our Jesus Christour Saviour.

However, the Bible does not use the term God the Son, not even once time. It is not a correctterm because the Son of God refers to the humanity of Jesus Christ.

The Son of God is not a separate person in the Godhead, but the physical expression of the oneGod. The Son is the image of the invisible God.

Colossians 1:15Who is the image of the invisible God,the firstborn of every creature: and the express image of His [Gods] person.

Hebrews 1:3Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding allthings by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high.

Just as a signature stamp leaves an exact likeness on paper, or just as a seal leaves an exact impressionwhen pressed in wax. So the Son of God is the exact expression of the Spirit of God in flesh. Man could notsee the invisible God; so God made an exact likeness of Himself in flesh, impressed His very nature in flesh, came Himself in flesh, so that man could see and know Him.

Other Son of God Before The Begotten Son

We should note that the angels are called sons of God.

Job 38:7When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

Adam was also the son of God by creation. (Genesis 1:26-27; 2:7)

Luke 3:38Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God.

However, Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of God. He is the only One ever conceived orbegotten by the Spirit of God.

John 3:16For God so loved the world, that he give his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but haveeverlasting life.

The Sonship of Jesus Christ is not Eternal

John 3:16 calls Jesus the only Begotten Son of God. However, manypeople use to phrase eternalSon. However, the Bible never uses it and it expresses a concept contradicted by Scripture. The word begottenis a form of the verb beget, which means to procreate, to father, to sire. Thus, begotten indicates a definitepoint in timethe point at which conception takes place. By definition, the begetter (father) always mustcome before the begotten (offspring). There must be a time when the begetter exists and the begotten is notyet in existence, and there must be a point in time when the act of begetting occurs.

Clearly, the humanity of Jesus is not eternal but was born in Bethlehem. One can speak of eternalitypast, present, and futureonly with respect to God. Since Son of God refers to humanity or deity asmanifest in humanity, the idea of an eternal Son is incomprehensible. The Son of God had a beginning.

The Beginning and Ending of the Begotten Son

The Sonshipor the role of the Sonbegan with the child conceived in the womb of Mary. TheScripture make this perfectly clear. Galatians 4:4 says, But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth hisSon, made of a woman, made under the law.

The Son came in the fullness of timenot in eternity past. The Son was made of a womannotbegotten eternally. The Son was made under the lawnot before the law. The Son of God was begotten

when the Spirit of God miraculously caused conception to take place in the womb of Mary. From all of theseit is easy to see that the Son is not eternal, but was begotten by God almost 2000 years ago.

Not only did a Sonship have a beginning, but it will, in at least one sense, have an ending. This isevident from 1 Corinthians 15:23-28.

1 Corinthians 15:23-2823But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christs at his coming.

24Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom of God, even the Father; when he shall have put down allrule and all authority and power.

25For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.

26The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.

27For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him.

28And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things underhim, that God may be all in all.

But it is easily explained if we realize that Son of God refers to a specific role that God temporarilyassumed for the purpose of redemption. When the reasons for the Sonship cease to exist, God (Jesus) willcease acting in His role as Son, and will return to His original role as Father, Creator, and Ruler of all. TheSonship will be given to an heir coming from the fallen Adamic race, that will overcome and triumphed over the serpent seed(spirit of disobedience to the Will of the Father), and will be deposited with the Spirit of obedience coming from the AlmightyFather.

THE FATHER AND SON ARE ONE

John 10:30I and my Father are one.

    John 10:38

But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works:that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him.

The Godhead is not like a Human Family

Even the apostle Philip was confused everytime he hears Jesus Christ referring to somebody else asthe Father:

John 14:8-108Philip saith unto him, Lord show us the Father, and it sufficeth us.

9Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hathseen the Father; and how sayest thou, Show us the Father?

10Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: butthe Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.

In a human family, a son is a different person from the father. A human son when asked where is hisfather, could not just reply, He that hath seen me hath seen the Father. It is much different in the case of theGodhead.

    FATHER, SON AND HOLY GHOST

Only one verse in the entire Bible mention Father, Son, and Holy Ghost in a way that could suggestthree persons in the Godhead.

Matthew 1:18 tells us that Mary conceived and give birth to Jesus Christ. Scripture also tells us thatthe conception was of the Holy Ghost. When the child was born, the Word became the Son who called outFather. Who is this Father that the Son calls out to? He is the One who conceived Him none otherthan the Holy Ghost.

The Spirit is not distinct from the Word. The Word only manifested itself in the flesh that is why theWord can now speak. But if you ask, where is the One who sent the Word? The Word will answer, He is withme and He is living inside of me.

Matthew 28:19Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.

In this passage, Jesus commanded His disciples to baptize In the name of the Father, and of theSon, and of the Holy Ghost. However, this verse of Scripture does not teach the Father, Son, and the HolyGhost are three separate Persons. Rather, it teaches the title of Father, Son, and Holy Ghost identify onename and therefore one Being. The verse expressly says, in the name (singular), not in the names (plural).

In the Name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost

Old Testamentpromised that there would come a time when Jehovah would have one name and that

this one name would be made known:

Isaiah 52:6Therefore My people shall know My Name: therefore they shall know in thatday that I am He that doth speak: behold, it is I.

Jesus is the Name of the Father.

John 5:43I come in my Fathers name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.

Jesus is the Name of the Son.

    Matthew 1:21

And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

Jesus is the Name of the Holy Ghost.

John 14:26But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom The Father will send in My name, he shallteach you all things, and bringall things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

The Name of the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost is JESUS CHRIST. The Apostles clearly understood thisto be so, for they baptized in the name of Jesus Christ:

Acts 2:38Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and

ye shall receive the give of the Holy Ghost.

Acts 8:16For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Acts 19:5When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Obviously, Matthew 28:19 does not teach three persons in one God; but rather it gives three titles ofGod. All of which properly apply to Jesus Christ. The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are all titles whichcorrespond to a particular office and role of Jesus Christ. He is the Father in creation, the Son in redemptionand the Holy Spirit in regeneration.
