It was my 11th birthday whenmy father bought something as hispresent for me. It was wrappedneatly with a beautiful paper. My

father asked me not to open theparcel while my party was held. Itwas a book and it was covered withbrown paper. When I opened it Icould see the title of the book was'Ranarala.'During the night I readit but could not read the wholebook. After my breakfast I read thebook again and I finished it beforelunch. I have a book to write thenames of books I have read, and theauthors' names.

The author of 'Ranarala' isGamini Samarakoon. It was abouta great man called Ranarala. He

was an old sailor. One day the ship

he sailed broke, and the men whoworked in the ship went awayusing the lifeboats. Ranaralaremained on the ship to help theWickramasinghe family. The next

day, the ship floated to an island. The story tells of the difficultiesthey faced on the island. However,Ranarala died in the end trying tosave the Wickramasinghe family. The next day a boat came to savethem but only the Wickramasinghefamily left the island. I think thatthis is my favourite book becausethe author has written it as if itwas a real story.

    The SilentNight Hunter

    On silent night wings,

Over silent night things,A barn owl glides,Soaring high, soaring low,Precious time it abides.

A harvest mouse patters out ofher nest,Of all the nights to come outthis was not the best,For already decided tonight isher fate,

And by the time she notices, itis too late.

On this dark, silent night,With the heavens in sight,On silent night wings,Over silent night things,

A barn owl has hunted,For her nestlings' sake,Leaving nothing in her wake,But the wind.
